friends, home décor and household items.

Special on- the-night raffle tickets will also be

available for another chance to win!

All proceeds from the night will go towards the

new animal shelter. The current shelter opened in

1975 and has existed for 37 years solely on donations

and fundraisers. Besides taking in unwanted animals

and giving them necessary care while trying to find

good homes, the shelter also provides boarding and

grooming services for pet owners.

So don’t miss out! Come out and have a great

night for a great cause. The action goes on until the

wee hours and we promise you this is truly a night to

remember! For more information, call 494-2284.

The dice will roll at Peg Leg’s Landing at Nanny

Cay this Saturday when the beachfront restaurant

transforms into a bustling casino hall for the Humane

Society’s eagerly awaited annual Gaming Night.

This is your chance to put on your glitziest gear

and have fun playing the tables. Grab a seat around

one of the popular blackjack tables or have some

competitive fun playing poker. The roulette wheel will

test your luck, and of course, a firm favorite is betting

and cheering on the hilarious crab races! Who knows

you may even win the “Best-Dressed prize!”

A favorite of BVI residents, Gaming Night gives

event-goers an opportunity for some high-rolling fun.

Doors open at 7pm and entry (for adults 18 and over

only) is $25, which includes $10 in free chips to get

your night of gambling action off to a good start! Get

there early and enjoy a delicious buffet dinner beach-

side and to grab a spot at the hottest tables!

At the end of the night, cash in your winning chips

Tinker Bell: The Secret of the WingsAfter another season of creating snowflake bas-

kets for the snowy owls to take across the border tothe Winter Woods, Tinker Bell's (Mae Whitman)curiosity grows about the fairies that live there. Oneday Tink temporarily crosses the border into the for-bidden land and realizes her wings are sparkling.Determined to figure out why her wings reacted thatway, she checks out a book in the fairy library only tobe told the author lives in the Winter Woods. Tinksneaks back over to find the author, the Keeper,Dewey (Jeff Bennett) but finds Periwinkle (Lucy Hale)instead, whose wings also have begun to sparkle. Asit turns out, Tink and Peri are fairy sisters, "born of thesame laugh." But the rules passed down from thefairy leaders insist they remain apart in their ownlands, a law both sisters intend to defy at all costs.

The next day, Tinker Bell arrives at the border withBobble and Clank, pulling along a snow-maker. Nowable to keep Periwinkle cold enough, Peri's crossesthe border to the 'warm' side of Pixie Hollow. Shemeets Tinker Bell's friends and continues her tour ofthe warm side of Pixie Hollow. She then frosts a flowerthat Tink and her friends gave to her as a gift, hopingto keep it forever, until Tink noticed Periwinkle'swings wilting. The snow-maker was running out of ice,and there wasn't enough snow to keep Peri cold, soTink and Periwinkle return to the border. Lord Milori(Timothy Dalton), appears and instructs Periwinkle

how to fix her wings.Queen Clarion (AnjelicaHuston), arrives too, andexplains to the girls thatthey can never see eachother again. As the girls gotheir separate ways, thesnow-maker gets knocked into the stream, and cre-ates a snowstorm.

Later that day, Queen Clarion tried to make TinkerBell understand why the rule about not crossing theborder was so important, and so did Lord Milori withPeriwinkle. They tell the story of two fairies who felldeeply in love, but were from the different worlds. Oneof the fairies crossed the border and broke a wing; aninjury for which there was no cure. Just as the Queenfinishes her side of the tale, it begins to snow, causinga commotion. The seasons become thrown out of bal-ance, and the life of the Pixie Dust Tree comes intoquestion; if it becomes too cold, it will freeze and stopproducing Pixie Dust.

Tinker Bell flies straight to the Winter Woods, andasks Periwinkle why the flower was still alive. Glissexplains that frost tucks warm air inside, andPeriwinkle suggests that they could frost the PixieDust Tree before the cold comes. As they race to savethe Pixie Dust Tree and save Pxie Hallow, Tink andPeriwinkle realize the Secret of the Wings.

The Leadership Challenge

Send your questions confidentially [email protected] or via twitter at @korennorton

The Mitt Romney –

Barak Obama battle

for leadership of one

of the most powerful

countries of the world,

got me thinking about

the nuances of the

leadership challenge.

While the discussion

of good leadership is a

topic that could fill a

ten volume book

series, we could at least consider some of the more

salient points briefly. First off, some people are born

with natural leadership tendencies, but good leaders

can be made by reading relevant material, learning

techniques, practicing behaviors and enhancing the

qualities they already possess and acquiring new

ones.

A good leader has integrity and leads by example.

