Anniversary crane comes from Haiger
The crane is deployed at a well-known
steel mill in Peine for the replacement of
electrodes on two different electric arc
furnaces where it will be in use permanently
and will be exposed to maximum loads. In add-
ition, it is to be used to carry out repair and
maintenance operations on the furnaces and
input conveyors.
Flexible deploymentThe slewing jib crane has a load carrying
capacity of 3.2 tons at an outreach of 6,550 mm
and is telescopically extendable from 6,270 mm
to a height of 8,270 mm. In order to meet these
requirements, the designing engineers at
VETTER developed a sophisticated concept.
Challenging requirementsThe telescopability at the stated load was a
very interesting challenge to the statics of the
crane. However, the integration of the cra-
ne into the intended production process had
to be taken into account, too. In this case, it
is important to ensure a signal transmissi-
on and monitor-ing of the individual slew-
ing ranges as well as the release of exter-
nal conditions (e. g. release of the overhead
travelling crane crane for the traversing of the
slewing jib crane, activation release of the fur-
naces). The control system of the crane has to
communicate faultlessly with the controls of
the systems and equipment provided by the
customer in order to prevent any accidents.
Successful as a teamFor the company Peiner Träger, the purchase
of the new crane means a signifi cant reduction
of standby times since the gantry crane will
not be blocked for the exchange of electrodes
On the 10th of February of this year, a very special crane was completed at the newly built
production facilities in Haiger. The 75,000th slewing jib crane is a milestone in the more than
120 years old corporate history of VETTER, and it features technical fi nesses that go far
beyond standard day-to-day capabilities.

or for maintenance operations. The employees
of VETTER are very proud of “their 75,000th
slewing jib crane”, since all departments have
demonstrated their expertise and made the
development and production of this crane
possible in the fi rst place – a fantastic
achievement!
Postscript: When all VETTER licensees are in-
cluded, more than 100,000 VETTER slewing jib
cranes have already been manufactured world-
wide!

Just before the Olympic Games, VETTER Krantechnik delivered four
column-mounted slewing jib cranes for the “Peak 2 Peak Gondola” in
the Canadian winter sports resort of Whistler Mountain. A deployment
under particularly harsh conditions and extremely demanding safety
regulations.
Rescue cranes for the Olympics - to be present is what counts!

Normally, the crane systems of VETTER
are used worldwide in order to support
production processes and to make them
more efficient, i. e. to reduce the operating costs.
Thus, most of the time it is the economic compon-
ent that is paramount to the capital expenditure.
In the case of the four slewing jib cranes supplied
by VETTER, mounted in pairs on the pillars of the
Olympic gondola cable-car in Canada, it is an
entirely different matter.
On the safe side in emergenciesThe slewing jib cranes have a special task: They
will only be used in an emergency, for example
in the event of an accident of the cable-car. Then
they will lift a rescue device to the cables which is
positioned on the two 65 m high pillars. The rescue
and recovery equipment will then pull the gon-
dolas safely to the rescue platform. Furthermore,
the rare operation of the cranes leads to special
requirements on the technology. Extremely long
downtime periods under harsh environmental
conditions are a particular challenge for the
crane manufacturer.
Special solutions for extreme conditionsThe high alpine location at more than 2,000 m
above sea level means that the crane operation
must be able to bear up against storms with a
wind velocity of 75 to 88 km/h. Accordingly, the
drive mechanisms and brakes were confi gured
with particularly robust dimensions. On account
of extreme weather conditions and temperature
fl uctuations from -30 to +40 degrees Celsius,

Technical specifi cations
The rescue and recovery device is lifted Crane is locked in the rest position
all drive mechanisms and control systems were
equipped with outage period heating systems.
They prevent the formation of condensation and
also ensure the viscosity of the lubricants used.
Protection regardless of wind and weatherAn additional weather protection package in-
cludes an UV-resistant neoprene cable for the
main power supply line as well as special bearing
covers and bearing seals and weatherproof pro-
tective bags for the storage of hoisting gear, drive
elements and control panels. The electric chain
hoists are equipped with a rack and pinion travel-
ling gear so that they can still be moved even in
case of an icy or snow-covered crane track.
Well prepared for a quick deploymentThe extremely high wind forces can result in
egomotions of the cable-car construction. For
this reason, the opposing slewing jib cranes
are firmly locked in place with each other in the
rest position and the slewing drive is electrically
secured in this position. Since the slewing jib
cranes must always be ready for operation in
an emergency, their power supply is ensured by an emergency, their power supply is ensured by
means of emergency backup generators.
Fortunately, the VETTER cranes did not have
to be used during the Olympic Games.
An uncommon challenge for VETTER which it
passed with flying colours!

