Advanced Configuration Power Management Interface (ACPI)The LIFEBOOK E Series comes pre-equipped with the hardware and software prerequisites and thus is ready for ACPI.There are two modes that can be chosen in order to save power: Save-to-RAM and Save-to-Disk. The modes can beactivated via the suspend/resume button, which has to be programmed for one mode.In Save-to-RAM mode, the notebook goes into a sleep state. A few seconds after pressing the button, the user isreturned to the point where he or she left off working previously. When the LIFEBOOK E Series is placed in Save-to-Disk mode, the entire system status, i.e. the status of all applications, all installed devices and main memory, is stored on the hard disk.

Fujitsu Siemens Computers advanced cooling technologyAs processor frequencies increase, so does the heat generated. The solution that most notebook vendors use todissipate this heat is bigger and bigger fans, to the extent that some notebooks are becoming very noisy and with the fanat full speed can almost hover on the desk. Fujitsu Siemens Computers has spent years developing world’s leading HeatPipe technology that enable the heat to be carried away from the processor without the necessity of a fan.Besides this, Fujitsu Siemens Computers has also invested heavily in developing thermal analysis tools to ensure thatour notebooks are the coolest on the market.

ErgonomicsKeyboard & Palm rest supportAll LIFEBOOKs feature an ergonomically optimized, generously sized palm rest support, guaranteeing comfortableoperation even during prolonged use. Both the TouchPad and mouse buttons are responsive and ergonomic.Quick Touch application buttonsQuick Touch buttons were originally designed in order to make life a lot easier for a LIFEBOOK user. Just like on most ofthe electronic devices that are sold today, notebook users wanted some “hot buttons” which they could use to launch anapplication or perform a task quickly. They are meant to be used as shortcuts for launching your Web browser, e-mail and other applications. Using the samebuttons you can protect your notebook against unauthorized access (Security Panel).

SecuritySecurity is a crucial issue, especially in the notebook sector. Security must be guaranteed in several respects. Thenotebook has to be protected against theft. As theft of the notebook is the number one risk, a method of protecting it frombeing stolen should have first priority. The LIFEBOOK E Series can be protected against theft by using a KensingtonSlim MicroSaver, which is a 1.8 meter long, lockable, galvanized steel cable or by Targus Defcon1, a notebook alarmtool. Both can be ordered as accessories

Pre-boot securityThe LIFEBOOK E Series sports a unique Security Panel that allows pre-boot security. To enter the BIOS and to start thenotebook the user has to enter a four-digit PIN code. Once your notebook is powered on, the Security Panel buttons canbe used as Quick Touch buttons (see Ergonomics).

Hard Disk protectionWith a dual password protection based in the BIOS, the hard disk can also be password-protected. The content of theHDD cannot be read even when connected to another computer. Only 2 FSC engineers have the qualifications and toolsto reset these passwords, if lost or forgotten.

Access and data protectionAccess and data protection is of utmost importance. Mobile computing becomes more and more accepted in thecorporate market. Valuable data stored on the notebook should be protected all the better. This can be achieved e.g. bythe SmartCard reader function. With the 0Z711E1 PC Card controller from O2Micro with integrated SmartCard controller all necessary components forSmartCard usage are integrated into the notebook. When the notebook user would like to use a SmartCard in the PCCard slot, he only needs the provided SmartCard Holder, an additional external SmartCard reader is not required.

The preloaded operating systems offered by Fujitsu Siemens on E7010 and E 7110 are SmartCard-enabled OS fromMicrosoft.

An example of usage is where the user pulls his SmartCard out of the booted and working system and goes to a meetingwhile his system is blocked against unauthorised access. When the user comes back he puts the card back again intothe slot and goes on working.

In order to provide an instant usability of this unique security offer, a Standard Security Kit is delivered as standard withyour LIFEBOOK E Series. The Kit includes the SmartCard Holder which fits into the PC Card slot. A CD is enclosed, which includes not only drivers for the reader but also try&buy versions of diverse security software, valid for a period of
