India has an aggregate of about 2.3 million kms of roads.
Roads are considered better than railways when it comes to# ease in building# ease in maintenance
Roads can cover more area as they can be built on slopes & hills, through forests & across streams.
Road transportation is very economical, as smaller goods and people can travel across short distances.
Door-to-door services , be it loading or unloading of sold or bought goods is easierand better only due to roads. This purposecannot be served by railways or airways.
Another advantage is its flexible services – timings and routes are never fixed. They can be changed acc. to us.
This is a major road linking project, launched by the Government of India
Plans to link Delhi-Kolkata-Chennai-Mumbai by six-lane Super Highways
Major objective : reduction of time and distance between the major metropolitans
of IndiaBeing implemented by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI)

Headquarters are called State Highways.
o Constructed and maintained by the Public
Works Department (PWD).
