Section 1: System Introduction

Theory of Operation:The LPR-2S-(1.5,3,5)P-1A is a complete samplingsystem designed to sample light liquid hydrocarbons.Thousands of individual samples are captured andcombined to develop a representative, compositesample of the flowing pipeline.

Operation of the sampling system centers aroundthe following primary components: the LPR-2Sample Pump, the Product Accumulator Vessel, theElectronic Control System, and the Precharge GasVessel. All equipment is mounted on a 2' x 2' struc-tural steel skid. These components are shown in thediagram on the following page.

The sampling system operates on a simple concept. When the system receives a closed contact signalby others, the time delay relay electronic control unitenergizes the system solenoid valve. Energizing thesolenoid valve forces a pneumatic signal into theactuation cylinder of the sample pump, which in turncauses the pump to stroke. When the pumpstrokes, a small sample is displaced into the productaccumulator vessel. Once the solenoid valve is de-energized, the sample pump plunger returns to itsnormal position. This action captures a new sampleinto the pump. When the system receives the nextclosed contact signal, the cycle begins again.

The purpose of the YZ light liquid hydrocarbon sam-pling system is to capture and maintain a represen-tative liquid sample of the pipeline product. Thesampled product is maintained in a liquid phase bythe product accumulator vessel’s free floating pistonand the precharge gas system. In order for thesystem to function properly, pipeline product must besingle phase, liquid product.

By properly adjusting both the sample size and thesample frequency, the sample vessel will fill to 80%capacity at the end of the sample period. Once thesample period is complete, the product within theaccumulator vessel is thoroughly mixed using thepower mixer. A representative sample can then beremoved from the product accumulator vessel usingthe YZ Durasite, a DOT approved constant pressuresample vessel. After removing the remainder of theproduct from the accumulator vessel, the system isthen ready for a new sample period.

Section 2: LPR Sample Pump

The LPR-2P Sample Pump is a positivedisplacement plunger pump designed to mount onthe sampler, refer to page 7. It has an adjustabledisplacement of 0.25 to 1.8 cc and achieves propor-tional-to-flow sampling through a proportional to flowsignal provided from some other flow monitoringdevice.

As the plunger returns upward after completing astroke, the pump chamber fills with product throughthe inlet check valve. The inlet check valve is a darttype valve designed to seat on an o-ring. The inletcheck valve is spring loaded to ensure a positiveseating action after every stroke. When the pumpis actuated by the pneumatic actuation system, theplunger moves downward, displacing productthrough the discharge check valve known as thebalance valve.

The balance valve automatically senses pipelinepressure and adjusts to ensure that product is notallowed to free flow to the product vessel, refer topage 8. When the pipeline pressure is greater thanthe precharge pressure on the accumulator vessel, the balance valve dart is pushed up against the seatand the top head of the balance valve. As the pumpstrokes, the pressure created in the pump chamberforces the balance valve dart off the seat, allowingproduct to be pumped to the accumulator vessel.Once the pump completes its stroke, the pressureacross the balance valve equalizes and the dart isreturned to a sealing position by its spring.

In the event that the accumulator vessel prechargepressure is greater than the pipeline pressure, thebalance valve dart and seat are pushed apart by theproduct pressure in the accumulator vessel. In thissituation the check valve wafer located between thebalance valve and the sample pump acts as a backcheck to prevent the escape of product previouslycaptured in the accumulator vessel. As the pumpstrokes, the pressure created in the pump chamberforces the check valve wafer off the seat, allowingproduct to be pumped to the accumulator vessel.Once the pump completes its stroke, the pressureacross the check valve equalizes and the wafer isreturned to a sealing position by its spring.

Section 3: Five-way Cross Assembly

The Five-way cross assembly is located on thefront of the skid and includes the following items:product inlet tubing fitting, pressure gauge, reliefvalve, rob valve, accumulator vessel isolation valve/discharge tubing fitting, and the five-way cross, refer to page 10.

The pressure gauge is used during normal opera-tion to indicate the pressure within the accumulatorvessel. During start-up and troubleshooting proce-dures it is used in conjunction with the accumulatorvessel isolation valve to check pump performance.

The YZ relief valve is a reseating type valve which isfactory set to relieve at 1800 psi. Also incorporatedinto the relief valve design is a positive indicationfeature which indicates that it has relieved. If thesystem reaches a pressure greater than the reliefvalve setting, the resulting release of productpushes the black relief valve indicator outside therelief valve body. This informs the system operatorduring his next system check that an over pressurecondition has occurred. The indicator is reset bypushing it back into the relief valve body.

