Scuba Scuba DooThis Week’s Feature Story
Flying its flag proudlyunder the KATS (KidsAnd The Sea) Program,KATS Scuba BVI arelaunching into its newseason which intro-duces scuba diving toteenagers and youngadults aged between12 and 18 years old. To
get the ball rolling, there is a One Day Introductory
course, “Discover Scuba Diving Day” from 10am till
12:30pm this Saturday at Long Bay, Beef Island. The short course will consist of an “Introduction”
by the dive instructors followed by familiarization ofthe equipment. Then it’s the fun part, where the groupgets into the water for the first time, initially in theshallows where it is easy to stand. From there it’s allabout practicing clearing masks and just getting usedto being and breathing under the water. Those whoare comfortable at this level, can swim out further(with the instructors) where there are lots of fish tosee and the fun of the sport can really start sinking in.
KATS Scuba BVI is organized and run by Marc
Downing, who has been involved since his predeces-sor, Derrylyn Churchwell left island a couple of yearsago. The program was first organized and run by theBVI Dive Operators Association in 1994, however, it isto Derrylyn who was involved from the outset thatMarc gives the credit. He said, “Derrylyn helped laythe foundations to attract local youth into the sport.”She also helped find graduates jobs in the divingindustry which is so intrinsic to our island way of life.
Marc also explained that, “Although the One DayIntroductory course is an enjoyable “taster,” it is nec-essary to take this course before embarking on theFull Certification Course. At the end of the course onSaturday, the dive instructors will advise those stu-dents who have shown the ability to progress further.”The full course will start later in the year.
The fees for the One Day Introductory Course are$15 and $200 for the PADI Full Certification Course.KATS Scuba BVI works very closely with the Rotaryand Roteract Clubs who are generously providingsome sponsorship for students who cannot raise thefees. There is no pre-registration necessary forSaturday’s course. For more information, call Marc on346-1137 or check out the KATS Scuba BVI facebookpage for videos and information.

Dear Koren,
I am a 19-year old young lady who lives with my par-
ents but every time I ask for money to do something
important no help comes so I turn to my boyfriend for
almost everything I need. I have been with him for 2
months now although we have known each other since
childhood. We are happy and everything is going good
and he has told me to come and live with him since I am
stressed at home all the time, but my parents act so
funny that I am scared and sometimes I think of running
away. Please help me decide what I should do.
–– Confused
Dear Confused,
The expectation for some parents is that if you
are 19 years old you could get a job to pay for at least
some of your needs. You are living rent free and that is
more than many parents allow. So while you might
find them unsympathetic, look at what they are doing,
and try to be a bit more grateful. Maybe if they see you
making some effort to seek employment, they would
be more inclined to help you.
Why are you being stressed? Listen to your par-
ent’s complaints – maybe there is some validity to
them. If you feel like you are being treated unfairly,
Stressed and Confusedtalk with them and try to
improve the relationship.
You don’t need to run
away from home – that’s
juvenile thinking. At 19,
you are a woman and if
you want to leave, you
must ensure that you are
capable of supporting yourself. Living independently
means paying rent, utilities, buying food and all that.
Even if this young man says you could live with him, it
is too soon and also dangerous to be at someone’s
mercy financially and otherwise. All seems well now
but when you move in with him, you might see a dif-
ferent side of him when he realizes he has to take care
of you completely. So have a plan B; if things don’t
work out, you are not stuck in a bad situation.
Find some simple ways to handle your stress –
it’s not good for you. Sit and think about what you
want in your life and have some goals and plans of
your own. Having a life where you are working
towards your dream makes you happier than just
being there mooching off parents or a two-month old
relationship – that will eat away at your self-worth and
you can do better.

