HEY say that no good deed ever goes

unpunished. It’s a proverb that resounded loudly with me last week and I thought that I would share with you a saga that I am still coming to terms with.

Roughly a year ago I was alerted to the fact that the Dolphin Coast Residents and Ratepayers Association DOCRRA was in jeopardy of folding as the entire committee had resigned and unless volunteers could be found to keep this body going, it would be lost. Now, you might say, who cares…after all, if it was a vibrant community spirited association, valued and supported by of most of those who live here, there would be no danger of this happening. But this

was apparently not the case at that point in the history of the association and, for a moment, it looked as though DOCRRA was no more.

But effective ratepayer associations are enormous assets to communities in which they operate in South Africa, particularly when it comes to negotiating the heavily politicised arena of local government service delivery. Without an active representative body looking after the interests of ratepayers, the tendency is for local government to operate autonomously. This can, and often does, lead to acrimony if ratepayers feel that they are getting a raw deal.

So I and a handful of others volunteered to take over the reins to keep DOCRRA going.

From the outset it was apparent that the association was in a shambles. There was no accurate database of members – there had been one once, but the gecko-spattered, crumpled print out that we received along with a couple of other documents outlining a long-standing feud with the municipality and not much else, was largely obsolete.

Our first order of business was to try and rebuild the membership by creating an interactive website and inviting people to join us. This we did through the local media, live activations and social networks but it has by no means been an easy task and, to date out of 129 000 registered voters in our region most of whom would benefit hugely from a strong ratepayers association here, we have fewer than 150 paid up members. What happened to the thousands of members that DOCRRA claimed to represent before we took over? Were these numbers genuine and, if so, where have all the former members gone? That’s a good question and one that we have been trying to answer to get the association back on track.

Following an exciting AGM last

week we now have a more robust committee of volunteers and, hopefully, we will now see substantial growth in membership. This will allow us to engage with the community more effectively to tackle the issues of concern to all of us. After all, first class service delivery is the aim and it is our intention to facilitate this here. Why anyone would want to derail this process is beyond me, yet there was an attempt to halt our AGM on procedural grounds by a handful of people who obviously had a different agenda.

I am never impressed by those who actively seek to instigate dissent when there are much more important issues at stake.

All I wish to do here is to give back to the community that has over the years so warmly embraced Life & Style in its various forms and created a livelihood for my family and all who work with us. Hopefully my small contribution will lead to bigger things and DOCRRA will again become a functional ratepayers association to help build a region that we can all be truly proud to live in.

Please join us online at www.docrra.co.za and make your mark towards establishing world class service for all on the Dolphin Coast.

With your support it will happen. Without it we can’t do much – so, in effect, the choice is yours.

4 GENERAL INTEREST 04 -17 May 2016 IN P R I N T , O N A I R O N L IN E

THE past year has been an interesting learning curve for the Dolphin Coast Residents and Ratepayers Association

– a statutory body mandated to engage with local government on behalf of civic society in our area. Our mandate is to ensure that municipal services are delivered at an acceptable level and to keep a watch on the local fiscus. Without this association, there is effectively no watchman looking after the interests of residents and ratepayers in these matters.

Roughly a year ago, the present committee was formed in an attempt to keep the Association alive following the resignation of the entire former committee. What was apparent from the outset, was that the database of members that we as the incoming committee received back then, was inaccurate and largely obsolete. The Association membership tally had largely been created by levying a nominal charge on members of various bodies’ corporate and homeowners associations in the area. This charge was in essence, a discounted DOCRRA membership fee that was added to their annual property levies, although most payees did not seem to know or care that they were in theory de facto DOCRRA members

This, together with a relative handful of individual members, created a credible membership figure on paper, but there was no way for us to communicate directly with this notional membership to verify their credentials. Furthermore, there was no functional website or any other proprietary communication tools that we could work with in this regard.

We considered it important to rectify this situation by creating a new database to establish who we were mandated to represent and what our membership was expecting from the Association. To this end we commissioned an interactive website to facilitate effective communication and to establish a viable database with ease of access and secure online payment portal.

To assist those resistant to signing up online, over December we held two live activation membership drives at the Lifestyle Centre in Ballito.

Yet despite our advertising, editorials in print, local radio and social

networks, out of more than 20 000 potential members, just 131 have joined the Association so far.

