Downsizing is more than just selling your house. It is an opportunity to simplify your lifestyle and focus on what matters. Whether you are moving from a large home to a smaller bungalow or condo, or from a condo to a retirement home or care facility, you want to know about today’s real estate market. In a free one-hour lecture and one-hour Q&A, learn the facts you need to sell a home in today’s market and the steps you can take to make the downsizing process easier. Whether you are planning to sell this month or in a few years, do your homework now and be prepared.

Mandarin at Chinese Restaurants Instructor: Lacey Sheng

Have you ever been to a Chinese restaurant and wished you could surprise your waiter or waitress by ordering in Mandarin? In this course, participants will learn about China’s food, culture and table etiquette, and will practice a few key phrases in Mandarin to use during their next restaurant visit. You are encouraged to absorb as much Mandarin as you can, however the main objective is to have fun. The course ends with a Chinese Food Night at the Perley Rideau cafeteria where participants can practice what they’ve learned by ordering a delicious meal from the instructor. Please note that we will not be able to accommodate dietary restrictions for the meal component of this course. Canada’s War Art Instructor: Laura Brandon Discover the powerful history of Canada’s War Art from the 18th to 21st centuries, including official commissions from World War One and the Second World War, trench art, Indigenous art, soldier art, posters, film, photography and memorials. This course explores the relationship between war art and propaganda, as well as the role of notable artists and patrons. Participants will enjoy a richly visual learning experience, with the opportunity to view paintings, photographs, sculptures and illustrations from this remarkable part of our heritage. From Community Supports to Long-Term Care: Navigating Your Healthcare Options Instructors: Doris Jenkins & Carolyn Vollicks When the time comes to move into Long-Term Care, you and your loved ones need to be prepared with as much healthcare knowledge as possible. What should you look for when touring homes? How will your care be managed? What about food and dietary preferences? What should you bring with you? What community supports are available to you? This free course prepares you to transition into long-term care by covering key topics, including daily activities, family-focused care in a communal environment, and family and resident engagement in care. From Zero to a Million in 200 Years: Ottawa’s History in Songs, Slides and Stories | Instructor: Phil Jenkins

This course explores Ottawa’s rich history in chronological order, from the arrival of the First Nations and the Europeans to today’s multi-cultural capital city. Participants will learn how each new arrival made use of Ottawa’s geographical setting, and will discover how notable peoples, events and advancements shaped our city. Expect to enjoy a lively and enriched learning experience that includes anecdotes, biographies, illustrations, photographs and songs. Seniors and caregivers searching for new opportunities to engage their minds and bodies now have an easily accessible online resource and in-person education programs thanks to the generous funding from the Centre for Aging and Brain Health Innovation’s (CABHI) SPARK program.Perley Rideau Active Seniors (www.ActivePerleyRideau.com) is a new website supported by in-classroom resources developed under the leadership of the Perley Rideau Therapeutic Recreation and Creative Arts Programming staff and supplemented by a network of professionals. The mission: to educate, entertain and inform individuals on strategies to keep their minds and bodies active.The website, Perley Rideau Active Seniors, is not only speaking to seniors, it seeks to engage individuals of all ages and abilities to benefit from the decades’ of experience compiled by the trailblazers working in Perley Rideau’s recreation and creative arts training programs. From a rejuvenating video presentation of a meditative walk in the woods, to flower arranging for beginners, chair-adaptive yoga, laughter therapy and painting from memory, this interactive multi-media website will feature more than a dozen original videos, providing step-by-step instructions and ongoing support to ensure seniors – and others - benefit from safe, effective programs and activities.

Built on the philosophy that learning has no age limit, the Perley Rideau Lifelong Learning Program offers in-person classes in a welcoming, collaborative learning environment. Participants have the opportunity to stay active, to learn from expert instructors and to connect with others who share common interests. Courses are open to anyone with a passion for learning, including volunteers, residents of the Perley Rideau, tenants, family and all members of the Ottawa community. Courses are held in existing facilities at the Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre. Located in the Alta Vista community, the Perley Rideau is the ideal location to build an active and supportive learning environment. The centre is in many ways a village, offering apartments for independent seniors, long-term resident care, fully-equipped ceramic art and painting studios, spacious meeting rooms, a cafeteria, a pharmacy, an art gallery and more. Parking will be validated for registered participants. Caregivers who accompany participants will be admitted for free.

Instructor Bios

Laura BrandonDr. Laura Brandon is a freelance writer, curator and lecturer specializing in international and Canadian war art. From 1992 to 2015, she was the Historian, Art & War at the Canadian War Museum. She has written and lectured

internationally for nearly 40 years and curated over 45 exhibitions.

Doris JenkinsDoris Jenkins has more than 30 years of experience as a Registered Nurse. Her nursing management varies from the acute care sector, community, retirement home, and for the past 20 years in long-term care. Doris is

the Director of Nursing at the Perley Rideau.

Carolyn VollicksCarolyn Vollicks is the Director, Community Outreach and Programming at the Perley Rideau. She is a Recreation Therapist who holds a Bachelor of Recreation and Leisure Studies from Brock University, as well as

a post-graduate Diploma in Recreation for Special Populations from Georgian College.

Emily Jones Joanisse and Tas DamenEmily Jones Joanisse and Tas Damen are the co-founders of Connected Canadians, a nonprofit with a mandate to foster digital literacy skills amongst Canadian seniors and older adults. They both studied Computer Science and are part-time professors at Algonquin College, and they also hold full-time jobs in the software industry. Lacey Sheng Lacey is a trained physician from China. Since moving to Ottawa, she has obtained a Master of Health Administration from the University of Ottawa and has been working at the Perley Rideau for two years.

Lacey is a native speaker in Mandarin and also speaks Cantonese.

Phil JenkinsPhil Jenkins, who grew up in Ottawa, is a bestselling author (including An Acre of Time, an award winning history of LeBreton Flats), columnist for 25 years with the Ottawa Citizen, experienced

lecturer and performing singer/songwriter.

Joanne and Mark WilsonJoanne and Mark Wilson are both natives of Ottawa and very proud of their hometown. Parents to five boys, they are active in their community. Joanne has the designation of Senior Real Estate Specialist (SRES) working closely with seniors and their families to ensure their every need of the home selling process is met. Mark’s dad was a WWII Veteran and resident of the Perley Rideau.

Kathy TurnerAs a previous hands-on owner/operator of retirement communities in Ottawa, Kathy Turner is familiar with many of the day-to-day issues and challenges that face both seniors and their families. This

has allowed her to fully understand what is required to facilitate and manage a home transition in a professional manner.
