Translation for Global Literacy

Division of World Languages, Literatures

and Cultures

UNIVERSITY OF IOWA

A NEW UNDERGRADUATE MINOR

Globalization involves, among otherthings, the wideranging and rapid exchange of information. Virtually all forms of global exchange—i.e. material goods, natural resources, knowledge, values, ideologies and cultures--depend on translation across languages. Aided by human migration across national borders, globalization encourages rich interaction among cultures, languages and values.

In this reality, translation becomes a crucial means of global literacy & communication, through which we come to know the others, ourselves, as well as the dynamic diversity that surrounds and shapes us.

Highly integrative, Translation for Global Literacy fosters learning at the intersection of world languages, creative writing and disciplinary programs. Study abroad is strongly encouraged.

For incoming students with proficiency in a world language besides English, including students whose first language is not English, the minor is attractive way to enhance their communication skills and build on their UI studies in English.

Students who are interested in careers in translation usually combine the minor with a major in a world language, pursue a service learning project or an internship and, ultimately, consider graduate study in translation.

REQUIREMENTS at a glance 18 semester hours of coursework including:

• Introductory Gateway course, Translationand the Global Society

• Hands-on Translation Workshops • Language, Linguistics, Literature & Culture

courses• Capstone Experience • Students can complete service learning

projects Study Abroad opportunities. Overseas courses in translation, IESinternship programs and other hands-on experiences can count toward therequirements for the minor.

Lecture - Monsoon Harvests: Water Sustainability & Rainwater Harvesting in South India Eric Tate, Assistant Professor in the Department of Geographical and Sustainability Sciences, will be presenting a lecture discussing water sustainability and rainwater harvesting in South India. This presentation uses the South India as a case study to explore the social, economic, and environmental dimensions of rainwater harvesting systems for smallholder agriculture.

Rainwater harvesting, a “soft path” approach towards water management, is increasingly recognized as a key strategy for combating food insecurity and water scarcity. Tate’s research team has evaluated the viability of centuries-old rainwater harvesting tanks under current climate and population pressures, culminating in a new approach for developing water sustainability indicators that better reflect interacting human and environmental processes.

The lecture is hosted by the Iowa City Foreign Relations Council, and will take place on Thursday, October 8 from 12:00PM-1:00PM at the Congregational Church (30 N Clinton St, Iowa City). Click here to register.

80% of all people under 50 years of age will have HPV at some point in their lives. One in two current college students have HPV.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the human papillomavirus (HPV) is thought to be responsible for more than 90% of anal and cervical cancers, about 70% of vaginal and vulvar cancers, and more than 60% of penile cancers.

“Someone You Love: The HPV Epidemic” is a feature length in-depth documentary on the stories of struggle, tragedyand triumph surrounding this complicated and often misunderstood infection. Women are living with (and dying from) HPV related cancers every single day. These women are real. Real Mothers, Real Daughters, Real Wives, Girlfriends, Friends and Sisters. Anybody who has been sexual with even one partner is at a high risk for catching HPV. Thisdocumentary lifts the veil and reveals some of the faces of HPV and sheds light on the risks, myths, problems, politics, misconceptions and hard truths about this widespread epidemic.

The Quad Cities Food Hub is a bi-state initiative (staffed almost entirely by women) that connects farmers and consumers in Iowa and Illinois, in an effort to augment regional local food production and consumption. It's part of a network of Regional Food System Working Groups in the state of Iowa.

Two outstanding projects are their Shared Use Community Kitchen, and Local Market Store, both

located in the QCFH headquarters at the historic Freight House building on the banks of the Mississippi River. The Freight House also contains a farmers' market, a farm-to-table deli and a craft brewery and pub -- all within walking distance of the Radisson. Our urban ag field tour on Friday will make a stop at the Food Hub, and our popular Friday evening farm-to-table tasting event will take place in the community kitchen.
