Has the church a future? If you visit the average rural

church, and see a handful of elderly people making up the congregation, you would be forgiven to answering that provocative question with a confident “No!”

In probably not much more than a decade, most of these old folk (including the writer!) will be in the churchyard, rather than the pews. All their hard work, doing what they can to keep the show on the road; their faithful attendance at church services, or running exhibitions or coffee mornings - it will all have come to nothing.

They will have handed it all on to the next generation. Sadly, the next generation don’t seem that interested in church. So will the dear old place be sold to become a museum, or a warehouse?

And yet…. That is not the whole story!

1.You can’t judge the state of the world-wide Christian church by the UK church alone. In many countries, especially in Africa, South America and Asia, Christian numbers are burgeoning. In China there are 67 million Christians; by 2030 it has been estimated there will be 247 million.

2. You can’t judge the whole UK church by tiny, struggling rural congregations; in many cities and suburbs there are lively, thriving, all-age churches, reaching out into their communities with imaginative and effective projects, both social care and evangelistic. And cathedral congregations are growing steadily.

3. Even in rural areas like our own, there are encouraging signs. We have experienced in recent

Church Letter From the Revd. Christopher Jenkin

weeks, on days like Mothering Sunday and Easter, numbers of worshippers several times larger than those found on the average Sunday, and including all ages, not just the oldies! Such projects as “Families Together in Tebay and Orton” (see the poster on a later page) bring in an enthusiastic and mixed-age group.

4. Sunday services do not tell the whole story, either. Many people who might be cautious about claiming to be “Christians”, will still show that they believe in the value of prayer - even if they would find it hard to explain it, and be reluctant to say it publicly. An example: at the Moving Mountains weekend in Ravenstonedale, when invited to fill in a slip with the name of someone who needs prayer, for the slips then to be put together into a “Prayer Chain”, nearly 40 people, most of them not regular churchgoers, took part.

5. According to Google, there are 6,000 searches for “How to become a Christian” in the UK every month. And there are more than 18,000 UK monthly searches for other similar phrases including “How to know Jesus” and “Does God love me?” Apparently there are lots of people who are very open to the Christian faith! It’s just that they mostly don’t go to church to ask their questions.

6. Maybe traditional, formal services have had their day; but if the church can think outside the churchy box, and offer fresh and imaginative ways of approaching God, we may be surprised at how many people will find it offers them a glimpse of the spiritual life, and a way to find a faith in Jesus Christ.

SUNDAY SERVICES IN OUR CHURCHES FOR MAY 2018

I have just come back from a very enjoyable Ploughman’s Lunch in aid of Friends of Tebay Church down at the Social Club. The weather is beginning to warm up at last. The church gardens are now colourful with the daffodils.

It was good to bump into a grandmother whose daughter had just moved into Tebay. A family have also come into a house opposite me recently. So we give a warm welcome to these new members of our community here in Tebay. It’s a very handy place to be on the M6 and be able to get to places easily. When I decided to come there was also a good bus service too but sadly no longer.

After a wet mishap in the Hub last week, it was good to be able to dry off in the sun whilst having a go at pulling up all the dead stuff in the church garden. I was waiting for our churchwarden and her husband to get back from Carlisle to give me a hand. I had been a bit over-enthusiastic tightening the tap on the small water heater owing to it dripping. Imagine my shock when the mechanism totally came off in my hand and the most powerful force of water hit me, worse than a waterfall! I couldn’t even block it up with a wet towel because of the force of the water. To get out I had to get through it. I immediately began to look for the stopcock – I flew everywhere to try and find it but I had no luck. The water flooded into the kitchen and then the lounge. I moved pretty smartly to shift a keyboard up out of danger and loads of heavy boxes full of music. I ran over to the club to see if Penny could help me, and she came and couldn’t find it either, but she managed to find someone who knew how to turn the water off by a tap under the ground outside the church – phew - that was a relief! It turned out there was a stopcock in a small cupboard high up on the wall in the hallway. I have had a busy time making labels to stick on, pointing out where to find the stopcocks quickly in an

emergency. I wouldn’t like anyone else to be in such a panic as I was, unable stop the advancing flood.

There are some lessons to learn

from this. We panic in life if we are in

a situation we cannot control. We all

need guidance of some kind. Those

of us who are Christians believe that

the Bible can guide us in life. There is

a lovely verse in Proverbs: “In all thy

ways acknowledge him and He shall

direct thy paths”.