Safely with VETTER in the fi eld of plant engineering
T E C H N I C A L E X P E R T I S E
This year, VETTER was pleased about two
very special orders. For the Olkiluoto (OL 3)
power plant, which is currently being
built by the French power plant engineering
firm AREVA in Finland, VETTER obtained an
order for 66 slewing jib cranes, all of which
were delivered by February 2010. Due to the
high safety standards at nuclear power plants,
many particularities in terms of specific quality
features and in regard to the documentation
had to be taken into account here.
Excellent service at the highest levelIn close cooperation with the AREVA engineers
and the construction site in Olkiluoto, the
cranes were manufactured within the agreed
delivery period and handed over to the cus-
tomer on schedule. Furthermore, VETTER will
install and commission the cranes at the
nuclear power plant. On account of the very
stringent safety requirements, this task also
requires maximum diligence and performance.
The installation of the equipment is sched-
uled to take place during the second half of
2010.
A major order in a demanding environmentAnother major project of particular significance
is the order for the French electric utility EDF
which involves the installation of cranes at
six diesel-burning power plants that are being
built on the islands of La Réunion, Martinique
and Corsica, among others. They will ensure
the electric power and heat supply in these
locations. In order to realize this task, a
large number of slewing jib cranes and gantry
cranes with a lightweight mode of construction
(< 10 t) are needed at each power plant.
Achieving one’s aim through close cooperationVETTER received the commission to supply the
entire crane systems. The special features of
this project are the complexity of the turn-key
plant engineering and also the almost maritime
application conditions because of the geo-
graphic location of the planned power plants.
It was crucial here to jointly find customer-
specific solutions that could meet the high
demands of the client.
Once again, VETTER was able to prove its
expertise on this project.

In this project, the challenge was to satisfy
specifi c demands in terms of materials
handling and to fi nd a symbiosis of technol-
ogy and architecture that is in harmony with
the aesthetically pleasing environment of the
yachting club. During the research for a suit-
able vendor, the operator immediately came
across VETTER. Its eminent position in the mar-
ket segment of industrial slewing jib cranes
and the long-standing experience in the design
of boat cranes secured the order for VETTER.
Technology and architecture in tune“The collaboration started in a very unconven-
tional manner”, explains Rainer Büdenbender

fore his retirement. A simple sketch by the opera-

Added to this were special customer requests,
such as nominal load (32 t), exceptional load
(40 t) and the desire to lift boats with a width
of up to 9 m. Safety and a high level of avai-
lability were further important parameters. In
addition, the crane was supposed to blend in
with the maritime terrain. The result was a filig-
ree structure which today represents a veritable
eye-catcher for anyone interested in tech-
nology.
Functionality and safetyLoads are taken up by clipping belts into the
hook block of the hoisting devices, which
then ensure the secure take-up of the boat.

