Hello and welcome to the latest edition of LINK Magazine!

I’m sure you’re all very well prepared for Christmas morning, but if not, don’t worry – there’s loads of cracking festive deals inside with something for everyone.

And you don’t even have to traipse round packed shops dodging patches of ice and far-too-tempting sale signs – you can find your perfect gift within these very pages, as well as valuable services you may need during these cold, winter days.

I know the shops have us thinking it started in November (earlier and earlier every year, eh), but it really is the time to start getting in the mood for Christmas now.

So invite your family round, grab a mince pie, a glass of sherry, stick some carols on the radio and have an amazing time.

Of course Christmas also means it’s almost time to say goodbye to 2012, and whether you’re reflecting on a great year, or celebrating its end, everybody at LINK wishes you the very best for Christmas and the new year. Thank you so much for your support this year.

Congratulations to the winners of last month’s competition. Christine McMurray won our Where Am I? Competition, so well done - £50 is on its way to you!

A family-run business with over 35 years’ experience, The Bathroom & Heating Co. Ltd is your local plumber and bathroom installer in Blackpool.

And with a large local customer base, they are proud to have worked hard to build up such a sterling reputation – for honesty, reliability, and excellent workmanship. In fact, most of their business now comes from word of mouth and personal recommendations.

They cover all domestic plumbing and heating services, and everything is installed, repaired, serviced, replaced, and safety checked with clear and well communicated information at every stage to avoid any hidden surprises.

The Bathroom & Heating Co. Ltd also provides a 24-hour emergency call-out service and specialises

in gas boiler breakdowns and repairs. Their expert service will have your boiler quickly and safely repaired to the highest standards in the shortest time and with the minimum of fuss and disruption.

They can quickly diagnose and repair an existing problem on your conventional, combi, system, or condensing boiler, and their diagnostics and testing procedures can check for any problems waiting round the corner!

Remember that the best way to avoid untimely breakdowns and emergencies is to have your boiler regularly serviced – it’s not expensive and could save you a lot of unnecessary expense, worry, and headache.

The Bathroom & Heating Co. Ltd is also an expert in bathrooms, and can offer you the perfect solution in terms of quality, design, performance and luxury to give you not only a dream bathroom, but also that warm feeling of reassurance that comes from knowing you chose the right people and got the best!

Whatever your budget, they look after everything from start to finish, including all plumbing, installation, studwork, accessories, cabinets, mirrors, tiling and decorating to leave you with a finished, fully-functioning bathroom that just needs to be admired.

The Blackpool & Heating Co Ltd would like to wish you all a Happy Christmas and New Year

Postcard from FleetwoodYour mind might be on Christmas and the festive season, but along the Fylde Coast the tide continues to come in and out twice every day – bringing a whole lot of debris with it.

The debris is not just unsightly, it’s also a serious threat to wildlife which lives on the beaches and in our seas. It’s also a marker of a much more serious problem, and the sanitary waste which washes up stems from overflows from the sewage system.

At times of heavy rainfall, and let’s face it we’ve had more than our fair share, there’s too great a volume of water at once for the system to cope. It only takes blockages with fats, rags and things that shouldn’t go down the drain, and the sewage system overflows into watercourses. That might be wrong, but it would be really wrong for it to flood our streets and homes. Each one of us can help by not putting things down our sinks, drains and toilets that should go in a bin.

We want to know what’s happening in Fleetwood, so we can share it with everyone else. And don’t forget

the Events Calendar – keep an eye on it for meetings, events, entertainment and more. You can find it at www.visitFleetwood.info along with lots more. You can subscribe for email updates to make sure that you don’t miss out and follow the Facebook page too.

If you’ve got anything to tell us just email [email protected]

or ring 07932 143431.

Suda Thai cuisine opened it’s doors in Jan 2009 as a takeaway and was soon able to provide a delivery service and intimate dinning experience. The popularity of the takeaway and dinning area quickly out grew the size of the premises allowing for a restaurant and bar extension including a full refurbishment.

