President’s Perspective

With the high holidays over, it is again time to prepare for our late fall and winter activities. First, is the Lox Box, which is something ev-eryone can participate in, either as a worker, by packing and/or deliver-ing, or as a consumer, by eating. Of course, doing both is even better. Our Sisterhood rummage sale will take place on November 13. Again, workers are needed to sort the goods and to monitor the sale it-self. Sisterhood’s funds are used to support the shul, so everyone should be supporting the Sisterhood. More information on both of these events can be found in this Bulletin. If you are a lawyer, or even if you are not, consider attending the Bender Jewish Legal Seminar which will take place on December 11. This event has provided thought provoking presentations, and is a nice way to spend a Sunday morning after davening. If you have not picked up your LJCAGBI Calendar – Directory for 5777 (2016/17), they are available in front of the Shul office. In order to stay current with Shul activities, please join our email list. Simply email [email protected] and request to receive our weekly an-nouncements. Also, check out our newly redesigned web page at www.ljcagbi.org. In addi-tion to getting information on shul events, you can pay pledges and make donations using Paypal. Before we completely move on from the holiday season, and while our services are still fresh in your minds, I would appreciate you providing me with a “review” of the holiday season. What did you like, and what could we do better in the future? Were you inspired? Were you comfortable? Please send your comments by email to [email protected] or leave a note for me in the office.

Have a happy ChanukahLarry Miller

The Rabbi’s Study—continued from page 1

Page 4

provide the average Babylonian Jew at that time the opportunity to study and compre-hend the Torah text, this was a recommended formula to follow. About one thousand years later the French sage Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki (a/k/a Rashi) wrote a commentary on the entire Torah that helped clarify the basic meaning of the Torah text. Studying the Torah text with both Rashi’s commentary and Targum Onkelos became so popular that printers of the Torah text made sure to flank the text with Rashi’s commentary (in a distinguishing font) on one side and Targum Onkelos on the other side. If you look at the ArtScroll Stone Chumash that we use in our Shul you will see that these three texts are the only three Hebrew texts found on each (He-brew) page. I am happy to introduce a new spin on an old class that Rabbi Lehrfield (and I) have offered for many years. At 6:45 pm Monday-Thursday (and Sunday between Mincha & Maariv), I will teach the first Aliya of the weekly Torah portion. Along with the Torah text I will study each commentary of Onkelos and select Rashi com-mentaries. While each session is self-containing, obviously, the more a student attends the more s/he will learn. I enjoy teaching skills. These include how to read Rashi script and understanding the Aramaic translation/commentary of Onkelos. There is an international educational initiative known as Daf Yomi. Literally meaning “a (two-sided) page (of Talmud) daily,” these classes are taught all over the world to those who wish to review the entire Talmud. If one learns a Daf a day, then they will complete the entire Talmud in about seven years. To master a Daf Yomi class, one needs to be able to read/comprehend Aramiac and Rashi’s commentary. In addition to our Shul members, I hope that my new class (Sh’nayim Mik’ra v’Echad Targum v’Rashi) will also attract Daf Yomi students who did not have the opportunity to matriculate through day school and whose Aramaic and Rashi skills could use some strengthening. If one learns one Aliya per year, a student will have reviewed the entire Torah with Targum Onkelos and Rashi commentary in seven years. I encourage you to come to our revamped daily Torah study class and stay for Maariv. Also, please get the word out to others outside of our Shul community of this learning opportunity. Along with my wife Marilyn and family, I wish everyone a healthy, peaceful, hap-py, successful and educational New Year 5777,

Rabbi James M. Gordon, J.D.

Davening Leadership During the Holydays On behalf of the worship committee, we would like to thank all those who davened so beautifully and those who participated in the entire service making the High Holidays and Chaggim so meaningful for all of us. In the main Sanctuary, we extend a special thanks to Mr. Paul Hyman, Aaron Goldman, Gary Goodman, Dr Yitzchak Hoffman, Dr. Joseph Silberman, Paul Kramer, Henry Kalter, Scott Shreiber, and our new Cantor Jerry Markovitz. A special thanks to Rabbi Gordon and Rabbi Lehrfield (Emeritus). Rabbi Gordon conducted Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur services in an inspirational and flawless manner. We are so fortunate to have two such learned Torah Scholars leading our congregation. Please take note to the fact that if you have a special need, or need an aliya or wish to daven or chant a haftorah, please inform the Gabbi or a worship committee person who will help expidite your requests and needs. May G-d grant a good and healthy year for all of us and to our Shul.

