Dear Members:

the board of Governors is requesting your approval on three bylaw amendments that we believe will help stimulate an increase in new members. they are as follows: (i) increase the amount of potential buyers of homes in st. andrews, (ii) permit members who have been unable to sell their homes the opportunity to lease them for an extra year and (iii) give long term members of the Club the opportunity to stay members of the Club after they sell their homes. We encourage you to vote in favor of all the amendments prior to the special Meeting of the Membership on september 25 at 4:00 p.m. in the st. andrews Room. as always, the entire board is available to answer any questions you may have regarding the proposed changes and our contact information is available in this publication and online.

it is important to communicate that for the fourth year in a row your board of Governors, Craig Martin, C.o.o./General Manager and his professional staff have put together a fiscal budget that ensures NO Dues & fees increases while services and amenities continue to exceed our expectations as members.

With the majority of the membership approving the purchase and installation of new air conditioning units earlier this summer, the appropriate permits have been obtained and we are currently in the installation phase and plan to complete the job by the end of september.

the kitchen renovation has been completed and we look forward to the Gallery resuming operations by Labor Day. the damage uncovered during the renovation were as expected, resulting in no additional expenses.

Refurbishment of the Ladies’ Card Room is well underway with new wall coverings installed and carpet delivery expected in the coming days and should be open for card play by mid-september. You can also expect to see new fitness Center equipment and a new arrangement of existing equipment to allow for more room on the floor and in between the machines.

as we wrap up the summer season we trust you have made all of your hurricane preparedness plans and want to remind you to call the Club’s hurricane hotline at 1-(888)-740-3044 for updates pertaining to the Club operations.

Dear Members:

We definitely have another great season of activities and events ahead of us! Many of your old favorites as well as innovative new ones. Don’t miss the festivities planned over Labor Day Weekend or any of the fabulous events scheduled this season. Get dressed up for the Monster Mash Halloween Bash in October and reserve November 12th for the Fall Social. We’ve also added a monthly Kid’s Club (details on page 5).

I would like to welcome Shannon Fitzpatrick as our new Director of Catering. Be sure to stop by her office to welcome her and find out how she can assist you in celebrating your special occasions. In addition, our seasonal staff will be returning mid- to late October as we get into full swing for the start of the season!

A recent national survey of private Club general managers asked them to rate the most important issue identified by prospective members. The top answer was “Well Managed.” I am very fortunate to work with a great Board of Governors, strong committee support group, and a highly engaged and loyal professional team to ensure St. Andrews remains well managed.

We should caution, though, that being too metric-centric and managing only by the numbers can result in missing the larger goal - member satisfaction. Our focus is to remain vigilant on member satisfaction and ensure that our Club facilities, service and product delivery are the Best of the Best. This will ensure member satisfaction is our number one goal, balanced with running the business as efficiently and effectively as possible to accomplish our objectives. We must appreciate and focus on the need to budget for the mission - not change the mission to suit the budget. I have presented a budget plan to the finance committee and will soon provide a copy to the Board. Our ability to balance the needs and desires of our members’ satisfaction with prudent and measurable financial success is one that I am proud of since my arrival four years ago.

As we enter the last few months of our fiscal year, we continue to realize a measurable positive bottom line to budget plan. I realize in this challenging economic time that we must provide value and protect your interests and investments at St. Andrews. I am excited to work with the Long Range Planning Committee to focus on our five-year goals of ensuring our facilities are meeting and attracting new prospective members and homebuyers. An important Bylaw Amendment letter went out in August on behalf of your Board of Governors and myself. I ask for your full support for these proposals as they are important to help stimulate homes sales within the community and to attract new, younger members to St. Andrews Country Club.

The busy part of our season is right around the corner, as we work hard to finalize many projects underway around the Club. Our kitchen renovations are now complete and under budget. The Ladies’ Card Room and adjacent restrooms are being renovated with completion expected mid-September. The new air-conditioning units are being installed with completion expected mid- to late October. Lakeside will close after Labor Day for normal facility maintenance and repair, mid- to late October, as normal. Other improvements around the Club reflect landscaping enhancements both on the golf courses and around the Clubhouse. Thank you to all the members who have been active in supporting the Club over the summer months, especially for your patience and understanding of the Gallery being closed as we renovated the main kitchen.

