Britain's high consumption of fast food has been attributed to thefact that people are often too busy to eat a proper balanced diet.Nutritionists saythe figures are worrying and warn that while occasionallyeating fast food is not harmful, a high fat diet can increase the Iikelihood-of heart disease.

The SurveyThis report is based on the findings of a surveywhich was carried out at six well-known fastfood chains. 1,000 people aged 13-65 wereasked a number of questions concerning theireating habits, and the restaurant managerswere asked about healthy eating choicesavailable at their restaurants.

Facts and FiguresOn average, people buy food around twice aweek from fast food outlets. However, teenagerseat out more often. The majority of teenagerseat at fast food outlets approximately threetimes each week. The survey also showedthat teenagers made up almost two thirds ofthe customers oI pizzaand burger restaurants,over half of the customers of chickenrestaurants, and around 4 in every 10 of thecustomers of fish and chip shops. None of theteenagers interviewed said that they didn'tlike a particular kind of fast food.A small number of customers at the fast foodoutlets visited were over the age of fifty -approximately 5 per cent. The majority of theseinterviewees claimed to be eating at therestaurant in question because they were withyounger people, mainly grandchildren.Unfoftunately, neither the teenagers nor theolder people seemed to be aware of thedangers of eating fast food on a regular basis.

Healthy eating choicesThe managers were more than willing to supplyhealthy options from their menus. They allagreed that it is important to offer people somehelp in identifying them. The main advantage of

One of the quesfions I am often asked by friends who are thinking of getting a dog concernstraining. This would seem to be quite an easy question to answer, but it is far more

complicated than it appears. lt all depends on the breed of dog,lfs she and its character.

Of these three factors, the way in whicha dog behaves is the most significant. Anarticle written about a large breed of dog,the Great Dane, suggests the followingtest when choosing a puppy.tf,-] lf, onthe other hand, it continues to struggle, itwill be harder to control.

Because of its great size this breed isparticularly difficult to train if training hasnot begun properly when they are small.It is also very important for the ownerof such a dog (or any other breed forthat matter) to be seltconfident duringtraining periods. Without this qualityin the owner, the dog is unlikely torespond correctly. This is because dogsalways look to a leader for attention andprotection. @[]At the other end of the size scale, thereis a small breed which may be difficult tocontrol: the Jack Russell. A schoolfriendof mine had one that used to objectviolently when I tried to leave his houseafter a visit. lt would try to bite everyonein sight until I managed to get throughthe front door. Then it would run tothe window, jump on the couch andbark furiously as I walked towards thegarden gate.

$[ l when a dog is attowed tobehave in this way without appropriateresponse, it actually learns that thiskind of behaviour is acceptable.

So, it is a good idea to teach the puppy thatif it can't play properly, it can't play at all. lfa puppy bites, experts do not recommendhitting it or holding its mouth closed. lnsteadthey suggest that the dog's lips should be -

gently pushed towards its teeth. Then, ifthe dog tries to bite, it only bites itself.This action will correct its behaviour andremind it that you are the boss.

This is particularly effective with JackRussels. m For example, Dalmatiansreact very wellto motivation training. Thisinvolves rewarding a dog for doing theright thing at the right time. ln order toget the dog to sit, for example, motivationin the form of a toy or a biscuit can beused to make him do it. This type oftraining comes from the experiments ofB F Skinner, an American psychologist,and it is a simple idea: dog doessomething, so dog gets food.

$f-] Apparently, these dogs like toplease themselves rather than their owners.ln other words, their idea of motivationtraining goes as follows: owner likes whatdog does, so owner gives dog food. Thetrick, therefore, in training this idiosyncraticanimal successfully is to convince it thatdoing what it is told is its own idea andnot its trainer's. Once this dog believesthat its owner is being tricked into giving itrewards, it will learn quickly and etfectively,especially if the rewards are in the form ofa treat.

Apart from food and toys being used indog training, there are also special collarswhich are worn by a dog and can be used tocontrol its behaviour. GD Experiencedtrainers disagree with me on this pointso I decided to do a simple experiment,which proved I was right. I wrapped oneof these collars around my arm and gotsomeone to pull gently on it. lt hud. ThenI asked the same person to pull hard. lthurt a lot.

I really feel that the best advice I cangive about dog faining is that you shouldalways be kind to your dog and never scoldit unnecessarily during training as it mightnot have understood exactly what youwanted it to do.
