The Oakwood Softball team has sloweddown from their fast start. They are now 11-18. The team had a difficult time getting clutchhits with runners on base.

“Every game we’ve played, we’ve hadan opportunity to win,” said Coach RickBough.

Katie Haas got her 100th career hit onApril 21 against Ficher. She is only the fourthplayer in OHS history to achieve 100 careerhits.

Deanna Wise has the record at 115 ca-reer hits. Haas has a legitimate shot at break-ing the record. There are six games left andKatie now has 105 hits.

“It was exciting since I’ve been play-ing for four years, said Haas. “It was a bigaccomplishment that I am happy to get.”

The team has been improving sincetheir recent slump. They have won three out

By Laura LucasThe girls’ track team has had an eventful year so far. Their season will continue

cancelled that the girls didn’t have all the chances that they could have,” said CoachLynn Anderson.

The team placed fourth in a mini meet at Catlin. Only two county schools weren’tcompeting at that meet.

Okay, so many senior issue columnsmight drone on about how they are either sadbecause we are leaving OHS or ecstatic be-cause we are getting the heck out of this place.I’m not too big on that so let’s just get it overwith and move on. I will miss my friends andthe memories that we have made these past12 years, but I am more than ready to start anew chapter in my life. There. My versionwas sweet, simple, and to the point.

I am still over excited about our recentjournalism competitions, so I thought I wouldtalk about them. We had an assembly for theclass and it was in the paper, but I am here toinform the readers of the behind the scenesaction.

At Sectionals, our goal was just to beatUniversity High School. Every year it seemsthat The Oakwood Times falls short to the“brainy” kids that go to Uni. When Erin Pooand I walked into the Yearbook Layout con-test, we lost all hope of winning anything. The program that we had to use was brandnew to us and we didn’t have the slightestclue. We began to figure it out and were quiteproud of ourselves until we glanced acrossthe room and saw the Uni kids creating somesort of masterpiece. We were knocked downa few inches. We finished our layout andhoped for the best.

I felt like the dumbest person to walkthe planet when I walked into my ComputerGenerated Graphics contest. There were onlyfour of us in the room, but I had no idea was

a computer generated graphic was. When Ivolunteered to take on the challenge, I neverknew I might have to turn in a blank sheet ofpaper. I spent the first30 minutes surfing theweb to try and figureout what I was evensupposed to be mak-ing.

The girl next tome was more than pre-pared. She kept askingquestions about pro-grams and files andeverything was wayover my head. Sheeven had a program ofher own which shebrought on her USBport. I turned my com-puter screen awayfrom her so I wouldn’tbe embarrassed whenshe saw that I was try-ing to figure out howto even get started. She ended up yelling ather computer because it wouldn’t do whatshe wanted it to.

At awards, we never expected to do aswell as we did. We didn’t beat UniversityHigh, but we received several awards. Ap-parently, yelling at a computer doesn’t doanything for you because I ended up placingsecond in Computer Generated Graphics,

beating the crazy girl next to me. The an-nouncer even said we should get the spiritaward because we were going crazy! Ten out

the 12 people advancedto state.

At State, thewhole team felt nowherenear prepared. Therewere over 50 schoolsthere and we were oneof the few smallschools. Dixie was theonly girl who had a cam-era that fit in her purse,I still didn’t know whata graphic was, and totop it all off, I didn’thave the slightest cluehow to work a MACcomputer. To say theleast, we were in wayover our heads.

We had to leaveawards early, but beforewe did, we talked to the

school who ended up winning the wholething. They asked us how many people wehad in our school, and when we said around300 students, their reply was “in your school, not in your class.” They were amazed thatour entire school has less people than oneclass in theirs. I might add that their paperwas absolutely amazing! Erin decided to giveout her number to some guy on that team and

he agreed to call us with the results.I was curling Erin’s hair when she an-

swered his phone call. By the expression onher face, I new something amazing had hap-pened. Then I heard “Erin Davis? I’m ErinDavis!” Then she started crying and handedthe phone off. Erin Poo got the rest of theresults and hung up the phone. We hadplaced third in the State! The entire busstarted screaming, and I’m pretty sure wenearly gave the driver a heart attack. Mr. Leewas just sitting at the back of the bus shak-ing his head in disbelief.

