Hello and welcome to the May edition of LINK-Magazine.

Here at LINK Towers we hope you’re all enjoying the first signs of summer. We can’t wait to get the gazebo out, BBQ fired up and the beer cooled; so let’s all keep our fingers crossed for some great weather across the Fylde Coast!

Major new developments to report at Visit Cleveleys for this month, with the unveiling of the brand new website! It’s a new look, new features and linked to another five sites across the coast! If you like Cleveleys then you need to have a look and keep watching – for all the latest!

The trams are back in town, and after a fabulous week in March the heavens opened just as the first tram was welcomed to Cleveleys on 3 April. Never mind, it was a great celebration with a cake in its own image and champagne, followed by relief that the service is once again running.

Cleveleys Chamber of Trade are hard at it planning the Classic Vehicle Event for Sunday 19 August, and it’s on track to be a fabulous day, with Victoria Road West closed off and full of cars and attractions. There

will be all kinds of things for all the family, plus cars lining the promenade too.

The Sea Change project is coming along nicely too. The base for the Sea Swallow sculpture is being carved as we write, with the intention that the sculpture is in place for the 22nd June.

Of course 22nd June is another big day for Cleveleys too, when the Olympic Torch comes to town! This is your advance warning to get your plans organised, decide what kind of

flag you are waving, and make sure you are at the roadside to catch this once in a lifetime event.

Spring Term highlightsManor Beach has had another successful term celebrating a range of achievements, one exciting highlight being the winning of both the Netball league and Rally. The team played extremely well and were recognised for their

skill and sporting nature. They are now excited to be representing Manor Beach as they play teams in other areas. A team of children also took part in the Cross Country event. Although we did not win as a team, they all put in maximum effort and one of our Yr 6 boys came third. Fantastic. We also had a successful book week where children completed a range of activities from enjoying stories, writing book reviews and designing wanted posters for their favourite characters to name just a few. The week ended with children coming to school in their pyjamas and sharing their favourite bedtime stories.

In March, school took part in World Maths Day challenges. This was an opportunity for children of all ages to compete in maths challenges on the internet with children from all around the world. Children worked hard practising for the event. The children with the 3 highest scores on the day were presented with certificates. Well done to all the children who took part.

Grandparent’s day was another successful event, where grandparents thoroughly enjoyed listening to poems, songs and looking at pictures the children had painted of them.

Our musical achievements have also been rewarded this term with the school being awarded the Silver Sing Up award. This reflects the hard work the staff and children have put in and our commitment as a school to music.

Currently the school is working on an eco project and the Spring term has seen the planting of trees around the edge of the school field by our Yr5 children. The children showed enthusiasm towards the project and are looking forward to the next part.

The term ended with our Easter celebrations. What a great display of Easter bonnets, eggs and baskets! It has been a busy term and we look forward to the challenges and achievements of the summer term.

The Rugby season has almost come to a close for Thornton-Cleveleys RUFC with both teams only having a few competitive fixtures left to play.

The 1st team have played two games since the last print and the 2nds have played 3. Both the 1st team matches were at home and they managed to keep their hopes of an unbeaten season intact by securing two wins. The first came against a tough Ormskirk side who were on a winning streak of their own when they turned up at Thornton YMCA. Ormskirk had started the season badly but bucked their ideas up towards the end of the season and had won their last 7 games in a row, the 1sts knew it would be a strong side turning up to face them and they kept their heads well to win the game 19 - 0. Their 2nd win came against a travelling Upper Eden side, Thornton-Cleveleys had a tough time against Upper Eden when they met up in Cumbria earlier on in the season but were aware that Eden’s home form was always alot better than their away form. The visitors arrived with a 15 man squad but proved they weren’t just here to make up the numbers and took it to the home side right from the off, with such a good start to the game no-one could have predicted what happened next, Thornton-Cleveleys producing their biggest win in their 85 year history winning the game 130 - 0! It was an outstanding performance by the lads and a brilliant achievement. The 2nd team played all 3 of their recent matches away, the 1st was to top of the table Chorley, this was always going to be a tough game and although the 2nds put in a sterling effort they came away the losers 28 - 5. Their next fixture was against local rivals Preston Grasshoppers, these games are always fiesty affairs and the 2nds have struggled in the

past to out fox the more mature players in the hoppers team yet this team youth prevailed. The 2nds found out soon enough that they had the legs on this side and produced the goods to come away with a 0 - 52 victory. The up and coming 3rd team have also played two friendly fixtures, one against The Village Spartans who hale from Sale and the other against Chorley 3rds. Thornton-Cleveleys lost their first game against The Village Spartans but were successful against Chorley 3rds coming away with the win. Well done fellas! Although the leagues are coming to an end there’s lots of other Rugby to look forward to in the off season. Thornton-Cleveleys RUFC host the annual Robbie Mckendrick Super 10’s tournament in August, take a look on the website, www.thorntonrugby.com for more details. As with any Rugby season ending at Thornton-Cleveleys RUFC there comes a time to celebrate the time that’s past. The lads have got lots to look forward to including Players Night and The End of Season Ball. The End of Season Ball will mark the 85th year of club history and everyone involved is looking forward to a great night to celebrate a truly superb season. Games are played on Saturday afternoons at Thornton YMCA and kick off at 3pm. Training is on Mondays and Wednesdays, it starts at 6.45pm and usually ends around 8.30pm. Everybody is welcome to train, play and support so come down to your local club if you’d like to get involved. We’d love to see you there!

Sarah Percival from Thornton was also on hand with her ‘Inspired jewellery’ collection with some amazing jewellery at exceptionally low prices and brilliant donations to our charity pot.May has traditionally been an evening ‘out and about’ and this year we are meeting at The Marine Hall in Fleetwood at 6.30pm where we will follow a historic walk which is approximately 1.5 miles and includes a ‘quiz on the go’ .New ladies arrive every meeting- you are all welcome, any age.
