The Liverpool Athenaeum, one of the city’s most cultural and historic establishments announces the

launch of its new series of educational events.

The ‘Athovation’ forums have been designed to assist the prospects of Liverpool’s next generation of movers and shakers through learning and knowledge and we predict a very positive response from the local community.

The forums are to be held monthly having been designed to provide an opportunity for the young people of Liverpool to interact with the experienced proprietors of the Athenaeum and learn from their years of experience. The event shall also provide a platform for networking in an unrivalled environment designed for this very purpose over two hundred years ago. The Athenaeum is going back to its roots whilst embracing the modern day needs of the new generation in the city.

The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest continuous military campaign of the Second World War and was pivotal to the overall success of the allied forces. notice.We’re currently operating with no name but it is business as usual and we are serving breakfast, lunch and dinner 7 days a week, we’re frantically working towards a relaunch, which should happen in four to six weeks, and we’re hoping to come up with a new name in the next few days.”

What is it like to be mentored and managed by Ricky Tomlinson?Ricky is one of the nicest men I’ve ever met, he is always there for advice and full of encouragement. Along with my management team of Richard and Simon Wallace I feel that I’m always supported by a great team.

And heading the Empire! What an achievement. How are you feeling?Headlining the Empire is a dream come true! Since I was a little boy sitting in the audience I dreamed of one day singing on that stage ...and I am!

What other plans are in the pipeline this year?I will also headline at the Blackpool Grand and begin a UK tour dates to be announced, I have a show at the Greenroom [Ricky’s club] July 26th tickets on sale now 0151 922 7771.

What is your ambition?My ambition is to be a top all round entertainer and be the best at what I do. And maybe even play the Albert Hall!

Describe your musical style.My style is similar to one of my hero’s Joe Longthorne, he’s is a great artiste who can entertain an audience for a couple of hours and send them home happy, that’s my goal every time I walk on stage.

Who are your musical icons?Tony Bennett who I recently met and had a glass of wine with backstage at the London Palladium, Bobby Darin, Sammy Davis Jnr, Al Jolson, Frank Sinatra, Joe Longthorne, and of course Ricky Tomlinson!!!

What’s the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you?Best piece of advice! Straight from the mouth of Tony Bennett, “always be a singer of great songs and keep the faith” that’s what I aim to do.

Jason Donovan is back, and this time he’s wearing glitter and a codpiece, in Priscilla Queen of the Desert the musical. The show arrives at the Liverpool Empire from 20th – 25th May. Jason will reprise the role of Tick, the part he played when the show originally opened in the West End.

No, seriously it’s about a group of blokes who go on an adventure in the dessert. You’re playing the role of Tick?Yes, Tick is a big part of the journey. He’s harbouring a big secret, he’s a married man with a child and he wants to go +-%/$%"#$;#,#(%$4+%"$%"#,#$/%"#($0(#)=,$%/$1-;$"+&,#30<$%/$5#$himself and escape. Slowly the story unfolds from there.

I was a blue eyed blond haired kid when I started. My career in TV, then in music was very commercial. But now my hair has started to recede a little and I have a few lines under my eyes, so people and my peers have now started to take me seriously. I do feel that I have paid my apprenticeship. It has taken people time to understand that I have real talent and that I work really hard. I’ve been in this business for over 25 years now so I must be doing something right, right?

Plus I am really lucky that I have enough fame and recognition to be able to dip in and out of the Priscilla ride! So yeah maybe I’ll just take a break, a really long one, like for a few years!

“Sewing is the new cool” well I would say that seeing three years ago as I gave up my career in Journalism to set up The Style Factory fashion workshop studio. But thanks to the huge success of the BBC’s Great British Sewing Bee it seems the whole world is now dusting off their sewing machines, hitting the haberdashery and ‘getting their craft on’.Ahead of the trends as always, Lifestyle have invited me to join forces with them to launch a new column exploring the vibrant North West craft scene and sharing some fab projects and top tips each month....This month I’m going back to basics by looking at how to get started if you 4)-%$%/$,%)(%$,#4+-.$0/($%"#$1(,%$%+&#>Unfortunately there is a whole generation of people who seemed to have evaded learning to sew. Whether we blame schools for cutting down on textiles lessons or the High Street for selling clothes at such low prices that making our own just seems pointless, the fact remains the same, a lot of us don’t know our darts from our bobbins (yes they are both sewing terms).If you fancy having a go at making your own clothes or just knocking up some home made cushions for your bed then always start with the basics. Before you rush out and buy a top of the range sewing machine it’s best %/$ "):#$)$./$/-$/-#$ 1(,%>$ A0$ 6/*$2)-$borrow a machine from a friend or relative then that’s a great place to start.First sit yourself down with the instruction booklet or a willing teacher and get familiar with the different functions of your chosen machine. All machines will have the same basic components but they will often be in slightly different places just like a car really.Next have a go at threading up this is different for every machine and can sometimes be tricky to get your head around. However once you have done it a few times it will become second nature.It sounds obvious but practicing sewing in straight lines is essential for beginners. I strongly believe that you can make almost anything as long as you can sew in a straight line. You can

