A note from our editor...

Lifestyle editor's letter

Hello everybody,Hello lovely Lifestyle Readers, I hope you have all enjoyed the holiday festivities. As we are about to embark on 2015, I want to wish you all a very hearty Happy New Year, from all of us here at Lifestyle Monthly Magazine.

What an extraordinary and successful year 2014 has been for us at Lifestyle and indeed for the City of Liverpool. I feel so lucky to work in such a fantastic forward looking and dynamic place. I can’t wait to get 2015 started, there are so many exciting times ahead; for the magazine I plan to build on our achievements, to continue working with our fantastic advertisers and welcome new ones aboard too. And personally I am looking forward to spending as much quality time with my lovely little family as possible. I am extremely lucky to work from home, to have the opportunity to spend as much time as I do with my twin boys – I genuinely look forward to every minute with them. I have lots of evenings out planned with my handsome husband too, from the The Bierkeller Liverpool Lifestyle Awards, the UK Fashion & Beauty Awards and later on in the year Liverpool Fashion Week. Phew, that’s alotta frocks to buy, I can’t wait. So come on 2015, I’m ready to enjoy every day with you!

Once again Happy New Year, I hope you all have a fun filled successful 2015!

Lifestyle bad boy charm Lifestyle bad boy charm

michael parr

It is almost impossible to resist the lure of a bad boy and Emmerdale’s Ross Barton, played by Michael Parr, with his womanising ways and menacing stare, is one of T.V’s best. In fact his character is so popular it has earned actor Michael Parr, a nomination at the National Television Awards 2015, in the Best Newcomer category. He chatted to Joy Lewis about being in the running for a National Television Award, Twitter and playing a bad boy.

How does it feel to be in tHe running for a national television award?

It feels great and really flattering. It makes me a little bit nervous because it would be fantastic to win, but I'm just really grateful to have been put forward for it. There are other people out there who are doing a great job as well, so I feel like I'm in a category of good actors. So yeah, I'm quite proud of myself really!

wHen did you first Hear tHe news? did you get to find out before tHe official announcement?

My producer, Kate got in touch with me and let me know. But to be honest, I normally find things out about my character via my Twitter fan club. I go on Twitter in the morning and my fans messages and comments to me there, gives me all the latest news and events. There is this young girl on the Twitter fan club and she’s really on it and up to date. So I find out most stuff about me from her!

do you Have your acceptance speech ready and your “lost but happy for the winner“ face practiced?

He laughs – No I’ve not written anything, I haven't thought about it too much at all, other than the list of people I have to thank. My mum will be there with me so she will be first on the list, of course.

what“s next for your cHaracter now tHat we Have recently seen a glimpse of His softer side?

Sorry no softer side will be emerging. I have been back on the set recording today so I know that I am back to my usual bad boy self again. Besides, I like playing the baddy. I don’t know what it is about me, but I always seem to land these types of roles.

in real life you are cHarming, softly spoken and a laid back nice guy “ a far cry from your cHaracter. are people wary wHen tHey first meet you?

Sometimes they are yes. But I take it as a gret compliment, as it means that the character I portray is believable and as an actor that is exactly what I want and work towards.

wHat’s next for you, do you want to stay on emmerdale?

Yes defiantly this has been the best year and half of my life. The lines that are given to me here are fantastic, the story lines are amazing and I really enjoy playing them. I would be more than happy to stay as long as they keep giving me this amazing material, and it doesn’t look like they are going to stop. So yes, for the foreseeable future I am more than happy to stay and keep on playing the bad boy of Emmerdale.

Independent report outlines benefits of regenerated Walton Hall ParkLiverpool City Council has released an independent study which outlines the potential benefits of a regenerated Walton Hall Park which would include a new stadium for Everton FC.

CITY’S GROWTH HIGHLIGHTED IN NEW REPORT

PwC’s 2014 Good Growth for Cities study indicates the city is heading in the right direction economically and socially. The index looks at a number of issues such as jobs, health, income, skills, housing, transport and environment to assess Good Growth, meaning it is a more balanced measure than just jobs or GVA (Gross Value Added). The data supports the Centre for Cities Monitor 2014 published earlier this year, which found

private sector jobs growth between 2010 and 2012.Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, said: “This is welcome news and shows that our mantra of Liverpool being open for business

and investors to the city, as well as growing start-up businesses and encouraging entrepreneurs. We need to create the most business-friendly city in the UK, so that our

can continue to provide services to the people of Liverpool, despite the massive cuts in Government funding.

A NEW report shows Liverpool is one of the top five performing cities for good growth in the post-recession period from 2011-2013.

Lifestyle NEWS

The outline feasibility report by Volterra Partners has found that the scheme has the potential to unlock regeneration

opportunities and develop long term step changes in the area. The authors found that it could create up to 1,250 permanent jobs, 1,000 new homes and 30,000 square metres of leisure, retail and restaurant space. It envisages re-providing all of the facilities that are currently available, including the Lifestyles Leisure Centre, Liverpool Soccer Centre, children’s play area and sports pitches.

It is estimated that a 50,000 seater stadium and associated development would take 40 – 50 percent of the 130 acre park, but that the remaining green space would be

and links with neighbouring housing.

More information about the overall scheme can be found at: www.waltonhallparkproject.co.uk

Completion of first Home for a PoundWORK is complete on the first property to be refurbished as part of Liverpool’s pioneering Homes for a Pound scheme.

