Basic values of Scripture Union’s Light rangeThese values are intrinsic to all the products and services in the Light range and affect every aspect of the materials: each session, each activity, each piece of writing, each illustration — everything that comes together to create Light.

• The Bible is God-centred. The whole Bible shows us that God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Even little children can have big minds when it comes to thinking about God.

• Children and young people can have a relationship with God by trusting in Jesus Christ, and can love him with all their heart. They can worship and serve him at any age, in ways that suit who they are and all God has given them.

• Biblical faith involves the head (belief), the heart (trust), the hands (action) and hopefully a direction set for life (will). Careful work with children and young people can encourage all-round faith.

• Children and young people can learn in many different, enjoyable ways. Helping them get to grips with the same learning through a variety of activities can be fun, but is also vital for good learning.

• Children and young people can hear God for themselves as they explore the Bible in a group, but also when they open it on their own or with a caring adult. But they need a lot of help.

• Children and young people are naturally very curious. Curiosity fuels their desire to learn. They need the time and space to ask honest questions and to work through the answers with others who love God and know what he says.

Light recognises that children can know and respond to God and does not expect too little or too much from them. Light celebrates every step taken towards and with God, letting the Bible shape our thinking about human nature, our relationship with children and the way in which we minister with and to them. Light values exploration and discovery, fun, feelings and creativity and uses these approaches to inspire children, young people and adults to meet God through the Bible.

Scripture Union is a non-denominational, Christ-centred international movement, founded in 1867, working in partnership with individuals and churches across the world.

Our aim is to use the Bible to inspire children, young people and adults to know God.

Read the Bible passageThink about your own group and situation: the individuals, the leaders, your equipment and facilities. Pray about your group and the individuals within it, and for God to guide you and speak to you as you prepare and lead.

Know what the aim isEach session explores a different Bible passage, using the session aim to help the children discover more about God and respond to him. Each activity has a ‘why’ heading, which contributes to the session aim. Use these aims to help you choose the most appropriate activities for your group.

Choose the most important activityChoose an activity based on the Bible story to enable your group to explore the Bible passage. There will be a ready-to-use option, activities for 3 to 5s and under-3s, and these are marked with a cross icon. Think about your group and choose the activity you think will best suit their learning styles and ages. If you meet for about 20 minutes, you will probably only need this activity.

Choose activities to help the children respond to GodOnce you know which Bible activity you are doing, choose one or more of the activities marked with a heart icon. These include worship ideas and practical ways in which young children can apply the Bible story to their own lives and respond to God about what they have been doing and learning. One of these options will be ready-to-use.

Choose activities to help children learn throughtheir playingPlay is THE way in which young children learn so Bubbles for Leaders gives a range of play-based options, all of which are focused on the Bible story and the aim of the session. Play at any time within a Bubbles session. Add play ideas into the existing routine for your group, have a play-time before or after a Bible-time, use these ideas fl exibly, whenever you wish. One of these options will be ready-to-use.

Don’t forget Bible readingEach session gives suggestions to help pre-readers explore the Bible in their own way, using materials created especially for their age group.

Within the session, each activity has an aim (the ‘WHY’) which contributes to the session aim. You can use these aims to help you choose the most appropriate activities for your group.

Introduction activitiesOnce you know which Bible exploration option you are doing, choose one or more of the Switch on activities to do before your Into the Bible activity. There is always a creative worship activity option; other activities include ones which explore unfamiliar aspects of the Bible passage or introduce concepts in the session aim.

The most important activityChoose one Into the Bible activity to enable yourgroup to explore the Bible passage. Think about the children in your group and choose the activity you think will best suit their learning styles. If you have around 20 minutes for your session, you will probably only need this activity.

Putting it into practice activitiesHaving explored the Bible passage, use one or more of the Living the life activities to help the children remember, respond to and apply what they have learnt. There are also Extra ideas which give you more options.

Learn and rememberThe Learn and remember verse for the series is not always from the Bible passages, but is rather a verse which works on its own and focuses on what we are discovering about God. Because we focus on a different characteristic of God in each series, over a period of time the children will know a collection of verses which will help them know God.
