Literature is more than a piece of writing that clarifies or explains. It delights and reveals (Anderson, 2006).Children's literatureorjuvenile literatureincludes stories, books and poems that are enjoyed by and targeted primarily towards children. Modern children's literature is classified in two different waysby its kinds or by the intended age of the reader.What is childrens literature?

Picture books includingboard books, concept books (teaching analphabetorcountingfor example), pattern books and wordless books.Traditional literature, including folktales, which convey the legends, customs, superstitions and beliefs of people in past times. This can be further broken down intomyths,fables,legends andfairy tales.Fiction includingfantasy,realistic fiction andhistorical fiction.Non-fiction.Biographyandautobiography.Poetry and verse.

Types of childrens literature (According to Anderson, 2006)Childrens literature began to be published on a wide scale in the 17th century.Up until the 19th century, books written for children were entirely religious, instructional or for the improvement of their morals and manners.During the 20th century, there were changes seen in topics e.g. technology, terrorism, comics, novels.

Relevance of Childrens Literature

It helps them to develop linguistic competency. It develops children's growth as readers and learners. It teaches children to appreciate the written word. It helps children develop important language skills that will help them learn to read on their own. It helps to learn social skills and attention spans. It introduces the child to new concepts.Why do children read?
