IASP: the leading association of science parks and areas of innovation
Our mission is to be the global network for science and technology parks, and other areas of innovation, driving growth, internationalisation and effectiveness for our members
The expressions “technology park”, “technopole”, “research park” and “science park” encompass a broad
concept and are interchangeable within this definition.
What we do:
• Coordinate a very active network of managers and professionals of science, technology and research parks and other areas of innovation
• Enhance new business opportunities for members and their companies
• Assist the development of new parks and areas of innovation
• Increase the international visibility of our members and sponsors
We are:
• A worldwide association
• An independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation
• Managed by experts in science and technology parks and areas of innovation
IASP definition of science and technology park (STP)
A science park is an organisation managed by specialised professionals, whose main aim is to increase the wealth of its community by promoting the culture of innovation and the competitiveness of its associated businesses and knowledge-based institutions.
To reach these goals a science park stimulates and manages the flow of knowledge and technology amongst universities, R&D institutions, companies and markets; facilitates the creation and growth of innovation-based companies through incubation and spin-off programmes; and provides other value-added services as well as high quality space and facilities.
Areas of innovation: the new horizon both for science parks and cities
As science parks evolve they go beyond their original boundaries and their services, programmes and activities expand into broader areas. Cities too take a proactive role in promoting growth via innovation. These two trends often coincide and give birth to new urban areas of innovation (AIs), made up of hybrid spaces where people live and work and where knowledge-based institutions and companies locate, intertwine with city districts and neighbourhoods and create locally-anchored networks with global reach.
Kazuya Matsuo - PresidentKyoto Research Park Kyoto, Japan
“International networking is becoming key to success for innovation, and IASP has been our window to open our network to the world. The annual world conference has been the place to find new networks and ideas in this exciting STP community, and through IASP we can learn about the most exciting and pioneering activities to support innovators in our region.”
Our members say
The importance of science parks and areas of innovation
Science parks and other areas of innovation play a key role in the economic development of their cities, regions and countries
By offering high quality space and facilities and value-added services, especially adapted to the needs of the knowledge economy, they:
• Stimulate and manage the flow of knowledge and technology between universities and companies.
• Facilitate communication between companies, business managers and entrepreneurs.
• Provide environments that enhance a culture of innovation, creativity and quality.
• Focus on companies and research institutions as well as on people: the entrepreneurs and “knowledge workers”.
• Facilitate the creation of new businesses via incubation and spin-off programmes, and accelerate the growth of small and mediums size companies.
• Enhance access to the global knowledge-based economy for their cities, and provide expert solutions to revitalise rundown city districts and neighbourhoods.
• Work in a global network that gathers many thousands of innovative companies and research institutions throughout the world, supporting the internationalisation of their resident companies.
“As longstanding IASP members, we have seen how new science parks learn and gain valuable knowledge in this network, while for experienced ones it provides constant stimuli to adapt and stay competitive internationally. A recent IASP seminar organised with the European Commission by CREALYS and other Science Parks of Wallonia brought together more than 80 park managers, and provided the perfect forum to share ideas and learn from each other.”
Stéphanie Bonmariage – Investors & FDI CoordinatorCREALYS Namur, Belgium
Juan Camilo Quintero – Executive ManagerRuta N Innovation District Medellin, Colombia
“Innovation and networks are inseparable for Medellin and Ruta N. We are very pleased to receive recognition for our Medellinnovation District through IASP membership: it has helped our city to form global partnerships with other Districts and with Science and Technology Parks. The future belongs to the regions and especially to those who have an innovation district gathering all the knowledge and sharing it with the city and its citizens to create well-being.”

The IASP website is both a networking platform and a source of knowledge and information.
Members receive privileged access to the members-only section, with many features that facilitate international networking, especially through the IASP database of STP/AI managers, and a series of tools that will increase their interaction with other members of our community.
IASP conferences: networking at its best
IASP conferences are major events, where the full potential of our dynamic association is put into play: people meet, exchange knowledge and information, establish alliances and develop new joint projects. Since 1984, IASP has held over 120 international events, including conferences, seminars and workshops all over the world.
Every year IASP members from different parts of the world host our World Conference and regional events, and we assist them every step of the way. The IASP manual ‘Organising Quality Conferences’ gathers our vast experience on how to organise such events.
We also help our members to select themes, find speakers and market their own events.
POINT: adding intelligence to open innovation
POINT is a technology brokerage service based on Open Innovation.
• Helps resident companies in IASP member organisations to reach their potential by introducing their technologies and solutions to key players worldwide.
• Provides a link between global corporations looking for technologies, and thousands of innovative companies in a wide variety of sectors and market places.
Together with all of these services as standard, we also provide other tailor-made services for members, including intensive training courses and consultancy services.

Dates for the diary
“IASP’s workshops and conferences proved fundamental to understand that success is all about excellence, thematic focus, cooperation between stakeholders and implementing the right mix of value-added services. International networking with North American, African and South American IASP members has helped us meet these expectations while contributing to develop a new vibrant regional biotechnology industry in northwest Mexico.”
Humberto Villarreal - General ManagerBioHelis Innovation and Technology Park La Paz, Mexico Our members say
“The most important thing for Technopark STROGINO as a member of IASP is international partnership, and the practical tools for development it provides. We have improved our skills in cooperation with other technology parks, and IASP helped us establish contacts in Finland, China and Uruguay. Membership has been useful for forming relations and partnerships with big multinational corporations, and is very beneficial for companies located in the technology park.”
Sergey Teplov - General DirectorTechnopark STROGINOMoscow, Russia
Membership benefits Networking
At IASP we know that a good network is a formidable multiplier of resources, and networking is at the heart of what we do. Our staff connect members and partners, ensuring that they have access to any person or organisation in our global network whenever they need it.
Knowledge
It is the high quality of our members that provides our most important asset: knowledge. This is knowledge about creating and managing science parks, incubators and areas of innovation; about technology transfer, innovation, entrepreneurship and economic development. We create and maintain the channels through which all that wealth circulates among our members and enables all of us to significantly shorten our learning curve.
International visibility
The international visibility of our members, partners and sponsors is significantly reinforced by the IASP online directory, our growing online presence, and by the large and increasing number of delegates attending our conferences and international events.
Opportunities for resident companies
IASP connects companies located at our member science parks and areas of innovation with potential clients for their technologies and innovations on a global basis.
Accreditation
The IASP logo is the best accreditation a science park or area of innovation can have. It means that all the quality and added-value that define a true science and technology park have been met.
Our members say
“The Strategigram is a great tool to get to know your park better: although every park has a different composition, it covers the mission of any Science Park. By discussing the questions and their meaning, you get to understand different perspectives of your work, and also how your colleagues perceive your mission.”
Lena Miranda – CEO Mjärdevi Science ParkLinköping, Sweden
