As Jesus said in Matthew 6:10, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.Clearly, the will of God is done in heaven. Therefore, any areas in which Gods will is done are also part of His kingdom. In the Gospel of Matthew, we read of three places where this is true. The basic building block of the kingdom of God is the individual Christian. This is the person who meets the criteria Jesus has established, for He says, Blessed are the poor in spirit, theirs is the kingdom of heaven, Matthew 5:3. To be poor in spiritmeans to be impoverished in the area of the human spirit (i.e., pride, ego, arrogance, vanity, etc.). When this person gets selfout of Gods way, God can rule in their life. For as Jesus says, The kingdom of God is within you,Luke 17:21. Now if we take everyone who is part of Gods kingdom and combine them into one group, the scriptures call this group of people the church.Jesus said to Peter after he confessed Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God,Jesus said to him, “…upon this rock [i.e. his confession] I will build My church; and the gates of Hades shall not overpower it. And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven,Matthew 16:18-19. Thus, we see that Jesus uses the terms churchand kingdomsynonymously in this passage. Therefore, the one church of the Bible is peopled by all those in whom Jesus is allowed to rule. The final realm in which Jesus rules is in heaven itself. We noted that in the first paragraph, (see Matthew 6:10). Jesus also tells us this will be the place into which we are ushered following the judgment, with the words, Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world,Matthew 25:34. Our responsibility as kingdom citizens is to share the good news of the kingdom with all our relatives, friends and acquaintances. When we lovingly do this and they obediently choose to respond, they will also become members of of Gods kingdom! When they believed Philip preaching the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were being baptized, men and women alike, Acts 8:12. They found their way back to the starting point by leaving piles of rocks as markers. These signs were first called day-marks. But how would they find their way back at night? Since so much of the shoreline looked very similar, they decided to let their friends light a bonfire on a high point to guide them to the right landing area. Sometimes they even used a pole or a tripod to hang a metal basket con- taining a fire as a method of signaling. The first lighthouses were actually given to us by Nature herself. Sailors some- times used landmarks such as glowing volcanoes to guide them. In the early days of wooden ships with sails, it was easy for the wind and waves to push them against the rocks and wreck them. Therefore, the need for lighthouses as warning signals arose. The word "lighthouse" represents a variety of ideas and emotions... beauty, romance, isolation, fear, danger, security, sacrifice, home, etc. Lighthouses are usually stunning buildings in spectacular surroundings. Lighthouse stories have given us some of the classic themes used by storytellers throughout history. The technology is interesting, the buildings are beautiful, the stories of the lighthouse keepers are fascinating. The lighthouse keepers were a group of regular people who selflessly staffed isolated stations to help ensure the safety of others. Christians often wonder, who is our lighthouse keeper? Jesus answers that question in John 8:12, Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. The light of Christ is the brightness of God shining on the eye of the human soul. Life can be wonderful on earth, but not fully complete without Jesus. We are all created to crave the Creator (our Father) and only through a relationship with Jesus can the dark parts of our hearts brighten. Just as ships follow lights to ensure safe passage, we rely on the light of the Savior. Jesusdeath broke through the dark- ness, lighting the way for us. Gods word (through the enlightening of the Holy Spirit), helps us understand that we need His wisdom to steer us. We can see the light everyday as we communicate to our Lord through prayer. Just as mariners sailing in rough seas searching for the safety and comfort of the guiding light, we too can find that comfort in Christ. When we have the light of the world in our life, we too, can be the keepers of the light and let it shine to others. The Kingdom of God

KINGDOM: “The realm in which a king rules.” The spiritual kingdom of God is the spiritual realm in which God rules. As Jesus said in Matthew 6:10, “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” Clearly, the will of God is done in heaven. Therefore, any areas in which God’s will is done are also part of His kingdom. In the Gospel of Matthew, we read of three places where this is true.

The basic building block of the kingdom of God is the individual Christian. This is the person who meets the criteria Jesus has established, for He says, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, theirs is the kingdom of heaven,” Matthew 5:3. To be “poor in spirit” means to be impoverished in the area of the human spirit (i.e., pride, ego, arrogance, vanity, etc.). When this person gets “self” out of God’s way, God can rule in their life. For as Jesus says, “The kingdom of God is within you,” Luke 17:21.

Now if we take everyone who is part of God’s kingdom and combine them into one group, the scriptures call this group of people “the church.” Jesus said to Peter after he confessed Jesus is “the Christ, the Son of the living God,” Jesus said to

him, “…upon this rock [i.e. his confession] I will build My church; and the gates of Hades shall not overpower it. And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven,” Matthew 16:18-19. Thus, we see that Jesus uses the terms “church” and “kingdom” synonymously in this passage. Therefore, the one church of the Bible is peopled by all those in whom Jesus is allowed to rule.

The final realm in which Jesus rules is in heaven itself. We noted that in the first paragraph, (see Matthew 6:10). Jesus also tells us this will be the place into which we are ushered following the judgment, with the words, “Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world,” Matthew 25:34.

Lighting the Way

Many years ago, people decided to explore the waters by boat. They found their way back to the starting point by leaving piles of rocks as markers. These signs were first called day-marks.