– Jane Bakewell
It’s the 1960’s in racially segregated Jackson
Mississippi (think Jim Crow Laws, Martin Luther
King, and Rosa Parks) and Skeeter (Emma Stone) a
recent graduate of Ole’ Miss with an interest in jour-
nalism is back in town for the La-dee-dah days of
summer that include bridge clubs, ice tea and girly
gossip. Somehow she isn’t fitting back in with her
best friend Hilly’s new agenda for separate toilets in
white homes with maids, to make sure “the help”
stay in their rightful place.
Confused as to why her mother let go of
Constantine (Cicely Tyson) her beloved maid that
had been with the family for 29 years, Skeeter
decides it’s time to get “the help’s” point of view.
She pitches her unorthodox idea to the female edi-
tor of Harper and Row and surprisingly an offer is
made to look at her interviews of domestic maids, if
she gets at least a dozen to talk to her about their
experiences.
This is a risky business for Skeeter, who knows
the laws segregating contact between whites and
blacks, but even more so for the maids, she asks to
help her, who risk loss of jobs, imprisonment and or
beatings. But Abileen, the nanny of her friend
Elizabeth’s little girl (powerfully played by Viola
Davis) agrees to speak to her in clandestine meet-
ings and gets her out-spoken best friend Minny
(Octavia Spencer in another great performance) to
also spill the beans about the dark side of white
employment. Others join in (all taking made up
names) with tales of tender relationships formed,
doomed from inception by the lines of color.
Based on the best selling novel by Kathryn
Stockett, The Help is directed by Tate Taylor (a close
friend of Stockett’s and a fellow southerner), who
takes this intimate portrayal of the sometimes
deeply close but also fractious relationship
between the races and makes an unforgettable
movie with the humor, outrage and contradiction
that comprised the way of life in the south at that
time. An excellent film that will draw you to the book
(if you haven’t read it already) be prepared to laugh
and weep all in the course of one movie.

Boulder-DashSo it was with great excitement that my friend
and I drove into Road Town to catch our ferry for our
well-earned break to Virgin Gorda over the Festival
week. With tickets in hand and the ferry still some 30
minutes from leaving we decided to have a sit down
across the road and have a small glass of wine
because, well, we might not be going very far, but we
were going on holiday.
We arrived in VG and everything was perfect, the
rental car was there and after a short debate about
which car to take, we were off. Next stop – find the
villa. Now I have to say, to be fair that neither of us has
spent much time on Virgin Gorda itself, we have both
sailed along its north shore many times – but never
really driven there.
Anyhow, we had a map, and good directions to
our villa, so off we went! We drove towards Leverick
Bay, with lots of positive reinforcement going on, like
“oh yes, here’s where the road forks, so we keep to
the left, and now here is the historical building sign on
the left, so this is us!” It was as easy as that – so we
checked in, unpacked and
headed for town as we
were now more than ready
for some dinner and enter-
tainment. After a great
meal, a few cocktails and
some dancing, we headed
home.
The next day we woke
to a cloudless sky and
decided to head off early
and explore the island,
which we did and after a spectacular brunch followed
by swimming – we dozed off for an hour or so, to make
sure we would have lots of energy later as we had a
plan to see Leon and the Hot Shots. It was my first
fungi experience and I was determined not to miss it –
so before long, there we were shooting the breeze
with the other patrons of the bar and having a fine
time. After a while, I felt like heading home, but my
friend was still enjoying the music and decided to stay
and catch a taxi later; making sure she had a taxi driv-
er identified – I headed home.
The next morning, we were sitting having coffee
when I asked my friend how the rest of her night went.
A little sheepishly she explained that although she
thought she knew the way home, when it came to giv-
ing directions to the taxi driver it was a different mat-
ter and the only information that she could give him
was that there were two boulders marking the
entrance to our villa! Being on VG where boulders are
not exactly rare, these were very vague directions
indeed. After about an hour driving round with an
increasingly irate taxi
driver she finally recog-
nized our villa and was
relieved beyond belief.
The next day, I couldn’t
help but rub it in a bit
when we drove out of our
driveway and I pointed
the big yellow historical
sign that clearly showed
the driveway to our villa –
with its name on it!