10 point plan to tackle empty properties in Liverpool

The Cabinet is being asked to approve a £5 million 10 point plan, to tackle ‘voids’ across the city using a range of new initiatives which includes expanding the Homes for a Pound scheme and taking more assertive action to acquire rundown properties from owners.

Assistant Mayor and Cabinet Member for housing, Councillor Ann O’Byrne, said: “Driving up the quality, standard and range of properties in the city is a priority, and this is just part of a much bigger picture such as the building of new homes and the introduction of landlord licensing to improve life for private sector tenants.”

A FURTHER 2,000 empty properties blighting communities across Liverpool are set to be brought back into use.

Lifestyle news

Jayalal Madde, 49, was the very first applicant to be allocated a house under the city council’s pilot scheme to sell 20 of its

properties for just £1 last year in the Granby Four Streets, Arnside Road in Kensington and Webster Triangle East in Picton.

Mr Madde is a self-employed taxi driver who has lived for a number of years in Toxteth with his wife and two daughters. Having put the finances in place for the refurbishment works – including raising some of the money through his local credit union – he has been working to bring the house up to Decent Homes Standard over the last year.Work is underway on six other Homes for a Pound properties that were handed over last year, and the remaining properties in the pilot will be given to their new owners at the start of 2015 – taking the total number to 20. More than 1,000 people applied to be part of the scheme.

The Homes for a Pound initiative forms part of the Council’s wider plans to bring 179 homes back into use in the Granby, Picton and Arnside Road areas of Liverpool, working with Registered Housing Providers, Community Organisations and other partners.

All applicants are required to live or work in Liverpool, to be a first-time buyer and to be employed. Successful applicants must also agree to live in the property for a minimum of five years and not sub-let it within this time.

Musicians don’t come much greater than GRAHAM GOULDMAN. Founder of 10cc and enrolled in the Songwriters Hall of Fame, he embarks on his latest tour in 2015 arriving in Liverpool next month. He chatted to Amanda Moss about his plans, which include a desire to write a song for One Direction.

GRAHAMGOULDMAN

The British songwriter and musician originates from down the road in Lancashire and started off in a number of Mancunian bands including The High Spots and The Whirlwinds. He spent most of the 60s in bands but concentrated on his song writiing, for which the industry started to sit up and take notice and he wrote many hits during the decade.

He is of course best known for founding 10cc and scoring classics such as Dreadlock Holiday, Rubber Bullets, I’m Not In Love, The Dean and I, and I’m Mandy Fly Me, making these shows a must-see for old and new fans alike.

Purveyors of some of the greatest pop records of the 20th century, 10cc were one of the most inventive and influential bands in the history of popular music, achieving commercial, critical and creative success in equal measure and selling more than 30 million record worldwide. In the UK, the band had 11 Top 10 singles and three No 1s – Rubber Bullets, I’m Not In Love and Dreadlock Holiday.

Why are your heading back on tour, do you not feel like having a rest?Absolutely not. We like touring, that is what we do. As a musician I want to play all the time. That is why we have lasted 40 years.Year on year we get busier and visit more countries," says Gouldman. It's great, we love touring and playing together and the audiences these days are very gratifying. You get the people you would expect, who grew up with 10cc, but you also get young kids who know the songs too.

When you penned I’m Not In Love did you realise you had something special?Yes, like with all my songs I wanted to create something timeless, that everyone can relate to. It covered all aspects of the artistic spectrum. Our songs don’t seem to date; they are original, we never followed any trend, we simply wrote for our own pleasure. The fact that the songs are being played as often on the radio today as they ever were shows how true that is.

What do you think of manufactured bands that appear on X Factor?Well it’s just another part of the entertainment industry. They can sing and dance, they have their niche market.

So would you like to write song for One Direction.I would love to record with One Direction, yeah.

How did it feel to be inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in America, joining legends such as Burt Bacharach, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney?I was very flattered and it is a wonderful accolade.

How did it feel to be inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in America, joining legends such as Burt Bacharach, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney?I was very flattered and it is a wonderful accolade.

THE BLOGGER PROGRAMME_

Lifestyle social media

he Blogger Programme (TBP) is a new platform designed to help brands and bloggers connect easily.

Bloggers, vloggers and social media icons have a huge influence on their followers and create a massive impact within the online community, of which brands should be taking advantage of to reach their ideal demographic on a large scale.

For brands, the biggest difficulty is finding a suitable blogger for each collaboration. TBP simplifies this process by giving you access to a database of over 9,000 bloggers. Using the easy to use search facility you can find your ideal blogger by location, gender, genre of blog or even platform. You can then even sort these results by highest fol-lowing (per platform), fastest growers, most favourited, recently active and many more.

TBP enables you to manage and organise all of your blogger outreach campaigns in one place, with notifications, messages and an online community to promote any oppor-tunities, competitions and jobs you have available.

We offer a free 1-2-1 tutorial to enable us to show you how to make the most of using the programme so feel free to get in touch and start increasing your online exposure straight away!

Lifestyle shopping the sales

Visit www.johnlewis.com for further information

Clare Jones, personal stylist at John Lewis Liverpool, said: “The sales can be a daunting time for some shoppers, but they needn’t be. It’s the perfect time of

year to buy seasonal products, discover new brands and make your money stretch a little further. Clever sales shopping can help you get all set for 2015 by giving your home and your wardrobe a post-Christmas refresh.”

