Camping at Home

I’ve never been much of a camper. One ofthe few times I’ve been persuaded to go camp-ing with my family, I insisted that we take amattress along in the rental car’s trunk andthat the campground had showers and a can-teen. Nonetheless, it was a genuine deepwoods experience with a campfire and a parkranger giving a talk under the stars. I saw ablack bear and deer, and hiked multiple trailsthrough the blissful scenery of Virginia’sShenandoah Valley. In all, it was wonderful, even if I did miss the comforts of home.

So when we decided to clean out andreseal our cistern last week, the thought ofbeing without water for a week was, “OK, I’vegone camping, how hard can it be?” We gath-ered dozens of plastic bins and other recepta-cles for storing water and the problem of howto take a warm shower was solved when afriend suggested buying a solar boat shower. Igot mine from a local chandlery, a five gallonblack plastic bag with a short hose and nozzleattached, along with a handle for hanging it onto the mast – or in my case a hook in the bath-room shower.

It turned out that “D-Day” fell on mybirthday, not the merriest way to start my nextyear of life. So I conveniently arranged to cele-

brate the day with a shopping trip on St. Johnwith friends, while my husband stayed backand did the dirty work with some able bodiedhelpers. I started the morning by filling mylarge collection of plastic containers withwater, because when I got back home, much ofmodern life as I knew it – automatic flushingtoilets, free flowing showers and my dish-washer – would be things of the past.

It would be camping alright, but at least Iwould be able to sleep in my own bed andcook on my own stove. Or, so I thought. As itturned out the gas bottle connection hadsprung a leak – and there was no cooking gasthat evening. The choice was a campfire in thebackyard, or eating out . . . . and as tempting asit was to cook hotdogs over an open flame, Inaturally chose eating out. Next time I’ll leavecamping to the girlscouts.

The Fighter

Boxing films are a great venue for “under dog” stories, asmany saw in the film Rocky. Who hasn’t imitated SylvesterStallone and run up stairs humming a victory song? In directorDavid O. Russell’s take on a true life boxing hero from the bluecollar streets of Lowell, Mass, we see a more convoluted storyin Micky Ward (Marc Wahlberg). That is because althoughMickey turns out to be the boxing legend, his half-brotherDicky (Oscar performance by Christian Bale) seems to hog thespotlight due to his attention grabbing personality fueled inpart by a history of drug use.

The film opens with an HBO crew following Dicky aroundfor a documentary he thinks is about his comeback to the box-ing world. He still milks his one time claim to fame with a con-tested knock down of Sugar Ray Leonard. The filmmakers havemade it clear the focus is really about drug addiction butNicky’s delusions keep him in a fog. Problems for both brothers stem from their highly dysfunc-tional family, who appear like flies stuck in a web spun by Alice (Melissa Leo –the film’s secondOscar performance), the controlling matriarch of the seven sisters and two bread-winning fighters. The chain-smoking mother wields power because she manages their boxing careers with a tight fist.

All of this changes when Dicky heads to the “slammer” caught for drug use and Micky gets setup as a welter weight fighting in a match with a guy 20 pounds heavier and gets pummeled. Micky’snew tough talking girlfriend Charlene (Amy Adams) takes the reigns from mom and all “hell breaksloose.” Less of a hero story, this is the backdrop for great performances by two gritty actors.

Dear Koren,I am a 45 year old man and everyone made me

believe that if I stopped using alcohol, life would be somuch better. I am feeling very miserable and have badcravings. Before I would stay out on weekends withthe boys, but now I am home and my wife is com-plaining that I am grumpy. I haven’t seen one bene-fit to stopping. Now I’m starting to think this is justmy wife’s attempt to control me and not for my owngood as she used to say. –Tricked

Dear Tricked,I don’t think you were tricked at all. I think

that if someone truly loves you, they willencourage you to make healthy choices. Also, when we make a life-changing decision, all ofthe benefits are not seen or felt immediately, butjust knowing that you did the right thing, should give you a sense of satisfaction.

The excessive use of anything is unhealthyand many studies have shown that alcoholcauses liver damage, affects your pancreas, increases your risk of cancer and stroke andaffects your brain, causing impaired judgmentand reasoning and aggressive behavior in somepersons.

If you have kids, how do you think theyfeel to see Daddy coming home intoxicated, shouting at them unnecessarily or being meanto mom because he is drunk?

You have made the right decision, eventhough it does not feel that way right now. Findother interesting things to do with that week-end drinking time to avoid boredom – do fam-ily activities, play or watch sports, take yourwife out for a drive, join a club, something.

Go to a doctor and get a complete physical

and let the doctorknow that youhave recently madea lifestyle changeand perhaps he canrecommend somevitamins or something to help you to feel better. You might also want to consider joining a sup-port group like AA where there are others whounderstand what you are going through, havebeen there before and will be able to offerempathetic support.

I think you should thank your wife for herencouragement and putting up with yourmood swings and complaining. Your familyneeds you alive and healthy, not just for now,but for always.

By Dean “The Sportsman” Greenaway

Around $3 million was dumped into theBVI economy last week during the 40thAnniversary BVI Spring Regatta and SailingFestival, which attracted 122 entries fromaround the globe, where Racing A Class waswon by Dutchman Willem Wester.

Sunday’s first race from Nanny Cay andlooping around Salt Island was the only racethe Dutchmen lost on their inaugural VirginIslands tour, which began with perfection dur-ing St. Thomas’ Rolex Regatta, then continuedwith last Tuesday’s Bitter End Cup followed bythe Nanny Cay Cup on Thursday, before seal-ing the BVI Spring Regatta crown.

For three days, I had the privilege of sail-ing with Regatta Chairman Bob Phillips aroundthe various courses, taking photos and doinglive reports for ZROD 103.7 FM.

“Tell me what you want and I’ll do it,” Bobsaid to those of us from the media including afilm crew. “Just let me know.” I’d sailed withBob before and knew what to expect—an upclose, personal and intimate encounter with theaction. Bob’s extensive knowledge of the cours-es, boats, and positioning to get great photos isunparalleled in the 15 years that I’ve coveredthe colorful spectacle on the water.

He, however, brings a unique backgroundto the event as an international race officer—anadvantage only a few have when they are alsothe Chairman. Bob took up the task when PeterHaycraft who had been on the helm for 25 yearsrelinquished the post. Co-incidentally, this wasalso Haycraft’s 40th time racing in the regattathat began with 25 boats.

Haycraft said Bob had been on the commit-tee more than five years before he gave up the

post and knew Bob was the perfect man for thejob. “He has given it the expertise that I could-n’t give it and the professionalism,” Haycraftnoted. “Maybe I could have done it, but not inthe same way as Bob, and not as successfully-that is the main difference.”

Bob is a statistical data bank. He knowsevery boat, class and captain or owner andnewbie. Media personnel profited from hisextensive experience as he rattled off statisticafter statistic with a passion.

He described the 40-year old event asevolving. On Sunday for example, the sailorsthought they had sailed too far to get to CooperIsland and asked organizers if they could dosomething different. As they are always lookingfor ways to improve the sailor friendly event, they made the accommodation and the boatswere started just off Nanny Cay.

“I have the cell phone numbers for the topsailors out there, talking to them frequently,‘hey guys, what can we do to make this a betterevent,’” he stated. “Peter Holmberg comes upto me every night and says ‘Bob, this was great, that was great, geez, can we work on this or canwe change this or that’ and starting the bigboats off Nanny Cay on Sunday morning wasthe result. We know what competitors wantand we’re very quick to react to it.”