The rob valve is a YZ needle valve which is used toremove product from the accumulator vessel at theend of the sample period. This valve is normallyclosed.

The accumulator vessel isolation valve is used toisolate the accumulator vessel from the rest of theproduct carrying portion of the sampling system. This valve is normally open.

The YZ Product Accumulator Vessel is designed tomaintain a composite sample in the liquid phase. This is accomplished by using a free-floating pistondesign and an inert precharge gas system, refer topage 12. As product is collected in the accumulatorvessel, the precharge gas system maintains aconstant pressure on top of the vessel piston. Ifthis pressure is at least 100 to 150 psi above thevapor pressure of the product being sampled, thesampled product will be prevented from flashing tothe vapor phase.

Product enters the cylinder through the head in thebottom of the cylinder. This head is the accumula-tor vessel product head. The precharge gas iscommunicated to the accumulator vessel throughthe precharge head, which is located on the top ofthe accumulator cylinder.

The actuator assembly is located on the top of theaccumulator cylinder and serves two functions, refer to page 13.The first is to provide mixing of thesampled product by moving the mixing disc up anddown within the product portion of the accumulatorcylinder. This is done by introducing pneumaticpressure to one side of the pneumatic mixer pistonassembly and then by applying pressure to theopposite side of the pneumatic mixer piston assem-bly.

The second function of the actuator assembly is toprovide indication of the amount of product collectedwithin the vessel. This is shown locally on themagnetic volume scale mounted on the actuatorassembly cylinder.

Section 5: Precharge Gas System

The purpose of the precharge system is to keep thesampled product in a liquid phase. This is accom-plished by maintaining a precharge pressure on topof the accumulator vessel piston. The prechargevessel provides additional volume to the prechargesystem, which minimizes the pressure increasewithin the product accumulator as it fills.

Prior to placing the sampler into service, it is neces-sary that the precharge system be charged to apressure at least 100 psi greater than the productvapor pressure, refer to page 15. For example, if aproduct with a vapor pressure of 300 psi is beingsampled, a precharge pressure of 400 psi would berequired. Servicing the precharge vessel is doneusing the isolation valve located on top of theprecharge vessel. Please note that the valveisolates the precharge system from the atmo-sphere, and does not separate the prechargevessel from the accumulator vessel. Also, theprecharge vessel is shipped with 10 psi of blanketpressure.

Section 6: Actuation/Mixing Power Source (PNEU)

The function of the 80-100 psi instrument air supplyis to provide an actuation power source for thesample pump and the accumulator vessel mixingsystem, refer to page 17. Constructed as anintegral component of the entire sampling system, the actuation system is pressure tested at thefactory prior to shipment.

The instrument air source is connected to a teewelded onto the sample skid. It is this tee that splitsthe pneumatic source between sample pumpactuation and accumulator vessel mixing. The “actuation” leg of the tee is piped to a pressureregulator (factory set at 38 psi) and on to a three-way explosion proof solenoid valve. This solenoidvalve is normally closed and is mounted on theexplosion proof enclosure provided with the sampleskid. It is opened when energized by the samplerelectronic control package. Opening the solenoidvalve allows pneumatic pressure to actuate thesample pump. The actuation tubing to the pump isfactory installed.

The “mixing” leg of the welded tee is tubed directlyto the inlet of the accumulator mixing valve. Theinlet is located on the right side of the switch. Themixing switch is a three position switch, with thecenter position being the off position. When themixing switch is moved to the up position, themixing disc is moved up in the product accumula-tor. Moving the mixing switch to the down positioncauses the product accumulator mixing disc tomove down in the product accumulator. Thesample in the accumulator vessel is mixed bymoving the mixing handle alternately up and thendown. Four or five passes through the sampleshould provide sufficient mixing.

Section 7: Electronic Control for Pneumatic Systems (-1B)

The electronic control package provided with yoursampling system consists of a solid state TimeDelay Relay (TDR). The TDR converts a continu-ous voltage signal into a 3 second voltage outputeverytime a contact closure occurs. This 3 secondduration allows sufficient time to stroke the samplepump and retrieve a single sample.

The control package requires you to provide 24VDC at terminals 1 and 3. You are also required toprovide dry contacts at terminals 3 and 6 in order tostroke the pump. All electronics are housed inexplosion proof enclosures and are rated for use inClass I, Division 1, Groups C and D hazardouslocations, refer to page 19.

Section 8: Installation/Start-up/Operation(LPR-2S-(1.5,3,5)P-1A)Skid InstallationThe skid should be located as close as possible tothe pipeline. Four 5/8” diameter holes are providedto mount the skid to a concrete slab, metal skid, etc.