Claire’s top tips for getting the most out of the January sales:1. Plan ahead - do some online research and make a wish list so you know exactly what you’re looking for where to visit. You’ll instantly take a more focused approach, save time and avoid potential post-shopping guilt.2. Dress for what you’re looking for – wear something that’s easy to pull on and off throughout the day. It’s always worth bringing a pair of your favourite heels along in your bag too.3. Clearance is a great time to buy seasonal products, like coats, knitwear and partywear – we still have a few months of winter left after all.4. With so many products on offer it can be easy to get overwhelmed by the sales. But there’s no need to be daunted - the team at John Lewis Liverpool can help you find the product that’s best for you. And if you’re looking for some inspiration, you can book an appointment with myself or one of my personal stylist colleagues.5. Stick to the classics. Staple items such as a little black dress, leather boots and cashmere

scarf are great investment pieces as they never go out of style. For homeware, look for high quality kitchen pots or stylish bed linen and stick to simple colour schemes for long lasting pieces.6. At John Lewis we are committed to being Never Knowingly Undersold and price match our competitors’ special offers. This means that in addition to our own Clearance offers, we price match our competitors sales throughout the store, from beauty, to toys, to electronics.7. Make sure you’re ready to hit the shops for doors opening and secure your pick of the best stock.

Lifestyle wildcard ritchie

The X Factor’s wildcard, Stevi Ritchie, speaks of his excitement ahead of February’s The X Factor 2015 Live Tour.

THE RISE OF STEVI RITCHIE

Lifestyle wildcard ritchie

In a whirlwind few weeks, Stevi Ritchie took to the X Factor stage as Ricky Martin, Freddie Mercury, and the Phantom of the Opera. It was a dream come true

for the 34-year-old call centre worker who, after years of talent shows and intermittent theatre roles, finally charmed the judges in this year’s singing contest.

He was booted out of the high profile competition following band Only The Young in a double elimination week, having made it to the top 7, but the ride is far from over. Next comes The X Factor Live Tour, and 2015 is looking to be just as busy for Stevi.

“I can’t wait,” he grins, “I’m really looking forward to the next year – in January we start rehearsals.”

“We’ll be playing at the O2, Bournemouth International Centre, and so on. They’re all great venues and I can’t wait to go out there and rock up. Just be me and have a ball and have fun. With me what you see is what you get so just have a laugh!”

It sounds like the dream, and Stevi certainly has the drive to perform. “I’m gonna work hard,” the entertainer warns, “I won’t let anything get in my way.”

That said, he’s an entertainer by nature, and hints that we may be seeing the return of some of his classic X Factor wardrobe come the tour. “Who knows?” he says mischievously. “They may bring those back into it - a massive performance of what you saw on the Saturday nights.”

Stevi might have forgotten the words to his audition song – but he certainly brought the fun factor to the show. And while he was happiest singing ballads, his priority was to keep things lively.

“I think it would get a bit boring and tedious actually for people, you know, standing there singing all the time.” Saying that, “I achieved what I wanted to achieve,” he put forward the idea of performing Phantom of the Opera’s belter Music of the Night. Luckily, mentor Simon Cowell agreed. “Originally they were gonna give me something like Ghostbusters! I took the risk, it paid off and I’m really pleased I’ve done those big numbers and that I went out with a bang.”

The X Factor has already drastically changed this call centre worker’s life – “God yeah, do you know what? It’s amazing how to think that months ago no one knew who I was and now everyone in the country – and if

not where have you been – knows what The X Factor is and a lot of people know who I am. It’s really nice that people recognise me on the street and ask me for photographs, it’s such a lovely feeling. The X Factor has given me a massive opportunity and opened so many doors now which I never thought would be possible so I’m really happy with that.”

And like any star-to-be, Stevi is already dealing with the other side of fame: groupies! “I’ve got a bit of a following so far,” he grins mischievously. “Quite a few who have said, ‘we love you, we follow you, we think you’re funny,’ it’s really flattering actually. I’m sure I’m not the only contestant who’s got that, of course, and I think Ben Haenow’s popularity is rising too.”

And while Stevi says, “If Simon was to offer me a recording contract I would take it. Of course I would, I’d be silly not to,” he knows that as an entertainer by nature, other ventures are possible. Taking his new-found celebrity status with a pinch of salt, Stevi remains distinctly down to earth. “Because at the end of the day you can’t be fussy in this business and you can’t take nothing for granted - so I just go along with whatever comes up really!”

“You can’t pick and choose - for me I don’t even call myself any sort of celebrity, I think my profile is now raised a lot more than it was, which is great, but I’m still the same me from day one. I’ve never changed or let anything go to my head: what you see is what you get with me.”

There’s only one Stevi Ritchie.

“You can’t pick and choose - for me I don’t even call

myself any sort of celebrity...”

Our PND service principally provides support by visiting the homes of anyone who is struggling with the symptoms of PND. Here one of our specialist practitioners assesses need and offers tailor-made support, this can include advice, enhanced listening support (both emotional and practical) and/or signposting to other services that could be of help.If one to one at home isn’t right for an individual we also offer drop in clinics at in addition to group work sessions at various venues and Children’s Centres around Liverpool. This offers a space for individuals to share and learn about PND while qualified Group Workers help them to learn to relax and build up confidence at their own pace.‘Our Stories’ PND DVDIn November we launched our Post-Natal Depression service’s new DVD ‘Our Stories’.The DVD which has been produced for both professionals and people experiencing PND has four segments which look at the experience of PND, Support, Dads and Our Service in Liverpool. The film aims to raise awareness of PND and what parents think helped them to recover. You can watch our brief advertisement for the film on YouTube now, this features clips from the film and details on how to order a copy. The DVD is now available to health professionals across the country in an effort to ensure women and their families are getting the help and support they need. If

LivPIP aims to help parents and other primary caregivers to understand and develop the relationship they have with their baby. The service works with families both ante-natally and post-natally. This means that beyond our original PND provision we can now provide a fully rounded peri-natal support service for families living in Liverpool, working from conception to the age of two.Our main focus is on helping parents to gain a greater insight into their own approach to parenting and how this affects the relationship they have with their baby. Our overarching aim is to promote positive parent infant psychotherapy as a critical element of early years intervention. We aim to do this by providing both direct support services to which other professionals can refer in addition to relevant training for professionals from across the city.

