Message from Tonia Osborn.

The Lifelong Learning Institute is such a fantastic opportunity for all involved… including me! One of my greatest joys is representing the LLI at a number of senior expo events and public consumer shows. We are often greeted by strangers with an interest in the program, and we make sure they leave our display feeling like family! This network of senior lifelong learners is just that… an extended family! Some of my favorite experiences also include the moments I get to spend listening to the stories that have shaped the individuals that make up the LLI membership “family.” On this page, you will find images of some of my artwork. It is my honor to share these gifts of the heart with you, and it is further my privilege to be facilitating the “Art of Life” program this coming December. (See the description in the catalog for December 1st.) I’m a firm believer that a good job is one that pays the bills; while a GREAT job is one that fills the heart. I am fortunate to have both, and I am proud to be part of this family of lifelong learners! Yours Truly,Tonia Osborn email [email protected] CoordinatorLifelong Learning Institute

The Ancient Roots of Autumn Festivals, from Halloween to SolsticePresented by Judith Dann, with Rev. Brett Rizzo and Amanda Osterloh

Monday, October 19, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. & 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Location: COTC Pataskala CampusRoom 110, 8660 E. Broad St.; Reynoldsburg, OH

About the course:With origins in ancient religion, the early church, and Celtic ritual and belief, our Autumn Festivals range from Halloween to the Solstice. Each year on October 31st, as the ghosts and goblins of Halloween parade the streets and doorsteps of our neighborhoods, we re-enact remnants of ancient folk customs that pay homage to departed ancestors as well as to the souls of our loved ones who have died. These annual revivals of ancient rituals form the basis of our

contemporary American festival. Halloween has traditionally been associated in America with dressing up in costume and with consuming sweets; however, the roots of the holiday lie in late autumn harvest rituals that correspond to natural, seasonal changes and that are expressed in commemorations of the dying year. During this period of transition, cultures across the world remember those who have passed on by drawing an analogy between human death and the dark, cold winter months that loom ahead. While trick-or-treating in princess and hobo costumes, carving jack-o-lanterns, and telling spooky ghost stories (like Washington Irving’s tale The Legend of Sleepy Hollow) are traditional hallmarks of the American holiday, other cultures experience their festivals of the dead in very different forms.

About the presenters:Judith Dann is no stranger to the Lifelong Learning Institute. She is an Associate Professor in the Humanities Department at Columbus State Community College. With a Ph.D. in History and a M.A. in Classics from the Ohio State University she also received an A.B. in Classics from Miami University. Her areas of specialty include Comparative Religion, Ancient Art, and Mythology. Pastor Brett Rizzo was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. A graduate of Capital University and Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, Ohio, he has served a

number of pastoral roles including: Pastor, Emmanuel Lutheran Church-Hessville, Ohio, June 1991 – March 1995; Associate Pastor, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church-Westlake, Ohio, March 1995 – June 2001; Associate Pastor, Bethel Lutheran Church-Boardman, Ohio, June 2001 – September 2003; and Senior Pastor, Bethel Lutheran Church-Boardman, Ohio, September 2003 – May 2012. He currently serves as Pastor of Hosanna Lutheran Church in Pataskala, Ohio, where he has been since May 2012.

Amanda Osterloh is an active practicing Celtic Wiccan who has studied religion, mythology, and Pagan ways. Currently attending Columbus State Community College, she plans to transfer into Korean studies at The Ohio State University with ambitions of becoming a translator. She volunteers at the Ohio Historical society every Halloween for their “All Hallows’ Eve” event, where she prefers the Irish wake-house and the superstitions area. Her ties with the Celts comes from her great-grandmother who emigrated directly from Ireland.

“I made time to teach at the LLI because I was asked and because I had a story to tell. (I also have a book to sell, but that was not the reason I said yes!) I wanted to share the information with a group that I respect, and I was honored to be asked, as I know the quality of the speakers who have presented before me. As for my topic… What started out as an interest in genealogy and family history turned into a book about the Civil War, the KS/MO Border Conflict and the Great Social Evil Experiment of St. Louis in 1870. I wanted that information to be shared and dispersed as far as possible, plus it proves that as seniors we can begin new projects and that editors can be found who will publish our research! Plus, sharing can be fun!”

– Virgil Hoftiezer, LLI Member and LLI Instructor of “Kate: in Fact and Fiction”
