Parent & Child: Understanding the Bully School has started and the bullies are back. Are you or your child dealing with someone who delights in making your life difficult? Does this person cut you down to size and then claim that he/she was “just kidding”? Bullies are people who want what they want when they want it, and they don’t care who they have to hurt to get it. Sound familiar? Learn real-life strategies on how to hold manipulators and intimidators accountable for their mean or devious remarks; act on (vs. act out) your anger so that you don’t suffer in silence; refuse to play the blame-

shame game; stop buying tickets for guilt trips; and give schoolyard bullies (of any age) an education. If you or someone you love is dealing with someone who is intentionally unpleasant and uncooperative on a regu-lar basis, then it’s time to attend this class. NOTE: You may bring one child (age 8 and older) with you to class at no additional cost, simply provide their name and birth date when you register. For more than one child, there is a $10 per child fee; please contact Lifelong Learning directly to register more than one child at 269-965-4134.Thursday • 9/25/14 • 6-8 pm • $25PDEV CK002-01• Mike White

Making Mentoring Work for You

Not everyone is fortunate enough to have access to a personal and/or professional mentor who can help encourage growth during the more challenging episodes of life. How do you develop and strengthen impor-tant social, spiritual and personal values in the absence of a more experienced, mature role model? This class is for anyone who has ever wished for a life-seasoned special someone to provide foundational wisdom and timely guidance. We’ll talk about the importance of mentors and ways to find one, as well as supplemental sources of direction and support during the times you find your-self without a personal sounding board.Saturday • 10/11/14 • 10 am-12 pm • $19PDEV CI002-01 • Kristy Smith

Murder Most Foul: A Century of Sensational Murders in Battle Creek If you love Battle Creek history, then you’ll love this new class! Our favorite local histori-ans will share stories that cover a wide variety of crimes that are a part of our city’s past—love triangles, revenge murder/suicides, political crimes, and sordid bar fights. Some of these historical cases even went to the Michigan Supreme Court and resulted in pivotal rulings on criminal procedure. The stories will explore different aspects of our heinous history; some on the uniqueness of the crime, some on the chase to appre-

hend the criminal and some on the details revealed during the trials. You’ll discover the prominent Battle Creek figures involved in the murders, as victim or perpetrator—a beloved doctor, a successful businessman, and a future Michigan governor. You’ll be surprised both by the speed of the judicial process from crime to verdict to sentencing, and the intrusive and biased part the press played in reporting the sensational events. We hope to see you as we explore the darker side of Battle Creek’s history.Tuesday • 10/14/14 • 6-9 pm • $35HSTY CA003-01 • Mary Butler & Jody Owens

Parent & Child Classes

Parent & Child: Understanding the Bully School has started and the bullies are back. Are you or your child dealing with someone who delights in making your life difficult? Does this person cut you down to size and then claim that he/she was “just kidding”? Bullies are people who want what they want when they want it, and they don’t care who they have to hurt to get it. Sound familiar? Learn real-life strategies on how to hold manipulators and intimidators accountable for their mean or devious remarks; act on (vs. act out) your anger so that you don’t suffer in silence; refuse to play the blame-shame game; stop buying tickets for guilt trips; and give schoolyard bullies (of any age) an education.
