It aims to provide students with the key skills and knowledge which will enable them to go on and study towards qualifications as barristers or solicitors, should they choose to do so.

LLB (Hons) Law and Criminology This combination gives students the opportunity to study for a law degree while developing a deeper understanding about the causes and consequences of crime. The LLB (Hons) Law and Criminology degree is concerned with the rules by which society is organised, how they can be changed and what happens when they are broken.

“It is my great pleasure to welcome you to Lincoln Law School. Our dynamic School is home to a vibrant academic community that combines high-quality teaching with outstanding research.

Law has a long and illustrious heritage in Lincoln, from the city’s possession of one of only four original copies of Magna Carta, to the work of its law courts today.

Our philosophy is that students work best when they are happy and relaxed so we foster an informal learning environment that helps to

build your confidence in a friendly, yet professional, atmosphere.

Lincoln Law School assists students to develop a detailed understanding of the rules and institutions that govern our society, as well as the ability to place the law within its social, political and commercial context, both nationally and internationally.

I hope you enjoy reading about what we do and what we offer and I look forward to meeting you at future open days and other events we host.”

Professor Duncan French Head of School

Welcome to Lincoln Law School Added Value

Mooting A moot is a mock appeal usually set in the Court of Appeal or Supreme Court. At Lincoln, our students are able to practise their skills in our purpose-built Moot Court.

Working in teams, students are given a scenario containing two grounds of appeal. They then research the law relating to those areas, construct arguments for their client and argue them as counsel in a court setting.

The Law ClinicLincoln Law School’s Law Clinic provides free legal advice to both staff and students of the university, and wider afield.

Through the Clinic’s dedicated facilities, law students are able to apply their legal knowledge to real-life situations and gain practical experience. They manage each case by conducting client interviews, discussing the situation with staff, carrying out research and preparing a letter of advice to be issued to the client.

Street Law Street Law is an initiative at Lincoln where undergraduate students work with local schools and colleges to identify legal topics that are of particular relevance to the pupils. Under this innovative teaching and learning scheme students, supported by their tutors, are given opportunities to improve their communication, research and clinical legal skills.

EmployabilitySupporting our students into employment is a key part of what Lincoln Law School does. As well as providing academic training and the other opportunities mentioned, the School works closely with local employers and has created a range of initiatives, including employer mentoring, to support students to consider their further career possibilities.

Research

Throughout their time at university, students learn from experts directly involved in legal research and professional development. Ranging from international law to criminal justice, from the legality of drones to animal welfare standards, it has an impressively wide scope.

Professor Duncan French, Head of Lincoln Law School, has recently been involved in a UN project strengthening national laws combatting environmental crime.

Professor Matthew Hall is an internationally-recognised expert in victims’ rights, and acts in an advisory and consultancy capacity with police forces, Environment Agency, and the European Union.

Dr Christy Shucksmith leads the School’s Conflict and Disaster Law Research Group. This is a socio-legal and interdisciplinary group led by academics with a passion for researching conflict and disaster situations. Christy’s recent work led to her book, ‘The International Committee of the Red Cross and its Mandate to Protect and Assist: Law and Practice’.

Dr Ngozi Okoye’s research focuses on corporate governance, and she has recently been researching into the importance of micro-finance in supporting development in western Africa.

Ben Hudson focuses on the complex legal issues of internally displaced persons often arising from conflict and civil war.

In addition, the School also frequently attracts leading scholars from all over the world to give presentations, collaborate on projects and spend time in Lincoln as visiting Professors.

Lincoln Centre for Environmental Law and Justice Lincoln Law School is the home of the Lincoln Centre for Environmental Law and Justice. The mission of the centre is to promote, foster and undertake multidisciplinary scholarship, research, consultancy and postgraduate study in environmental law and justice.

Study Abroad

Lincoln Law School is an internationally inclusive community of students and staff. Each year we welcome students from across the world.

As part of this community, students have the opportunity to study abroad. The study abroad option takes place for one full academic year between levels 2 and 3 of their studies. Students who take this option then return to Lincoln to complete level 3 of their law degree, graduating with an ‘LLB with Study Abroad’, increasing the programme from 3 to 4 years.

The following destinations are presently available through the scheme:

• University of Bergen, Norway

• University of Warsaw, Poland

• Radboud University, Nijmegen, Netherlands

• Rikkyo University, Tokyo

Lincoln Law School also partners with North-West University, South Africa, and is developing further partnerships.

“One of the most enjoyable elements of my course at Lincoln Law School was working within the Lincoln Law clinic. It enabled me to gain valuable practical legal experience, which has helped me to secure a job within a law firm after graduation.”

Emily Taylor LLB Law Alumni

“On the course there were students from academic and professional backgrounds, which brought a diverse element to the group discussions. I particularly enjoyed the International Criminal Justice module and I am writing my dissertation in that area.”

Sophie Worley LLM International Law student
