PREPP IN’ OUT By Thea Elder

Preppy fashion is back, and oh how delightful it is! It seems as though the original 50’s styles dresses and skirts are all the rage and with online stores such as Topshop, Princess Polly (Brisbane based), Nasty Gal and Market HQ, it is easier than ever (and in some cases, cheaper) to fit the current trend. The amazing thing about this trend coming back in the 21st century is that so much more fun can be packed into a simple dress. Instead of drab, drape-like patterns, the variation of the

high neck and A-line, Full or Pleated skirt or dress has started to be seen in rich, vibrant textures and patterns. There is even the incorporation of different materials, so now your favourite dress may have studded, sequined or even mesh embellishments that really add to the modern take on a 50’s classic. How to Wear: My suggestion for the perfectly sophisticated and sleek look would be Ph

to either pair a full mini skirt with a collared T-shirt and simple loafers or match a floral A-line dress with a chunky metallic belt and some chunky shadow platforms (found on Nasty Gal). Just one last word on this look is that it is completely versatile, it doesn’t matter whether it is Summer or Winter where you live, preppy fashion can be mixed to match your season and personal style. So make the most of it, and have fun playing around with different skirts, shirts, belts, hats, shoes and accessories!

like at beach !

Under the glassed cupola, you can savor a quick pie, some

tiramisu, or Nutella’s toasts and a lot of other desserts, ideal for a

The many uses of Watermelon

By: Anna

Larson

Page 21: Lilly Magazine: Issue no. 1

The immense size of watermelon makes it ideal for many uses. As you can see above, you can carve a watermelon like a pumpkin and use it to store other fruit during at the beach or at a summer party. But, besides “storage” you can also have many facemasks that involve watermelon. Watermelon has amazing vitamins that can save your sun-damaged skin. For sun damaged skin: Soak cotton pads with fresh watermelon juice and apply to any sunburned areas. Let the juice sit on your skin for 15 minutes before rinsing off with cool water. For inflamed, acne-prone skin: Mix 1 teaspoon watermelon juice with 1 teaspoon of mashed Banana. Apply to your face and let sit for 10-15 minutes before rinsing with warm water. source

Dull skin: Apply a teaspoon of watermelon juice mixed with a teaspoon of Greek yogurt to your face, allow it to sit for at least 10 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water. Source You can also make a watermelon toner. Squeeze the juice of 1/2 lemon over 1 slice of watermelon and refrigerate it for at least 20 minutes. Remove the watermelon slice and chop into fine bits. Place the melon on your face as a facial toner. It's messy, so use a towel. The recipe not only tightens pores and moisturizes but also will cool you down on a hot day. Rinse thoroughly with cool water. Source

Picnicking

Picnics are iconic for summer; we are providing you with amazing recipes and an outfit idea for your picnic.

“Tea to the English is a really a picnic indoors” Alice Walker The above quote from Alice Walker is what you should think of when dressing for a picnic. Keep your picnic outfit classy and simple, nothing extreme or nothing that

will show to much when you sit down on the ground. It can get cold during a picnic also, so bring a sweater just in case. I also don’t recommend wearing heels to a

picnic because you don’t want your heel to get stuck in mud or soil.

Picnic recipes

Macaroni and Potato Salad Ingredients

• 3 large (1 1/3 pounds each) all-purpose potatoes, peeled and cut into 3/4-inch cubes

• 1/2 teaspoon(s) salt, plus more for cooking water • 2 cup(s) sugar-snap peas (6 ounces) • 1/4 pound(s) elbow macaroni, cooked al dente and drained • 1 pound(s) sliced bacon • 10 tablespoon(s) homemade or prepared mayonnaise • 3 tablespoon(s) sour cream • 1 1/2 tablespoon(s) cider vinegar • 1/4 teaspoon(s) freshly ground black pepper • 1/2 cup(s) loosely packed fresh mint leaves, torn into pieces

Page 32: Lilly Magazine: Issue no. 1

32

Directions

1. Place potatoes in a small stockpot, and cover with cold salted water. Place over high heat, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium high, and gently boil the potatoes until fork-tender, about 7 minutes. Drain in a colander, and set aside in a large bowl to cool.

2. Fill a small saucepan with salted water, and bring to a boil. Add the snap peas, and cook until bright green, about 30 seconds. Drain, and transfer peas to a bowl of ice water until cool. Drain again, slice peapods in half crosswise diagonally, and add to potatoes along with cooked macaroni.