Another picture was Penny being a

“good neighbour “ to me in helping

me in my dilemma. Then the local

chap who located the tap in the grid.

And later Linda and David coming

with a marvellous machine to suck

up the water and spend hours

helping with the problem I had

precipitated. So we are thankful for

written guidance, and for friends and

neighbours to help us on our way in

life. Let’s trust that we too can be

good neighbours to those around us

when they need our help.

Tebay Primary School

The whole school visited St James’ Church, Tebay, to enjoy ‘Experience Easter’. Thank you to Ronnie and Ian Elliott and everyone else from the Church for a very enjoyable afternoon. Class 3 were invited by the Woodland Trust and the Lune River Trust to go to Ewelock Bank, Greenholme, to plant some trees. The project is to create improved habitat for wildlife and help with slowing the flow of water down to help ease flooding problems further down the river.

Sport: The whole school has enjoyed Badminton train-ing with Ben Davidson from Eden Valley Sports Partnership, thank you Ben and EVSP. We are looking forward to Football training after the Easter holidays.

Cumbria Education Trust arranged a TAG rugby tournament for all the schools within the Trust, which was held at Frenchfields in Penrith. Year 1 and 2 represented the school at the Key Steps Gymnastics final at Penrith Leisure Centre………….. Well done Team Tebay for getting to the finals!

Class 1 and 2 have been busy learning about ‘farming in the past’; they visited the Dales Countryside Museum in Hawes and the Wensleydale Creamery to see how cheese was made. They also visited Abbott Lodge Jersey Ice-Cream Farm to see how ice cream is made. At the end of the trip they tasted the delicious ice cream. Huge thank you to all our parent helpers who ac-companied children and staff on these trips.

Abridged Minutes of the Committee Meeting held on 26th March 2018

1. PRESENT: 6 committee members and one visitor. There were three apologies. 2. Minutes: The Minutes of the Committee Meeting held on Monday 24th April 2017, had been circulated, and were agreed and signed. 3. Matters Arising from the Minutes: The new wooden footbridge supplied by YDNP had been installed near Reveleys. 4.Wildlife Survey of Meldykes: Christa Nelson, Grassland Conservation Officer for the Cumbria Wildlife Trust, had written a report about the land at Meldykes, which is very interesting with several different habitats - 100 species of plant had been identified there, listed in her report. Mixed grazing is best there and stocking rates were suggested. This land probably qualifies to be designated a County Wildlife Site. It was agreed to seek County Wildlife Site designation, and Christa agreed to arrange the necessary survey. Future Letting: as this land needs long term management, a ten-year lease, with possible 5-year break clause, should be used in future. 5. Treasurer’s Report, presented by the Steward. Current account: £5,580.29; Savings account: £8,722.97. The Single Farm Payment of £1,270.31, and all rents, had been received. The insurance premium was about to be paid. 6.Letter from Orton School: A letter had been received from the Head-teacher, asking OMC to consider making a grant towards the cost of the school’s 2018 Residential trips. It was agreed to donate £750. 7. Any Other Business: Hard Standing for vehicles in Knott

Lane: this would be discussed with the tenant and with the YDNP. A sign to the Gamelands Stone Circle should be added to the signpost at the road junction.

Bids for grazing: the Committee would be consulted.

All three of our Key Steps gymnastics teams qualified for the Eden final at Penrith. The final was held last week and yet again our teams performed brilliantly.

Key Steps 1 were 3rd, Keys Steps 2 were 4th and Key Steps 3 were 3rd. Well done to all our gymnasts.

Class 3 had a fantastic Residential to Borrowdale. Thank you to everyone who helped out especially our Governors Mrs Seed, Mrs Arkle

and Mr Petty who helped out during the stay. Huge thanks go to the staff, Mrs Simpson, Miss Potter and Mrs Green, who looked after

the children so well despite being extremely sleep deprived themselves. A quote from one member of staff on their return,

“I don’t think we have ever had a Residential where we had so little sleep!”

The final event of this week has been the Swimming Gala. Again thank you to everyone who has helped with swimming and the gala over the last term, we really appreciate what you do to help everything run so smoothly. All the children swam brilliantly and cheered

each other on. The winning team this year were YELLOW.

Where are they now?

We are in need of some more information about ANY of our ex-pupils (including parents, grandparents etc.) for our lovely ‘Where Are They Now?’ display.

