While there isno general agreement upon the greatest film, many publications and organizations have tried to determine thefilms considered thebest. The films mentioned in this articlehave all been mentioned in a notable survey be it a popular pollor critics' poll. Many of these sources focus on American films orwere polls of English-speaking film goers, but those considered

the greatest within their respective countries are also includedhere.

None of these citations should be viewed as scientific measuresof the film-watching world. They are often influenced by votestacking or they survey a population with skewed demographics.Internet-based surveys have a self-selecting audience ofunknown participants. The methodology of some surveys may bequestionable. Sometimes (as in the case of theAmerican FilmInstitute) voters were asked to select films from a limited list ofentries.

Polls of critics and filmmakersEvery decade, the British film monthly Sight & Soundasks aninternational group of film professionals to vote for their greatestfilm of all time. The Sight & Soundaccolade has come to beregarded as one of the most important ofthe "greatest ever film"lists. Roger Ebert described it as "by far the most respected ofthe countless polls of great moviesthe only one most seriousmovie people take seriously."[1]

Citizen Kane(1941) by Orson Welles was voted #1 in the

five Sight & Soundcritics' polls from 1962 to 2002.[2]A

separate Sight & Soundpoll of established film directors, held for the first time in 1992, also placed Citizen Kaneat

the top in 1992 and 2002.[2]Citizen Kanewas also

selected as #1 in a Village Voiceand in a Time Out

critics' poll. It was listed as the greatest American film by

theAmerican Film Institute in both the first (1998) and

second (2007) versions of its 100 Years... 100Movieslist.

It also topped the list of the 100 all-time greatest movies,

as listed in 2013 by Entertainment Weekly.[3]

Bicycle Thieves(1948) by Vittorio De Sica topped the firstSight & Soundcritics' poll, in 1952. It also came #7 in

    1962 and #6 in 2002.[2]It also came #10 in the 2012

    directors' poll.[4]

Tokyo Story(1953) by Yasujir Ozu topped the Sight &

Sounddirectors' poll in 2012, dethroning Citizen Kane.[4]

Tokyo Storyalso appeared in the Sight & Soundcritics'

poll at third place in 1992, fifth in 2002, and third in

    2012.[5]Tokyo Storyalso topped a 1998 critics' poll

conducted by Asian film magazine Cinemaya, where itwas followed by Satyajit Ray's Pather Panchali(1955)
