What you have in your hands is a highly limited edition album with just the first four-teen recordings but rest assured that you’ll be hearing a lot more amazing tunes in the future. This is an ongoing project that is setting out to document a music scene currently punching well above its weight in Scotland, so we’ll be putting out new volumes as often as we can. You’ll notice that Limbo doesn’t have any particular remit in terms of genre. In fact, we like to push the boundaries of all the accept-able genres. Limbo is about breaking new ground, setting a new agenda and staying ahead of the curve with a real measure of authenticity. So, come down to the club any Thursday and you’ll witness Limbo consistently mixing

things up to give them a fresh twist. We’re booking as many exciting touring bands as possible and also endeavouring to make each night an event in itself with its own unique integrity. You get three bands every week, staged in an original and spectacular way with great visuals and the two of us filling in the gaps from the DJ booth. One of the best things about Limbo, though, is the incredible sound quality and all-round visual aesthetics of The Vooodoo Rooms. Bands love playing Limbo and you’re going to love Limbo too.

See you next Thursday!

Limbo has been kicking it at The Voodoo Rooms in Edinburgh, since November 2007. Since then we’ve recorded hundreds of hours of incredible music from almost 100 bands at the time of writing. We fi gured that it was about time you got to hear some of it.

We'd been trying for months to get Zoey van Goey to play Limbo and we were really excited when they eventually made it over from Glasgow, in November. By the time they went on, we were running late and they had to hastily and spontaneously re-structure their set to ! t into an unexpectedly tight schedule. Having opened with the magical song you hear here, they played a shorter set than usual with Kim taking over from Matt on drums at one point and previous single Foxtrot Vandals another early highlight, before! nishing with another slow, quiet beauty. The loudest thing in the room at the end of their performance was the unanimous reaction of the crowd.

Every time Edinburgh quintet Found play Limbo, it's an absolutely tearing success, so cemented andloyal is their local following. This gig was particularly special, as they were supporting US artist James Pants (Stones Throw), with Edinburgh abstract hip hoppers Penpushers playing their ! nal show, also in support. Found hadn't sound checked at all, due towork commitments and the venue always enforcing an early sound check time of 3-6pm because of itsrestaurant, so they were winging it from the off, but they'd clearly done this so many times before, itreally wasn't a problem. You can hear their self-con! dence in singer Ziggy's cocky one-liner to thecrowd at the start. Their set was all quirky electronics-meets-psyche-rock " air with some hummable songsto boot, and, as always, they received a rapturous reception for it.

Glasgow's Punch And The Apostles are defi nitely the loudest band we've ever had on, when all sevenof them are, err, rocking out in their mind-bogglingly original, vaudevillian way. This show provoked a noise complaint from the hotel next door. Punch are more like no wave, gyspy-punks than a rock band, boasting a full brass section and a somewhat crazed lead singer, Paul, who jams out unsettling melodies with weird time signatures on the piano, while tearing the place asunder with his neurotic, soul-searching lyrics. All this is rousingly comple-mented by the rest of the band, which also includes an electric violin and an accordion in the mix. Quite a mind-blowing concoction.

Edinburgh quartet Meursault are, hands down, oneof our favourite bands in Scotland right now and youget a hint of why listening to this song, one of the band's highlights to date and the title track of their debut album. It exhibits everything we love about them: Neil Pennycook's impassioned howl, his delicate banjo-playing and those visceral electronic beats and bleepy bloopy production effects. It's thiswondrous juxtaposition of harsher, more industrial sounds (a la Aphex Twin et al) with rustic, old instru-ments such as banjo, accordion and cajon that puts Meursault in a league of their own. We've watched them rise from closely guarded secret to touring out! t and local sensation. They're now prime mov-ers in the " ourishing Edinburgh scene. This date happened just before the album was re-released and subsequently widely critically acclaimed. We'll be very happy and not in the least bit surprised when Meursault all become famous internationally.

Glasgow trio Sparrow And The Workshop are another out! t we caught on to really early on and this recording was made at Sparrow's Limbo debut, which was only their second ever Edinburgh showand performed to a room full of local music industry, media and other movers and shakers, with almost as many music business a! cionados assembled in the room as general members of the public. LastChance is a killer live, but we have many other favour-ites in their set and it was a tough call deciding whichone to put out, ultimately coming down to which recording had captured the band at their best on the night, as we think this does, in spades. By the time of Sparrow's second Limbo appearance in December, they'd played a string of other slots around town and become the talk of the Edinburgh live music community.