I hope all of you had a wonderful summer and look forward to another amazing season!

Get ready to gear up for a fun-filled activity season! from the old favorites like Karaoke and book talks, to some exciting new events like a st. andrews Dog show and monthly Kid’s Club we definitely have something for everyone.

at the end of october we will kick start the season with Kid’s fall activities on saturday, october 29 and a haunted house Party in the Promenade Room on sunday, october 30. We want to see all of our Members dressed up and excited for halloween as we will host a Monster Mash halloween bash for the adults in conjunction with the haunted house. there is no excuse not to have a good time this halloween!

our new Kid’s Club kicks-off on friday, october 21 at 6:00 p.m. in the Rec Room. on the third friday of each month, october through May, the Club is going to host a supervised evening for children ages 5 to 12. each month is uniquely themed and the children will get to participate in games, arts & crafts, see a show, or watch a movie depending upon each theme. and we can’t leave out all the awesome games we have in the Rec Room too - sounds like a fun to me! Regardless of your ability level, striking the first putt the correct distance is one of the most important ingredients required for shooting lower scores. if you acquire this capability you could consistently lower your scores iMMeDiateLY!

Players get so concerned with the line, or the mechanics of the stroke, that they rarely pay any attention to the distance that needs to be achieved. Certainly one has to be mindful of greens with unique situations regarding undulations and slopes, but most putts have less than one foot of break. Paying more attention to the proper distance, would be a lot more beneficial.

How do you solve this problem?

You must first get more comfortable with a longer, smoother stroke that is more powerful yet requires very little effort, allowing you to develop the club head speed necessary.

it is a fact that most putts by players at every level come up short! this is caused by not taking a swing that is long enough to strike the ball far enough. the player is forced into making a faster swing from a backswing that is too short, usually not very conducive to developing a consistent feel for longer putts.

becoming comfortable with the longer stroke allows you to strike the ball a farther distance without having to hit at the ball. the longer stroke gives the club head time to build speed on its own while promoting a sense of pace. this technique enables you to vary the distance you wish to strike the ball by the length of the stroke.

as you learn to take the club back far enough to generate the appropriate distance, you should be very conscious to not allow sudden

• The fastest way to lower scores is in your short game.

• The most critical part of your short game is putting.

• The most vital part of your putting is striking your first putt the correct distance!

stroke ten foot putts by looking at the target as you make your stroke.

Putting is feeling what you see, practicing the reverse of your normal routine will sharpen your feel and senses as you try to strike the ball the correct distance relative to what your eyes perceive.

When you can do this from ten feet, move to fifteen, twenty and longer trying to feel what you are seeing. When the ball starts rolling the correct distance, try your normal routine and see if you can still strike the ball the proper distance.

changes in grip pressure, or body pressure as you strike the ball. all bad shots are caused by over control, tension and anxiety causes over control...keeping grip pressure and body pressure constant eliminates most of it!

next, you need to focus more on the target and less on the mechanics of the stroke. focusing on the mechanics takes you away from the target mentally and then you lose the feel and inspiration necessary for producing a putt that rolls the proper distance.

Summer is flying by and the only thing hotter than the stifling Florida sun is our new European red clay court. i have personally played on the court several times and i have to say i have been very impressed. the court is not only aesthetically beautiful but its playability has been excellent. Many members have also played on the court and all feedback thus far has been extremely positive. so, if any of you have never played on a european red clay court now is your chance. Just be sure to call or sign up in the tennis Pro shop and we will make sure the red clay court is ready for you. here are a few tips and a little professional advice for all of you before playing on the red dirt. first, the red clay court is a bit slower than our har tru green clay courts so you must be a little more patient and wait for the right opportunity to be aggressive. because the court plays slower, it’s a bit harder to sometimes hit an outright winner. second, the drop shot is a great shot to be utilized on the red clay. not only is it a nice change of pace shot but also it can really tire out your opponents. finally, don’t be alarmed if your socks / shoes get a little red clay on them. it’s not that bad and I think definitely worth it!

one recent event to report on is our annual firecracker Mixer, held on July 4th. We had twenty-two members battling the brutal heat but in the end it was the always-improving Chris Miller who won the Ladies’ event and alan halpert who played lights out to win the Men’s tournament. Wendy Kohansky and Mort Kaufman took home finalist honors. Congratulations to all fourth of July trophy winners.

