Mobile Innovation Drives Higher Productivity

LIFE TECHNOLOGIES, INC.CASE STUDY

Identifying Leading Edge Technology to Drive Company Goals Life Technologies enjoyed an exceptional year in 2009, despite a global economic crisis. The company grew both the top and bottom lines by executing on three strategic imperatives: focusing on their core business, integrating the two companies awlessly, and investing for future growth. With a market that remained depressed, however, success in 2010 would depend heavily on being able to continue perform-ing against these strategic objectives.

Company executives including Manoj Prasad, Vice President of Enterprise Architec-ture, Global Applications and Testing at Life Technologies, and their teams worked to assess factors essential to helping the organization perform against the strategic vision. The Enterprise Architecture team—a strategic subset of the company’s Business Intelligence (BI) division-- contributed to the eort by identifying and assessing productivity tools that could help increase employee productivity, leverage the company’s existing technology investments and increase customer satisfaction. Impacting these factors, Prasad’s team knew, would go far in attaining the desired corporate metrics, With these criteria in mind, mobile devices quickly found their way to the top of the tools list.

Dramatic improvements in mobile computing had occurred over the last few years, enabling devices to perform to enterprise standards. Smartphones, with improved security and graphics capabilities and larger screen sizes, could now provide the desired mobile visualization and technological capabilities vital to increasing business productivity. The ability to deliver secure, interactive visualizations of business-critical data to on-the-go employees was now possible and as such, mobile Business Intelli-gence (BI) was pinpointed as a strategic business priority for 2010.

Life Technologies created a Mobility Center of Excellence (CoE) team -- a group of Life Technology leaders representing all divisions -- to identify, assess and structure the organization’s mobile capabilities. One of the rst decisions made by the team was determining the immediate need for technology that could easily and eciently extract data from the corporate SAP BusinessObjects and IBM Cognos Business Intelligence systems and deliver it to employees' mobile devices for smarter, on-the-go business information management.

A BIOTECHNOLOGY GIANTLife Technologies Corporation (NASDAQ: LIFE) is a global biotechnology tools company dedicated to improving the human condition. Their systems, consumables and services enable researchers to accelerate scientic exploration, driving to discov-eries and developments that make life even better. Life Technologies customers do their work across the biological spectrum, working to advance personalized medicine, regenerative science, molecular diagnostics, agricultural and environ-mental research, and 21st century forensics. Life Technologies was created by the combination of Invitrogen Corporation and Applied Biosystems Inc. It had sales of more than $3.3 billion in 2009 and 9,000+ employees in 160 countries.

Recognizing the RequirementsThe Enterprise Architecture team began the search for a mobile Business Intelligence (BI) solution that would not only provide BI reports to mobile devices on-demand, but also oer an easy-to-read, easy-to-navigate user interface. Additionally, the mobile system would need to leverage existing BI reports with little or no new development. As critical, the technology would also have to meet Life Technologies’ enterprise-level security needs for data storage, access, transmission and on-device security. Both the Enterprise Architecture and the Mobility Center of Excellence teams were condent that by deploying the right mobile business intelligence solution, the company would experience a signicant boost in productivity, competitive advantage, and ultimately, customer satisfaction.

Dening the Real Enterprise PlayersThe Mobility CoE team, led by veteran enterprise architect Rama Katragadda, assessed players in this mobile technology market. Technology oerings other than Roambi were reviewed but not chosen for this initiative due to their lack of support for the iPhone as well as their limited functionality. The CoE team also discussed developing an application internally but realized the eort would be extremely time consumptive and resource intensive. The team then reviewed Roambi, a mobile data-visualization application that transforms existing BI reports from various data sources into interactive mobile dashboards for any iPhone or iPad.

The Roambi system impressed the Life Technologies’ team with its compelling dashboards, easy to integrate technology and true mobile device designed architec-ture. Roambi dashboards were deployed based on their ease of use, ability to support Life Technologies’ multiple existing backend BI systems, unmatched user interface and overall end-user experience. The Roambi technology oered a variety of small-screen-friendly options for viewing and interacting with critical business information that best suited Life Technologies’ requirements.

We have always relied on business intelligence systems to help us identify important sales trends, but we needed a better way to get that critical data to our mobile employees while they were out in the eld. Roambi delivers visually rich mobile dashboards to any iPhone or iPad, enabling real-time analysis and decision-making. With Roambi, our IT depart-ment is able to easily develop and distribute mobile reports that ensure our sales force and executives are always connected to the pulse of our business.

familiar with iPhones and iPads only required a brief explanation on accessing the Roambi application and dashboards. For others, a short 15-minute session to introduce the iPhone/iPad and Roambi function-ality had them ready and in play.

Roambi Meets the MarkLife Technologies’ executives have welcomed the Roambi dashboard reports, and their use by all pilot team members is fervent. Enthusiasm is spreading as the BI IT team reports receiving daily inquiries from internal groups across the organization requesting dierent reports to be made available via Roambi dashboards. Additionally, Life Technolo-gies executives have been rm in their assessment of the power of having business critical information at their ngertips – anytime, anywhere. Leo Stevens, Head of Global Sales Operations for Life Technologies, is one of the more vocal supporters.