of measurements whether all four lifting
units are loaded equally. A safety device au-
tomatically deactivates the transportation
procedure in case of an overload. If all safe-
ty parameters are okay, the crane swings the
boat to a pre-determined handover position.
An auxiliary crane is mounted on the jib,
equipped with a small hoist. The load carrying
capacity amounts to 1,000 kg. With this device,
sailing masts are set up and laid down.
With VETTER around the worldA travel report by Rainer Büdenbender
The big VETTER boat crane in Croatia is located in the Yachting Club Seget, in the vicinity of the towns of Trogir and Split. A marina which is almost unique in Croatia. It stands out because of its lavish and modern facilities, top-notch service and a large fleet of vessels for charter, including catamarans, sail boats and motorboats.
The marina is the perfect starting point for a
cruise to the picturesque islands and attractive
coastal towns and villages along the eastern
Adriatic. This long coastal strip is one of the
favourite areas for sailors and motorboating
enthusiasts in the entire Mediterranean Sea.
World Heritage Site TrogirOf all the towns in Dalmatia, Trogir, the
municipality directly adjacent to the Yachting
Club Seget, has best preserved its medieval
character. A museum town where the past and
the present face each other in their extremes,
and which was nominated a World Heritage
Site by UNESCO for this reason.
About tears and starsA boating trip from Trogir to the Kornati
islands is another excursion not to be missed.
The exaltation of George Bernhard Shaw about
the islands speaks volumes: “On the last day
of creation, God decided to crown his work.
And thus he created the Kornati islands from
a whiff of tears and stars.”
Technology in its most beautiful formThe successful collaboration with Boatic
Yachting GmbH is a reference for VETTER which
is quite impressive. VETTER owes the successful
execution primarily to its long-time experience
in the construction of industrial and boat cranes.
The combination of sophisticated technology
and shapely architecture created a structure in
a class of its own.
Local specialtiesThe Kornati archipelago was declared a na-
tional park in 1980. Some of the islands are
uninhabited, others are the refuge of hermits
and clans who cultivate the islands. In the
local knobas (restaurants), the greatest
variety of Croatian specialties is served, but
above all fresh fish, prepared either on the
grill or in pekas.
Croatian hospitalityThe hosts on the islands sometimes have a
rather adventurous appearance. Like Ivan,
the recluse with his helpers who lives in the
Stinjiva bay on the main island of Kornat. For
Ivan, hospitality comes first. Upon our arrival,
his first question is: “What and when do you
want to eat? I need to know when I have to
start cooking.”
The islands of the sunAnother highlight is the sailing trip to the is-
land of Hvar from Trogir. The island is known
as the sunny isle and is famous for its mild
climate. Hvar is one of Croatia’s most
beautiful islands with a Northern coast line
full of inviting bays and an impressively steep
Southern coast which is an insiders’ tip among
hobby climbers.
Bird’s eye view on the VETTER craneThus, VETTER Krantechnik hopes that the boat
crane in Trogir – which, incidentally, can al-
ready be spotted by a trained eye during the
approach to the international airport in Split –
will get siblings in many other existing or yet
to be built marinas and yacht harbours.

The new MEISTERThe MEISTER BG1200 is an advanced version of the most frequently built standard
column-mounted slewing jib crane. With this new assembly, an even larger performance
spectrum opens up for this crane type.
With the MEISTER BG1200, VETTER
can now cover a larger spectrum of
applications in the standard crane
segment. By virtue of its high load carrying
capacity and expansive outreach, the new
MEISTER BG1200 is also very popular as a boat
crane. Where previously slewing jib cranes
of the BOSS type had to be used, now the
MEISTER can prove its superiority.
Fast delivery periodThe BOSS crane type uses so-called ball-bearing
slewing rings between the jib and the column.
These connections are also used in the wind
turbine industry and are in high demand due to
the boom in this industry. This makes the cra-
ne more expensive and contributes to delivery
times of four to six months. A time period which
is definitely too long for many applications, but
more than enough rea-son for our engineers to
further develop the MEISTER crane type: A cra-
ne of the MEISTER BG1200 type can be installed
on site after as little as eight to ten weeks.
Attractive priceThe MEISTER BG1200 is a standard slewing jib
crane which is assembled primarily from pre-
fabricated components that are produced on
automated equipment (welding robots) – this
saves time and money! The use of low-priced
series components reduces the costs. With the
new MEISTER BG1200, our customers benefi t
from very attractive prices and short delivery
times.

About 230 employees produce technol-
ogically sophisticated gearing solutions
for trains all over the world at the new
Voith Turbo factory. At the moment, the plant
is building axle gears for 26 high-speed trains
which are expected to transport millions of
passengers in China reliably with top speeds up
to 380 km/h in the future.
Effective fl ow of material as top imperativeEvery minute counts, given these requirements!
Attention must be paid to absolute effi ciency,
particularly in respect of the fl ow of material
and the individual work processes. Voith cannot
afford dead times, as they tend to occur when one
depends on a single gantry crane. For this rea-
son, the gearing manufacturer now counts on 22
slewing jib cranes made by VETTER Krantechnik.
Assembly of the MEISTERThe column-mounted slewing jib cranes of the
MEISTER type are used for loading the gearing
In early 2010, Voith Turbo opened its new factory in Heidenheim-Mergelstetten.
Now, 22 VETTER slewing jib cranes ensure optimised work fl ows and an effi cient manufacturing
process without dead times at the German gearing manufacturer.
components with a weight of up to 3 tons into
various drilling, milling or grinding machines.
The new cranes were installed with so-called
CompactAnchors. In this fastening system, a
pipe section with connection fl ange is insert-
ed into the crane foundation, and the crane is
later simply screwed onto it. This method is fast
and clean and has the added advantage that
no bothersome anchor bolts protrude from the
factory fl oor later on during the subsequent
course of the construction phase.
Double jibs – faster operating timeWhere space is at a premium, it is also pos-
sible to install two jibs on one column, as it
happens in the feeding of a turning lathe/
mill-ing machine. The operator picks up a
blank with the jib 1 and drives it to a parking
position in front of the machine. Using the
jib 2, he takes the fi nished workpiece from
the machine and initially pivots it to the side.
With the jib 1, he then places the parked
blank in the machine. While the latter is
being machined, the operator can rework the
fi nished workpiece (remove burs from it), deposit
it and immediately pick up a new blank again.
This effective mode of operation increases the
machine running time by 5%. “We estimate
that the payback period for the second
jib will amount to less than two years”, says
Wolfgang Hütter, the production supervisor at
the Voith factory in Mergelstetten.
Quality made in GermanyThe VETTER slewing jib crane strategy “A slewing
jib crane for every workplace!” was successfully
implemented in the Voith project. The optimised
value creation achieved in this way is a pre-
requisite for success at the industrial location
Germany.

