All About OLLI

Welcome to the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the University of Arkansas!OLLI at the University of Arkansas was established in 2007. It is one of 123 Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes across the United States, and is the only OLLI in the state of Arkansas. These lifelong learning programs are partially funded through the Bernard Osher Foundation and each is dedicated to providing non-credit courses and continuing education opportunities to adults. OLLI has NO academic prerequisites or age restrictions and is designed for adults who want to continue learning in their retirement years.

Our Mission and ValuesThe mission of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Arkansas (U of A) is to provide a community of adults with a lifelong learning venue that promotes intellectual and cultural growth through exploration and discussion via diverse, high quality and aff ordable educational programs.

High Quality Programs and Engaging CoursesThe OLLI curriculum committee annually develops hundreds of stimulating courses in a variety of fascinating topic areas. Programs range from one time lectures, tours, workshops and day hikes to eight-week seminars or study groups. Courses are engaging, innovative, lively, hands on, informative and are off ered in a variety of settings. There are no prerequisites required, no tests or exams and no age restrictions. OLLI courses provide the ideal environment for learning.

Exceptional InstructorsAlong with university professors and other educators, those who facilitate OLLI courses include experienced professionals, passionate hobbyists, researchers and distinguished scholars. OLLI instructors are there both to educate and to engage, and they love sharing their knowledge, expertise and fascinating stories.

Special Events and ProgramsIn addition to regular courses, OLLI members enjoy the opportunity to engage in monthly social and cultural events, special programs, book clubs, special interest groups, and much more. These special programs provide an opportunity to take the discussion outside the classroom, to meet new people, and to engage in unique experiences only off ered through our institute.

Teaching Opportunities

WHY TEACH AN OLLI UA COURSE?

“ The classes are simple, fun, and comfortable. The settings are informal, friendly and exciting. To me, it’s the ideal learning experience, and once you’ve taught one, you want to teach more and more classes.”

- Dr. Tom Paradise, University of Arkansas Professor of Geosciences in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts & Sciences

Share your expertise with an audience hungry for learning and lively discussion. If you are an expert in your fi eld or passionate about your hobby, we would love for you to teach a course. Current and retired University of Arkansas faculty, distinguished community members and other experts share their knowledge and insights on a wide variety of thought-provoking topics and cultural experiences driven by member interest. Our instructors leave the classroom saying it’s like no other teaching experience!

Teach in one or more class formats:

LECTURES: One-time events covering timely, stimulating and engaging topics.

COURSES: Multi-session programs designed for rigorous exploration into broad topics. Includes virtual teaching formats.

DINE AND DISCOVERS: Our widely popular luncheon series brings participants together to explore timely, stimulating topics while enjoying a meal together. Due to COVID-19 no catering will be off ered. However, participants may bring personal food and beverage items.

OUT AND ABOUTS: From the world of business and industry to the great outdoors and on to the region’s art scene, our fi eld trip series allows members to learn onsite and engage in a variety of experiences.

STUDY GROUPS: A two- to three-part series that covers a variety of subjects and engages participants in deep discussion.

VIRTUALLY VIA ZOOM: Expand your class to the community by conducting a virtual presentation via Zoom, OLLI’s supported, interactive, virtual platform.

WORKSHOPS: Fun, hands-on classes where participants actively engage in the course topic. Participants often leave with something they’ve created to take home!

If you enjoy teaching others, want to share your knowledge, or promote your business and professional fi eld within the community, then visit our website (olli.uark.edu/participate/teach/) to learn about opportunities or to submit a course proposal.

Course proposals are accepted for the fall and spring terms. The deadline for the fall term is April 30th, and Oct. 30th for the spring term.

Osher Institutes are volunteer driven organizations!

Our staff is dedicated, but small, and volunteers are vital to the success, quality and sustainability of the institute’s programs.

This fall, volunteers will be even more valuable as we work to off er divers, high quality classes in a comfortable and safe environment. Protocols are in place to ensure the safety of all volunteers and staff .

Your time, talents, and resources are valuable and greatly appreciated as we adapt to new ways of off ering lifelong learning opportunities.

This fall we are in high need of the followingvolunteer roles:

OLLI Class Ambassadors: OLLI in person classes will primarily be held at the Fayetteville Municipal Airport (Drake) with limited attendees and safety guidelines in place for all. Volunteering as a Course Ambassador provides much needed support to our instructors, staff and participants by helping to ensure that all feel safe and have a high quality experience. Activities include, greeting participants, assisting instructors, making announcements and helping clean and sanitize between classes. Any needed training will be provided and protocols are in place to ensure the safety of all volunteers.