Lifestyle a beautiful thing

“What doesn’t attract me to the play?” Brooks grins. “I was obsessed with the film when I was a kid, I watched it like 100 times, I was one of the cult followers really. I remember seeing Surrane (Jones) in the play last year and going ‘ooh, I want to do that, put me in it! Lo and behold, a year or two later here I am, so it’s like a dream come true.”

It’s hard for bubbly Brooks to pinpoint exactly why the iconic play resonates with her - “Just the content of the story,” she starts. “I went to theatre school where I had lots of gay friends - I had a boyfriend that was gay!” she laughs. “So it’s always been important, the performances in the film were just amazing and it’s a great character for me, so it’s a really big draw all round really.”

And Beautiful Thing still endures to this day, despite being over 20 years old. “There are still, especially in the regional areas where we are touring, people going through this very same issue and people are still terrified of coming out, they don’t know how to do it and they are scared of talking about it. I think that it’s a timeless play, it’s brilliant, it’s funny, it’s sad, and I think that it speaks to a lot of people still.”

We suggest that the role of strong young mum Sandra seems a happy fit for Brooks; “Are you saying I’m a feisty single mum?!” the actress laughs. “What I’m hoping to do is to bring a great deal of warmth to it, know what I mean? She’s feisty, she’s loud, she’s not afraid to speak her mind, she’s had a hard life and fought to be where she is, fought to bring up that little boy, so the relationship that they have is one that’s very special in the end.” Adding that, “I’ve got some of the best lines - I just can’t wait to say them.”

Calling this, “completely different” from the television work for which she is best known, however, Brooks is feeling the nerves. “With

learning lines in Eastenders, they go in very quickly, it’s in and out because it’s so quick and so fast paced. I haven’t done a great deal of theatre so this is all quite new, so I’m shi**ing it to be honest! I just hope I’m ok. But it’s so exciting.”

It’s nerve-wracking, but it’s a positive step forward for the actress and mum of one. “I am busy, but it’s great because I feel like I am achieving what I set out to when I left Eastenders, so I feel really, really lucky,” she says.

The 18 week tour will also take her away from her daughter, Kiki, and it wasn’t an easy decision to come to. “I love being at home, I love it. My daughter is 10 now which is such an important time and I’ve never been away or gone away with work, so when this came up I had a lengthy conversation with my immediate family members and decided that it was now my turn to be able to go off and spend time away. We have a few days off in-between theatre moves so I’ll be able to get back and she’ll also come down and see me, so we’re going to make it work. But I am a bit nervous about it.

“She is very adaptable and my mum is there and her dad is there so I have a brilliant support system, we have a close knit family.”

And even when the tour comes to a close, the stage will be calling once again. “I’m starting another play called Contact at the Park theatre in Finsbury. It’s a new play about swinging! It’s a bit raunchy, which I’m a bit nervous about but it’s exciting!”

Charlie Brooks will star as ‘Sandra’ in Beautiful Thing, touring the UK

from 23 March 2015. www.beautthing.com

CHARLIE BROOKS ON THE ROADBest known as Eastenders troublemaker Janine Butcher, bringing drama to Albert Square with a medley of cocaine addition, murder and prostitution, Charlie Brooks is now taking her talent on tour with the theatre, playing Sandra in the iconic play, Beautiful Thing.

The play follows two young men, Jaimie and Ste, and their blossoming romance in an inner city housing estate. Together the two boys find comedy, warmth and the music of Mama Cass through their loud-mouthed next door neighbour Leah. Brooks plays Sandra, Jamie’s mum and the local barmaid.

Lifestyle dry january!

PEOPLE in Liverpool are being urged to start 2015 by dropping a shirt or dress size through cutting the amount of alcohol they drink.

Drier January, run by the Public Health team at Liverpool City Council, aims to get people thinking about their alcohol

intake in January after the festive blow out.

It is estimated that more than 40,000 adults in Liverpool drink more than they should do – with around 11,000 at a high risk of harm.

They are being encouraged to “Drop a Drink Size” in the new campaign, As well as the other health risks involved in drinking too much alcohol, many people are not aware of the extra calories involved. Three pints of beer, for example, is the equivalent of eating two burgers.

They are also being asked to sign up to Drier January through the website www.fewerunits.co.uk. Which has tips of reducing drinking. Participants will be asked if they want to complete a questionnaire to find out if their drinking is in the Department of Health guidelines which say men should not drink more than 3-4 units of alcohol per day and women 2-3 units.

And they will be offered the opportunity to attend free physical activity sessions at the city’s; council’s lifestyles.

Deputy Mayor and cabinet member for social care and health , Councillor Roz Gladden, said: “This is a really important issue as alcohol misuse is very important health concern in Liverpool.”

“Although we have had success in reducing the number of hospital admissions we still rank 13th out of 326 councils in England for this reason.”