Red, White, Blue & Hot!

there are two early season events that you should definitely mark down on your calendar: The popular annual halloween Mixer (saturday, october 29th) and our opening tennis event and Luncheon (saturday, november 12th). the opening event will once again have a special doubles exhibition immediately following member play featuring our own st. andrews pro’s. these are two great upcoming events you don’t want to miss.

as we look forward to our new season, here are some other upcoming highlights. our Junior Program will begin september 21st and run through May. “themed” Junior Pizza Parties (ages 5-13) are now scheduled and the first one will be “The Halloween Junior Pizza Party” on friday, october 28th.

our three south Palm beach County Women’s teams will begin their seasonal league play in early september. a reminder to Ladies’ that mandatory practice will not begin until the first week of your scheduled matches. Karen Weisfeld and Chris Miller will again be the captains of our Division 2a and Division 4 teams. barb turesky will be the captain for our new Division 7 team. thank you Ladies’ for all your help and support with the teams.

in closing, we hope you are having a wonderful summer and the professional staff is very much looking forward to welcoming back all of you upon your return to beautiful st. andrews Country Club.

See you on the courts!

Kids today are more sedentary than ever, with most sitting in front of the T.V. an average of three hours a day! The time can creep up to five-and-a-half hours a day you add in computer games, texting and the internet.

Children need 60 minutes a day of physical activity and the great thing is it doesn’t have to be all at once. Competitive sports are always available, but there is also walking (with an iPod, of course), biking, bowling, or yoga. hiking, wall climbing, batting cages, and jogging with the dog also help kids get active.

More children are using our fitness center than ever before. Years ago, the board of Governors created special rules and waivers for children as young as 10 years old to use the fitness center and work out with a trainer. Yoga for Kids and Zumba Dance are popular with the younger crowd. Dumbbells, medicine balls and Resist-a-bands are also integrated along with the new kettlebells, battling ropes and the coolest new addition – viPR. Come see for yourself how viPR can help everything from improving your golf game to building your core strength to picking up your grandchild safely.

The benefits of kids exercising regularly are numerous. It’s time to help your kids get active and healthy.

The Benefits of Massage TherapyWhat pops into your mind when you think of the word massage? Relaxation? A luxury service? A treatment to help aches and pains?

The good news is massage is no longer viewed as merely a pampering treatment. In fact, the benefits that it offers the body and mind far exceed the feel of the treatment. Getting a massage on a regular basis aids the body and mind in the following aspects:

• Helps stress relief by managing anxiety and depression

• Assists in lowering blood pressure

• Improves circulation and strengthens the immune system by stimulating the body’s natural defense system.

• Improves flexibility and range of motion

• Improves posture

• Relaxes muscles resulting in reduced spasms and cramping

• Reduces post surgery swelling

• Assists in pain management

After learning about these benefits of massage, it can easily be viewed as a wellness treatment; relaxing and pampering is a given. While enjoying your first or next massage focus on the benefits and how receiving such a treatment can improve your aspect on and of life.

Whether I personally have the opportunity to show new members around the Club or they venture out on their own, I know I can count on each of you to extend a warm welcome. It’s refreshing to hear from our new members how welcome they feel and how nice it is that everyone approaches them and introduces themselves. They especially appreciate your invitations to play golf, tennis or cards! Don’t forget that the winter months will once again bring many new members to the Club who haven’t yet had the opportunity to experience all that we have to offer. Please keep an eye out for new members and welcome them, St. Andrews Style!

Our sales continue with a brisk pace and we are happy to welcome two new members who joined us in July and August. We are also experiencing an increase in builder/investor sales with two in August, bringing our total of closed sales this year to 17 with four more closings in the coming months.

We look forward to unveiling our new website in September and will roll it out officially to the entire membership with a special event to walk you through all the wonderful features of the new member-only part of the site. You’ll be able to quickly make reservations online for your entire party (yes, including other members), view your member statement in the same format as a printed copy and quickly see what new and exciting events are on the horizon. There is much more and we can’t wait for your participation!
