What is Lightroom

• Fundamental purpose: cataloging system forall of your images (and now video)

• NOT a replacement for Photoshop: Cannow making creative and localizedadjustments

• *WORKFLOW: from import, to filemanagement, to developing, to output(web, print, slideshow)




Workflow Not Slow

• Makes your life easier!

• Manage thousands of files

• Easy, batch editing

• Don’t need several different programs tohandle images




Catalogs

•Interactive, Searchable catalogs

• Don’t need files on computer to search,locate

•Search by date taken, keywords, equipmentused, aspect ratio, ETC!




Essential Concepts

• Parametric image editing: makingchanges to a set of instructions, not original

files• Changes only ‘applied’ when opened in

Photoshop (usually on a new image)

• ** Can’t HURT your images!**

• Non-destructive editing

•Always go back, reset, revert




Export vs. Save

•No “save” button

• Make changes to set of instructions,automatically ‘saved’ but not applied

•To “save” or apply changes, open inPhotoshop OR use Export

•Exports as ‘flattened’ files

• Can’t go back and undo Lightroomchanges

•Can’t access any Photoshop layers,changes

Virtual Copies

• Like “virtual folders”

•When putting images into collection, youaren’t moving the images or duplicating

• Simply putting a reference within this‘virtual folder’ to group images or go back

and access specific selects

• EX: Banff Vacation Slideshow Collection

Identity Plate

• Lightroom > Identity Plate (or File >Identity Plate)

• Graphical identity plate: Logo, icon

• Use .png to maintain transparency!

•Identity plate to overlay with print,slideshow, web for branding

• No more than 57 pixel high

Color Management:

Profiles• “Profile”... NOT managed by printer!

• Download ICC Color Profiles

• Find exact printer and exact paperfrom printer website

• Mac: Library>ColorSync>Profiles

• PC: Right click, ‘install’




Rendering Intent

• Perceptual: Tries to maintain colorrelationships for most ‘pleasing’ look (not

necessarily accurate to screen)

• Relative Colormetric: Most accurateinterpretation to screen and tonal values of

photo

• Which is right? Whichever looks best...




Print continued...

• Turn off any color management by printer

• Print Dialogue> Printer Settings? ColorManagement: “Off”

• Turn OFF “High Speed”

• Output Resolution: SuperPhoto ‘1440 dpi’




Print to JPG

• Only use with Lightroom layouts, otherwise just export jpg

• Quality 80 +

• Color profile: check with lab, most sRGB




Print to PDF

• Great for contact sheets• Remember media resolution (72dpi vs

300dpi)

• Print > PDF > Save as PDF