“As well as the other health issues many people just do not know how many calories there are in drinks. Lots of people want to lose weight but they, perhaps, don’t realise just how many calories they are consuming when they have a drink.”

“Signing up to this campaign will help them to rally drop a drink size in the New Year.”

Drop a Drink Size” and have a Drier January

People are being asked to consider:

The calorie content of their favourite •tippleHaving two alcohol-free days a week•Alternating alcohol with soft drinks•Choosing drinks with fewer units•Not keeping lots of alcohol at home•

Since splitting with producer and keyboardist Ben Langmaid in 2011, citing musical differences, La Roux’s frontwoman Elly Jackson has remained

underground before bursting out with this summer’s critically-acclaimed album Trouble in Paradise.

La Roux fans might have been worried when two became one, especially after successes the likes of ‘Bulletproof’ and ‘In For The Kill,’ but Jackson’s solo effort has been received with open arms. Complete with funk guitar and Jackson’s striking vocals, it’s been a long creative process to reach an impressive new sound. In fact, the new tracks exude a warmer tone than we would ever have expected from the normally super cool La Roux.

“It’s kind of a shock now if I listen to the first record, to be honest, I’m like ‘what the f**k did we do – where’s the bottom end, the bass?’ says Jackson, “but at the time that was exactly what I wanted it to sound like.”

It’s not that Jackson and Langmaid “sat down and said, ‘Oh, we must not have any bass,’” when composing their hit first record, but “we chose to have specific influences and those influences just weren’t so warm.”

So it’s hardly surprising that today’s tracks follow a different sound; doesn’t everyone undergo a musical evolution in the space of eight years?

“It’s a bit like saying why don’t you go out with the same person you did when you were 17 – well, for obvious reasons,” Jackson agrees with a laugh. The synth-pop singer now sees her first record as an ex-boyfriend that she loved very much at the time, but now, she has moved on.

“I think everybody looks back at something at this point of their lives and goes, ‘I can’t say

that time or the thing that I did wasn’t me, but I can’t exactly say that they are me,’ if that makes sense,” she explains. The record might have reflected, “where I was at the time,” but with aspects of Jackson’s musical influences taken out of the equation (by Langmaid), the singer admits to feeling, “somewhat shoe-horned into a corner.”

It’s a corner that she is now “trying to crawl out of!” with her new record. Trouble in Paradise’s disco vibes dominate, but even today, the artist, who grew up on a diet of folk, can’t quite put her finger on her multiple influences.

Saying that her beloved disco has, “a funniness and a cheekiness and a kind of boldness and a silliness - as long as its not the wrong kind of disco, there is a lot of novelty disco that is awful!” Jackson is now working with a new engineer, Ian Sherwin. Her 80s influences still resound, but it’s clear Jackson isn’t an artist frozen in time.

“At the end of one record, you think you’ve learnt everything. This is what everybody says, they go: ‘ Oh, now I know what I’m going to do when I make the next album, I’m not going to make any of these mistakes again.’ Then you get to the next album and you realise that the same rules never apply.”

“I think the fundamental thing is that Ian and I want the same thing artistically: he wants me to be the artist that I am.”

If this is the ‘real’ La Roux, we’re not complaining.

Lifestyle what's your sign?

2015 Year Ahead Horoscopes from Russell Grant

Lifestyle what's your sign?

Aries (Mar21/Apr20)It’s important to play by the rules between January and mid-June. Resist the urge to cut corners or demand special favours. By showing respect for authority, you will pave the way for future success. It can be difficult for an impulsive character like you to wait your turn, but it is a lesson worth learning. The powers that be are watching your progress closely. They need to know you can be entrusted to follow the rules, as well as enforce them.

Taurus (Apr21/May21)Budgeting is critical between January and the middle of June. This is your chance to achieve financial independence, provided you make a concerted effort to pay your bills. If you’re drowning in debt, consolidate your loans into one, low interest payment. Make regular payments until you’ve totally wiped out this obligation.

Gemini (May22/Jun21)Erratic friends will prompt you to take a second look at your social circle. You will decide that quality, not quantity, is more important when it comes to social contacts. You’ll begin to ease the flakes from your midst as early as January and will continue to do so all the way through mid-June. 2015 is about establishing intimacy and getting serious about what you really want from life.

Cancer (Jun22/Jul23)Establishing a fitness routine is critical between January and mid-June of this year. If you detect a twinge or pain, get medical attention for the issue. You may have to alter your dietary habits as a result. At first, this will be difficult, as you will long for the days when you could just eat whatever you wanted. The longer you abstain from the ingredients that are giving you grief, the better you will feel. Pretty soon, you will no longer crave the foods that created such digestive distress.

Leo (Jul24/Aug23)Getting serious about a casual romance will be in the cards between January and mid-June. You’re no longer interested in having fun. You want to build a life with someone special. If you’re already in a committed relationship, you will have to make a concerted effort to be more passionate towards your amour. It’s so easy to fall into a boring pattern when you’re used to being together. Don’t make that mistake in 2015, when it becomes imperative to inject some passion into your life.

Virgo (Aug24/Sep23)Family responsibilities will continue to require a great deal of time between January and mid-June. An elderly relative may require your care. You might be called upon to give extra instruction to a child who is struggling

in school. It may be necessary to make room in your household for an out of work relative. If you’re struggling with house payments, you might decide to move to a smaller place that is more affordable. Whatever the changes ahead, they will try your patience.

