LIONS CLUB OF KIAMA FROM PRESIDENT JIM KI-LINES APRIL 2020: ‘STAY AT HOME’ EDITION Further on in Ki-Lines, David Robson and Gerry McInerney have put together a wonderful article on our big night with plenty of wonderful photos of our evenings activities. Well done to you both! I have spoken recently to our Welfare Officer, Gerry McInerney, and he tells me that we have not had any requests for assistance from any of our mem- bers, which hopefully means we are all doing the right thing and looking after ourselves, our neighbours and our families. If you do need any as- sistance please contact us so we can help. Speaking of Gerry, he tells me he has a number of our 50th Anniversary books for sale, so if you have- n't already bought a copy, please contact Gerry and he will make sure a copy gets delivered to you. Again, on behalf of our club, we thank Lions Russell & Gerry for the many hundreds of hours that went into creating our wonderful 50th Year Book, it is truly an outstanding history of our club. As I mentioned to you in our last email, the Club has cancelled any non-urgent activities so that our members can self-isolate. We are however keeping up the maintenance of the Lions Gardens and the cleaning of the TOMRA area at Kiama View. I have made Kerry McMurray, Kiama Council GM, aware that while our club has effectively gone into hibernation, he should let us know if we are able to assist our local community in any way we possibly can. Your Board is continuing to look after Club busi- ness. We are currently looking at different methods of holding Board meetings via online meeting sites such as Zoom. (Continued on page 2) Hello Lions, welcome to this months Ki-Lines It is incredible a few weeks makes. It wasn’t that long ago that Michelle and I were looking forward to our over- seas trip starting in July. The Coronavirus didn’t look that bad, or so we thought. Like many Lions I have spoken to lately, we had to cancel our trip. That now appears to be the least of our worries as many Australians have now contracted the virus and quite a number have unfor- tunately died. Luckily we are a lot better off than many overseas countries and the curve appears to be flatten- ing out here, thank good- ness. Self-isolation appears to be working. In view of where we are now with regards to self-isolation rules, we were very lucky to get our 50th Anniversary celebration night in. Every- one I have spoken to have said they had a great night with many members catch- ing up with past members.

Hello Lions, welcome to this months Ki-Lines

It is incredible a few weeks makes. It wasn’t that long ago that Michelle and I were looking forward to our over-seas trip starting in July. The Coronavirus didn’t look that bad, or so we thought. Like many Lions I have spoken to lately, we had to cancel our trip. That now appears to be the least of our worries as many Australians have now contracted the virus and quite a number have unfor-tunately died. Luckily we are a lot better off than many overseas countries and the curve appears to be flatten-ing out here, thank good-ness. Self-isolation appears to be working.

In view of where we are now with regards to self-isolation rules, we were very lucky to get our 50th Anniversary celebration night in. Every-one I have spoken to have said they had a great night with many members catch-ing up with past members.

A first in our club to start the next 50 years! A big thank you to David Robson who organised our election to be done by online and postal voting. Another first I think for our Club!

I will make sure I let you know of any important news or Board decisions that might come up. In the meantime stay well and stay in touch.

Let David Robson know if you are doing any new self-isolation projects around the house so we can start a segment in Ki-Lines on our self-isolation home improvements, or other projects, such as writing a book.

50th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

Five original members of the Kiama Lions Club on 12th March 1970, when it began, were able to attend and help celebrate the club’s 50th Birth-day celebration at the Kiama Leagues Club. Current Lions Al McDonald & Jon Phipps joined former members Kevin Wha-lan, Tom Richardson and Noel Creighton Snr. (Photo to right) The function was a sell-out and many past members and Lions Ladies were in attendance, some travelling a great distance to be there.

The Mayor of Kiama, Mark Honey, began the official proceedings with a toast to Lions Clubs In-ternational with District Governor Gordon Matthews responding and mentioning the out-standing community work done by Kiama Lions over those fifty years.

Several awards were presented during the evening with Lions Al McDonald and Jon Phipps given 50 year membership medals to recognise their continuous membership since the club’s formation. Club member and Past District Governor Peter Scifleet received a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellowship for his dedicated humanitarian service.