There currently appears to be little interest in joining DOCRRA from the community that we are supposedly mandated to represent.

Possible reasons for this are:• HistoricThe Association has a historic profile of old white privilege often in conflict with the new order.• GeographicAs many residents and ratepayers live in gated estates with home owner associations and bodies corporate looking after their collective interests, there seems little need to join an additional association.• Social

Until a general crisis looms, especially one that threatens the bank balance, there is a certain amount of apathy in sectors of our society with regard to social cohesion as our political friends choose to call it.

This was the case last year. The Water Crisis hit the area shortly after the new DOCRRA committee was formed and we reacted swiftly to the programme of fines implemented by the Ilembe District Municipality through Sembcorp Siza Water for excessive water usage. A public meeting was held under the auspices of the Association where members of the public were invited to engage with both the Mayor of the Ilembe Municipality, Clr Welcome Mdabe, and the CEO of Sembcorp Siza Water, Shyam Misra. The meeting organised by DOCRRA was the largest public gathering of this nature in the history of Ballito. DOCRRA was able to negotiate a moratorium on all fines issued and agreed to form a steering committee to explore viable alternatives that would encourage significant water savings without compromising the local economy too severely.

Not everyone was happy with the outcome – but the net result was a scrapping of the fines and the implementation of a more equitable ‘User Pays’ scenario that has resulted in a significant and sustained water saving that continues to this day.Without DOCRRA’s intervention, we could well have been in crisis mode

today.Still, most of those

who benefitted from our efforts, have yet to join the Association.

The establishment of the Urban Improvement Precinct, a well-funded initiative by commercial property owners in Ballito has further caused people to shy away from supporting the Ratepayers Association. After all, they say, look at how effective this initiative has been so far in cleaning, greening and securing certain parts of the town.

But where initiatives like these have been most successful is where they partner with ratepayers associations that are similarly resourced by membership fees and where people are employed to ensure that selected projects are implemented, managed and delivered upon to the benefit of all in the community.

In this scenario the volunteer committee acts as a board of directors, representative of the community that it serves. There are many examples of this in the Western Cape, Gauteng and even on our doorstep in Umhlanga and Hillcrest.Despite the challenges we have been quietly working behind the scenes.

DOCRRA has:• Engaged with a Fibre Optic service provider called Link Africa to create a high-speed fibre optic internet cable network for the greater Ballito area. They agreed to do this provided they saw sufficient uptake from the community. This required residents to go onto a website and indicate their interest in using this service in a non-binding survey. We advertised this extensively on radio and in print yet there was insufficient engagement from our community so, sadly, the deal has been put on hold for the time being.• Negotiated with taxi associations, ward councillors, a major property developer and the Kwadukuza Municipality in an attempt to resolve the taxi rank issue in Ballito. Progress has been made in establishing a site for a permanent taxi rank and but there is still a long way to go as there are various agendas playing out in this arena.

Engaged with the municipality with regard to the establishment of an equipped playground for children in Townsend Park. Progress has been made but as the park belongs to the Dept. of Public Works, we are awaiting a decision in this regard.• Mediated in a matter between a corporate DOCRRA member and the KDM with regard to legal issues that are confidential but which we believe are in imminent reach of settlement. Negotiations continue.• Established a regular Consumer Watch press column and radio feature to identify budget saving opportunities in the local economy. This, I am happy to say is proving to be popular and is ongoing.• Objected to and were able to stop the planned expenditure of an excessive amount of ratepayers’ money on a Valentine’s Day Party by the KwaDukuza Municipality.

There are those who say we should be doing more. We should be communicating more regularly with our membership. We should be attending more council meetings. We should be challenging the municipality more on matters of finance and expenditure. We should be recruiting more members.

And I agree with all of this. The reality is that we are currently a committee of five, all of whom have pressing personal or business commitments and we need help to grow the Association if we are to become a force to be reckoned with.

I believe that the way forward is clear. We need to change our strategy and engage directly with Home Owners Associations, Bodies Corporate, local media and any other clusters that have access to potential members. We need to concentrate on building membership based on clear objectives and effective communication.

With significant membership numbers we can build an association like the many around the country that are delivering spectacular results.

To do this we need people who are prepared to commit time and energy to help us.

We have access to the local media, we have laid the foundations for what can become a really strong association.

Now we need you to step up and volunteer to join the committee if you have what it takes to get things done.

