What is the Occupational Outlook Handbook? The Occupational Outlook Handbook is a database that is in print

and electronic form that is run through the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics that shows the descriptions and future outlook for various jobs and careers.

The electronic resources is extremely easy to navigate since the user would have options of looking up a certain occupation through the:

1. General Search Engine 2. Occupational Groups 3. Occupation Finder 4. Subject 5. Median Pay 6. Entry Level Education 7. Number of New Jobs 8. Growth Rate

How can you find the Occupational Outlook Handbook? The Occupational Outlook Handbook is

published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and updated on an annual basis.

Print versions can be found in public and academic libraries.

The electronic version can be found at: https:// www.bls.gov/ooh/

Questions that can be answered by the Occupational Outlook Handbook: What specifically does my chosen career

do? How much is the median pay of my

career? What type of environment would I be

working in? What type of education should I get to

achieve my goal? What is the job outlook of this career?

How the resource can be used: The resource primarily can be used to find

statistics of a certain workforce if a specific group such as a government agency, career management centers or employment agencies may need information for research or employment purposes.

Adults could use this database as a reference point to navigate through various career options.

How to conduct a general search through the Occupational Outlook Handbook Database You are looking up the occupation of

being a Special Education Teacher. Step One: You would have to type in “Special Education Teacher” into the general search engine of the database. (Screen shot is on the following slide.)

Navigating through results: The next step, is navigating through

your results. The search engine will give you a plethora of results that you can look at. Specifically, we are looking for a description of what Special Education Teachers do so we will click on the link that says Special Education Teacher.

Examining your results: Once you have clicked on your results, you will be

taken to another page that gives a detailed description of what a Special Education Teacher does. The results also include information on median pay, typical entry level education, on the job training, the number of jobs, job outlook and employment change.

The results also give the user information on what special education teachers do, their work environment, how to become a teacher and similar occupations.

Conducting a career search through the Occupation Groups search box: The Occupation Group search is another

method of looking up information on a career through the Occupational Outlook Handbook.

The Occupation Groups are on the left hand side of the web page. They are grouped into labels such as Architecture and Engineering, Arts and Design, Education, Training and Library, Legal and Military.

The Occupation Group gives you a variety of choices to look up many different kinds of jobs and career.

After you have chosen the career you want to research, you can click on the group that corresponds with the occupation that is being researched.

An alternative look at a career When a user chose a career from the

Occupation Groups, the database gives a list of various, occupations that would fit under the primary label. I chose Management. Selecting this occupation group gives a user the title of a job, a brief summary of what the job is and the pay for that career.

The Occupational Outlook Handbook is an extremely useful Ready Reference Resource that patrons can easily use. The database can be used to find a plethora of statistics on jobs and career of any kind. The database can be used for pleasure or research purposes.