Since opening many of her customers new and old have been through the doors as the word spread about Suda’s exceptional cooking. These customers have returned to see the newly refurbished restaurant and bar (seating 38-40 diners) enjoying an authentic dinning experience described as “imitate, tasteful, ambient music and intriguing artwork” Robin Duke.

“Any fears that big wouldn’t be beautiful can be dismissed” Suda Thai accepts bookings small and large taking advance reservations for weekends, therefore booking for a Friday and Saturday is a must. Christmas bookings are now being accepted.

Suda is open for takeaway seven nights a week and also has a delivery service available running from Sunday to Thursday to surrounding areas. There is a small charge for this service depending on the postcode.

Demand for Sudas food is so great that plans are in place to develop the delivery service to include Fridays and Saturdays.

Suda Thai Cuisine has been rated 10/10 value for money. In the Gazette’s 7 days food & drink, Eatingout Robin Dukes describes the food as “a culinary haven – excellent and plentiful”

THE MOUNT RACING CLUB UPDATE

Racecourse ownership has never been so easy and affordableThat’s the message the Mount Racing Club are trying to get across as they get ready to launch their brand new and exciting syndicate for 2013.

So how is it “so easy and affordable” you ask, well let the Mount Racing Club try and explain how it all works.

Firstly as a registered club we will set out to buy the majority share of a horse, this then ensures we have the naming rights and that the horse will run in our colours when it races.

Next we divide the horse up into shares ready for sale, these are in either 2.5%, 5% or 10% values which can be bought as an individual or as part of a group. For example if a few friends wanted to get together and split the costs they could buy a 5% share between them. They would still all get full entitlements such as badges and share of prize money,we would just require one lead name from them. It’s a great way for a few friends to get involved and lessen the costs and still enjoy some fun days out at the races. It’s exactly how Andy and I started out when we bought a 2.5% share between us a few years ago and split the costs which worked out at just over £1 a day.

Once your share is purchased then there is nothing else to worry about as The Mount Racing Club and your trainer Karl Burke take care of everything else. You will receive a monthly Newsletter that will keep you up to date with all the goings on in the club and will be invited on regular visits to the stables to check out your horses progress and watch him work on

the Gallops. You will be kept informed of any plans regarding his races and be given plenty of notice when entries are made so you can arrange your days out in advance.

When race day arrives you will be able to collect your complimentary Owners badge from the course, guest badges are also available given prior notice, then you have full access to all the facilities including the private Owners bar where at the majority of courses you will receive free drinks and food vouchers. Once the race is off you have the choice to watch it either on TV in the comfort of your lounge or on the private viewing balcony reserved for Owners and Trainers and hopefully cheer home your very own winning horse.

All in all it is a fantastic experience that you can share with friends or family as you become part of a group of like minded people who all share the same passion for the Sport of Kings, an experience that like we said has never been “so easy and affordable”

For more information about the new syndicate for 2013 you can contact

The club’s involvement with the community continued as the focus lately has been on promoting the important moral of respect. Defender Youl Mawéné visited Ansdell Primary School to educate children on identifying unacceptable behaviour and its effects on others.

Fleetwood Town FC Community Trust have decided that respect workshops for local schools will be this season’s programme, and the project has now been launched. The Trust is aiming to run sessions for 1200 Fylde Coast youngsters between now and end of February 2013. The purpose of the session is to help youngsters understand the consequences of their conduct on others and appreciate that their behaviour can affect not just themselves but others at school, home and in the community.

In other community news, Fleetwood supported the “let’s kick racism out of football” scheme in an attempt to raise awareness of racism, and reduce it in any way we can. “Kick it Out” t-shirts were worn by players during their warm-ups, and a “One

game, One community” flag was held on the pitch prior to kick-off at Highbury against AFC Wimbledon.

The most exciting news for Fleetwood Town in November saw Barry Ferguson join the Cod Army on a three-month loan deal from neighbours Blackpool. The former Scotland captain made his debut in a 3-0 victory over Bromley, and showed what a vital part he can play during his short-term stay at Highbury.

