A Message from your President...

Celebrating 147 Years! It seems I always start this letter with a few words about the weather. I guess that makes me a true Iowan! We’re going from beautiful 70-degree days to predictions of snow. The already swollen Mississippi River is being hammered with more rain and there are predictions of water levels to match those of the Flood of 1965. Thanks to the foresight of community leaders in the 1960’s who spearheaded the construction of the levee, Clinton remains relatively unscathed by floodwaters. Unfortunately, we’re off to a slow start for recreation on the river. Keep your fingers crossed that the water will return to normal

levels in plenty of time for summer boating and the first arrival of the American Queen in July.

Our office is busy with plans for the 147th Annual Meeting. Reserve Tuesday, June 11th for the dinner and awards presentation at Rastrelli’s Tuscany room. We’ll begin with cocktails at 5:30 and then a enjoy a pasta buffet dinner beginning at 6:00. The Leadership Institute class will be recognized, and several members will receive awards for their contributions to our community in the past year. After the awards have been given, we’ll relax and enjoy the comedy of Dan Diebert and the company of good friends. Save the date and get your reservation made early!

Planning the meeting gives me a reason to think about what we have accomplished in the past 12 months. Let’s stroll down Memory Lane together…

Biz After 5 is back and has been enthusiastically embraced. Each event grows larger as the word gets out that the second Thursday of the month is networking time for Chamber members and “not-yet” members.

We created the Clinton Progress Coalition in January of 2018. This group of people interested in helping shape the future of the community meets on the first Tuesday of every month to determine ways we can help prioritize and support the activities that will help our community grow and prosper.

Our first big event of a new fiscal year is the Annual Meeting. Last year’s Casino Night party in June brought more than 180 Chamber members and friends to the Moose Lodge for a night of fun and gambling with “fun money”. The end of July was the date for the Golf PlayDay. We enjoyed beautiful weather and 144 golfers and countless volunteers made sure a great time was had by all.

After an absence of 15 years, we hosted the 2018 Community Expo: River Cities – What We’re Make Of in October. More than 20 vendors displayed their wares to the public. To make it more interactive we prepared a little quiz about Clinton with each booth having the answer to one question. As attendees traveled from booth to booth, they engaged in conversations with the vendors and got the answer to the questions on their sheet. Completed sheets were entered into a drawing for a basket of local merchandise. Vendors and attendees alike enjoyed the game and the interaction.

In November we kicked off the Look Local – Shop Local campaign. In the first 4-1/2 months of the program we can account for $141,200 spent locally in participating stores. If you’re a Chamber member and you’d like to join the 79 other Look Local – Shop Local participants, call the Chamber and we’ll get you set up!

Planning for the Grow Clinton County day in Des Moines began in earnest early in the fall. Bad weather in January postponed the trip until later in March and we headed to Des Moines just a few days after another successful ShamROCK. We just wrapped up the month of April with the annual Father/Daughter Dance where 400 dads and daughters enjoyed a unicorn-themed afternoon of dancing and socializing.

Interspersed with the events are the meetings, ribbon cuttings, business recruitment and retention calls, public speaking on behalf of the Chamber and the CVB, legislative forums and coffees, additional trips to Des Moines or other locations within the state to lobby on behalf of 4-laning Highway 30, the hotel-motel tax amendment, and other legislation affecting our community.

There’s always work to do around here. We appreciate our members and thank you for your support of the Chamber throughout the year. We look forward to celebrating 147 Years with you on June 11th!

Maureen

River Bluff Community Foundation Announces Sixth Annual Great Give Day Thursday, May 9

The River Bluff Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque (CFGD), is pleased to announce Great Give Day on Thursday, May 9.

Great Give Day is a 24-hour, online giving day established by the Commu-nity Foundation of Greater Dubuque to celebrate and support area non-profits and build a stronger community. Since 2014, Great Give Day has raised more than $1.5 million for nonprofits across the region. Last year, the campaign collected over 2,500 gifts, attracted 562 first-time donors, and raised over $230,000 for local nonprofits. The event is open to all nonprofit organizations with endowment funds at the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque or one of its affiliate foundations. This year, 170 nonprofits throughout Dubuque, Allamakee, Clayton, Delaware, Jackson, Jones, and Clinton Counties will participate.