A true road warrior, 80% of Stevens’ time is spent out of the oce. When at corporate headquarters, Stevens meets daily with C-level and sales executives. He shares that having Roambi on his iPad increases his productivity and as importantly, increases his value to the company. Stevens accesses his Roambi dashboards at least 10 times a day and recognizes that having this information handy improves his ability to make quicker, more informed decisions.

“When travelling, it may take me close to 15 minutes to power up my laptop and search my email for the right information,” said Stevens. “With my iPad and Roambi dashboards, I can access the information I need in just a few seconds. My time is spent making decisions and not wasting time trying to access information.”

Continued Stevens, “At a senior level, when the discussions are about how to continue making the company protable or other business imperatives, you are of most value when you have all the information required at hand. Roambi dashboards provide access to the informa-tion I need to ensure I consistently provide value in all my business interactions.”

The Deployment StrategyChoosing Fertile Ground Life Technologies chose a top-down, seeding strategy to introduce Roambi to executives within the sales, operations, human resources, project management and nance divisions. The goal was to create excitement and demand for the technology while implementing a replicable, phased program. Rolling out to broader audiences would occur when initial pilot successes had been documented and an ocial hand-o of the Roambi technology from the Mobility CoE team to the company’s BI delivery team was achieved.

The group also determined that a successful pilot would depend on judicious use of the Roambi application. As such, the team did not develop exhaustive numbers of reports but instead focused on identify-ing the set of on-the-go activities performed daily by division leaders and generated Roambi dashboards to support these eorts.

Going Live! The rst pilot was conducted with the company’s senior executive sales sta. The Mobility CoE team met with executives to determine what reports they required, and then developed the Roambi dashboards. The initial mobile reports chosen provided daily sales targets and forecast information by year, region and sales teams. The Life Technology executives were pleased that the dashboards, provided via the Roambi SuperList and Catalyst Views (pre-designed templates), allowed for drill down capability with a simple, one touch format.

The second pilot was run with Life Technology’s Global Sales Operations executives. Reports were developed and presented via the Roambi SuperList and Catalyst dashboards to provide the group with extensive updateable sales and inventory information and reports.

End-user training for the new mobile system was minimal, as those

Program Success Although still in the rst year of usage, the Roambi pilot programs have garnered support and acceptance from all quarters of the company. Over 400 iPads have already been distributed between executive and sales sta. Additionally, the Sales Operations pilot has met with such success that, at Stevens’ urging, the initial pilot scope was expanded to include the company’s Field Sales group. The extended pilot has incorporated an initial portion of the 650 person U.S. team and Stevens has plans to expand the program to incorporate the majority of the team by year-end. This eort will be quickly followed with global participation in 2011.

To support this broad distribution, the Mobility CoE team is creating 1-2 minute video training clips that will be accessible directly from each iPhone and iPad.

Shared Stevens, “The new pilot is geared specically at improving accessibility at the eld level. Many times, a sales rep might only get a few minutes with a customer. If you can provide validation and immediate access to data, your value and benet to the customer goes through the roof.”

In terms of protocol and structure, the Roambi mobile system has met the Mobility CoE’s success criteria and the technology has been ocially handed over to Prasad’s BI delivery team as an ocial, approved Life Technology enterprise application.

Equally as impressive, the company’s mobile BI initiative was recently honored at the ComputerWorld Best Practices in BI and Analytics awards program. Chosen as the winner from nearly 90 dierent submissions, Life Technologies’ initiative was privileged to be distinguished for using Roambi to integrate business intelligence across the organization. This top honor recognized the success Life Technologies has had in creating, integrating and sustaining business intelligence throughout the company and acknowledged the company’s business leadership eorts to leverage leading edge technology in support of their business.

When making long reaching business decisions with my colleagues, I want to have the numbers in my hands. I want the decisions we make to be based on real time facts and up to date data. With Roambi, this information is easy to get to and I can access it in just a few seconds.

What the Future Holds Over the coming year, Prasad’s team will build on their success and leverage Roambi mobile technology to empower their HR, Finance, Project Management, Services, and Operations teams with new pilot initiatives. Specically, the HR team’s rst plan is to incorporate the company’s 9000 person, employee directory into a Roambi Cardex dashboard, providing each individual’s contact information in one view. Alongside this, Product Management executives are looking forward to tracking the health and status of all Life Technology projects in one easy to access mobile report.

Providing sales executives with real time information, paring back paperwork and unlocking workers from their time-consuming desktop hold are now a normal way of conducting business for Life Technologies. By providing Roambi interactive mobile dashboards to the company’s on-the-go workers, Prasad’s team and the Life Technologies executives involved are condent they are making huge strides in increasing their individual and collective teams’ productiv-ity. Additionally, they are empowering themselves and their teams with data and knowledge to provide customers and key constituents with the highest levels of service. By putting forth these maximum eorts, they know they are eectively working to drive the organizations’ charter and 2010 success.

Check back in the spring of 2011 to read more about the impact of these mobile initiatives on the organization!