In the FA Cup, Fleetwood progressed to the 2nd round and drew Aldershot at home. A win there could potentially set up a game with Premier League opposition, and in League 2, Town remain in a sturdy, respectable position. Can be found on page 30

Hello So, I was right, the Fleetwood Community Bonfire was a great success as predicted in last month’s article! Having such an event has drastically reduced the number of call outs to the emergency services, both Lancashire Fire and Rescue and Lancashire Constabulary. With the tighter controls on the sale and use of fireworks, I think you will agree that compared to five years or so ago, problems encountered nowadays are much reduced. There was a week long campaign at the end of October to get into schools and speak with the local kids. This builds on already existing positive relationship between us all so we don’t see any of the despicable sights shown on the local TV news recently where fire engines/officers have come under attack from local yobs whilst attending incidents.

We are well in to the dark evenings now and with that come the need to be even more aware of the need to check cars etc for any lighting defects. Check everything regularly and replace. Keep your vehicle legal and don’t risk getting a ticket! With that comes a polite request to drop

off your kids at school carefully…You might only stop for a brief moment for them to jump out, but that’s all the time needed to create a dangerous situation for someone crossing nearby get run over. Don’t be alarmed if you receive a ticket or get reported for any offences if you choose to ignore this advice, it is the safety of the pedestrians and other road users that’s paramount, not the convenience of the offending few who choose to stop where they like. It is a concern of most head teachers in Fleetwood that the volume of traffic around their schools at the start and end of the day does not pose unnecessary risks to their children.

I’m going to repeat something I had in my last article as it’s something I am really proud of because this is making a real difference to the lives of many on a daily basis. Anti-Social Behaviour in Fleetwood continues to reduce. Your dedicated Neighbourhood Team are busy working on a number of issues to reduce this even further and the Youth Bus will return to Martindale Park. You may be reading this thinking that ASB doesn’t feel like it’s reducing to you… and if that’s the case we don’t know about it.

If we don’t know about it, we can’t react to it. Call us, let us know, let us deal.

If you are contemplating setting up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme in your street, get in touch with our Divisional Liaison Officer, Anne Edmondson on 01524 596615, who will be happy to answer all your questions.

Our PACT meetings are changing…Watch this space for the new format to commence in January 2013. Due to the very low turn outs in recent years in December there will not be a PACT meeting now until the new format is published. That doesn’t mean we are not there for you to come and discuss your issues. Pick up the phone, email us, call in at the station or request we attend your home to discuss anything that is concerning you. The number is 101 or via our Lancashire Constabulary website, or if you prefer to remain anonymous, you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Thank you PS Dan Whitaker

Our little girl Chloe New is 10 years old, attends Shakespeare Primary School and suffers with the condition Cerebral Palsy. This makes the muscles in Chloe’s legs very tight and as a result walking is difficult and very tiring. She currently walks with the aide of a walking frame and cannot stand without it. There is a surgical procedure called Selective Dorsal Rhizotimy (SDR) that would help Chloe lead a normal life. The operation itself has an almost 100% success rate and we have been advised that Chloe is as near to a perfect candidate for this as you can get. We originally tried to get this operation funded through the NHS. Chloe went to a hospital in Oswestry and completed all relevant tests and passed them all with flying colours and was accepted as a candidate for the operation.

Unfortunately when we applied for funding through our local NHS we were turned down. We got our Local MP involved, supporting letters from Chloe’s specialist and physiotherapist and appealed against the decision. To our disappointment the appeal fell on deaf ears and the NHS took the decision to uphold the original decision to decline funding even though another patient in Blackburn

had received the funding early in 2012. It is because of this that we now need to fund raise to get the money together to get this life changing operation for Chloe. The hospital in Oswestry only accept NHS funded patients so we have had to look else where for the operation. The operation will take place at St Louis Children’s hospital in Missouri and including travel expenses will cost approximately £45k.

The operation involves the surgeon making an incision into Chloe back at the bottom of her spine and testing the nerve endings to see which ones are the most responsive. These are causing Chloe’s legs to be extremely stiff and making it very difficult for her to walk. They then cut the most responsive ones which will in turn reduce the stiffness in her legs. Chloe will then need intensive physiotherapy afterwards to ensure she gets the best effects of the operation. The end result being that Chloe will walk unaided and be far more independent. This means more to Chloe than anything in the entire world and as a parent I cannot let this opportunity of a better life pass us by just because the NHS isn’t willing to help. If you are a parent or Aunty or Uncle ask yourself how you would feel if a family member who was completely dependant on other people had the chance to become independent and have a much better quality of life, wouldn’t you do everything you could to make this happen.

