This Year I Will Manage My Best: My Team & Me….

• By “Manage My Best”, I mean that you view YOUR TEAM & YOURSELF as YOUR BEST…not, “oh, I’ll just manage the ‘best’ I can…..”• You care about your employees, the kind of supervision you provide, & the fact

that HOW you manage affects a LOT!• You respect your team members & yourself!• You recognize that no one’s perfect & value the process of learning how to be better!• It’s CRUCIAL to believe that your employees really DO want to be great….the question: If they aren’t great, are YOU the obstacle?

Page 6: LifeServices EAP: "Manage This!" Webcast: "This Year I Manage My Best: My Team & Me!"

Let’s FIRST look at: “My Team”:IS your team “your (the) best?” If you believe so, that is awesome! You’re doing something right! How do you know they’re your best? Well:Probably a combination of: performance results, personalities, compatibility, healthy work ethic, independent thinkers & doers, etc..If so:YOU should be giving this webcast! But, you wish to be even better….right?!

Then what will it take to “Manage My Best: My Team & Me?”

Page 7: LifeServices EAP: "Manage This!" Webcast: "This Year I Manage My Best: My Team & Me!"

Or, maybe….

• You are saying to yourself: My Team is NOT functioning as well as I’d like it to…There’s issues:• In-fighting• Gossip; back-biting• Laziness• Little cohesion• Poor communication• Lack of support for each other• Jealousies• Lack of a work ethic• Suspected substance abuse• DRAMA……..

Page 8: LifeServices EAP: "Manage This!" Webcast: "This Year I Manage My Best: My Team & Me!"

If you’re really honest with yourself….

• You KNOW what’s going on either because you see it, hear, or, are in the midst of it yourself…!• OR, management has tapped your

shoulder (maybe not too delicately) to tell you that you’d better do a BETTER job, or….else?• You find you don’t possess needed skills.• You’re heart’s not into “management”

any longer…• I don’t know: only YOU can answer this…

Page 9: LifeServices EAP: "Manage This!" Webcast: "This Year I Manage My Best: My Team & Me!"

It’s 2016!!!

• Whether your team is functioning well or not…• Or, you feel you’re doing great as a manager or not, you’re here to

improve…• The year 2016 provides you another opportunity to hit the “reset”

button; a “do-over” as it pertains to your ability to effectively manage your employees.• So, let’s examine what is needed in order to Manage My Best: My

Team & Me….

Page 10: LifeServices EAP: "Manage This!" Webcast: "This Year I Manage My Best: My Team & Me!"

Excruciating honesty…doesn’t have to hurt!

Remember, you’re as human as the rest of usHave you:

• 1. Not communicated as effectively as you should have..?• 2. Not attended to issues when you should have (easier to ignore,

pass over, minimize)…?• 3. Not stood up for my team when it was justified…?• 4. Been intimidated by an employee…? • 5. Been soft on discipline; passed over enforcement of P & Ps….

Page 11: LifeServices EAP: "Manage This!" Webcast: "This Year I Manage My Best: My Team & Me!"

Getting Honest…More Considerations:

• I’ve found that management is a lot tougher than previously thought!• It’s hard becoming a manager to people with whom I worked before!• I’m fearful of upper management & don’t know how to verbalize

what my team needs; I’m afraid of being seen as “obstinate”!• I cannot BA-LEEVE the stupid things that employees do at

work…..OMG!!!

Page 12: LifeServices EAP: "Manage This!" Webcast: "This Year I Manage My Best: My Team & Me!"

You’re Half-Way there…seriously!• By being here today, you ACKNOWLEDGE that

there’s problems and/or you know you could do better: simply put!• Now, let’s see what else needs to get done.• In our “First Tuesdays @ 12 Noon” webcast

yesterday entitled: “It’s 2016; Which Paths Will YOU Choose?’, I presented ideas which pertained to creating & following-up on personal goals.• There was a section I’d like to share with you

as it can relate to improving upon your management skills as well…..!

Page 13: LifeServices EAP: "Manage This!" Webcast: "This Year I Manage My Best: My Team & Me!"

There’s a saying in AA…

• It’s “people, places & things” which the alcoholic or drug addict has to consider, contend with, avoid, or otherwise eliminate from their lives if they want to stay sober/drug-free.• I propose that these same three elements: PEOPLE, PLACES & THINGS

can ALSO HELP us to achieve our goals!• Who, where, and what……can assist you in managing your best: Your

Team & You…..?• The following only serve as a FEW examples of what could apply to you & the improvement of your team!

Page 14: LifeServices EAP: "Manage This!" Webcast: "This Year I Manage My Best: My Team & Me!"

Aligning Yourself with People

• PEOPLE equally motivated to achieve similar goals. This will go a long way to achieve your goal of improving your management skills, i.e., don’t do it alone if you don’t have to! • PEOPLE: YOUR boss, life/business coach, area business executive, EAP

counselor, self-improvement support group; LinkedIn?• Doesn’t mean the other person has to share your goal, but IS someone

who GETS IT….of similar mindset: supportive, accessible, respectful, understanding, energetic, healthy.• This is a great case for not aligning with negative people…..and, that COULD include other managers: dump THAT extra weight!

Page 15: LifeServices EAP: "Manage This!" Webcast: "This Year I Manage My Best: My Team & Me!"

Aligning Self with Places….

• If you want to communicate better with your charges, then, i.e., PLACE yourself where you can learn the skills: at seminars, on webinars or webcasts, role-plays with the selected “people” identified previously.•Wanting be more assertive with upper management

regarding team needs? Ask your boss if you could PLACE yourself in & “fishbowl” an upper management meeting.• If you want to be better organized, PLACE yourself in a

colleague’s office to see how they organize themselves.

