I’m very excited to report that a new committee has been formed at the Chamber. Our Member Investment Committee was created to support the Member Engagement Coordinator and myself in meeting with members and communicating the benefits of Chamber membership. This group of volunteers consists of members of the Chamber Board of Directors who support the mission of the Chamber with their time and talents.

We’re happy to have the support of our business friends who want to share our message with others. So, I thought this might be a good time to review some of the benefits of chamber membership.

Starting at the beginning, a basic Chamber membership for a company with 5 employees or fewer costs less than $30 a month. Larger organizations or industries pay at a different rate, but the majority of our members fall into the basic rate. In addition to that, a member may choose to become a Member Plus for an additional 10%, or $33.50. (Check the January, 2018 newsletter for Member Plus benefits.)

For that investment, a business is automatically able to offer the Member2Member Discount program to its employees; redeem River City Gold; participate for free in our Business Bits section of the monthly newsletter; highlight events or special sales on our weekly email; receive a free listing on our website in the Membership Directory; be listed in the Chamber’s printed Membership Directory which is distributed every 2 years; hold a ribbon cutting to celebrate a grand opening, remodeling project, relocation or anniversary; participate in the many network-ing opportunities; have a free article in the Member Spotlight section of our monthly newsletter; be part of several free or inexpensive advertising opportunities; purchase mailing lists or banner ads on the website; get noticed with event sponsorships; be automatically listed on our referral lists; receive free help from the SBDC; use the Chamber conference room for gatherings or off-site activities such as interviews; and join committees working on projects that match your interests.

In case that’s not enough, we are working on the Look Local First campaign that will be avail-able to any Chamber business. It’s really a simple process. For just $25 a year, which defrays the printing and prize costs, a Chamber business can be listed on the Look Local First card. Customers locally and visitors to town can use as many of these cards as they’d like. When they make a purchase at a Chamber member business, they have the card punched for the amount of the purchase in $5, $10 and $20 increments up to $200. The maximum amount they could redeem on one purchase is $400. When the card(s) is filled, they simply return it to the Chamber for a monthly drawing for River City Gold. How easy it will be to keep shopping dollars local!

Of course, there’s also the bigger picture. The Chamber is always working on activities that help promote economic development in the area. We make trips to Des Moines and Wash-ington, D.C. to lobby our legislators on matters that are important to us, like accessible roads, updated locks and dams on the river, and safe, efficient train routes. We work on tourism and downtown development projects. Clinton Regional Development shares our space and our passion for economic development, and we work together to recruit businesses, create jobs, and advocate for the quality of life issues that make this a great place to live, work and play.

The Member Investment Committee is here to help us stay in touch with our 500 members, and to find ways to continue to enhance what we can offer. We are always available to talk to you about your Chamber benefits, so don’t be shy about giving us a call. And don’t be surprised to see one of the committee folks at your doorstep, sharing the good news about Chamber membership!

Member SPOTLIGHTIII FFC

The Indiana, Illinois, Iowa Foundation for Fair Contracting “III FFC” is a la-bor-management organization dedicated to raising standards in the construction industry. Founded in 1999, the III FFC’s mission focuses on increasing market share for responsible contractors, work opportunities for skilled craftsmen, and value for taxpayers. The III FFC staff consists of legal and policy experts as well as a team of construction analysts who monitor local industry conditions and live in the communities they serve. At the forefront of the III FFC’s initiatives is enforcing prevailing wage laws. The III FFC accomplishes this by hosting prevailing wage seminars throughout our three-state jurisdiction. As a fair contracting organization, the III FFC hosts pre-vailing wage seminars to demonstrate to public bodies that prevailing wage laws set predetermined wages and fringe benefit rates for workers in a particular lo-cality, which helps ensure workers are paid a livable wage. Prevailing wage laws also help deter out of state contractors from undercutting worker wages. The III FFC also helps enforce prevailing wage laws by participates in the Illinois Department of Labor’s (“IDOL”) annual prevailing wage survey to help enforce prevailing wage rates. By law, IDOL is required to investigate and ascertain pre-vailing wage rates in public works construction for all trades in the 102 counties of Illinois. As part of the survey, the III FFC asks the members of IUOE, Local 150 to fill out construction worker wage and benefit statements that report their hours for the month of June, showing their productivity for the month. Participating in this survey is one of the important ways the III FFC seeks to achieve its mission of being one of the most effective fair contracting organizations in the country. The III FFC also likes to recognize contractors within our jurisdiction that raise the bar in the construction industry. Contractors who support collective bar-gaining agreements, apprenticeship programs, and OSHA safety programs set a high standard for the construction industry and provide a fair playing field for competitive bidding on pub-licly funded projects. The III FFC’s contractor appreciation dinners gives us an opportunity to thank responsible contractors who care about their workforce and the quality of work they produce. For more information about the III FFC or to find out about our upcoming events, visit www.iiiffc.org or follow us on social media!

