Bible Reading

Page 30: Lighting the Candle

BIBLE READINGJohn 13: 1

It was before Passover meal and Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and to return to the Father. He had always loved his followers and he loved them to the end.

Luke 22: 14 - 20When the time came for Jesus and the disciples to eat, he said to them, ‘I have very much wanted to eat this Passover meal with you before I suffer. I tell you that I won’t eat another Passover meal until it is finally eating in God’s Kingdom.

Page 31: Lighting the Candle

Jesus took some bread in his hands and gave thanks for it. He broke the bread and handed it to is disciples. Then he said, ‘This is my body, which is given for you. Eat it as a way of remembering me!’

After the meal he took a cup of wine in his hands. Then he said, ‘This is my blood. It is poured out for you and with it God makes a new agreement.’

The Message of Easter:

Page 34: Lighting the Candle
Page 35: Lighting the Candle

On the Thursday before Jesus died,

he had a special meal with his

students,The Disciples.

Page 36: Lighting the Candle

This meal was called the ‘Passover’ which is still a special Jewish feast. Jesus wanted to have this meal with them because he knew he would die soon.

Page 37: Lighting the Candle

Jesus talked with them and told

them many things that would

happen.

Page 38: Lighting the Candle

At the beginning of the meal, Jesus took a bowl

of water and a towel.

Page 39: Lighting the Candle

Then he went around each disciple and washed their feet.

Page 40: Lighting the Candle

This was something only slaves would do. But Jesus did it anyway.

Page 41: Lighting the Candle

Peter objected. He did not like the idea of Jesus, the Master, behaving like a slave.

Page 42: Lighting the Candle

But Jesus explained that unless he would let Jesus do this for him, he was not a friend of Jesus.

Page 43: Lighting the Candle

So Peter said, ‘Then give me a whole bath!!’

Page 44: Lighting the Candle

‘No,’ said Jesus. ‘Just you feet!’

Page 45: Lighting the Candle

And that’s what happened

Page 46: Lighting the Candle

After this, Jesus talked with them and told them about many things that would

happen.

Page 47: Lighting the Candle

Some of the things he said

were about what would

happen to the disciples.

Other things about what

would happen before he came

again to the world.

Page 48: Lighting the Candle

Jesus also told them that one of them would betray him.

Page 49: Lighting the Candle

They were upset. They asked each other who it could be.

Page 50: Lighting the Candle

Jesus said, ‘The one who dips his bread into the meat at the same time I do will do this.’

Page 51: Lighting the Candle

Peter was horrified!

Judas dipped his hand into the meat with Jesus.

Page 52: Lighting the Candle

Jesus told them that each one of them would betray him in different ways. Some would run away, some, like Peter, would pretend they never knew Jesus.

Page 53: Lighting the Candle

Jesus told Judas to go and do what he had to do.Judas left the room and went to talk with the priests.

Page 54: Lighting the Candle

Judas left the room and went to talk with the priests.

Page 55: Lighting the Candle

During the meal, Jesus did

something special. It is what we call

‘Communion’ or ‘Eucharist’ or the

‘Last Supper’.

Page 56: Lighting the Candle

Jesus took the bread, gave thanks to God

and broke it. He said: ‘Take this all of you and

eat it. It is my Body that is given for you.’

Page 57: Lighting the Candle

It was special Passover bread without yeast.

Page 58: Lighting the Candle

At the end of the meal, Jesus took a cup that was filled with wine.

Page 59: Lighting the Candle

Jesus gave thanks to God

and blessed the wine.

Page 60: Lighting the Candle

Then Jesus gave the wine to his friends and said, ‘Take

this all of you. It is my blood, the blood of the new

and everlasting promise God has made with this

world to forgive sins. Whenever you

drink it, remember me.

Page 61: Lighting the Candle

When we share Communion together we are remembering Jesus’ wonderful gift. We are remembering, not making Jesus die again. Communion means the community coming together and remembering what Jesus has done for us.

Page 62: Lighting the Candle

Jesus told them that God had made a

special agreement because of the work

Jesus had done on Earth.

He told them that he would not

drink any wine again

until he was with God

in Heaven.

Page 63: Lighting the Candle

After they had finished

the meal they prayed

together. Then they

went out to the Garden

of Gethsemane

.

Page 64: Lighting the Candle

Jesus was put on the cross the next morning and died in the afternoon. BUT that was not the end!!! On the Sunday morning, three women disciples went to the tomb – and found that JESUS WAS ALIVE AGAIN!!