This leader expects the best from his or her team

because he or she recognizes that everyone has some

potential and as a leader one must recognize effort

and outcomes and in some cases, reward it. A good

leader educates their team members, communicates

a vision so there is purpose and cohesion in their

efforts, and also encourages, supports and stimu-

lates their team.

Here are some important points to remember

about leadership.

1. Power should not be abused. If you are in a posi-tion of authority, you should not punish someone just

because they disagree with you or because you feel

like it.

2. A leader’s strength is seen in times of crisis. Whendifficult times come, it is often a test of character. How

many leaders are re-elected based on how they acted

after a disaster or in a crisis.

3. Have a sense of time and place. There is a time foreverything. A true leader knows when to push and

when to pull back; he or she knows what can be said

publicly, in a group or during individual encounters.

4. Know your team members. Everyone has differentstrengths. Knowing your team members could help

you as a leader to manage your expectations and

resist the urge to compare.

5. Consistency. A true leader must be consistent andreliable. If you change the rules day by day, it confus-

es team members and they lose faith in you as a

leader.

The leadership challenge is not an easy one.

Sometimes folks set out to undermine your efforts,

challenge your authority and create dissention among

the team. When this happens, the leader cannot

ignore it, but must acknowledge what is happening

and seek to resolve the issues before they get out of

control.

For those in leadership positions and for the aspir-

ing leaders among us, the work is not easy, but it is

worth it. Make an assessment of the kind of leader

you are and your leadership styles. Watch the way in

which you communicate and the kinds of boundaries

you set. Emulate other good leaders if you must, but

in time you must develop your own unique style and

be prepared to make a positive difference in the lives

of those whom you influence.

Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!

Finding Josiah’s Bay

I recently moved to Tortola. At first I was a little

concerned about the change. But being born in Puerto

Rico with Dominican parents has helped me over-

come this anxiety quickly. But, even though these

Caribbean islands are similar there are also some fun-

damental differences between them. One noticeable

difference is that in Tortola we can appreciate nature

more intensely. The green of the mountains seems

greener, the blue of the water is very intense and

everywhere.

My first month here consisted of doing paper

work, finding a place to live and learning how to get

around. Fortunately, citizens in Tortola are awesome

and enjoy helping people like me move around. Still, I

wanted to start exploring the island on my own.

Deciding where to go first has not been easy since

everyone has passionately recommended different

preferred spots. Luckily, a recently made friend loaned

me her car so that I could go see the island. I took off

on a Sunday afternoon with out any maps or idea of

where I would be heading.

I left from Cane Garden Bay driving up the hill,

where I got a quick glance of the bay and the beauti-

ful horizon behind me. Driving was a lot of fun,

between the almost rally racing feeling of the road and

the awe-inspiring scenery it was a real treat. I decided

pretty early on to avoid Road Town, not because I

don’t like it but because I’ve seen it and I was on a

quest to see something different. Then I saw a sign

that read Josiah’s Bay, the name sounded familiar but

I couldn’t remember if they told me to avoid it or not

to miss it. I decided to make the trip more interesting

by making the outcome a metaphor of my life. As I

continued driving through the dirt road I grew more

nervous and started thinking about what lay ahead

and hoping not to make it the last time anybody trust-

ed me with their car. All of a sudden a pack of goats

jumped onto the side of the road, running almost in

front of the car and beside me. That’s when I decided

to learn from the wild goats to jump to the adventure

and run with it.

Finally, the dirt road ended in a parking area where

there were some cars. I parked the truck and followed

the sand, walking towards the sound of the ocean.

Then, something magical happened… I saw Josiah’s

Bay. It reminded me of the image I have in my mind

whenever I hear people talking about paradise. It was

stunning! Then I noticed some people in the water

with their surfboards, waiting, then a slow but perfect-

ly shaped, prime quality set of waves started hitting

the shore. A guy gracefully rode his long board

smoothly like riding on baby oil. I thought to myself, I

have just found God’s private playground, then imme-

diately I concluded that if this is how my life turns out

then I guess I’ll be all right.

Jennifer Hudson wasn’t even planning to attend

last February’s Grammy Awards.

Instead, she stopped the show with a tribute both

sad and celebratory. Those attending were shocked

by the death of music icon Whitney Houston the night

before, and Grammy winner Hudson was summoned

at virtually the last minute for what was a stunning

rendition of the Houston-recorded, Dolly Parton-writ-

ten classic I Will Always Love You.The American Idol alum honors Houston again in

the new CBS special We Will Always Love You: AGrammy Salute to Whitney Houston airing on Friday,Nov. 16. Taped in mid-October at Los Angeles’ Nokia

Theatre L.A. Live, the program also stars Celine Dion,

Usher, Yolanda Adams and CeCe Winans. Plentiful

clips of Houston herself are included, in Grammy

appearances and also at Super Bowl XXV, where her

rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner an becameimmediately classic.

