Linux is a computer operating system based on free and open source software.
There are many different varieties of Linux Linux is Unix-Like and based on the “Linux” Kernel Has the X Windows GUI Runs on multiple platforms Includes the Source Code
What is Linux?
Linux was created in 1991 by Linus Torvalds
Torvalds began to develop the Linux kernel on Minix
Later Linux matured and began to develop under itself
In 1992, Torvalds released his notes for version .12 and published version 0.99
Brief History and Background
1998: Many major companies such as IBM, Compaq and Oracle announce their support for Linux.
By 2005, the use of Linux became more prevalent in Supercomputing.
2011: Version 3.0 of the Linux kernel is released.