This year’s community bonfire was another great success as over 3000 people enjoyed a fantastic firework display on Rossall School Field, Westway. Richard Newson of Fleetwood Rotary Club said, “Our fourth annual bonfire was a real community effort with many organisations pitching in to help. Rotary, the Fire and Rescue Service, Police and Wyre Borough Council were supported by Regenda, Rossall School, Farmer Parr, AGC Chemicals, Halsall’s, Builders’ Supplies, EAS Electric, Adam Plummer Disco, Fleetwood Town Council and Festive Lights Committee, Community Payback and Bam Nuttall. We are particularly grateful for the understanding and support of residents who live close to the site.”

“The event relies on the support of the community in contributing £2 a head to cover the costs. The fireworks alone cost £4000 and, as it is not run for profit but is

organised purely to ensure a safe and enjoyable bonfire night for the people of Fleetwood, our thanks go to all those who helped and supported.”

This year, soldiers from the 2nd Batallion Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment based at Weeton Camp helped with the building of the bonfire and a £1000 contribution from Regenda helped to keep the cost of admission at a very reasonable £2.

Shaun MacNeill President of Fleetwood Rotary commented,

“For the bonfire to continue each year we rely on everyone paying the £2 admission fee and, although we obviously can’t insist, we are asking all those who prefer to watch from the roadway to also contribute £2 each. We don’t make a profit on the event and if we are unable to cover the costs we will either have to raise the price for all or discontinue this fantastic community bonfire and firework display. That would be a great shame and is something we definitely want to avoid.”

‘Planting the seeds of hope and faith in the community’When the news appears to be full of stories about recession, austerity and depravation it is easy to focus on our own troubles, but it is precisely in times such as these that the most vulnerable in society need help, and it was this need that drove Matthew Branson to set up The Mustard Seed Group to help the homeless, the unemployed, the depressed and even those who are just lonely.

Held at St Peter’s Church, Fleetwood every Monday Night from 6.30pm – 9.30pm, The Mustard Seed Group is an outreach service that offers not only a hot meal, but also valuable advice from a number of self help associations including Add Action and J2R, all of which is delivered in a warm and friendly atmosphere.

A committed Christian and long-time resident of Fleetwood, Matthew’s aim is to build an organisation that provides the help and support that will encourage people to take responsibility for their lives and go on to make a positive contribution to the local community.

In the 9 months since the Group started, they have already moved beyond providing a hot meal and friendship and have become more involved in finding long term solutions for those in need. Supported by the church, the Group has been reaching out to local landlords to try and find supported accommodation for people trapped in the cycle of sleeping rough or in hostels, as Matthew explains,

“Putting a long term roof over someone’s head is key to providing the stability that improves lives. We often find that, once they have a settled home, people find a new lease of life and are far more willing to be involved in our volunteer scheme, which in turn builds confidence and self esteem.”

However, one of the biggest issues facing the Group is funding and this is where John Sorensen and colleagues at the DWP came in. John has been a volunteer for the Group since the beginning and his enthusiasm for their work encouraged his workmates to lend a hand by holding a bring and buy sale in their lunch hour, complete with home made cakes, a raffle and the auction of a signed Fleetwood Town FC shirt. The support of fundraisers is crucial to The Mustard Seed Group achieving its aims, as John describes,

“Volunteering in person is obviously central to the support we try to provide to those in need across our community and we welcome anyone who can help us in work, but without the efforts of those who help to raise funds on our behalf, we would not be able to do what we do and make a real difference to the lives of people in such difficult circumstances.”

At the last count the amount raised by the staff at DWP stood at over £400 with the auction of the shirt still to come, a fantastic amount that will go such a long way to helping people in need in the Fleetwood area.

If you can help The Mustard Seed Group in any way at all, you can get in touch at: [email protected]

Or you can find them on Facebook at: mustardseedgroup.fleetwood