OLLI Virtual Class Moderators: In conjunction with in person classes, OLLI will off er opportunities to access classes via a live streamed, interactive format. Virtual class moderators are needed to support participants of the online platform and the instructor. This may include, greeting participants as the log in, moderating questions and providing general support. Training will be provided to ensure volunteers are comfortable in this role.OLLI Class Ambassadors and Virtual Class Moderators ideally would sign up for half day shifts, which could include up to two separate classes. Class registration fees are waived for Ambassadors and Moderators.

adhere to social distancing protocol.

Face coverings must be worn by all participants and staff when entering and exiting class venues and in any public environments where social distancing may be diffi cult to maintain.

The institute expects the OLLI community to provide their own personal face coverings.

Those not complying with use of face coverings will be asked to leave and return with a face covering.

Only personal food and beverage items are allowed in classrooms (at certain locations only).

Participants will be asked to use

the provided sanitation stations upon entering the room.

Classrooms and meeting spaces will be cleaned sanitized and disinfected between activities and daily by the evening.

ANTISEMITISM ON THE RISEDESCRIPTION: Antisemitism in America is at its highest rate since the Holocaust. According to a recent global poll, less than 50% of those under the age of 35 have ever heard of the Holocaust. In the wake of recent deadly synagogue

shootings across the United States, there is a need to better understand both past and modern-day antisemitism. Join two Jewish-American scholars for a two-part series on the history of antisemitism and its modern-day manifestations, as well as the implications of underlying prejudice against other marginalized groups. Participant outcomes include a better understanding of the nature of antisemitism and prejudice against other marginalized groups, what factors have led to their increase, and ways to communicate eff ectively to people who are prejudiced. BAD MEDICINEDESCRIPTION: An OLLI version of the popular University of Arkansas Honors College Signature Seminar BAD MEDICINE, this course will take listeners through two lectures in the history of when medicine goes bad. The fi rst lecture, “BAD SCIENCE”, will address anatomists’ quests to fi nd sexual and racial diff erence in the body in the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. Conjecture about the “natural” role of women and diff erent ethnicities of the globe molded scientists’ world view and ensured their research would be used to justify political and social discrimination. The second lecture, “BAD DISEASES”, will look at how physicians’ views on patient culpability and inferiority infl uenced diagnoses and therapies. The focus will be on two diseases in particular -syphilis and hysteria - and the gruesome and fascinating history of these two diseases from the sixteenth century to the present. IT CAN’T DO ANY HARM: FOLK MAGIC AND MEDICINE IN THE OZARK MOUNTAINSDESCRIPTION: Class exploration includes the history and folklore around healing, folk magic, and witchcraft in the Ozark Mountain region. The time frame of our collected folklore record falls in what is often called the “old Ozarks,” from around 1830-1940. This was a time when the area was still heavily isolated, giving rise to unique cultural traditions and beliefs. The area of study focuses on medicinal plant usage (herbalism) as well as faith-based practices including the use of charms, talismans, rituals, and prayer (folk magic) in the healing process. We will also look at the theories of healing itself, including specialized Ozark “doctors” diagnosis, and names for folk illnesses, both “natural” and “supernatural”. In the fi nal class session we will also explore where we might see these folk beliefs in a modern world. We will look at how the Ozarks have changed and what new cultural infl uences might have added their healing knowledge and traditions to the area. MAD ABOUT MONADESCRIPTION: Few works of art are as enigmatic as Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, the only artwork in the Louvre to have its own mailbox. Yet in all of Leonardo’s sketchbooks and writings, there are no preliminary drawings, nor is there any mention of her. Who was she? Why did the artist spend years perfecting her image? What makes her mysterious? Mona was so famous that after she was stolen from the Louvre in 1911, people continued to visit, just to gaze at the empty space on the wall. These and other curiosities are examined, alongside an overview of Leonardo and a demonstration of his special technique, chiaroscuro, sfumato and aerial perspective. A video further