Respectfully, David Marcus, worship chairman (2016)

The Mechitzah Minyon Another year is coming to a close (although I write this before it is over), so I again want to take time to look back at the past year and take stock of our Minyon. As always, I miss Hersh Rosman’s guidance. As always, I want to emphasize that we are a team in the Mechitzah, whether we daven in two Minyonim or together during the winter months. I appreciate the members who give up that extra little bit of sleep so that those of us saying Kaddish can do so. It may sound repetitive, but I cannot stress enough the stead-fast participation of daveners Dan Gutstein, Jonah Gutstein (now a veteran), Jay Gold-stein, Moshe Goldson, Mort Zelickman, Howard Vernof and Howard Gillman. I welcome our newest member, newly retired Rabbi Lehrfield, emeritus, without whose guidance all these years I truly would be lost. We have our Yamim Nora’im corps, with ushers Adam Rhine and Shirley Derdiger. Dan Gutstein starts our davening off. Aaron Shafter joins us as davener, shofar blower extraordinaire and resident Kohain. As always, the ladies complement our Minyon and are every bit as important; their suffering through cold spells downstairs is acknowledged and appreciated; it’s hard to satisfy everyone. During the Shlosh Regalim and winter, when we combine the Minyonim, I am pleased to receive the added assistance of David Marcus, Worship Chair, Paul Kramer and the regular members of that Minyon, including our President, Larry Miller, and Rabbi

James Gordon. I understand the challenge of losing members and still supporting the Shabbos and Yom Tov Minyonim and pray we continue to rise to that challenge for years to come. As always, there are so many others who come together to make us succeed. I hope I do not offend anyone by omitting them; any such omission is unintentional. From the Catering Department

What a wonderful time everyone had at the glorious Gala for Rabbi & Chavie. It was worthy of a Red Carpet (which we didn’t have). To see so many (excuse the expression) ‘Old Timers’ was truly delightful. I’m referring to people from 40 or 50 years ago who came to honor Rabbi & Chavie. It reminded me of when we used to have regular annual banquets with 200 or more people. It was inspiring. And of course everyone was all ‘gussied’ up. It actually made me feel younger (for a few moments), like going back in time. I must give my personal Yasher Koach to Marcia & Paul for a job well done. They assembled their committees and everyone did their job. It showed. They managed to make everyone smile. It was truly a joyous event. I admit I only cried once, when the youngest Rabbi Lehrfield spoke. What is it with these Lehrfield men, that every one of them is a natural borne speaker? How lucky we’ve been. As the New Year settles in, I know that everyone truly appreciates our friendly kiddushes every Shabbat. Just look around (next Shabbat), long after we’re through eating, our members stay and visit. As Rabbi told us a long time ago, “when we eat together as friends we get to know each other better, we become family. And that is exactly what we are, a Family.

Okay, now for a little bit of humor.

A man’s watch breaks. He walks down the street & sees a shop with an enor-mous watch hanging in the window. He goes in with his broken watch. The man behind the counter is a pious Jew with a long beard. He says, “I don’t fix watches.” I’m a mohel. The customer says, “oh my gosh, than why do you have a large watch hanging in your window?” “Mister, what do you suggest I hang in my window?” A Jew converts to Christianity. The next morning his wife sees him wearing tfil-lin & davening. “I thought you were now a Christian,” she says. “Oiy”, he says, smacking his head, “goyishe kop.” Bon Appetit

BUILDING COMMITTEE As we begin the Jewish New Year of 5777 , let us think about how we can keep our synagogue spiritually strong and financially viable, as well as take advantage of year-end tax deductions for charitable giving.

Spiritual viability can be achieved by making sure the “Daily Minyon”, both morning and evening, is functioning without the need for last minute requests to attend.

Financial strength comes from your generosity in support of the ongoing fundraising projects. For example, our “Synagogue Restoration Project” has a long way to go before we are fully funded. We rely on your donations, as well as occasional major gifts to maintain the structure and utility of our building, or to undertake new projects to beautify our Shul.

You can support the Restoration Project and add your names to the beautiful mural, designed by Dr. Marc Feder. Please start the New Year of 5777 and end the secular year of 2016 with an act of Tzedakah. Arnie Sklar Building Committee Vice-President