Product Loop1/4" stainless steel tubing should be field routedfrom the pipeline sample probe to the pump porttagged “product in”. Likewise, 1/4" stainless steeltubing should be field routed from the pump porttagged “product loop” back to a downstream port inthe pipeline. Care should be taken in routing thistubing to prevent traps, long runs, etc. A pressuredrop of 2-3 psi (min) should be present between thepipeline connections.

Electrical Connections24 VDC, electrical power should be connected tothe left side opening of the skid electrical enclosure. The power wiring should be connected to the wirestagged “24VDC”. The hot wire should be connectedto the black system wire. The neutral wire shouldbe connected to the white system wire, refer topage 19.

The meter contacts to control the system should beconnected to the right side opening of the skidelectrical enclosure. The wiring for the metercontacts should be connected to the grey wireswhich are tagged “meter contacts”. All electricalconnections are designed for ½” NPT conduit.

Precharge Gas InstallationConnect the precharge gas source (normallynitrogen) to the isolation valve 1/4" NPT connectionlocated on top of the precharge vessel. Open theisolation valve. Fill the precharge vessel with gasuntil the pressure in the vessel is 100 to 150 psiabove the vapor pressure of the product to besampled. Once the vessel is filled, close theisolation valve and remove the precharge gassource. Leak test all connections between theprecharge vessel and the product accumulatorvessel.

Pneumatic SupplyA 1/4" connection is provided for a continuouspneumatic supply (80-100 psi). The necessaryregulator, solenoid valve, etc. is provided with thesampling skid.

Sampler Control Set-upCalculate the pump setting using the followingformula:Pump Setting = D x E B x CWhere, B = Average Flow rate (Gal/day or BBL/day) C = Sample period (days) D = Metered volume per pulse (Gal/pulse or BBL/pulse) E = 80% sample accumulator volume (cc)For 1.5 gallon accumulators, E = 4,750 ccFor 3 gallon accumulators, E = 8,750 ccFor 5 gallon accumulators, E = 16,750 cc

The pump setting must be within range of 0.25 to1.8 cc / stroke.

Pump Sample SizeThe sample size of the Sample Pump is adjustablefrom 0.25 to 1.8 cc/stroke. The sample grab size ofthe pump is adjusted by loosening the lock/seal nuton top of the pump and turning the volume adjust-ment screw in to decrease the sample volume orout to increase the sample volume. Once the newsample size has been set, the lock/seal nut shouldbe retightened.

Sample Pump PrimingBefore the pump begins normal operation afterinitial installation or maintenance, the sample pumpmust be purged of all air in the sample chamber. The purge valve on the sample pump is used toevacuate the air from the chamber and to makesure the pump is liquid-packed. If the pump is notpurged before being placed into operation, it will notfunction properly.

To purge the pump, open the purge valve located onthe side of the Balance Valve. The product supplyvalve can then be opened to allow pipeline productto purge the air within the pump. Once productbegins exiting the purge valve, close the purgevalve. The sample pump is now ready to beginoperation.

Product Line TestClose the isolation valve located on the bottom ofthe Five-Way Cross Assembly, refer to page 10.Stroke the sample pump until the system pressurereaches 1800 psi on the Five-Way Cross AssemblyGauge. The pressure should hold steady betweenpump strokes. Once the system is at 1800 psi, leak test all connections. Once the system hasbeen tested, open the isolation valve located on thebottom of the Five-Way Cross Assembly.

Sample Removal ProcedureAfter mixing the sample, attach a DuraSite, refer topage 23, constant pressure portable sample vesselto the rob valve located on the Five-way CrossAssembly. The portable sample vessel must alsobe precharged to 100-150 psi above the vaporpressure of the product. Open the rob valve toremove the product from the cylinder. Close therob valve and remove the DuraSite from the robvalve. Open the rob valve to flare any remainingproduct from the Product Accumulator Vessel.Close the rob valve. Raise the mode switch to the“sample” position. Rotate the diverter switch to the“sample” position.

Section 9 - DuraSite Portable Sample Vessel Instructions

Purpose: The DuraSite Portable Sample Vessel permits theuser to remove a liquid or gas hydrocarbon sample from apipeline or a sampling device. This is accomplished withoutchanging the pressure of the product or exposing it to acontaminant fluid. If properly used and maintained theDuraSite will provide many years of safe, accurate and cleansampling.

Use: The DuraSite is a very safe device to use. As with anyequipment dealing with flammable products, it is mandatorythat a good, thorough operator training procedure beestablished prior to use.