Iowashattersrecordfornewbusinessfilings

Secretary of State Paul Pate announces Iowans set a record for new business filings for the third year in a row. The Sec-retary of State’s Office is the business portal for Iowa. During the 2018 Fiscal Year, 23,649 new businesses were created in the state. The 2018 Fiscal Year ran from July 1, 2017-June 30, 2018. There were 21,665 new businesses created in the 2017 Fiscal Year, and 20,300 in 2016. The 20,000 mark had never been surpassed before 2016. “This is terrific news for Iowa and the state of our economy,” Secretary Pate said. “Each of the past three years, more than 20,000 new businesses have launched in our state, and 2018 is by far our best year ever. This shows Iowans have more income that they are willing to invest and create jobs in our state.” Secretary Pate launched a new Fast Track Filing system in June that greatly expedites registering a business with the state. The average processing time is less than five minutes during regular business hours, and less than 24 hours during non-business hours.

SocialSecurityFast-TracksDecisionsforPeoplewithSevereDisabilities

Nancy A. Berryhill, Acting Commissioner of Social Security, today announced five new Compassionate Allowance condi-tions: Fibrolamellar Cancer, Megacystis Microcolon Intestinal Hypoperistalsis Syndrome (MMIHS), Megalencephaly Capil-lary Malformation Syndrome (MCAP), Superficial Siderosis of the Central Nervous System, and Tetrasomy 18p. Compas-sionate Allowances is a program to quickly identify medical conditions and serious diseases that meet Social Security’s standards for disability benefits.

“For nearly a decade, the Compassionate Allowance list has helped us identify and fast-track cases where individuals have diseases that are most likely to be approved for dis-ability benefits,” said Acting Commissioner Berryhill. “Social Security is committed to ensuring Americans with qualifying disabilities quickly receive the benefits they need.”

The Compassionate Allowances program identifies claims where the applicant’s disease or condition clearly meets Social Security’s statutory standard for disability. Due to the severe nature of many of these conditions, these claims are often allowed based on medical confirmation of the diagnosis alone. To date, over 500,000 people with serious disabilities

have been approved through this fast-track policy-compliant disability process. The list has grown to a total of 233 condi-tions, including diseases such as pancreatic cancer, amyo-trophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and acute leukemia. The agency incorporates leading technology to easily iden-tify potential Compassionate Allowances and make quick decisions. For disability cases not covered by this program, Social Security’s Health IT brings the speed and efficiency of electronic medical records to the disability determination process. When a person applies for disability benefits, Social Security must obtain medical records in order to make an accurate determination. It may take weeks for health care organizations to provide records for the applicant’s case. With electronic records transmission, Social Security is able to quickly obtain a claimant’s medical information, review it, and make a determination faster than ever before.

For more information about the program, including a list of all Compassionate Allowances conditions, please visit www.socialsecurity.gov/compassionateallowances.

The Greater Quad Cities Hispanic Chamber of CommerceannouncesLanderosasExecutiveDirector

The Greater Quad Cities Hispanic Chamber of Commerce board of directors has promoted Zenaida Landeros as its Executive Director. Landeros is the first Latina to lead the Hispanic chamber, the only business advocacy organization in the Quad Cities dedicated specifically for the needs of the Hispanic business community. Landeros has served several leadership roles for the His-panic chamber since 2012. One of her priorities is to put the chamber and its membership out in the forefront and recognize the contributions and impact of local businesses in the Quad Cities. She succeeds Lee Vasquez, who stepped down this summer. “A challenge that many organizations face is reaching out to a diverse demographic and figuring out what they can offer to engage and involve them, Landeros has been instrumen-tal in ensuring our events and award-winning programs are relevant and successful,” said Bob Ontiveros, founder and chairperson of the Greater Quad Cities Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. “She’s very well respected in the business community.”

The daughter of business owners, Landeros brings a unique and important perspective to the Hispanic Chamber knowing firsthand the difficulties small family owned businesses go through. Founded in October 2008, the Greater Quad Cities Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will be stepping into a significant milestone of 10 years of operations. “Construction and other trades companies, restaurants, and all businesses benefit our local economy, feed our families, and help build the com-munity we live in,” said Landeros. “The Hispanic Chamber is here to support and promote our community and members.”

Landeros is a lifelong resident of the Quad Cities and grad-uated from the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business from their Executive Master of Nonprofit Adminis-tration program in 2017. She is civically engaged and sits on various boards and committees.