practice this by drawing some lines on a sheet of paper and then sewing straight into the paper. It’s a really easy way to improve your skills but it also saves money on fabric too.If you don’t know anyone with a sewing machine or you fancy learning amongst other beginners then joining a local sewing class, it’s a great way to .)+-$,/&#$5),+2$,=+33,$)-;$2/-1;#-2#>There are a few good basic courses run in the community by local Council’s in Liverpool and the surrounding areas 5*%$'3)2#,$;/$133$*'$:#(6$0),%$)-;$%"#6$only start on selected dates throughout the year.The Style Factory runs an Introduction to Dressmaking course in Runcorn that is designed especially for beginners who want to pick up some basic sewing machine skills and learn some professional techniques. Any chic fashionista in Liverpool will know that women’s head wear is very much on trend for spring summer, and if you can make that headwear vintage or bespoke then prepare for many a covetous glance on your

direction! Anything goes, head bands, tiaras, mini top hats, fascinators and cocktail tail hats! Interested? Then you are in luck, Liverpool has its own designer of handcrafted vintage style bespoke mini top hats and head wear! Her name is Lily and you can speak and order from her via Facebook at Titfers and Tiaras. I hunted Lily down for a quick chat on all things headwear!

Hi Lily, how long have you been doing this for?Oh I’ve been making items and hats for about 30 years! I trained as a costume and set designer in Liverpool, back in the 70's. But I’ve always had a love of hats and always wore them when I could, as often as I could! I especially love cocktail hats and my favourite designer is Philip Treacy.

What do you make the headwear out of?Anything really. Mostly I enjoy making my creations out of recycled materials; I was in USA last year and hunted around thrift shops for unusual bits to add on as decoration.

Have you sold any hats to famous people?I haven’t sold any to any famous people as of yet, but I have had some enquires from a former Atomic Kitten. I did make the runners up tiaras for the ''Alternative Miss Liverpool'' back in 2011 which was judged by Andrew Logan, the man who invented the ALTERNATIVE MISS WORLD, I made a tiara for the actress Fennela Feilding for the event!

A brilliant musician taken far too soon. Michael Molloy from Woolton, south Liverpool, was a member of the aspiring Liverpoolbased band Hostile Radio. This very talented musician, who at only 18, was one of three people who died +-$%"#$"/((+12$2/)2"$2(),"$/-$%"#$4)6$5)2=$0(/&$%"#$A,3#$/0$Wight festival “Bestival” in September 2012.His brave mother Frances now wants to get the song written by her son just two months before his death to number one, “So people can remember Michael as a musician and not just as someone who died in a terrible crash”Michael’s composition “Rise and Fall”, which features the gifted musician on guitar, has heavyweight industry backing and has been recorded by festival giant DJ Rob Da Bank. Da Bank said that regardless of what had happened he would have picked up the track to use anyway as it’s so good.The song, being released by Bestival's record label Sunday Best, will go be on the shelves and available for download on April 29th.

He’s going to play an integral part in the awards, which this year, form part of the Liverpool International Music Festival.

This is your biggest UK tour ever, how’s the preparation going?Great, the tour starts in Liverpool on the 19th April at the Philharmonic. I really enjoy being on the road and visiting different places and singing to different people.

You have been quoted as saying that you were born to do what you do, is this the secret of your success?I am not sure really, it could be! I have always worked hard and I think that is really important to being successful. If you have the right songs and have the right people around you then you can have the success. I also co write all my own songs, they come from the heart and that comes across when I perform them.

You’re are the biggest black recording artist Britain has ever had, so far you have over 30 million record sales under your belt. Yet, as far as I’ve read you have never gone off the rails, what has kept your feet on the ground, when so many other super stars have been lost to the tribulations of stardom?b6$0)&+36$"),$;#1-+%#36$=#'%$&#$.(/*-;#;$/:#($%"#$6#)(,>$I always just wanted to sing and have never been interested in the celebrity side of things. I didn’t want to get involved in all that so I managed to stay on the straight and narrow.

Many of today’s music artists come from reality TV shows such as X Factor and the Voice. Do you watch them? What do you think of this modern route to a music career?I don’t really watch those shows to be honest. I am not sure if it is the best route to a music career though as a lot of people who go on these shows haven’t had the practice needed to be a performer. There is more to a music career then just getting up and singing and I don’t think that they are always prepared for that.

Up until a few years ago you had taken 15 years out of the limelight to spend with your family, after so long away, does it feel different this time round?It feels different in the sense that there are a lot of new things that you have to be aware of now like the Internet, Facebook, Twitter and things, which weren’t around, back then. But performing is still the same except the audience is a little older now!

