Limerick and Clare Soldiers in the Bombay Army of the East India Company 1739-1860

The following list was abstracted from the Families in British India Society website in September/October 2015 by Brian Hodkinson, Limerick Museum.

http://www.search.fibis.org/frontis/bin/aps_browse_sources.php?mode=browse_components&id=147&s_id=13

It is intended as a search aid and not every bit of information is included. For instance, where soldiers left a will, if the beneficiary was a family member it is

recorded, but soldiers often left things to other soldiers, and a look at their names may be rewarding. You are advised to go back to the source.

Different levels of information were recorded at different times, e.g. initially only county was recorded, then later local towns were added; former

occupations are not recorded in the early days.

There were three Bombay European Infantry Regiments.

1st was recruited in England in 1662. It was renamed as a fusilier regiment in 1844. It was taken into the British Army after the Indian Mutiny and renamed

the 103rd Foot (Royal Bombay Fusiliers). In 1881 it merged with the 102nd Foot to become the Royal Dublin Fusiliers.

2nd Was raised in 1839 and in 1844 was renamed as a fusilier regiment. Taken into the British army after the Mutiny it became the 106th Foot (Bombay

Light Infantry). In 1881 it amalgamated with the 68th Foot to become the Durham Light Infantry

3rd Raised in 1853 it was taken into the British army and renamed the 109th Foot. In 1881 it merged with the 100th Foot to become The Prince of Wales's

Leinster Regiment (Royal Canadians).

Artillery was divided between the Horse Artillery and the Foot Artillery, the former being the more prestigious.