Page 16: LifeServices EAP: "Manage This!" Webcast: "This Year I Manage My Best: My Team & Me!"

Aligning with Things……

• Want to improve employee morale? Surround yourself with encouraging MATERIALS (posters, inspirational quotes, articles), read BOOKS on related employee activities; create a fun CONTEST; plan a PICNIC, create a FUN-ONLY Committee, etc..• Want to become a calmer person (less reactionary; less stressed over

“stuff”)? Surround yourself with CALMING ITEMS: music, soothing sounds, scents, photos, inspirational quotes, clean, organized work/relaxation areas.• Want to be consistent with discipline? Refer to AND FOLLOW the COMPANY’S P & Ps (in consultation with HR).

Page 17: LifeServices EAP: "Manage This!" Webcast: "This Year I Manage My Best: My Team & Me!"

Getting Introspective…

• Having a soul-searching conversation with yourself & asking: really, WHY have I not achieved my goals in the past?• What barriers have I typically put in my OWN path? How am I my

own sabotage agent?• Why is it that I have given up? What do I fear? What inner tapes do I

choose to play over & over until I convince myself that I don’t deserve to meet my goals!?

Examples: Oh, well, I’m just like all the other managers who think this place is a joke; or, things will never change around here or, no matter what I try, I never get supported, or, I’ll never be good at this, or, they don’t pay me enough to do this! All self-defeating!!

Page 18: LifeServices EAP: "Manage This!" Webcast: "This Year I Manage My Best: My Team & Me!"

Self-Care

• Where are you at with taking care of yourself?• Holistically, how are you in: body, mind &

spirit?• Are you a credible role model for healthy

living and professional (work-related) behaviors?• Are you someone whom you feel your team

trusts? Respects?• Do they seek you out for feedback, advice,

guidance on projects OR do you find they avoid you? Why?• Again, it’s all about introspection & getting

honest with YOU!!

Page 19: LifeServices EAP: "Manage This!" Webcast: "This Year I Manage My Best: My Team & Me!"

Your Path to Choose…

To select a “path of success”, I believe one must:

• 1. Acknowledge you cannot do it all by yourself.• 2. Trust & be open to all resources.• 3. Act upon the suggested resources.

• Simple, right?

Page 20: LifeServices EAP: "Manage This!" Webcast: "This Year I Manage My Best: My Team & Me!"

Can’t do it All by Yourself…

• Working on goals in isolation leaves us without vital input from:• People• Places• Things• OBJECTIVITY, feedback, information, technical or research-based

data, positive support, & encouragement is CRUCIAL TO SUCCESS!• To rely SOLEY on yourself, YOUR own input, your personal inner

negative tapes, requires ONLY YOU to always push yourself. Why make it so hard on yourself? • To believe that we can accomplish our goals minus help is a bit naïve,

misguided, & a little arrogant…yes, I said arrogant…do YOU have all the answers on how to accomplish your goals…really? I know that I don’t! It’s OK to be wrong; welcome to the human race!

Page 21: LifeServices EAP: "Manage This!" Webcast: "This Year I Manage My Best: My Team & Me!"

Trust & be Open to All Resources

• Trust can be HUGE for anyone….!• Be selective with whom you enjoin to assist in your goal achievement;

someone acquainted with your strengths & weaknesses; they “get you”; they’ll be honest with you; they understand how important your goals are. May not necessarily BE the expert…! Or, if a trusted expert, may not necessarily know you WELL…no matter, but, do your homework• Go to the EAP; put it out there; allow the counselor to ask you

questions which, within this confidential setting, may uncover your fears, “tapes”, self-sabotaging behaviors, question how realistic your goals are, what to tweak, etc…MAYBE management work ISN’T for you!

Page 22: LifeServices EAP: "Manage This!" Webcast: "This Year I Manage My Best: My Team & Me!"

Act upon the Suggested Resources

• When all else fails, “follow instructions!” As long as you view your support person/system as knowledgeable & trustworthy, listen to them! Do what is recommended!• Ask questions; ask for clarification; be selfish;

be a sponge for knowledge!.• Track your accomplishments & boldly report

them to your support system.• Request that you be able to contact them

regularly as you proceed along your path of success!• Type up, laminate your goals and keep them in

your planner, wallet, purse, prayer book, etc…as a constant reference!

Page 23: LifeServices EAP: "Manage This!" Webcast: "This Year I Manage My Best: My Team & Me!"

Visualize the Results

• Meditate daily; 10-15 minutes in the morning; think of your main management goal as already achieved!• Surround your work or recreational (home)

area with pictures of your goal achieved: your team “meets its numbers” (& they haven’t killed each other)!• Behave as though your goal IS being

achieved; be confident; show confidence. We are ALL a “work-in-progress”!• Should you “back-slide”, brush yourself off,

get up, and get back on track. Time spent beating yourself up is time wasted!

Page 24: LifeServices EAP: "Manage This!" Webcast: "This Year I Manage My Best: My Team & Me!"

It’s 2016: Which Path will YOU Choose?• Don’t give up! • Do whatever you can to identify barriers to your management

success: fears, lack of confidence, lack of knowledge, lack of support.• Accept that which you cannot change; change what you can & “have

the wisdom to know the difference”…the EAP or a life coach can help with this!• Rid yourself of negativity in your life WHEREVER possible: people,

places & things! They will do NOTHING to help you achieve your goals! • Choose the Path of Confidence in YOU because YOU possess the answers & the ability to succeed!