All the songs are really personal to me and I am glad that I recorded it with Barry Eastmond who I worked with in the 80’s.

More and more girls are playing football and taking it seriously, it wasn’t like that when I was at school a few, *ahem* short years ago.Yes, over the past 10 years woman’s football has come really far. Attitudes have changed, especially since the Olympics last year, where over three million people watched the BBC’s 4/&#-8,$1-)3>$G#,$%"#(#$+,$,%+33$(//&$%/$grow but we’ll get there, perhaps in another 10 years TV contracts will be in place and we will be able to make every player fully professional.

We have a centre of excellence for girls who show potential, from under 9s all the way to under 17s, any girl who shows a decent level of skill, we are interested. What’s the best age to start playing football?Any age is a good age but, ideally we would like them to come to us at 9 so we can develop them right the way – our way, through all the training and up through the teams. That way we gain a strongest possible team for %"#$1(,%$%#)&<$4"+2"$+,$4")%$4#8:#$./%$now.

Due to the popularity of the Olympics have you seen spectators go up?Yes, but we would like there to be more spectators. The numbers are getting higher and higher as time moves on. The football is good so people who are coming to watch are coming back again and again.

Is playing for the 1st team a career?No, unfortunately, it’s a cocareer. Over the last couple of years it has got much better but in the next 5 to 10 years with the ambition and continued success then yes eventually it will be a full time career, with a decent wage to boot! T.V contracts would help, the BBC has just come on board for the 2013 season, and ESPN are already involved, but we want to build gradually to continue to follow the natural momentum to success, we don’t want to be a fad, women’s football is here to stay!

Why did you pick those charities in particular?The reason we started raising this money was because Lee (my business partner) his sister died of cancer in the Trinity Hospice in Bispham in October

2012. They had nursed her so well until her last breath, it just made us think that we as people could actually do something to give back to them, in a way that they need. So we got our heads together and did we needed to do to win. We knew we would have to stand out, so we came up with a themed weekend event “Music Hall Tavern Drag or Bling”

The city council has completed the purchase of the freehold of the historic landmark, at the corner of North John Street and Dale

Street in the city centre, for £1.95 million levering in £18 million of investment from Runcornbased developer Ashall Property Ltd.

I have been working on my own construction projects as ever and they are really starting to take shape now. With the longer days I can get so much more done and I’m out on the site as early as possible in the mornings. Whilst the sun has been shining, it is still a little chilly and I have been glad to wear my Heat Holders with my work boots. The 2.34 TOG rating guarantees that my feet are completely warm and I can concentrate on the job at hand.

I have also been working with Silverline, a fantastic tool brand, shooting a video for their latest campaign. STAGE ONE Start off with a spirit level and pencil marking where you want the bracket to go. Place your spirit level along the side,, using your pencil, mark up both holes (some larger brackets will require three holes). Take your 18V hammer action drill driver and ensure hammer action setting is in place.

Liverpool International Tennis Tournament

Preparations are underway for the 12th annual Liverpool International Tennis Tournament

which is set to see worldclass players warming up for Wimbledon at Calderstones Park on 20 23 June.

Tournament director, Anders Borg, talks about Europe's largest Tennis Exhibition #:#-%$)-;$(#?#2%,$/-$"+,$:+,+/-$%/$5(+-.$the sport to youngsters in the city.

"Liverpool is a city close to my heart and I knew over 12 years ago that this was the place for the International Tennis Tournament. I wanted to show people what a fantastic day out it is and take the emphasis away from London where Wimbledon or Queens dominate the tennis world."

The Liverpool International Tennis Tournament has thrived since it started in 2002 and tennis greats including Martina Navratilova, John McEnroe, Novac Djokovic, Martina Hingis, Marat J)1-$)-;$ZF/(-$Z/(.$"):#$.()2#;$%"#$grass courts at Calderstones Park over the intervening years.

"Merseyside has a huge sporting heritage, best known for its worldfamous football teams, and my goal is to add tennis to this legacy.

"British participation in the game is down and part of the problem is that people think tennis is expensive and ;+012*3%$%/$)22#,,>$A-$0)2%$%"#(#$)(#$3/%,$of courts in public parks you can use for free and young people can join a club for just £30 or £40 a year."

Last year, with the help of Liverpool city council and the Lawn Tennis Association, Anders set up the Northern Vision Liverpool Tennis Foundation which organises inschool coaching, after school clubs, competitions, mentoring and a tennis academy.

"By giving more children the right exposure to tennis at an early age we can increase participation in the game and help to produce the Wimbledon champions of tomorrow.

At this year's tournament, visitors will have the chance to see some of the world's biggest tennis players and new rising stars, combined with legends of the game, compete in a purpose built centre court stadium in South Liverpool's Calderstones Park.

Guests can also expect Legends matches, an exclusive Fashion Show, bars, restaurants and a weekend of superb hospitality.
