The key to keeping water and dampness outWater proofing of buildings started as early as 5000 BC, when the Egyptians used bitumen coated lead for damp proof membranes. Today there are different technologies available for liquid applied membranes (LAM) and damp proof membranes (DPM). Most of the LAMs are used under tiles to protect water sensitive substrates from moisture and damp in wet rooms (e.g. bathrooms) or in roofing applications.applications.

Synthomer is a specialist supplier of water based binders and has introduced a range of XSBR, HS-SBR and Acrylic dispersions for water proofing systems such as flexible concrete, bitumen, LAM/DPM, etc. These polymers set the market standard for 1K-membranes and comply with all market requirements and standards like: ETAG 022, DIN EN 14891, BS, ABAA, AN/NSZ 4858:2004, ABP, ANSI 118.10 and ANSI 118.12ANSI 118.12

Polymer dispersion based liquid applied membranes/damp proof membranes offer an easy way of water proofing and vapour proofing.

Properties of liquid applied membranesThese systems can be characterized as follows:

• single pack system• waterbased compounds that can be applied even on damp substrates• non-toxic, non hazardous, solvent and plasticiser free•• well balanced mechanical properties: tough but with high flexibility, high percentage elongation and good crack bridging properties• low water vapour permeability• non staining and stain blocking• environmentally friendly (free of solvents)• low odour• p• protects moisture-sensitive substrates• good adhesion to all mineral construction materials, substrates containing plaster as well as heated floors and chip boards

The use of Synthomer dispersions improves membrane properties like:

• excellent water proofing• quick d• quick drying (typically touch dry in 1 hour)• seamless sealing• good performance as primer for adhesives• crack bridging• low VOC• alkali resistant, can be applied to alkaline surfaces• resistant to silage acids

In bathrooms and beyondApplication areas1k-membranes are applied during construction in several areas of buildings, some of which are listed as follows.

Floors: Under or above screeds to provide a damp proof membrane.Basements:Basements: As part of a waterproofing system beneath ground level.Walls: Under renders or plasters as water barrier or vapour barrier.Roofs: As the main waterproofing coating or as part of a repair system. (Protection from UV is recommended.)Tiling:Tiling: As secondary protection under tiles in wet areas e.g. bathrooms, food processing areas, balconies, etc.Water storage: Tests show that the membranes perform well even when continuously immersed in water.Silage storage: The membrane protects concrete from silage attack.

Formulation of 1k-membranes and applicationLiquidLiquid applied membranes are based on an advanced styrene butadiene latex or styrene acrylic dispersion that is formulated with fillers, pigments, fibers and film control agents. It is water based and typically no solvents and plasticisers are needed.

Preparation of the substrateTheThe substrate should be smooth or have a light even texture. Any masonry (e. g. bricks) should be flush pointed and defects in existing surfaces have to be repaired prior to application of the membrane.

The surface needs to be clean, sound and free of dust, loose material, or free surface water. The membrane should not be applied in wet conditions or where these conditions are likely to occur before the membrane has dried. The membrane should not be applied when the temperature of the substrate, or the air temperature, is below 7ºC.

OnOn the other hand it is advantageous to pre-wet dry concrete or masonry surfaces so that these are damp but free from any water glistening on the surface. Because of the wide variety of substrates and site conditions it is always advisable to check adhesion to the substrate by testing on a sample area before starting any job.

ApplicationTheThe membrane may be applied by brush, roller or airless spray. If necessary the compound can be diluted with up to 10% water. However, care should be taken to ensure that the correct dry coat thickness is applied.

Meet the Synthomer binders for your 1k-membraneThe thickness of the dried membrane per coat depends on the method of application. For a single dry coat thickness of more than 0.3 mm it is recommended that the membrane be applied by airless spray. If airless spray is used, single dry coat thicknesses of up to 1mm can be obtained. (Note: A single coat of 0.6 mm dry thickness or more will require a greater drying time than for an equivalent multicoat application.)application.)

If two coats are being applied it is recommended that the coats is applied at right angles to each other.

Before applying the second coat it is necessary to let the first coat become touch dry. The time required to reach this touch dry condition will vary according to site conditions but will typically be in the order of 1 hour. It is preferable if the second coat is applied within 24 hours of applying the first coat. After all coats have been applied, the membrane should be left for at least 4 days before attempting any pondingponding tests. Under unfavourable drying conditions this period may need to be extended.

In some situations e.g. at high stress points such as wall/floor junctions it is beneficial to use fabric (scrim) reinforcement. Such reinforcement is available in many types and local availability will often influence choice. Fabric made from polypropylene or polyester is suggested. Fabric made from natural fibres should be avoided.

SSynthomer polymers for liquid applied membranesTheThe right polymer is key to develop qualified waterproofing materials. Therefore the Synthomer range contains different binders, which have been designed to offer specific advantages for producers of 1k-membranes, including high tensile strength, good water and alkali resistance, as well as excellent crack bridging performance and elongation properties.