As present chairman of the association, I am excited about the possibilities of what we can achieve going forward but I am equally prepared to step aside and make way for new energy if that is what the new committee calls for.

Finally, I extend my thanks to you who have joined us and urge you to spread the word to help build an Association with enough support and influence to truly deliver in our quest for world class service on the Dolphin Coast.

TINA COWLEY developed the unique “Cowley technology assisted reading methods” to overcome her son’s reading

problem. Her research revealed that reading dysfunction that had in the past stigmatized many children in the education system as backward.

Statistically this is a serious problem in South Africa but the Cowley reading centres are achieving an 8% to 40% increases in student averages.

This is achieved through a scientific test of your child’s reading ability to fully understand the problem. They then work systemically to ensure that all micro systems work together as a macro systems to address all the basic skills of reading. After the initial assessment the results are discussed with you, to determine what therapy

will be done on a weekly basis. Students then receive therapy once

a week for an hour, depending on the test results.

The Tina Cowley Reading Centre was opened recently in the Ballito Buzz Centre in Moffat road, Ballito with much excitement. With Cowley reading methods, results are guaranteed.

Albert Einstein, possibly the greatest scientist of all time and a name we most commonly associate with genius only started reading at age 11. By the age of twelve he was a brilliant mathematician and physicist, despite not being gifted in language.

THIS DIY KITCHEN WALL ORGANISER WILL TOTALLY INSPIRE YOU

Laura Gummerman, like so many people, wanted a little more storage space in her kitchen. There was a bit of blank wall space just right for a storage solution, but instead of adding a cabinet or open shelves, she decided to make her own hanging storage caddy system! Here’s how she did it.

The only items required for this project were three metal towel racks, a few metal shower curtain rings, bamboo utensil holders, and a power drill.

Once she’d mounted the towel racks, she just drilled holes into the utensil holders, threaded the curtain ring through the hole, and then hung it up! Voila! So simple, and a pretty great way to store tools and make use of available wall space. We love it!

New Handmade Lagoon Tables Made From Resin and Cut Travertine Marble

AN’T wait to leave everything behind and go on your dream vacation? Before we offer you quick time travel tips let’s consider if maybe there is a way to bring that dream destina-tion to your living room instead?International designer Alexandre Chapelin, makes these exquisite nature-inspired tables. Chapelin explains how it’s done: “The La-

goon model is a coffee table sculpted in a Travertine piece of marble. We sculpt a drop to show the slopes of the lagoon. We then add the resin step by step in order to recreate the volume of the ocean in the table.“As the tables are hand-crafted, no two are the same: “I’ve always respected the difference between people, their person-alities and characters and I believe this should reflect in the interior design of their own homes. Therefore, no two people own the same table of my creation,” says Alexandre.Just don’t bother Alexandre with fancy names: “do never try to label our concept, the only labels I will ever be interested in are the great wines labels,” … Wise words.

1 PAINT A WALL – Noth-ing transforms a space like a splash of colour. Paint an accent wall, a whole room or a piece of furniture with autumn’s warm palette (think rusty reds, burnt oranges, spicy yellows, deep burgundies and earthy browns).

2 INTRODUCE A TOUCH OF BRASS, COPPER OR GOLD – From urns and bowls, to lamps, candleholders and framed mirrors, brass, cop-per and gold have a certain warmth to them. If you have the space over a kitchen island, install a pot rack for your copper cookware. Or hang a series of gold-framed mirrors on a wall that could use a facelift.

3 DO A FURNITURE SWOP – Where possible, swop out glossy, modern furniture pieces for natural and rustic wood alternatives.

4 HANG MORE CURTAINS – Add more layers to your window treatments and replace summer sheers with lush, heavier fabrics. A change of hardware could also be in order, so think new curtain rods (wood instead of chrome) or rustic tiebacks.

5 ADJUST THE LIGHTING – Take a look at your lamps and lighting, as it makes a huge difference to the feel of a space. Add some low, soft lighting to your bed-room – a bedside lamp with a low-watt bulb (40 or lower) is a good place to start. Also change bright, summery

lamp

shades for more subdued

tones perched

on wooden bas- es.

6 BULK UP YOUR BEDDING – Introduce layers to your bed for the autumn months; from additional pillow pairs and a decorative throw, to a quilted blanket. Volume is the most important goal here – to make your bed look like some-thing you want to sink into. You could even upholster the headboard in a fabric and shade that ties together all the other autumn elements you’ve introduced.

