Linked Data for Lean Enterprise Data Management
1
In an environment of ubiquitously communicating
devices, systems and people businesses
have plenty of opportunities to
access and benefit from enormous
amounts of data.
2
What they lack is the effective meansof integrating, interconnecting and
ultimately making sense of these data.
A major challenge for enterprise knowledge management is the difficulty to consolidate data from disparate information sources.
3
Having built various systems to address challenges ad hoc, organizations often end up
with vendor-specific solutions that generate
useless, siloed heaps of data.
4
5
These data, scattered across departments, in unrelated data sets, are increasingly
hard to manage and nearly impossible to extract useful
information from.
6
Data are walled off,and so isorganizational knowledge.
7
One way to awaken the dormant potential of this locked knowledge is to combine all the heterogeneous data into a single coherentsource and use them for smarter, data-driven decision making.
8
Enter Linked Data.
9
Linked Data technologies allow business information,
expressed and recorded in heterogeneous data formats, to be translated into a common format and thus made ready for cost-effective management and seamless integration.
The integration is addressed by creating a metalayer of uniform
data representation through which the data sets from the
systems are joined and a single entry point to access, use and
reuse data of different formats, schemas, storages is created.
10
11
Without the need to replace existing systems, business data (from both internal and external data sources) is consolidated.
12
Sounds too complex and techy?
Imagine a jigsaw puzzle you have been tasked
to assemble.
13
The tricky thing about this puzzle is that it contains tiles from various vendors. The picture to be completed is the same, yet puzzle pieces hardly interlock as their formats are different, each with specific size and structure, fitting only their corresponding tiles.
Assembling the whole picture without gaps and distortion seems impossible, doesn’t it? But what if the picture is completed on an abstract level? The way this can be done is by representing each piece with a virtual standard format piece which further gets a virtual match.
14
15
Similarly (technicalities aside) Linked Data approach is about representing various chunks of information in a standard data format.

Once standardized, enterprise data is then turned into smart data pieces which fit together in any combination and connect with numerous other data pieces seamlessly.

Something more, a common framework to facilitate the sharing and reuse of enterprise data
internally (across business units) and externally
(with 3rd parties)is built.

This framework of interconnected data
pieces allows for a 360-degree view of the
entire business and a holistic approach
to recognizing opportunities or spotting bottlenecks
in the organization’s processes.

This is how Linked Data presents enterprises with multiple perspectives on what they “know” and that is why mapping organizational information through a standard data format is so exciting and holds so much potential.

For in a data-driven environment, lean information management and robust business intelligence can be done wisely by integrating, interpreting and ultimately making sense of data.