One highlight of the evening was the launch of a book detailing the work of Kiama Lions over the fifty-year period. Co-authored by Russell Fredericks and Gerard McInerney OAM and titled “Kiama Lions Club A History :50 Years of Service, Fellowship and Fun”, the book was three years in the making. Copies are available at the Kiama Library for $25. Production of the book was partly subsidised by grants from the Royal Australian Historical Society (from NSW Government funding); Kiama Municipal Council; Fiona Phillips MP; Kiama Leagues Club; IMB Bank and John & Iris Hines.

An excellent buffet dinner was followed by the cutting of the commemorative cake by inaugural and continuing members, Past President Al McDonald and Lion Jon Phipps. (Photo to right)

Dancing followed to the music of Gerrin-gong Band, Missing Linc, led by Lincoln Piper and there was also much reminiscing among old friends reunited under the banner of “service”. It was a truly memorable evening.

Lion Noel Reid OAM was an original Charter member of the Lions Club of Queanbeyan, formed in 1957. Noel was also a Past District Governor (PDG)(1963-64) and a former Club President.

In 2006 Noel was admit-ted Into the Australian Lions Foundation Hall of Fame Honour Roll in recognition of his exceptional service to the Lions organisation and the community. Noel was also been honoured as a Lions Life Member and was awarded a Melvin Jones Fellowship for his outstanding service to Lions Clubs International.

In 2010 Noel was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for his outstanding service to the Queanbeyan community.

We celebrate Noel’s life and his proud legacy in helping to start the sale of Lions Christmas cakes. Noel worked with the late Lion Ern Smith to introduce the Lions Christmas Cake program to this district in 1965. The story goes that Ern suggested to his District Governor that Lions should sell Christmas Cakes and it be expanded to a National pro-gram. His District Governor told him he was crazy.

Nevertheless the idea was formulated, moved, seconded and adopted that Lion Ern Smith be given just one week to form a plan to bring his idea into being. Ern and Noel rolled up their sleeves and got on with it and the rest is history!

The first Lions Christmas Cakes sold 13,470 in its first year and is now synonymous with the Lions brand. Annual na-tional sales are around $6.5 million and with over $50 mil-lion been raised since sales began.

Noel playing a vital role during the 1960s and 1970s in Li-ons fund raising events to setup new services and ameni-ties for the Queanbeyan community, such as:

• An adult scooter race three years running to raise money for a filtration plant for the much needed Queanbeyan Swimming Pool

• Winter clothing for the needy

• An annual Christmas party for senior citizens

• Fund raising to start what be-came George Forbes House

• Fund raising for a shelter for homeless women

• Fundraising for an ambu-lance, and

• A kilometre of dollars for purchase of hospital equip-ment.

Noel featured prominently in the Club’s 60th anniversary event in 2017 and in the Club’s hosting of the Lions 201N2 Dis-trict Convention in October 2017. In November 2018 Noel joined with fellow Lions legend Peter Stapleton OAM and QPRC Mayor Tim Overall to cut the ribbon to officially open the Lions Community Bookshop.

We remember and give thanks for Noel’s great tradition of service in Lions and we extend our deep sympathy to his wife Joan and family at his passing. Vale PDG Noel Reid OAM. RIP

Lions International President's Award

Courtesy N2 Newsletter Aug-Sep 2010, Editor Lion David Robson

Lions Clubs across Australia rallied to support farmers with emergency stock and animal feed, and to raise funds to continue to support farmers and their families during this drought crisis.

Thank you to everyone who

has made donations to ‘Lions

Cakes for Farmers’ to help

support families across Aus-

tralia who are experiencing

hardship due to the current

drought. Lions distributed

our beautiful Christmas cakes

to families to ensure that they

received them in time for

Christmas.

While a simple cake may not seem like much, we hope this gesture of support to families provided at least one small bright moment in an other-wise difficult time.

KIAMA LIONS PAST & PRESENT

The Governor-General of Australia, His Excellency the Honourable General David Hurley AC DSC (Retd) and his wife Linda Hurley (above), are the new patrons of Lions Aus-tralia.

The couple eagerly ac-cepted the appointments, citing the tireless commu-nity work Lions do.

“Every day, Lions across Australia go above and be-yond to help people in need and make our com-munity a better place to live,” said the Governor-General. “From medical research, environmental work, emergency and dis-aster relief, helping the deaf and blind and sup-porting our youth, the work of Lions makes such a difference.”

WELCOME TO LIONS NEW PATRONS

“Linda and I look to working with this wonderful organisa-tion and its many volunteers across Australia.”

“Lions across Australia are men, women and young peo-ple on a mission to help others and give back to the commu-nity. “