7 PILE ON THE THROWS AND CUSHIONS – Scatters and throws are a decorator’s best friend; they are

readily available, come in every colour, fabric and pattern, and they’re budget-friendly too. Em-brace a mix of textures and add some varied fabrics in warm co-lours to couches, armchairs and beds. Chenille, faux-fur, velvet, mohair, crochet and bulky knits are perfect choices for autumn.

8 FILL YOUR FIREPLACE WITH CANdlES – A blazing fire adds the best cosy feeling to a living room during winter. Since we’re not quite there yet, light up a collection of candles inside your fireplace for a warm glow. When winter rolls around, you can line up pillar candles on the fireplace mantle and

enjoy a log fire. It might be a good idea to rearrange some furniture or add extra seating to shift focus to the fireplace in the meantime.

9 COVER BARE TABLE-TOPS AND ADD FLOOR RUGS – Set the dining-room table with a runner in the colours of the season, topped by a leaf-patterned bowl, for instance. And drop thick-pile floor rugs in neutral tones in well-travelled spots around the house (layer them for even more can’t-wait-to-take-your-shoes-off cosiness).

10 BE INSPIRED BY NATURE – Bring in natural elements where possible, like coffee-table centrepieces fea-turing pinecones, sprigs, berries, spicy fragranced candles and vivid-coloured leaves from the garden. Floor vases containing weathered branches and tall dried stems are another wonderful way of bringing autumn indoors.

Turn grocery-store staples into clever tabletop details

for your Mother’s Day brunch or other celebrations. Fresh asparagus stalks cleverly embellish a pretty centerpiece and hold place cards; a knot of chives decorates a napkin.

For the centerpiece, wrap a cylindrical vase with two rubber bands, then slide stalks under the bands to cover the surface. Secure with twine and remove the bands. Fill with your favorite flowers; a bit of water in a bowl will keep the decoration fresh. For place card holders, cut three asparagus stalks to an even length, tie with twine, and slide a card between the tops.

Look to your china collection for captivating vase ideas. Here, lilies of the valley in teacups provide sweet touches. Florist frogs hold stems steady. Use several of these as a centerpiece, or put one at each place setting as an accent.

CULMINATING in a live draw and peaking the curiosity and delight of local shoppers and travellers alike, three hopeful

and very excited finalists, together with an enthusiastic crowd of family, friends and curious shoppers and travellers, gathered at King Shaka International Airport on Tuesday 26 April 2016 for the grand finale of just one of the airport’s all-inclusive and fun campaigns, the Shop & Win a Car competition!

The competition, which would see a very lucky shopper drive away in a brand new KIA Rio valued at R247 000, took place at King Shaka International Airport from 16 January 2016 until 31 March 2016. By simply spending R200 or more, collectively, in one day at any of the various stores at King Shaka International Airport, anyone could enter by filling in a form and attaching their slip(s).

For the thousands of entries that were received, the three finalists, namely Silindile Jwara, Fred Weller and Elizabeth Ferreira, were contacted with the exciting news and were invited to attend the live draw where they each had a one-in-three chance of winning the KIA Rio! On the big day as the moment approached, in front of a cheering audience, each of the finalists were asked to select out of a bag a set of car keys. One by one, with plenty of eyes watching nervously, they would approach the car and put the key in the ignition … whoever held the key that would start the engine was the new owner of a brand new KIA Rio!

IT WAS ELIZABETH’S KEY THAT STARTED THE KIA.

With tears flowing, her face buried in her hands and overwhelmed with happiness, Elizabeth couldn’t believe she was the owner of the brand new Kio Rio. “I won, I won! I can’t believe it; I won! Is

this really happening?!” When asked about how she had entered, Elizabeth told us that over Valentine’s weekend, she had joined her family on a very special cruise where her son proposed to his girlfriend. On their return, while waiting for their flight at King Shaka International Airport, they decided to have a bite to eat at Mugg & Bean, after which she grabbed some sweets from Sweet Treats, and bought a gift for her mom from Exclusive Books. She even pleaded with a friend to kiss her entry form for extra luck and slipped it into the entry box. Little did she know that such a special trip would lead to such a big win!

“I’d like to thank King Shaka International Airport, Airports Company South Africa and KIA for this incredible prize. I’ve never won anything, and I cannot believe I have now won something so amazing!