3. In a large skillet, cook bacon until all the fat is rendered out and bacon is very crisp. Remove bacon from skillet, and set aside to drain on paper towels. When bacon is cool, crumble, and add three-quarters of it to potato mixture; set aside remaining bacon.

4. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, sour cream, vinegar, remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt, and pepper. Pour the dressing over potato mixture, add mint, and toss to combine. Transfer macaroni-and-potato salad to a serving dish, sprinkle top with remaining bacon, and serve immediately, or cover and store in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

PIMP MY KEYCHAIN

Photo: Kendall Jenner’s Instagram

Page 41: Lilly Magazine: Issue no. 1

41

It seems to be the latest trend, pimping out your keys. I have noticed since I have got my drivers license (and car) that my key chain has grown exponentially. But, it is really just mine. I think not. I have also noticed my friends’ key chains also expanding; but not just with key chains from places they went on vacation to. One thing I have noticed the most is the tail. It is so large and obnoxious, you can’t miss it; however, it does add something that nothing else adds to your keys. Along with the large, noticeable key chains route is the leather tassel. The tassels are basically as long as the tail but a little less hipster and more rockers. You can’t forget about the basic and never changing lanyards that are on the set of ever girls’ keys if they are under 21 years old. I know, and heard, of some people who have different lanyards and key chains for different days of the week and different moods. It may seem a little excessive but is it better for teens to buy $10 key chains compared to $40 shirts? I, personally, am waiting for the TV show about decorating key chains, what are your thoughts? Use the hashtag #pimpmykeychains to tell your opinions.

Happiness leads to Success “An Inspiration Piece”

Written & Photos by Harija Ravitharan (Owner of My Lyfe ; My Story

http://mylyfe‐mystory.blogspot.com)

"Success is not the key to

happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love

what you are doing, you will be successful."

Herman Cain These are some simple sentences in simple

words.

Success is achievable by everyone; however it all depends on how one believes in them. Just by believing, you would have achieved a

power of happiness that can’t be destroyed by anyone or anything. This is the first step to reach success; which many of us don’t realize. Every day just waking up feeling happy is a fresh start which leads to success. Many us of do not believe or understand how important it is for us to have trust upon ourselves. Many of do not even try to find the joy life rather we just endure the things placed on the pathway. When waking up in the mornings think about the things you love to do. Do you love to talk? Do you love to learn? Do you love to write?

Page 43: Lilly Magazine: Issue no. 1

43

Do you love to draw? Do you love to read? Do you love to make others laugh? Do you love to teach people about things? Do you love to interact with others? Do you love to solve others with their problems?

What is it? What is it that you enjoy doing? What is it that makes you feel good? What is it that makes you happy? What is it that makes you believe that your had a successful day? What is it that you like to do? What is it?

When you love whatever you are doing even the hardest task in extreme situation would be one of your best life experiences.

Love what you do make a huge difference emotional when compared to do things that you hate.

For instances, when you hate you are doing; only fifty percent of your effort is used the other half of your effort is used on complaining, worrying and randomly stressing out. However, when do something you love; one hundred percent of effort is given (sometimes even more), because without even known you would complete the given task whole hearted. This in fact makes a huge impact on the end result of the given task.

However, just remember what is important to you is only for you, not for me, not for them, not for anyone else except you! As I always say, “Who cares? Just do it! Regardless of what you do, people will always have something to say to you.” So don’t care about the negative comments others might say, because it’s your life and not theirs. It’s your life goals you are trying to fulfill and not the others. Learn to live for yourself than to please the others around you, as this could end up being your biggest downfall to achieve your goal. Also, remember there are those out there who believe in you more than you believe in yourself and who would do

anything to help you achieve your goal. Overall, the happier you are the faster you would reach your ambitions. You would also appreciate your own achievements on each step you take to reach your goal. You would see each day brighter and more energized to step outside to face all the challenges each day have in store. It would boost your confidence and learn to reinforce your determination to succeed for an exciting future. Just remember, to happy always learn to LOVE, LAUGH & LIVE. By doing these three things you would learn to spread the love and happiness with everyone around the world! Plus, as mention before you should not waste your precious life looking back to the negative comments but instead you should move forward and simply, LOVE, LAUGH & LIVE!

Happiness is the pathway to success and not the other way around!