Typical use of the cylinder would be as follows:

Step 1: (In The Lab) Connect a regulated inert gas supply tothe pre-charge valve. The product valve should be open. Bycarefully controlling the pre-charge valve and the regulator, thecylinder can be slowly charged with pre-charge gas (NOTE:This should be done slowly to prevent slamming the pistondown to the opposite end). The pressure on the pre-chargepressure gauge should be brought to a reading of 10-50 psiabove the expected pressure of the product in the field . Closethe pre-charge valve and disconnect the gas supply. Checkthe pre-charge valve, relief device, and the pre-charge pres-sure gauge for leaks. Any leaks should be stopped beforecontinuing. The vessel should be placed in a padded carryingcase and made ready for field use.Proceed to EITHER Step 2, or Step 3 as required for yourapplication.

STEP 2: FOR COLLECTION OF SAMPLE VIA SPOT SAMPLEOR FROM COMPOSITE ACCUMULATOR VESSEL.

2a: Connect the product end of the pre-charged samplevessel to the product supply. (Sampler product removal valve,or Pipeline sample probe)NOTE: the pre-charge pressure gauge reading should begreater than the product supply pressure reading. If not, repeat Step 1 above.

2b: Once the vessel is connected to the product supply, it isnecessary to vent a small amount of product prior to filling thevessel. This assures fresh product and removes any air orgas when dealing with liquids. This can be done byloosening the product purge valve a very small amount untilthe product is purged. After thorough purging, the productpurge valve should be tightened.

2c: The product pressure gauge reading should be 10-50 psibelow the pre-charge pressure gauge reading. By carefullyopening the pre-charge valve, the pressure becomesequalized, then begins to drop below the product pressure. The pre-charge valve should be carefully controlled so as tonot vent the pre-charge gas too fast.

2d: When the cylinder becomes a maximum of 80% full (seevolume indicator), all valves should be closed. The productconnection is slowly broken in order to vent any trappedproduct. After vessel removal, all connections should bechecked for leaks and the pre-charge and product valve portscapped to prevent leakage.

2e: Pack the DuraSite in appropriate carrying case to meetD.O.T. guideline, with D.O.T. paperwork and transport to labfor analysis.

STEP 3: FOR DIRECT CONNECTION TOSAMPLER.

3a: Connect the sampler discharge port to the product inletport to the DuraSite using 1/8" stainless steel tubing.

3b: (Gas sampling) Connect the pre-charge port to theDuraSite to the pipeline for pre-charge pressure (Proceed tostep 3d), or configured like the liquid sample applicationbelow. (Step 3c)

3c: (Light sampling) Pre-charge the DuraSite as indicated inStep 1, then install a pressure relief valve to the pre-chargeport and open the pre-charge valve on the DuraSite. (Thepressure relief valve should have a relief pressure setting ofapproximately 100 psi above line pressure.)

3d: Open the product inlet valve of the DuraSite and the purgevalve on the sampler. Next open the purge valve on the productend of the DuraSite and allow product to purge all lines andconnections out.

3e: Close purge valves and begin sample cycle.

3f: At the end of sample cycle, close product inlet valve on theDuraSite and remove the DuraSite. Pack the DuraSite inappropriate carrying case to meet D.O.T. guideline, with D.O.T.paperwork and transport to lab for analysis.

Step 4: (In The Lab) Prior to analysis, the product should bemixed. This is accomplished simply and efficiently byinverting the cylinder end-over-end, causing the mixing ball tofall through the product. Approximately 10-12 trips of themixing ball through the product assures a homogenoussolution.

Step 5: The regulated pre-charge gas should be reconnectedto the pre-charge side of the cylinder. The pre-charge gassupply should remain open during analysis.

Step 6: Purging a small amount of product from the vesselremoves unmixed product from the tee, relief device, gauge, etc. The unit can now be connected to a chromatograph andthe product analyzed.

Step 7: After analyzing, the remainder of the product shouldbe dumped and the vessel properly cleaned. Normalcleaning can be accomplished by rinsing the product end witha petroleum solvent and flushing with acetone. If a morethorough cleaning is required, the vessel should bedisassembled.

WARNING: A portable sample vessel should never be filledto more than 80%. This allows a 20% pre-charge cushion toabsorb thermal expansion of the product.

Shipping: Extreme care should be taken when preparing avessel for shipment. Both valves should be capped to preventpossible leakage. The vessel should be placed in asnug-fitting, well-padded and durable case. All applicableDOT regulations should be adhered to.