“I did some of her up-tempo numbers,” Hudson

reports of her part in the show. “I did I Wanna DanceWith Somebody, How Will I Know and I’m EveryWoman. Those songs have this energy that lifts every-one up; as soon as the music kicks in, you’re just

happy and celebrating. Anytime I’m having a ‘Whitney

moment,’ those songs lift my spirits.

“That’s what I wanted to do, to lift up her memory

and celebrate instead of mourn. Let’s turn a negative

into a positive and revisit the legacy she left us

through her music. Just thinking about it makes me

smile. She had such a beautiful energy, and she was

always vibrant and excited. You can still feel that

through her music to this day.”

Hudson Honors Houston in new CBS tribute

By Jay Bobbin

Hudson remembers

the moment she was

asked to help memorialize

Houston at the Grammys.

“It flipped the whole week

inside out,” she recalls.

“This was the first Grammys I was not going to attend

or perform at (since becoming a music star herself),

and I was excited to sit on my couch in my hotel and

watch the Grammys from there.

“The day she passed was the pre-Grammy party,

and I was going to that ... and I was in the middle of

getting ready for it when we got the call about what

had happened. It’s something that just knocks you off

your feet, so much to take in, and I’ve seen a lot. She’s

one of my greatest inspirations, so it was a huge loss

for me. Now, every time I go to L.A., she’s the first thing

that comes to mind.”

Being asked to sing I Will Always Love You thatGrammy night placed a colossal responsibility on

Hudson. “It definitely was overwhelming,“ she

admits. “There’s only one Whitney Houston, but to be

able to honor her, it only could come from the heart.

“I didn’t know if I’d be able to get through it, but I

would do anything for Whitney. I felt like we all should

be singing it, because there was not one person in

that room she didn’t touch. She gave her life to this

industry, and that always should be remembered.”

Featured in the upcoming Season 2 of NBC’s

Smash, Hudson — who owns an Oscar for the 2006screen version of Dreamgirls — was intent on seeingHouston’s final film performance in the remake of

Sparkle, which debuts on home video Nov. 30.

By Dean “The Sportsman” Greenaway

Virgin Gorda’s Sugar Boys – fresh off winning the

Wendol “Poto” Williams Knockout Cup – have posi-

tioned themselves for yet another title before the

2012-2013 BVI Football Association league begins,

this time seeking to add the Terry Evans Memorial Cup

to its trophy case.

The Terry Evans Cup is in honor of the former BVI

Football Association President who headed the

organization from 1986-1991, including winning the

1986 Leeward Islands Football Association

Tournament. Evans, one of the first local players in the

sport, began his career in 1969 and suited up for such

teams as the Bronze, Police, Cable & Wireless, Queen

City Strikers, Jamrocks and his own squad, Ball Stars.

The inaugural tournament was held in 2010, with

the Islanders beating the Wolues, 3-2 for the title.

The 2012 edition’s final is set for Sunday at 7 pm.

at the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds. The winner of

Wednesday night’s game featuring Islanders vs Old

Madrid will advance to face Sugar Boys in the final.

Islanders surely would like to get another crack at the

Sugar Boys, after they were whipped, 5-0, in the

Wendol “Poto” Williams Cup final.

The Sugar Boys scored two first

half goals – one by Derol Redhead on

a perfectly timed header in the 10th,

the other by dependent striker Jairo

Morris in the 35th – en route to beat-

ing Ball Stars, 2-0, for their finals

berth.

Whoever comes forth in Sunday’s

final to meet the Sugar Boys, will be

trying to prevent them from joining

Ball Stars, in lifting both the Terry Evans and Wendol

“Poto” Williams’ Cups in the same season. Ball Stars

pulled off the trick in 2011. Will the Sugar Boys follow

suit?

The fact that the BVI Football Association hosts

two events recognizing past contributors to the

organization is commendable. It’s always good to see

sporting organizations reflecting on their history and

highlighting persons who have made contributions to

the development of their respective sports.

Unfortunately, we haven’t been too good at

recording our history – and sports is no exception. As

a result, often times, major milestones go unrecog-

nized and younger ones coming up are unaware of

contributions others have made, or even noteworthy

accomplishments.

We’ve had a rich sporting history over the years

with many important developments to the point of

where we are today. However, these developments

haven’t been recorded and there are only a few we

can rely on for recall.

I can still remember Terry Evans – competing in

track and field in the early 1970s,

playing football and also seeing him

watching a game in late 2009 –

before he passed away.

With the abundance of available

technology, perhaps this is as good

time as any in our various sporting

organizations, to capture images of

players and administrators for future

generations to hold, as part of our-

sporting legacy. Sugar Boys and Ball Stars players tangle