Glasgow four-piece Isosceles have played Limbo three times now, they've been total pros every time and never disappointed us. Having debuted for us at the second ever Limbo in November 2007, they had clearly started to feel very much at home on our stage by the time they did this, their third, gig for us, a double headline bill with their Glaswegian pals/rivals, Popup. Singer Jack opened with a bit of jest: in the booth we played one of their songs off a CD and the band all started miming. It was especially comical since they had no problem at all tearing through the rest of their set, treating us to some great new material as well as old favourites Kitsch Bitch, Get Your Hands Off (featured here), I Go and Watertight. There really aren't any ! llers in Isosceles's live show and every song was worthy of inclusion here.

Gav and Ben are two of the funniest, friendliest individuals we've met since launching Limbo and there's a quirky charm about this Glaswegian duo that isn't fully represented by the demo on their myspace and can only be experienced live. But, while you don't really get a sense of that from listening to this song (A History of British Welfarism is one of their most serious and political songs), you do get a hint of the fun they have during their shows. They trash just about everything that is formulaic and dull about being in a band and genu-inely look like they are having the time of their lives doing it. And they're all the more exciting for it.

French/Argentine and based in Glasgow, A-lix have brought their raucous style to our stage a couple of times now and we always enjoy it. Their mix of punky guitars, retro synths and heavy beats could be called disco-punk, or, perhaps more ! ttingly, death disco. This recording is from their ! rst Edin-burgh gig and they were very keen to give a great show at Limbo. This they certainly did. A-lix have huge energy and enthusiasm, as demonstrated by the fact that, by the end on this night, Vincent was down at the front of the stage in the crowd, punching the air exuberantly. A very successful gig.

9. CANCEL THE ASTRONAUTSSlow Dance At the Disco

Edinburgh new wave pop fi ve-piece Cancel The Astronauts are hugely promising. We've had them on at Limbo a couple of times and their con! dence grows with every performance (so much so that at this gig, singer Michael felt self-assured enough to tell the audience a joke, which was quite hilarious at the time but sadly not deemed ! t for this CD). As always, they delivered a ! ne set of catchy numbers with unusual lyrics - light-hearted, " uffy and as much fun as the illustrations on their myspace. It may well be bubble-gum pop, but this is just as key to the club's style.

Edinburgh indie-rock trio Thieves In Suits are bold, boisterous and equally promising. They had hardly been on the go for more than a few months when we ! rst got them on but they still seemed to tear theplace to pieces with the tightness of their perfor-mance, not least drummer Jake, whose excited stylewas apparently re-living the memory of the Muppets' live-wire drummer, Animal. At one point he tossed his sticks into the crowd (to mock cries of pain fromthe sound booth). It summed up his band's carefree abandon and infectious energy. The band put in such a great performance at this gig, that we were wondering whether we shouldn't just release the whole recording as a Thieves In Suits live album.

Come On Gang! are far and away one of our favourite bands in Edinburgh right now and this was thethird appearance at Limbo by the punky pop three-piece. It was for our 2008 Christmas party and thelaunch of the band's split-single with fellow Edinburghindie-postrels Kid Canaveral. You can hear the excitement in drummer/singer Sarah's voice at thestart. The band's friends and fans were all out in forceand getting very drunk for Christmas but also ComeOn Gang! had just recently found out that they wouldbe going to Austin, Texas for industry hoe-down South By Southwest. Spinning Room is a great song but this recording really demonstrates the band's roughly-hewn style and effervescent energy.

Second Time Around was recorded at the same Christmas party/single launch as the Come On Gang! track. It's an unusual track for the band in that Kate is singing the lead and usually it's David but it has huge energy and the performance was really strong. Fresh back from their ! rst nationwide tour, the band were buzzing at this gig and getting very much into the spirit of the occasion. This was also the last time that they played with their long-standing drummer Dan which gave an additional emotional twist to the night's proceedings.

Haight-Ashbury have twice brought their magic spellsto the Limbo stage and we're convinced they're going places. This was recorded the second time they played Limbo but, coming from Glasgow, they still hadn't got used to our polite, quietly attentive crowd. Jen and Kirsty take turns doing the lead vocals, while Jen's brother, Scott, plays the lead guitar parts, but it's when the two girls sing in harmony that theyreally enchant. There's an eeriness about the two of them together which pervades the lyrics as well as the tone of their melodies. It's a bittersweet quality, suggesting a darker heart beats beneath Haight Ashbury's sugary surface and it gives them a real edge.

We found out about Night Noise Team on MySpace many moons before Limbo was born, partly as we were looking for local bands to include on the planned Dancing With Rigid Limbs compilation. That project was shelved when we were asked to set up Limbo but it has now dove-tailed in a very neat way into this one, so it's really ! tting that NightNoise Team should close this CD. We think this is theirbest song to date and they always play it at the end of their set, implying it's a personal favourite too. It always raises a cheer, but it was a particularly resonant cheer at Limbo that night.