Libra (Sep24/Oct23)Close relatives and neighbours will be less than helpful, especially between January and mid-June and then again from the middle of September until the end of the year. If you’re going away, make sure you have several names of reliable sitters for children and pets. It may take a few phone calls before finding someone who can care for your precious ones while you’re away. Mechanical trouble could also rear its ugly head. Be sure to have your car serviced on a regular basis and be ready to replace any faulty wires or tires whenever a problem arises.

Scorpio (Oct24/Nov22)Sticking to a budget remains important during the first half of the year. There won’t be a lot of money for extras, due to financial responsibilities. Paying off a debt, helping an unemployed relative and struggling with a higher cost of living are among the possibilities. The good news is that you have a natural ability to make your money stretch as far as it can possibly go.

Sagittarius (Nov23/Dec21)It’s important to take your needs seriously between January and mid-June. Instead of worrying what will make everyone else happy, put your priorities first. If this means getting more sleep or exercise, so be it. You’ll have to scale back commitments to others, but it can’t be helped. If you’re determined to switch careers, you’ll have to go back to the classroom. Spending less time with friends and family will be part of the equation. Don’t back down from your goal.

Capricorn (Dec22/Jan20)Facing your demons will be a continuing theme from January through mid-June. Use this time to take stock of what you really want from life. Any relationships that drain you of energy will fall by the wayside. You simply don’t have the patience to deal with emotional vampires anymore. Once you drive these pests from your midst, you’ll have more time for solitary projects. Spending time on a hobby will be spiritually rewarding. It will be a relief to do work that isn’t related to income or status.

Aquarius (Jan21/Feb19)It’s important to be discerning about your social circle, especially between January and the middle of June. Someone who keeps breaking promises and missing appointments isn’t worth your time. You need to surround yourself with wise, witty people who can both give and receive. If you’re looking for work, who you know will be more important than what you know. Don’t hesitate to ask influential friends to write letters of recommendation. Although you’d rather get a job on your own merits, you can’t afford to be idealistic in this economy. Your career prospects will improve greatly between mid-June and late September.

Pisces (Feb20/Mar20)You’ll continue to exude magic and mystery throughout 2015. Be sure to make plenty of time for creative pursuits, as they will bring you great happiness. If you play your cards right, you’ll find a wonderful job in your desired industry between January and mid-June. You’ll be able to uplift and inspire your team, achieving an unprecedented level of success. This position will involve quite a lot of travel, which will be stimulating. You will be homesick from time to time, but this will be a necessary sacrifice.

MARTINQUIRK

mi casa es tu casa

Poor old January always pays the price for December’s indulgence. It is the high, dry, cold and wind‐swept Tibetan plain of the calendar, starved of water and

nourishment by all that heavy snow which must inevitably fall on the neighbouring Himalayas of Christmas and New Year. Most of the population is either partied out, in the depressing grip of a personal financial crisis or on one of those temporary New Year health trips that really annoy the regulars at every gym in the world and only serves to pay for the owner’s summer holidays.

For any of Lifestyle’s readers afflicted by any or all three of these situations at the outset of 2015 let me offer you a lifeline in the form of acquiring a potentially valuable new social skill, quite cheaply and very enjoyably, at one of Liverpool’s most pleasant and venerated institutions. There is also the option of making some funky new friends into the bargain.

One of my very favourite bars in Liverpool and, indeed, the whole world, the mighty and righteous Casa on Hope Street, hosts a very authentic salsa night every single Thursday night of the year.

The extremely popular Salsa Sabor Latino starts at 8pm in the bar’s rear function room with an hour‐long lesson open to all newcomers and beginners, given by Ian El Griffo. This is followed by a further lesson

for ‘improvers and intermediate’ learners at 9pm. Then at 10pm there is a full on salsa party for all to enjoy until 2am with DJ Martinsalsa.

The regulars at Salsa Sabor Latino, both male and female, come from all over the world as well as from across Merseyside and this, plus the organised interaction gives it quite a unique, open and friendly atmosphere. Bar prices, as always at The Casa, are extremely reasonable and dancing will burn away those pounds that you managed to put on over

Christmas without you even noticing, so you really have no excuse. So, ditch the Lycra and get up and get on down there. Salsa Sabor Latino at The Casa, Hope St, every Thursday at 8pm.

Happy new year everyone, I hope you’ve all had a fantastic Christmas. This months topic is the bookings of venues and artists. Owners of Pubs, Clubs and Restaurants will have already booked entertainment to keep the punters happy. More venues will have booked their entertainment up to 12 months ago, such is the demand for quality acts. Artists are normally booked up 3 months ahead however it is of benefit to everybody that bookings are secured, the venue can budget for and advertise the night and the artist has the security of a long term booking.

So looking at it from both sides, venue owner and artist, what goes into ensuring a successful and profitable night and keep people entertained and willing to return? From the owners point of view there are a whole host of considerations to be taken into account. Firstly, is the entertainer suitable for the venue? It would be a big mistake, for example, to book a heavy metal band to perform at a discreet restaurant where Trad Jazz would be better recieved. Venues know their clientele and will cater to their tastes in entertainment, bookings are normally made, often via agents, or after some careful

research into the artist, usually by viewing their website, previous experience of seeing them perform, or on recommendation. Cost is an issue too, artists are aware that prices rise during certain periods, but with the increasing pressure on budgets available at venues, a fair deal needs to be struck between the parties, which can mean some hard bargaining! Venue owners may need to consider whether

or not a cover charge needs to be made to take into consideration the cost of providing entertainment.