The Pack Is Back To Open The 2011 NFL SeasonNFL offseason summary: The rich
(Philadelphia Eagles, New England Patriots) got
richer, the poor (Cincinnati Bengals) got poorer,
and oh, by the way, everyone made a pile of cash.
That’s the way it often goes with sports work
stoppages.
The lockout just an unpleasant memory at this
point, the 2011 NFL season gets under way
Thursday, Sept. 8, on NBC, when Aaron Rodgers
and the Green Bay Packers open defense of their
XLV Super Bowl title at home against the previous
season’s champions, Drew Brees and the New
Orleans Saints.
The Packers bring back basically the same
team that rang up a 31-25 upset victory over the
Pittsburgh Steelers in February’s championship
game, including All-Pros in defensive back Charles
Woodson, linebacker Clay Matthews and safety
Nick Collins, as well as 14 players who were injured
at various points last year. The team went into the
offseason with almost no needs, lost no key play-
ers to free agency and drafted for depth. And per-
haps most importantly in a year following an
abbreviated training camp, according to ESPN’s
Tom Jackson, they’ll have a continuity in coaching
and philosophy that many teams that underwent
significant change won’t.
“One of the things I’ve been saying during the
entire lockout,” says Jackson, who this year marks
his 25th year working with Chris Berman on
Sunday NFL Countdown, “has been that the new
champion that we crown in February of 2012, I
believe is going to be an old champion.
“It’s going to be someone, because of all the
missed time, changes in defensive and offensive
coordinators, changes in head coaches – I think all
of those teams suffered drastically from the lock-
out. So when you get these teams that have the
same (offensive) coordinator, have the same head
coach and the same defensive coordinator system
in place, the quarterback understands what the
system is – I think all of those teams have even
more of an advantage than they would normally.
“And I’m always reminded that the last eight
years, the same three teams (Steelers, Patriots,
Indianapolis Colts) have represented the AFC (in
the Super Bowl), so I don’t know where the parity
is, but it hasn’t reached the top of the AFC yet.”– George Dickie

Catching Up On The Track WorldBy Dean “The Sportsman” GreenawayBy Dean “The Sportsman” Greenaway
DAEGU, South Korea—When Jamaica’s sprint sen-sation Usain Bolt false started in the 100m finals duringSunday’s 13th IAAF World Championships in Deagu, theglobe stopped in momentary shock.
In the stadium, I had my lens pointed to get the fin-ish and you could have heard a pin drop. Shocked, dis-appointment, disbelief were some of the adjectivesheard. Those who didn’t know of the no false start rulethat came into effect on Jan 1, 2010, suddenly knew allabout it and had an opinion.
But rules are rules. Sprinters in particular—whenthey were allowed three false starts each, then oneeach—use it as a strategy to get an edge. False startsadd time to the event and is not good for televisionwhich pumps hefty sums into the championships.
I’ve been fortunate to have been at three differenteditions of these IAAF World Championships in threedifferent capacities—the first being the inaugural onein Helsinki, in 1983 as an athlete. In 2009 as in this year,my role was as BVI Athletics Association president. After the politics was over this time—including an 11-hour Congress were voting for the leaders went awrywith electronic voting machines malfunctioning andofficials had to rely on hand casting and countingvotes—I picked up a dual role. Donning my first IAAFphoto pool jacket, allowed me to get within a whisker ofthe action.
The championships have dramatically changedsince 1983. They’re now held every two years instead offour; qualifying standards are tougher, drug testing hasbecome a central focus to catch cheaters——and yes,the no false start rule, among others. Oh yeah, a dis-abled athlete ran the 400m—a story by itself.
Athletes making the final eight, they are assured ofcollecting a minimum of $4,000 in prize money, with
$60,000 going to the winner. Breaking a world recordgives that athlete another $100,000 to bank.
Several defending champions have been knockedoff their pedestal and favorites to win have flopped. Some big names did not suit up either. My biggest thrill, was when Grenada’s Kirani James collared the USA’sLaShawn Merritt in Tuesday night’s 400m—the sameevent I ran.
Here was the kid from a country with less than150,000 inhabitants, knocking off the mighty U S of A’stop dog. James—who once competed in the BVI—wasjoined by fellow Grenadian Rondell Bartholomew in thefinal. James became the ninth athlete in history to havewon World Youth, World Junior and World Seniortitles—a remarkable feat—and most of all, he’s HUM-BLE and RESPECTFUL.
Before the event ends on Sunday, there will be lotsmore surprises. My chance to cover the action as a pho-tographer was an unbelievable experience. The evi-dence of my work can be seen on facebook on the BVIAthletics Association page. Log on and drop your feed-back.www.facebook.com/pages/BVI-Athletics-Association-BVIAA/185609174793580