If you know of any ex-pupils who are now over 18 or if YOU are one yourself please could you send us a little bit of information about what you do now

and if possible a photograph. We would love to have lots of ex-pupils both near and far to show our current children

and provide them with ideas for their own futures.

Gone Cuckoo The compelling tale of a bird’s journey

Gone Cuckoo is a father and son collaboration of storyteller,

Malcolm Green and musician, Joshua Green. Together they follow the trail of the cuckoo to explore the

world of this extraordinary creature through stories and songs, music and myths - and a touch of shape

shifting. The show will be flying into Orton Market Hall on Saturday 12 May to carry audiences along with

them on this journey.

It’s just before sunrise at RAF Fylingdales on the North York Moors and a male cuckoo is having a tiny

4.5g radio transmitter strapped to his back. A few weeks later he will have flown thousands of miles south

and five kilometres high over the Sahara Desert, sending signals back to England as he travels through Libya

and Chad to the Congo.

With fact stranger than fiction, the show takes a cuckoo’s eye view of that story as one of a billion birds

that breathe the earth into life as they travel from Europe to Africa and back again.

For thousands of years the cuckoo has been part of folklore and its song has inspired songs, stories and

poems. Now its song diminishes and this secret messenger is teetering on the edge. Does the cuckoo have

something to tell us about our moment in history? Or even about our place in the world? Gone Cuckoo has received support from the British Trust for Ornithology as part of a Cuckoo tracking project. It is touring to Orton Market Hall as part of the Highlights Rural Touring Scheme.

‘An accomplished, engaging and beautifully constructed tour de force – with a message.’ Dave Pritchard, UK Arts and Environment Network

“Storytelling and acoustic music have always been popular with Highlights audiences, “says volunteer promoter, Sally Seed, “so this combination and the conservation theme should make Gone Cuckoo a fascinating as well as an enjoyable evening.”

Date/ Time: Saturday 12th May from 7.30pm Venue: Orton Market Hall Tickets: Adult £9, U16 £5 and Family ticket £20.

Bookings: Tickets available on 01539 624732 or from Orton

Biblical Names – An occasional series by Christopher Jenkin Names go in fashions, and in recent years parents have

started to call their children by names which are found

in the Bible – though they are not always aware of that,

nor of who the Bible character was.

Daniel: The meaning of the name is “God is judge”.

The famous Daniel lived some 500 years before

Christ, at the time when Jerusalem had fallen and the

entire nation of Israel had been taken into captivity in

Babylon. Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, required

some handsome and gifted young men of the captive

Hebrews to be his personal attendants, and Daniel

was one of those chosen for intensive education in

Babylonian culture. He first came to the personal

attention of the King when the King had a disturbing

dream, and Daniel – like Joseph, a thousand years

earlier – was enabled by God to interpret it for him,

and Daniel was raised to high office. Daniel was most

notable for a firm refusal to compromise his

obedience to the God of Israel, and the best known of

all the stories about him was of his being thrown into

a den of lions by Nebuchadnezzar’s successor, Darius,

because of just this resolute faith, for which he was

prepared to die if necessary. “Dare to be a Daniel!”

says a children’s chorus. “Dare to stand alone! Dare

to have a purpose true, and dare to make it known!”

David: The name means “Beloved”. David was the

greatest of all the kings of Israel, living about 1000

BC. His story is told particularly in the 1st and 2nd

Books of Samuel. Chosen as a teenager to succeed

the unsatisfactory King Saul, he first came to

prominence during the constant wars between Israel

and the Philistines, when single-handedly he slew the

mighty Philistine warrior Goliath; David insisted that

it was God who would enable him to do this, just as

God had helped him to kill wild beasts who were

attacking his father’s sheep. This success, however,

made him a target for fierce jealousy from King Saul,

and for years David had to live in exile. This period of

bitter trouble, however, developed another of his

remarkable gifts, of composing many psalms, songs of

faith and worship sung with a harp (the word “psalm”

means “plucked”.) David had his faults, like all of us; a

famous fall from grace involved adultery and murder,

which in turn led to a heart-rending psalm of

repentance: “Have mercy upon me, O God, according

to your unfailing love!” (Ps. 51) Many of David’s

psalms still form a central part of Christian worship

worldwide – the well-known hymn, “Praise, my soul,

the King of heaven” is based on David’s Psalm 103.

A Prayer for our Village

Thank you Lord, for our Chapels and Church, and our fellowship with one

another. We thank you for Jesus’ love that binds us together.