The artist needs to prepare for the night, material, dress and stage presentation are all important factors which all go into the mix to provide a memorable performance, keep the venue owner, and the audience, satisfied and, hopefully, guarantee a repeat booking coupled with the satisfaction of a positive response from the audience. Communication between the venue and the artist is another important part of the process, understanding what material is needed and whether or not the artist is able to produce it, if a repeat of the classic only fools and horses scenario where Raquel teamed up with a night club singer and, successfully as it turned out, performed classics like cwying and gween, gween gwass of home, is to be avoided.

So careful planning, early booking and communication with a professional approach to the nights entertainment will provide a successful night out which will have them rocking in the aisles and coming back for more!

Rachel Spencer, performing as Sofia, is an entertainer and vocal coach, if you want to know more about her, or make a booking you can view her website at

Teen heartthrob Taylor Jones’ first single Fallen Out soared to number 2 in the UK Urban Charts and his first official release Rock The Party hit the charts all over Europe. Now his latest single Emergency has just been released into the UK with a fresh new pop sound that is bound to recruit a whole new army of fans for this young pop star.

CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT YOUR LATEST SINGLE EMERGENCYEmergency is a fun pop track which is the debut release from my new pop project. It’s a sing-along record which describes an awkward tension and the feeling of being

By Joy Lewis

unappreciated in a relationship, at the same

go once you’ve already enrolled your feelings into such a commitment with another person. I like my songs to relate to my listeners and what they could be feeling.

YOU’RE AN INTERVIEWER, SONGWRITER AND PERFORMER. WHICH IS THE REALYOU? WHAT DO YOU LIKE DOING BEST?Indeed. I am an artist and songwriter most of all. I of course write for other artists, however

and concentrate 90% of my time on writing TAYLOR JONES records, and believe me, we have a lot in store! Being in the studio, writing new tracks and really expressing myself through music is my favourite thing to do and my highlight activity as an artist / writer. I love to perform and entertain of course, though the feeling of writing a melody in the studio which you know can possibly touch thousands or millions of hearts is truly magical.

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO BE FAMOUS IN ANOTHER COUNTRY BEFORE THE UK?Being famous in another country is strange, but great. When I’m in the UK I can let loose,

kick back - though when I’m in Belgium I have to be accompanied in precaution most of the time. Though that is a small price to pay when I get to hear myself on the radio, see my video on TV, be bombarded by fans, read about myself in magazines and more;

an incredible experience for an 18 year old (when it started, I’m now 20).

WHAT’S IN STORE FOR YOU IN 2015?I like to be positive at all times - let’s hope 2015 can be the year to really break the UK

week to make this happen and have done nothing else since I was 16.

superstar dj, joel thomas zimmerman

Dan Osbourne

Superstar DJ, Joel Thomas Zimmerman, better known by his stage name deadmau5, flew in to the U.K for one evening a few weeks ago, to attend the BAC MONO Christmas party.

Why the flying visit? He was there to say a big thank you to all the team at BAC, who are getting his road /track car ready for delivery, the self-confessed car fanatic, has ordered one of the very rare machines, from the Liverpool company. As fitting for a super car company party, the evening was a very sexy affair, with a guest list of beautiful people traveling from the 4 corners of the world to attend.

Photo’s by Bond Media Agency Dan Osborne made his panto debut this holiday season at the Epstein Theatre for Jack and the Beanstalk. Playing to a full house every night with co stars, Suzanne Collins and Alison Crawford, they made sure young Dan made it through his first panto. He didn’t disappoint with chants from the TOWIE fans in the audience for Dan to get his shirt off, which he eventually did.

MATERIALSSkirting boards • Screws and plugs

TOOLSChop saw • Combi drill / drivers

Brill bits • Jigsaw

Skirting boards not only look great but serve a dual purpose they aesthetically finish off the floor and the walls, as well as protecting the lower walls when hoovering and cleaning etc

Skirting boards come in lots of shapes and sizes ranging from 4 inches to 9 inches high.

Measure and cut the length of the skirting board to size, then when it comes to cutting the corners there are two ways of achieving a perfect corner; one is a 45 degree mitre cut and the other is by having a straight piece of skirt already fixed to one wall, then scribe and cut the adjoining piece to meet the corner.

These can both easily be achieved, but you are going to have to use a chop saw to get a perfect 45 degree angle and a jigsaw to cut your scribed corner.

To fix your skirting to the wall you want to drill a clearance hole in the skirt, mark the plaster on your walls then drill and plug the holes - so you can firmly screw your skirts to the walling.

DIY...

I hope everyone has enjoyed a wonderful festive period and you have managed to find time for some much-needed rest and relaxation. You may have managed to catch me on John Bishop’s Christmas Show which included special guests George Ezra, Ella Henderson, Jack Whitehall and Jason Byrne. It was great fun to film and the whole show featured some world-class entertainment. As I’ve mentioned in previous columns, I’ve been doing a lot of work recently with Checkatrade and I had the pleasure of attending the Redwood Park School in Portsmouth which has been the latest project for the Checkatrade Foundation. The whole team have spent over a year raising funds to support the school for children with special needs by replacing very inadequate sports changing facilities with a modern up-to-date building with heating, showers and toilets.A TV channel that I am regularly involved with is Ideal World, as it showcases the very best products for all your needs around the house. I have been helping to present Wagner Spraytech’s range of paint-spraying products which make painting the house much simpler. Their products are designed to suit all skill levels from novices to professionals and guarantee a great finish. That’s about it from me this month my friends – I’m excited for 2015 and I hope everyone enjoys a happy and prosperous year. If your New Year’s resolution was to improve your DIY skills, I hope this month’s tip will be come in handy!

