I saw an ad on the television newslast night for the story about LindaRonstadt and her appearance onSUNDAY MORNING, the CBStelevision news magazine, and whenI saw it, I realized how long it hadbeen since I had shared anything withmy Posse. Then, when I came in theoffice this morning, I had received acopy of the story above about mybeloved Linda, who shows onceagain her courage, grace, and class indealing with this dreaded anddebilitating disease. It is at #1 above,and I attach as #2, my review of herwonderful autobiography for those ofyou are her fans. I wrote it in 2013,but I re-read her book overChristmas, and played her musicagain and again, and stand by it. Mymourning for her has already started,in large part because she can nolonger sing (“even in the shower,”she says in the CBS show) and with

  • few exceptions, doesn’t venture farfrom the Bay area, even for publictalks. I thank Posse Member SteveBender for the original note, and formany other things.

Speaking of the Bay area, where VanMorrison keeps a home, I owe you areview of my recent two nights inLas Vegas with him on his residencythere, and will get to it as soon as Ican, along with my upcoming reviewof the Houston appearance of TheZombies, soon to be inducted into theRock and Roll Hall of Fame. Inaddition, I am on a panel at UHLCand hosting The Slants lead singerSimon Tam, who took the federalgovernment to court to appeal theirdenial of the requested trademark ofthe group’s name. It had been denied,on the grounds that no trademarkswere registered for “disparaging”words. He won a U.S. SupremeCourt case on the matter, and he iscoming to town to talk about it withme and UH law students, especiallyour entertainment and intellectualproperty students.  This is going to be

  • very cool, as he has been aninspiration in his efforts. He is also amember of my Posse, and may be theonly rock and roller to publish a lawreview article about his successfulSCOTUS case. More to come on allthese developments.

This tidbit is just enough to beg yourpatience, and I promise I will be backin the Posse saddle soon. There isfascinating music and entertainmentlaw material that comes across myscreen almost every day, and I amanxious to share my thoughts with allof you, knowing I will get greatfeedback and engagement. In all myyears of teaching, I am a deeper holenow than I have ever been—deadlines and writing/serviceobligations. It is also my lastsemester of law teaching, so there isa lot of closing down and rummagingthrough 37+ years at UH.

More coming soon, so watch thisspace,
