Fishing Frenzy This Week’s Feature Story
This annual event, now in its 23rd year is a cele-
bration to recognize the Territory’s fishermen and
aims to highlight the importance of the fishing indus-
try in the BVI. It is also a great fun day out for all the
family as the community is invited to come together
to enjoy the competitions and the beach activities on
offer. Always held on Territory Day, this year the event
falls on July 2nd and will take place at Long Bay
Beach, Beef Island. The tournament will start early at
4am with the official catch weigh-in scheduled to
begin at 5pm.
There will be three tournament categories this
year. The first is trolling where the fishermen are after
the big fish that don’t feed on the reef such as king
fish, tuna, mahi-mahi and wahoo. The second is reef
fishing where fish such as snap-
pers, groupers and yellow tails
will be caught and the third and
new category at this year’s tour-
nament is the lionfish competi-
tion. Once caught, there will be a
demonstration on how to safely
fillet the lionfish, presumably to
get them ready for the BBQ!
Sam Davies of the Conservation and Fisheries
Department explained that, “This is a day when fish-
erfolks get together and invite communities along to
recognize the importance of their hard work and to
appreciate the high quality of sea food and good fish-
ing practices that keep this important industry alive
and safe.”
Following the weigh-in there will be a prize-giving
ceremony where trophies and prizes are awarded to
the winners of all the categories.”
Also featured at the tournament is a lifeguard
demonstration, lots of food and drinks and various
beach games such as tug-of-war, soldier crab races
and domino games. Entertainment from DJs Bertrum,
Wiz and Commodore will keep the party atmosphere
alive. So head down to Long
Bay on Territory Day and sup-
port this fun and important tra-
ditional event.

Ask Koren
Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!Money Borrowed
Send your questions to [email protected] and aresponse will be provided
Dear Koren,
A friend borrowed some money from me for over
a month now and has not repaid me or said anything
to me even though I see her all the time. I feel bad ask-
ing her for the money. How should I approach her, as
I need my money? –Frustrated
Dear Frustrated,
There is a popular statement that says “lend
money to a friend and you may lose both”. Money
issues sour a lot of friendships, but that is not what
you want to hear right now.
How should you approach the person? Just the
way they did you. Was the request made by email? In
person? Over the phone? Contact the person the
same way and make a polite request to know when
they will be repaying you as you really need the
money. It is better to ask the person when they are
alone, so as not to embarrass them. Depending on
the sum of money you may wish to request all of it, or
make an arrangement where you are paid a particular
sum weekly or monthly.
If it is a small amount, after asking twice, maybe
you can forget it and chalk it down to a valuable les-
son learned. At least you know that person will not be
coming back again and you don’t want to frustrate
yourself even further. If the amount is large, then you
may need to take further
action, knowing that it
might cost you the
friendship. This could be
asking the person to
give you something of
value in lieu of the cash
or maybe taking legal
action if necessary. That
should certainly be a last resort though.
Going forward, here are some things to consider
when asked to borrow money:
1. If it is a large amount, ask the person to get back
to them, so it gives you a chance to think about it
rather than feeling ‘put on the spot”.
2. Make an agreement as to the payback date so that
there is a mutual understanding.
3. If it is a small amount, you can afford it and the
person is not a habitual borrower and has a gen-
uine need, you might consider just giving it as a
gift, which eases the pressure of having to expect
it and feeling resentful when it is not returned.
4. Only lend if you can truly afford to lose it, if it is not
retuned.

Emancipate and Celebrate
The August Emancipation festivities are quick-
ly approaching once again and preparations have
long begun. The Festival and Fairs Committee has
announced the entertainers and the line up is set,
the Miss BVI Pageant has unveiled the five lovely
young ladies who will be competing for the crown,
as well as the Miss EELL contestants this past week-
end. Pretty soon we should see the festival ground
taking shape, with the lights, booths, stage and
Coney Island, so, it looks like things are on their
way.
This grand cultural celebration of ours has
been a time-honored tradition for 58 years now.
Festival in the BVI is a wonderful time, a time of fun,
food and family. Let’s be honest, where else in the
world can you enjoy a three day public holiday, and
be sanctioned to relax, eat, drink and, let’s admit it,
party.
There is so much to do over the three-day holi-
day. There is the Rise and Shine Tramp, the Parade,
Horse Races, East End Festival Village, the Miss BVI
Pageant, and much more. Then, when you think it’s
all over, there’s Carrot Bay Fiesta. I get exhausted
just thinking about it. The Miss BVI Pageant is one
of the events I most look forward to most. Last
year’s show was very well received and I am curious
to see how the contestants will out do themselves
this year.
Although attending the activities is wonderful,
my favorite part of festival is the food, of course. I
mean, it is the best part! Each booth offers some-
thing different, adding its own little flavor to our
already diverse festival grounds.
As the next generation takes over, some things
will remain the same. Festival in the BVI will always
be a time to celebrate our freedom, display our cul-
ture and come together as a people.
So, lets celebrate our BVI heritage, but remem-
ber while it is a time of chance and free-spirited fun,
please remember to be safe this festival season.