reveals the rumors and scandals that have historically surrounded Mona. Finally, participants are provided materials to try Leonardo’s techniques, with guidance from the instructor. No prior art experience is necessary. Designed for all ages, this class provides a deep knowledge of one of our most recognized artworks, from popular, historical and technical perspectives.Materials are included in the cost of the class. Come see who made the covers and what newsmakers, and non-news makers, graced the covers over more than 75 years. A little bit of art - a little bit of history - a whole lot of Arkansas. they were mystifi ed by abandoned cities at Mesa Verde, Chaco Canyon and other places. When were the cities built, who built them, why were they abandoned, and where did the inhabitants go? We will explore these questions and the partial answers provided by anthropologists and dendrochronologists (tree-ring scientists). Some mysteries remain, shrouded in the mists of time. THE LAST SUPPER, DECONSTRUCTEDDESCRIPTION: Leonardo da Vinci was a master of optical illusion. Methods used in The Last Supper were executed so cleverly and with such mathematical precision that they are unnoticed by most observers, as they are transported instead to the deeper

meaning of the work. Did you know that the implied lines in the painting converge at a single point? Why is this point just behind Christ’s right temple? What do the figures, expressions and foods symbolize? Did Leonardo utilize hammers, nails and string to lay out the design? Did his experiments with fresco cause the painting’s deterioration? Were Napoleon’s horses also to blame? Are the mysterious claims in Dan Brown’s, The Da Vinci Code, fantasy or fiction? Designed for all ages, this course deconstructs this famous work, with instructor demonstrations of aerial and linear perspective, and a selection of short videos from sources with high academic credibility, such as the Smithsonian Institute. Finally, participants are provided materials to attempt Leonardo’s techniques, with instructor guidance. No previous art experience is necessary. YOGA FOR HEALTHY AGINGDESCRIPTION: It happens overnight. Yesterday everything was normal - all your errands were done with little effort, you planted pansies, picked up the grands for ice cream, cleaned out a closet, and helped your mate organize one section of the garage. But this morning you’re sore all over. It’s not an injury. Your muscle strength is gone. You can’t bend or twist without being very careful. You move more slowly because you are afraid of falling. Standing up and sitting down resemble comedy routines. Your mind is still sharp - if you get a couple of naps in during the day! There is a solution for improving the body changes that comes with aging. Healthy aging requires one to systematically stretch and condition muscles that will protect the aging joints. The slow, exact movements practiced in Yoga will enhance strength, eliminate joint stiffness, restore flexibility and range of motion, improve agility, and improve balance. THEY ALL PLAYED RAGTIME: A HISTORY OF THE MUSIC THAT CHANGED AMERICADESCRIPTION: OLLI presenter and retired music professor, Gary Barrow, shares his love and expertise about this significant music genre. At the dawn of the 20th century, optimism was in full supply due to the exciting innovations in science, food, drink, and music. In addition to listening to examples of the music, class discussion will focus on the colorful cast of characters, including Scott Joplin, who initially created and performed the art form, as well as the resulting impact on entertainment, culture, and race relations in America. SPECIAL CLASS:COVID-19 AND THEHISTORY OF PANDEMICS

This fall, in partnership with theUniversity of Arkansas GlobalCampus and Department of History,OLLI is offering a virtual tour of six past pandemics that gripped the world and altered the course of history, as well as the current COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, these pandemics are put into context, showing both how they changed history, and are relevant to today’s current environment. Each of the six past pandemics to be looked at will include a self-paced, online module followed by a live, virtual discussion led by university faculty. You may pick one pandemic to study on its own, or enroll in all seven online modules as a comprehensive course that will:

• Introduce you to the concept of public health

• Contrast seven deadly diseases that greatly impacted world populations

• Give you a big-picture understanding of the pandemic as a phenomenon

The story of pandemics is the story of us—who we have been and who we are now as a human society. It’s a glimpse of our short-sightedness and failure, the illumination of our ingenuity, determination, and resilience, and a reminder of the precariousness of civilizations and stability itself. This is a course for anyone who wants a deeper understanding of the moment we’re living in.

TOPICS TO BE COVERED INCLUDE:• Introduction to Public Health

(Dr. Trish Starks)• Bubonic Plague (Dr. Freddy)• Smallpox (Dr. James Gigantino) • Yellow Fever (Dr. Elliott West &

Dr. Anne Marie Martin)• Cholera (Dr. Ren Pepitone)• 1918 Flu Pandemic

(Dr. Trish Starks) • HIV/AIDS (Dr. Todd Cleveland) • COVID-19 (Dr. Kelly Hammond) Dates and information about how to register and participate in this unique opportunity will be available on the OLLI website and shared in our digital e-blast.