We were afraid that the boy was lyingto us so we went to check the internet. Mr.Lee decided to race us to his room, but just ashe took off, his bag broke and his camera andbatteries rolled down the hall. We took aminute to laugh and then we raced passedhim.

After being reassured about our vic-tory, we called Mrs. Ludwig and left her avery loud, obnoxious voice mail. The excite-ment was just too much for us. Not only didwe place third, but the infamous Uni Highdidn’t even place in the top 10! That day wasone to be remembered!

So to all of you going to be upperclass-men, who are trying to decide on your elec-tives, why not give journalism a chance? Notonly will you get hands on experience in in-terviewing, writing, and page layout, butyou just might get to watch Mr. Lee make afool out of himself.

What goes around comes around. I’m sure you’veall heard that before. And this follows with a little thingcalled Karma. Karma, from my understanding is when youdo something for someone, and it returns to you in an-other form, or even in another life. You may also believe itfollows the phrase, “Do unto others as you would havethem do unto you,” which is a lesson from the Bible.

I learned this one night on a first-hand basis. AfterI got off of work one evening, I was giving my friendDavid a ride to his friend’s house from work. I stopped bythe Speedway up north in Danville to put gas in my car.As I was pumping my gas, I looked down at the ground, and I noticed a check stub. At first I wasn’t even going tomess with it, but then as I was pumping my gas, I thoughtabout it, and I figured I wouldn’t want my information onthe ground like that. I seriously doubt anyone else wouldeither. So I picked it up and opened it. There were twocheck stubs, and one of them still had the check attached!

When I got in my car and showed David the check(which was almost $300), his first thought was “I wonderif we can cash this!” I told him it wasn’t a good idea, and

we should go to the address on the check and see if we couldget a reward out of it. I didn’t really think we were going toget anything out of it, but I would want someone to do the

same thing for me if I lost my check. So, first of all, I don’t know the side streets of

Danville very well. I know how to get to the essentialplaces, but when it comes to specific places with direc-tions of “turn left here, then right there,” I’m lost. We hadto figure out where James Place was.

We called one of our buddies Seth from Domino’sand asked him where it was. He told us, but we had tohave him drive out there and show us where it was atanyways, because like I said, I get lost very easily.

We got to the house and the lady that answeredthe door looked at us really weird. We asked her if thename on the check lived there and explained to her wherewe found it. She was very thankful that we brought thecheck back to her house. She told us to hang on for asecond and came back with forty dollars for us. All Icould say was, “Wow thank you!”

So basically, what I am trying to get across is thatwhen you do things for others, you get things in return. It may not be an immediate result, but eventually Karmawill come back to you. But keep in mind, bad Karma canreturn as well.

Journalism competition was much more than expected

I believe in KarmaHopefully my good deed will be paid back

I grew up with a softball field a block away from myhouse. I can remember hearing the distinct sound of thebat hitting the ball. PLINK! A game had started and Inever wanted to miss a second of it.

I would run inside to get money for a Pixy Stick, and off I went. I was a fan of the Muncie-Fithian girls’softball team, as my mother was the coach. I learned thevalues of the game, while never actually playing withthese girls that were double my age.

I loved the bond the girls had. Between the cheersand the tears I was there to see it all. With each game Igained respect for the players as well as the sport. I didn’trealize it at that point, but I have continued the lessons Ilearned then throughout my life.

The race to first base can be seen as my primaryand secondary schooling. Though it takes quite a greatdeal of effort to get the ball in the air, it’s worth the satis-faction of watching it fly. As goes my schooling strugglesthus far, but now I’m ready to fly. Everyone has to startsomewhere right?

The determination to get to second base can becompared to my journey to college. It takes courage tolead off, but once you have, you had better stand strongin your decision. Whether you choose to take risks orplay it safe, college will present a newfound test on yourdetermination. However, the real test comes when you

Going to college will be like stealing second base

stand up for yourself. Whether you’re standing up for yourclass choices or otherwise, don’t let anyone one tell youyou’re not important.