For Dr. Jennifer Ashton, the end of The Revolutionis at hand.
The score for ABC’s effort to replace two long-
running daytime dramas with weekday lifestyle pro-
grams is now 1-1: All My Children substitute The Chewis staying, but The Revolution — which took the OneLife to Live slot and involved medical expert Ashton, design authority Ty Pennington, style source Tim
Gunn and others — is not. Its final telecast is Friday,
July 6, and Ashton is happy with the attempt even if it
didn’t last too long.
“For me, the experience has been amazing,” she
reflects. “I always consider it a privilege to have the
opportunity to communicate through television with
millions of people ... and to deliver information in a
way that has the potential to improve their lives.
When you’re talking about medicine and health and
wellness, that’s a very real possibility, and I feel we did
that.”
A New Jersey-based obstetrician and gynecolo-
gist as well as an author (The Body Scoop for Girlsand Your Body Beautiful), the pleasant Ashton saysshe’s gratified her segments have incorporated real
women from the show’s audience.
“I think we were able to go into a little more
depth than I was used to doing in a
news format (as a former regular on
CBS News programs),” Ashton says,
“and we did it in a conversational way
that gave people insights I think really
helped them.
By definition, The Revolution hasbeen several things at once since
A Short-Lived ‘Revolution’ Wraps Up For Five Co-HostsAshton, Pennington, Gunn, trainer Harley Pasternak
and therapist Dr. Tiffanie Davis Henry all have their
own specialties to be serviced within a given hour.
“I would have liked to see more of a 360-degree
approach to lifestyle issues, even more than we had,”
Ashton says, “but that’s in my dream world. The reali-
ty of doing 37 minutes of programming in an hourlong
slot is that you can’t always do those things.
“An example I think would have been interesting
would have been for Tim Gunn and me to examine
how women who have had mastectomies dress them-
selves. Not everyone has those instructions. How do
they wear swimsuits? How do they wear evening
dresses? How do they dress for work? I have a long list
of topics I’d like to cover for television, and hopefully,
I’ll get to in the future.”
The Revolution also has been a lesson for Ashton— a mother of two whose husband is a physician and
surgeon — in juggling personal and professional com-
mitments along with a broadcasting presence.
“It has been probably the busiest eight months of
the last five years for me, because I didn’t cut back on
my patient hours. I just reshuffled them, so that meant
if we were taping three days a week, I was seeing
patients for 25 hours over two days.
“I saw the same number of
patients, if not more,” Ashton notes.
“I just had to fit them in with longer
hours that gave me less personal
time. I was able to do it, though. I have
such incredible patients, they felt they
were sharing me with the rest of the
country.”

Take Me HomeBy Jan Critchley
This is not your typical low budget, road movie.
Writer/Director Sam Jaeger together with an eleven-
person crew, took to the road in an RV from NYC to Big
Sur, California to capture this magical dramatic come-
dy against the backdrop of the American landscape.
After getting turned down by yet another photog-
raphy agency, Thom (Sam Jaeger) finds his landlord
throwing all of his belongings out into the hallway.
With no job prospects and no place to sleep, Thom
must turn to driving his illegal taxicab around the
streets of New York. Fortunately for him, Claire
Barrow (Amber Jaeger) isn't having a good day either.
First she comes home to find her husband flirting with
his new secretary, and then discovers her estranged
father has suffered a heart attack in California.
In a frenzy, Claire runs out into the night and hails
a cab that is being driven by Thom. With her life in
ruins, Claire decides to pay Thom to drive her out to
California and with nothing in New York to stay for,
Thom agrees. Their drive across thirteen states
involves working the airports to earn cash to buy gas,
a detour across a barren dessert when Claire falls
asleep at the wheel and the car runs out of gas and
the occasional family reunion. In one particular scene,
we see Thom breaking into a house through an
upstairs window, as Claire is sleeping outside in the
car. Claire awakes to find Thom missing, so she
knocks on the door to discover that this is his parent’s
house. His father in particular makes his disappoint-
ment in his son clear and although the mother is wel-
coming, there is a tension that permeates the entire
scene. When Thom reveals to Claire that he has stolen
money from them, she asks him what other lies he has
told – and he tells her, each and every one. However,
it's what awaits Thom and Claire in California that
forces them to choose between the lives they've left
behind and the possibilities they have glimpsed along
their journey of discovery.

By Dean “The Sportsman” Greenaway
After more then 600 boys and girls from public
and private primary, and high schools across the terri-
tory have spent two exciting months in competition,
they will wrap up play in the 2012 BDO Schools
Football League on Sunday, July 1, at the A. O. Shirley
Recreation Grounds.
There will be exhibition matches, championships
matches and the doling out of various awards.
Activities begin at 3 p.m.
Enid Scatliffe Blue will face Seventh Day
Adventist in an U7 exhibition match. The U9 finals will
feature First Impression vs Cedar Blue while First
Impression will face Cedar in the U12 final.
Following the championships, BDO will dole out
awards including jackets, caps, trophies, medals,
golden booths and MVP awards for each team.
The league began on May 29, giving BVI Football
officials a look at an untapped talent pool for the fur-
ther growth and development of the sport. Numerous
parents who were never into the sport became
involved and many could be seen on sidelines coach-
ing, cheering and encouraging their children’s team.
The Schools Football League, in which one of the
world’s top five accounting firms, BDO, invested
$20,000, has unearthed a bevy of talent, and new
players. The turnout among high school girls sur-
passed expectations, with more than 60 from three
schools coming out to play.
“We have never really had such a big sponsor for
the league and I must say thanks to BDO and Mr.
Bickerton. I think the sponsor is what brought out
most of the parents to the games,” coach Cassandra
Gregg said during the Sports Beat Magazine program
on ZROD on Thursday. “We are the only association
that gives the players everything they need to play for
free.”
Coach Vincent “Nabo” Samuel also thanked
BDO and said the BDO sponsorship allowed them to
put more resources into the national teams.
“It is a tremendous sponsorship, and Mr.
Bickerton and his staff have been a tower of strength
for us. Not only the sponsorship but the manpower,
the use of facebook, and the scores coming out –
everything was handled professionally and it has
given us more mileage than we have ever had,” he
noted. “It has gone to the point where people are
knocking on our door, calling and sending emails, and
asking for us to run the league again in September.
So, we are working on having a development league
for the Under 7s and Under 9s in September.”
Come out on Sunday and watch the kids in
action.