As we look out into our village, give us your grace and love

for all we meet and have dealings with. May your power and authority give us courage to share Jesus. May you, Jesus, shine through. May your spirit stir the hearts and minds of people to be responsive to

your Word. Amen.

Mountains Mission, who would like to know more about the Christian faith,

The course is due to start early in May.

Peter’s Story I was born in May 1948, so I have a few years on the

clock now, and was raised in North Carlisle. Mother was a dinner lady, and my father was a well-known man with his racing pigeons.

I was always a happy and mischievous kid - always looking for things - and one day in the bottom of my parents' wardrobe I found a tin box, and inside it my adoption papers. There was my name, and alongside it the names of my birth parents. I was numb reading this, and a couple of days later I approached my Mum, who wouldn't speak to me about it. So at that stage I buried all this in the back of my mind.

When I was about 35 I asked Mother again, who told me about it, but made me promise I wouldn't tell anyone else until after she died. I felt on my own. I had no family: did anyone love me? Did anyone care?

I grew up, knowing in my heart that somewhere in this world was a loving Father and loving Brother – our Saviour – because that’s how I had been taught to talk about God. But I still parked it and didn’t do anything about it.

Later on in my life, the penny started to drop – a gradual period of understanding that I have a Father in heaven, and that Jesus my brother died to save me – through him I have a life to look forward to, not just a family life here on this planet, but a real future

So at my great age, I've come alive again! I love the family greeting we enjoy at church; you wouldn't get that at M&S or the GPs on a Sunday or Monday. It's a proper family -- the best ever.

Peter, 69, Carlisle

A Report from the Revd. Canon Julius Kithaghenda,

Vicar of All Saints’ Church, Kasese, Uganda, was received on 13th April 2018, and was presented

to the Annual Parochial Church Meeting of All Saints’ Church, Orton,

on 15th April 2018.

Greetings from All Saints’ Church. We had very good Easter celebrations and we have a lot of rains in our region. (This is of course seen as a great blessing in that part of the world!) We received a new church lay reader,

Immaculate, who is helping us in pastoral outreach.

We are completing flooring of the upper part of the church with the offices this month.

We have strengthened the Mothers’ and Pregnant Women’s Fellowship which meets every Saturday.

We have planned a Parish Council meeting on 29th April to discuss how to raise funds to enable us purchase a house for accommodation of staff, and a space for Sunday School children’s class. Two of the neighbours of the church are willing to sell. We request for your prayers because each of the houses costs about 200,000,000 Uganda Shillings (= about £39,215). We want the Council to plan several activities to raise funds, and to begin fundraising in June and have a climax in October.

Staff accommodation is a big challenge on our expenditure which compels us to plan to have our own church houses to accommodate our three staff members (the Vicar, assistant Vicar, Lay Reader). We are hopeful that God will enable us to raise the required funds.

We request for your prayers. Convey our Christian love and greetings to the

Vicar and all the Christians in Orton!

Yours in Christ,

Rev. Canon Julius Kithaghenda

Orton Churchyard Conservation

Project

Grave headstones A number of damaged headstones in the church-

yard have been repaired, some by volunteers and some professionally. Other headstones which had fallen, or which were unstable, have been secured.

Interpretation Board An interpretation board,

with information about what has been achieved and artwork illustrating wildlife found in the churchyard, is being prepared, and a draft copy has been received.

A number of minor alterations are being made, and we still await the necessary permissions.

We hope that the Board will be erected before too long.

Now that summer is just around the corner, our Head Chef Scott and his talented kitchen team have been creating plenty of new dishes using the bountiful supply

of local fruit & vegetables found on our doorstep. This month’s highlights include:

Wild garlic, new season asparagus, heritage tomatoes, courgettes, and much more.

Why not come and see what all the fuss is about? Enjoy our full a la carte menu in the candlelit restaurant, sample local hand-pulled ales in the bar, relax with a

coffee in the lounge, or attempt a spot of sun-seeking in our attractive beer garden. Rest those walking legs in one of our 4AA Gold Star rooms, many of

which are dog friendly, and we even have our 3 bell tents up and running for the more adventurous amongst us.

We are open all day, every day, serving breakfast, coffee and cake, lunch, snacks,

and dinner, including a traditional Sunday Roast.

We also offer private rooms for special occasions and function hire. Please ask

one of our team for more information.