and through dialogue. In this way, our
customers receive first-hand information.
During the entire training period, they also
have the opportunity to turn to qualified
specialists when they have questions about
crane technology.
Benefits from continuing educationThe seminars offered are intended to build
upon an existing knowledge base and to
deepen the expertise of the individual deal-
ers. Through continuous professional train-
ing and our openness with information,
we ensure the acquisition of additional
qualifications for our customers and thereby,
ultimately, the decisive edge in terms of
advice.
Success through a variety of topicsTraining courses regularly take place in Haiger.
The main topics are, for example, the multi-
faceted application possibilities of the slewing
jib crane and gantry crane systems. The cor-
rect use of the CraneConfigurator is always a
sought-after topic, too. In general, we are inter-
ested in a constructive exchange with our
customers – suggestions and training needs
can be communicated to us at any time.
Making new contactsOf course, a pleasant side effect is the
cultivation of contacts: Our customers get to
know their contacts at VETTER personally or
may deepen existing contacts. After all, a good
partnership does not only live on the product
alone, but in particular on humans!

Happily going into retirement
E M P L O Y E E S
At the end of March this year, our sales director Rainer Büdenbender took
his well-deserved retirement after 37 years of service. He joined VETTER as a sales
representative in September 1973.
Rainer Büdenbender is one of the vet-
erans in the crane engineering field. He
is an expert in crane technology with
more than 40 years of professional experience
in crane construction. Since 2006, he has also
been a member of the management board of
the company. Due to his experience and human
qualities, he enjoyed great respect and esteem
among customers, suppliers and employees.
With his sales skills, he contributed signifi-
cantly to the success of VETTER Krantechnik.
In his role as authorized crane expert,
Mr. Büdenbender will continue to be active for
VETTER and thus maintain a good number of
customer contacts.
Qualifi ed succession by expertsHis successors are Stefan Müller, authorized
officer and domestic sales manager, and Jörg
Schachtschneider, export manager. They have
been working at VETTER since 1983 and 1984,
respectively, and are also experts in crane
technology with outstanding knowledge of mar-
kets and products. With Wilfried Rode, we were
able to recruit an additional proven expert in the
crane and hoist industry to strengthen our sales
team. Since February 1, 2010, he has been res-
ponsible for the business area ‘large and special
cranes’ and also for the project department.
Celebratory farewellIn a ceremony, the Vetter family, the senior
management and the employees of the com-
pany thanked Rainer Büdenbender for the ex-
ceptionally productive and successful collab-
oration over many decades and wished him
all the best, especially good health, for his
imminent retirement.

CraneConfi gurator
With the opening of the Haiger location in
September 2007, VETTER invested in the con-
struction of a new and forward-looking crane
factory. In order to also meet the requirements
of the growing market with respect to logis-
tics, the crane specialist is now expanding the
Haiger factory with a new hall offering a total
usable surface area of 1,500 m².
A clear logistic advantageThe new building at the Haiger crane factory is
to be completed at the beginning of July and
will be used as a logistics area in the future. The
excellent location of the factory immediately
adjacent to the A 45 freeway already guaran-
tees VETTER clear advantages in terms of trans-
portation and delivery. With the extension, the
company now also optimises the conditions for
the internal and external flow of materials and
increases its storage capacity as well.
Investment in the futureThe 25 m wide, 60 m long and 8 m high hall
at the latest VETTER location offers enough
space to allow logistic processes to be operated
smoothly. An investment which contributes to
optimal work conditions, a consistently high-
grade product quality as well as an efficient
work flow. That is exactly what customers have
always been used to from VETTER.