Community members are invited to visit www.greatgiveday.org to support their favorite participating nonprofits with online donations of $10 or more, either on May 9 or by scheduling a gift ahead of time to be automatically processed at midnight that night. All gifts will go directly to nonprofits, and all donations must be made online with a credit/debit card or with a banking account.

Great Give Day donations are 100% tax deductible, and gifts of $50 or more to nonprofits directing donations to their endowment funds are also eligible for the generous Endow Iowa 25% State Tax credit. All six partici-pating nonprofits in the Clinton area are directing gifts to their endowment funds:

• Clinton Area Showboat Theatre• Clinton Public Library• Clinton Substance Abuse Council • Felix Adler Children’s Discovery Center• River Bluff Community Foundation• YWCA Clinton

Gifts to these nonprofits will go even further on Great Give Day thanks to a generous donor, who will match donations dollar for dollar up to $10,000 across all participating River Bluff organizations.

Throughout the day, nonprofits will compete for additional hourly and grand prizes funded by local sponsors. Community members can view the prize schedule at GreatGiveDay.org to see when donations might help their favorite nonprofits win additional dollars. For prize updates, listen to KROS Radio, Dubuque stations (92.9 KAT FM, AM 1379 KDTH, 97.3 The ROCK and 101.1 The River) and follow the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter (@dbqfoundation).

On May 9, the leaderboard at GreatGiveDay.org will reflect all donations in real time — so donors can track the total amount raised as well as the progress of their favorite organizations. Visitors can search for nonprofits by organization name, zip code, or category (such as animals or educa-tion).

“The community really comes together on Great Give Day, showcasing Eastern Iowa’s spirit of giving, raising awareness about local nonprofits, and celebrating the collective effort it takes to make our region great,” said Wendy Sweeney, nonprofit partnership coordinator at the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque. “We are proud to support our region’s strong nonprofits and connect them with its generous donors through this event.”

Great Give Day is presented by the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque and presenting sponsor Theisen’s Home*Farm*Auto; Dupaco; Klauer Manufacturing; American Trust & Savings Bank; Dubuque Bank & Trust; The Vogt Group; and the Foundation for the Future of Dela-ware County. Media sponsors include the Telegraph Herald and Radio Dubuque.

For more information, visit GreatGiveDay.org, follow the Community Foun-dation of Greater Dubuque on social media (@dbqfoundation); or call the Foundation at 563.588.2700.

Citizens First Bank Makes Donation to Gateway After Prom

Citizens First Bank employees recently presented a donation to repre-sentatives of the Gateway After Prom committee. Gateway After Prom is a safe and fun-filled annual event that extends the fun of area proms at Clinton, Fulton, Camanche, and Prince of Peace High Schools. The committee is comprised of parents and volunteers who make the annual event possible.

Citizens First is a long-time contributor to the event, through a program called “Citizens First First Down,” that is hosted by local radio station KROS. For every first down the Clinton River Kings achieve during the regular football season, Citizens First donates $5 to the after prom event. This year, the contribution was $705, all of which helps to defray the costs of entertainment for the 400+ attendees at Gateway After Prom. Gateway After Prom is a group effort, with parents from 4 schools (Camanche, Clinton, Fulton and Prince of Peace) coming together to organize an event that offers area high school students a fun place to gather after prom. Parent and volunteer Janet Buer stated, “It’s a lot of fun for the students, and we work hard to provide entertainment options that the students will enjoy. We are fortunate to have the support of local businesses, including Citizens First.”

Entertainment this year at Gateway After Prom will include: bingo, laser tag, inflatables, games, prizes, drawings and an appearance by nation-ally recognized mentalist and hypnotist Brian Imbus. Escape rooms will be back again this year, they were a very popular addition to last year’s event. Prizes will be awarded to teams with the shortest recorded time to escape. After Prom will be held on May 11, 2019 from 11pm – 3am at Clinton High School.