The idea of getting to third base often seems unlikely, with all the rules of play and chances of outs. That’s yourintention though, and you will prove the doubters wrong.Honestly, people probably expect you to live in the town yougrew up in for the rest of your life, but this is your chance toprove them wrong. I honestly hop eto live in England one

day, and even if that never happens, its the fact that I willstill believe it could happen.

Take up a career in your desired field and go whereit takes you. You may not know what a new town holdsin store for you, but embrace your fears and grow fromthem. Meeting new people allows you to build strongrelationships so that they may be there when you needthem most.

Finally, the hope and aspiration to making it tohome plate makes your heart race. Your run will help theteam, assuming you make it in safely. In life deciding toown a home, marry, and have children gives you a greatdeal of value to society. Not to mention that this allowsthe game to continue.

I learned that my talent never came with hand-eyecoordination, but I also learned to love the game of soft-ball and all the morals it teaches you. From the coachesand the fans, life lessons can be learned if you’re willingto listen.

Your life outside of high school will continue topresent you curve balls, line drives, and home runs. Forwhether you choose to play your game at a slow or fastpace, I hope you realize that it’s not whether you’ve wonor whether you’ve lost, but more importantly, it’s howyou played the game.

So, I’ve decided that al-though I have always looked for-ward to college, I don’t want togo anymore. Not because it’ll betoo hard or too far from home, butbecause I don’t really feel likedoing anything at all.

The U of I won’t be a badplace to be, but I’d much ratherjust hang out with my friends allthe time. They’re good people.

The problem is this: I don’twant to do ANYTHING … includ-ing going to work. And it’s notthat I don’t like work. I do. But Ilike the people at work, not thestanding there, swiping groceriesacross a laser, and taking peoples’money that I don’t even get tokeep.

But to tell you the truth, work is one of the most fun things.I have made gobs of friends atwork, and I’m more than a littlesurprised that it hasn’t gotten mefired.

Everyday that I work I talkto every other checker there.Even when the customers arethere. And there may or may nothave been a few times that I’veanswered my phone at work ...while I was with a customer.

And I don’t really domuch. I mostly stand there ex-cept from 5 to 6 p.m. That’s thebusy time. Don’t come in then.

I’d rather take a nap. Andone time I did. But I was only acouple of minutes late for work.

I also like to travel. I’m go-ing to Haiti again this summer. Ihad fun last year and helped alot of people, so I decided it wasa good thing to do.

In fact, I think it may bethe only thing that I’m doing(that takes effort) that I want todo. Everything else is just blah.

All I want to do is hangout with my friends. It’s the mostfun I have. I have a lot of them

too. Not just your averagefriends either. I have friendsfrom everywhere, all kinds ofthem. I try to make friends withpeople wherever I go. Myfriends are my favorite peopleto hang out with for a reason. It’s because they’re amazing.

The friends fromOakwood, St. Joe, Mahomet...everywhere. And it doesn’tmatter where we are. We go ev-erywhere together, theOakwood Truck Plaza, Barnesand Noble, Steak ‘n Shake,Chevy’s, La Pot, the MunciePark . Those are where thememories are. And those are theplaces I want to stay forever.

Ew. That was sappy.Anyway, there was one

thing that I wanted to do, but Ican’t. I wanted to stay in Haitifor a year. It’s my favorite placeon Earth and I get to help a lotof people. That’s what I really

want to do. Unfortunately, I can’tstay for that long because I haveonly been to Haiti once and,“Rules are rules.”

So, I guess I’ll just go tothe U of I. But I’ll make fun, be-cause that’s how I roll. And mostof my friends will still be around. Ican “hang” with them when I feellike.

But the others will be goneand that’s not okay with me at all.I will miss them, but I hope I’llmake new friends too. And if Idon’t, my friends promised thatthey’d still be there.

The the good part aboutgraduating is that now I canchoose who I WANT to talk to. Idon’t have to make pointless con-versation with people that I don’treally know.

Life is good… except for allthe work it takes to make it good. That, I could most definitely dowithout.

I’ll make fun, becausethat’s how I roll.

A trip around the bases

Life with my friends is good, work is not so goodMoving on with my life
