SCCPSS ONCE AGAIN EARNS MERITORIUS
BUDGET AWARD
The Association of School Business Officials (ASBO) International has awarded the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System a 2018-19 Meritorious Budget Award for excellence in budget presentation. ASBO International’s MBA and Pathway to the MBA promote and recognize best budget presentation practices in school districts.
Participants submit their applications and budget documents to a panel of school financial professionals who review the materials for compliance with the MBA Criteria Checklist and other requirements and provide expert feedback that districts can use to improve their budget documents. Districts that successfully demonstrate they have met the necessary program requirements may earn either the MBA or Pathway to the MBA, an introductory program that allows districts to ease into full MBA compliance. Awarded budget documents are accurate, easy to read, and communicate the district’s goals and objectives.
This is the eleventh year that the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System’s Division of Finance has participated in the MBA program – showing a commitment to sound fiscal management and budgetary policies.

THREE SCCPSS SCHOOLS PARTNERED WITH COPE SAVANNAH AND N-LAWS
PRODUCE TO PROMOTE HEALTHY EATING
Savannah State University received a $3.92 million, seven-year extension of the Gaining Early
Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) Partnership Grant from the U.S.
Department of Education. GEAR UP will continue to assist Savannah-Chatham County Public School
System (SCCPSS) with high school graduation and college enrollment efforts.
The partnership grant enables students to gain the academic skills and motivation necessary to
enroll in a postsecondary institution. The grant promotes rigorous academic coursework to reduce
the need for remedial education at the secondary school and postsecondary levels. Services
include academic tutorials, Saturday sessions, summer bridge programs, test preparation
workshops, mentoring, job shadowing, financial aid information, college application assistance,
academic advisement, assistance in secondary and postsecondary course selections, personal and
social counseling activities, campus visits, educational/cultural field trips and financial literacy
sessions.
GEAR UP will enroll approximately 700 grades 6th and 7th students from DeRenne and Hubert
middle schools as a cohort to begin the program this fall. The project will track the cohort as they
matriculate through middle school, into high school and through the first year of college.

November was the first month Beach High, Derenne Middle, and Hodge Elementary partnered for Eat Fresh and Free, and the results were staggering. Through the combined efforts of all three schools, 561 people received fresh fruits and vegetables. That is nearly double of previous months, making it the most successful Eat Fresh and Free to date.
COPE Savannah provided 2000 pounds of produce in collaboration with N-Laws Produce. Brittany and her team from Memorial Hospital were on hand to educate participants about portion size and nutrition. In addition, we all know how important health insurance is and with Medicare open enrollment available until December 7th, WellCare was kind enough to join us to let community members know about deadlines, coverage options from all Medicare providers in the state, and what they need to do to enroll.

CHECKING
BENEFICIARIES –
NOW IS A GOOD
TIME!
When is the last time you updated your beneficiary designations? It’s open enrollment time, so now is a perfect time to check your designated beneficiaries. It's truly amazing the amount of people who have prior spouses or deceased relatives still named as a beneficiary on a retirement account at a former employer, or on a life insurance policy purchased long ago. That's why it's so important that after marriages, divorces, births, deaths and other major life events, account-holders need to check and, if necessary, update beneficiary statements.
Congratulations to the Isle of Hope Student Astronaut Club for having qualified two teams
to compete at the Student Astronaut Challenge, National Competition, February 3rd - 7th,
held at Kennedy Space Center.
