December Program

December LifeTimers Gathering — Dec 17

Following what has become a tradition of late, our December program will be provided by our own Randy Edwards and Daniel Zamora. We will have beautiful music, singing, fun and laughter as we celebrate the Christmas season.

Our luncheon this year is being catered by Spice of Life, and our menu will include: Holiday red and green salad with sun-dried cranberries;

pan seared breast of chicken with leeks, mushrooms; seasonal vegetables; bread and butter; and trays of assorted sweets. If that doesn’t get your mouth to watering, I don’t know what will.

Be sure and wear your Christmas attire and come join us for a time of fun and fellowship.

LifeTimers meet at 11:00 AM on Thursday, December 17th in Maresh Hall.

I remember well the first round of Star Wars movies.

Though they were quite young when the first one came out, my two sons were soon hooked. By the time the second episode was released, the oldest was infatuated and the younger imitated his brother. Our home teemed with myriad Star Wars toys, apparel, bed linens and posters.

Now, I have three grandsons who have caught on to the force of the marketing explosion and plethora of new Star Wars toys. One hasn’t even been allowed to see the original trilogy, nor the second round of Star Wars movies, but he has the pjs, light sabers and characters to play with. My oldest son already has tickets to see the new movie (the 7th one!) with his boys and they’re going a second time to take us!

Fortunately, I was as enamored of the movies as they were—they were similar to the Westerns I grew up watching. The classic battle between the good guys and the bad guys always fascinated me, and besides all of the spectacular special effects, I think that’s what appeals to most fans of the movies.

When Obi-Wan-Kenobi, the wise Jedi master and mentor to Luke Skywalker, credits “The Force” for his powers and he tells Luke, “The Force will be with you, always.” His implication is that Luke would succeed as he worked alongside the power of the Force.

As entertaining as this is, I pray my grandsons will someday seek the power of the true Force—the one Christ promised his disciples and us in John 14:26. He told them, “…the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” The Holy Spirit is the God-force within us, empowering us, teaching us and guiding us through this life.

This season and into the new year, I hope that the Force is truly with you.

Leighton Steward Bio

The editor took a vacation, and the November edition of the LifeTimers newsletter was not published. To partially correctly this oversight, we are including the biography of our November speaker here. H. Leighton Steward is a professional geologist who has been studying global climate change and its causes for several years. While the public’s interest in climate change is high, Leighton has realized the need for a book for non-scientist citizens so they can make informed decisions or interpretations of the often disparate sound-bytes that come from the media. His background includes early research of the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico, an advisory board membership at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University, and the current chairmanship of the Institute of the Study of Earth and Man at Southern Methodist University. He has received numerous awards for his past environmental endeavors. His book Fire, Ice and Paradise probes into the history of Earth’s climate and its old and current atmosphere. It is available on Amazon.com.