Lifestyle man's best friend

This New Year, Dogs Trust Merseyside is appealing to the public to see if they have space in their hearts for a rescue dog. Staff at the rehoming centre are

hoping that 2015 is the year that the dogs at their centre find their forever homes. There are dogs of all shapes and sizes that would fit into lots of different lifestyles who are just waiting to be loved. They are waiting for youto give them the caring home they deserve. So if you think you can find a place in yourheart for a dog, why don’t you pop down tothe centre in Huyton and visit the dogs and see if you are a match for them.A day at Dogs Trust Merseyside starts with Georgina Lowery, Rehoming Centre Manger, who lives on site along with two other man-agers, opening the centre at 7:30am. Staff live on site so the dogs have round the clock support and puppies can be fed through-out the night if needed. 28 members of dedicated staff arrive at the centre for the first task of the day which is to clean the kennels of the 74 dogs in their care to make sure they are pristine for the day ahead. All the dogs have cosy blankets and chairs in

their kennels to make them feel as at home as possible. Next up is breakfast, with each member of staff looking after a few dogs to make sure they get the best possible care. These dogs range from cheeky Chihuahuas to loving Labradors and all have different dietary requirements.

Once the dogs are prepared for the day, staff will spend time socialising and walking the dogs, to give them as much attention as possible. Some dogs are on training programmes, whether that is learning agility, or learning to sit, and our specialist training and behaviour advisors are on hand to make sure the dogs are all on track with their learning.

The afternoons are taken up with members of the public coming to the centre to visit and the staff spend time speaking to potential adopters to make sure that they achieve the perfect match, and the dogs find their forever home.

So if you think you can find a place in your heart for a dog, why don’t you pop down to the centre in Huyton and visit the lovely dogs and see if you are a match for them.

Can you give a dog a Happy new year?

BMW’S NEW M6BMW has unveiled the even sportier looking M6 that will arrive in showrooms shortly, and I have to admit that it is one of the sexiest looking cars BMW has created in quite a long time.

Externally, the M6, which is a high performance version of BMW's 6-Series, has been given a more pronounced grille compared to last year's version, along with more aerodynamically-shaped side mirror caps.

There's also a set of 19-inch forged alloy wheels, which sit snugly alongside aggressive looking intakes, and carbon fibre tipped quad-exhausts. But where the M6 really stands out is under the bonnet. Here you'll find a 4.4-litre turbocharged V8 delivering a gob-smacking 560 horsepower. For those who don't think that's enough, there's the Competition Package which boosts power to 575bhp. All that oomph propels the M6 from 0-62mph in 4.2 seconds and tops out at a limited 155mph. When you consider the car weighs over two tons, it needs every one of those horses under the hood.

From the city chic of Milan, the style of Turin and modern day urban demands, for thirty years Fiat’s Panda has traveled its own distinct route. As practical as it is unique, it’s the latest

Panda Cross 4x4 that allows the driver to transcend the obstacles that brings others to a halt.

Continuing the Panda’s original cubist design, an increased ride height, exclusive alloy rims and oversized 185/65R15 Good year 4 Seasons tyres, bold looks that incorporate striking colours, flared side mouldings and bright red towing hitches, this genuine super mini five-seater transforms into a practical family workhorse in seconds. A lesson in the conceptual use of available space, not a millimeter is wasted, access via the five large doors enhancing passenger and cargo access.

Power comes from either Fiat’s award winning 85hp 0.9cc TwinAir petrol engine or 75hp MultiJet diesel unit, both of which will deliver in excess of 60mpg. Brisk

and nimble to drive, the new Panda Cross 4x4 makes light of city centre traffic or motorway commutes. But when the tarmac ends is where this stylish little car comes into its own. Flick on the Terrain Control and muddy tracks, steep inclines and snow covered lanes become this Fiat’s natural habitat.

A modern Italian classic that makes a statement wherever you are, this new Panda is going places no matter where they might be.

Lifestyle the last word with amanda moss

HelloI am not going to make New Year

Resolutions, I never do because I haven’t got any willpower and I accept the way things are.I am never going to be a size 8 again and no fitness dvd will make

me so. This year is filled with excitement for me, with so much to look forward to, on a personal note; watching my kids grow and develop, a nice summer holiday together. Family fun. On a professional note my events promise to be amazing: The Bierkeller Liverpool Lifestyle Awards, working with the Lord Mayor with her charity fashion show, Manchester Fashion Week, the UK Fashion & Beauty Awards and of course Liverpool Fashion Week.

Lifestyle magazine enters our 7th birthday. Wow, we made it! Still number one and still never missed printing a month’s issue since I launched it in April 2008. Quite an achievement in this climate, I don’t mind saying. You see it is ok to applaud yourself, to recognise your own talents and strengths and build on them. I have an amazing team as well (thank you, guys)

In a world of negativity where technology spreads resentment and hatred, there is an OFF or BLOCK button.I have no time for this poison. Excitement and happiness is what I seek. I carry healing crystals, I am tactile and hug people (try it, it feels good). I like to laugh, hopefully this magazine will make you

Amanda Moss

smile. Life is so much more fulfilling when you have a positive outlook, and it is proven that you live longer too. Think positive and positive things will happen, it really is true. Let me wish you a very happy new year and a successful and healthy one too. How you choose to see the coming year is up to you…but try being happy and optimistic about what lies ahead. You might like it.

Stay stylish,