MONEY SAVERS

Here are some useful ideas to make your money go a little further which, in these rather difficult economic times, can make a world of

difference.

Email Pam on [email protected] and let us help you in the quest for fairtrade and good value.

Entertaining is very expensive these days, so start a new trend and have a “pot-luck” dinner where everyone brings something. Alternatively, have a travelling or progressive dinner where the starter is eaten at one house, the main course at another and the dessert at a third guest’s house.

A very good point I picked up was this, and it is very valid. Most of us stock our garage with items we have no space for anywhere else, so the poor car (of much greater value than all the bits and pieces put together) ends up on the drive way in all weather. This is one of your biggest investments, and the air at the coast is very destructive. Make room in your garage to use it for its intended purpose – to protect it and

keep it safe!Don’t look at a special as a bonus or

reduction on an item you were going to but anyway with the thought that you have now saved R10 on your budget, buy as many as you can afford and save a lot more. We never know when that particular item will be on special again.

Keep some frozen veggies in the freezer. I spoke recently about buying fresh as opposed to processed and how much we can save, but frozen foods are vegetables etc. at their best and most nutritious, and there is no waste, and they’re convenient. However, don’t put them in a pot of water and boil all the nutrients away!

•Prince’s Paisley Park estate will become a museum.

The Purple Rain hitmaker - who died at the age of 57 at Minnesota compound on Thursday - is set to have his home turned into a lasting memorial for his fans to remember the music legend, according to his grieving family. And it seems turning the compound into a museum was exactly what Prince wanted as his collaborator and former lover Sheila E revealed he had already begun work on a preservation project before he died. Sheila told Entertainment Tonight: “We’re hoping to make Paisley what he it to be. He was working on it being a museum. He’s been gathering memorabilia and stuff from all the tours, like my drums and his motorcycle. “There’s a hallway of his awards and things, which he really didn’t care about too much, but he displayed it for the fans because he knows that they would want to see it.

•Britney Spears is reportedly considering adopting a child from Malawi.

The 34-year-old pop superstar already has two sons, Sean, 10, and Jayden, nine, with her ex-husband Kevin Federline but she has been thinking about expanding her brood. And Britney - who is currently single - thinks it would be wonderful to give a disadvantaged youngster from the African nation a new start in America just like her idol Madonna did when she adopted David and Mercy.

•X Factor UK winner Ben Haenow is planning something very special for his SA fans.

Not sure who Ben Haenow is? Here’s the lowdown: A landslide winner on the X Factor UK under the mentorship of Simon Cowell in 2014, Ben’s winner’s single Something I Need was the Christmas No 1 as well as being the second fastest selling single of that year in the UK, achieving platinum status both there and in South Africa. And now, together with Sony Music Africa, Ben is asking you, his SA fans, to show him some love by sharing pics and videos of yourself singing his brand new single, All Yours. Simply tweet your pic or video with the hashtag #AllYoursSA and you could be featured in a fan video!

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN HERBAL TINCTURES

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

High-proof alcohol (at least 80 proof). Vodka or brandy works well.Alternative to alcohol if necessary: high quality

apple cider vinegar. Organic, if you can find it.An herb of your choice: fresh or driedA pint jar (16oz) with a tight-fitting lidSmall, dark glass bottles for storing the tinctures.

Cobalt or amber glass are great, and should have tight-fitting screw-on or snap-down lids.A fine strainerFine cheesecloth or muslinA bowl or glass measuring cup with a spoutA small funnel

It’s incredibly easy to make your own tinctures: you literally just need to soak plant matter in a menstruum (solvent) for a few weeks so all of its “good stuff” can be absorbed into the liquid. Vodka is usually the best choice. This high-proof alcohol acts as a preservative, and if you store your tinctures in a cool, dark place, they can have a shelf life of 7-10 years.

If you’re using fresh herbs, chop them up a bit or bruise them with a mortar and pestle. You’ll be putting enough of the fresh herb to fill your jar about 3/4 full, but don’t pack it in too tightly: it should fill the jar well, but be loose enough to move around.

For dried herbs, you’ll fill your pint jar halfway. Generally, the ratio of fresh herbs to alcohol is 1:2 (so 1 part plant to 2 parts alcohol), and the ratio of dried herbs to alcohol is 1:4 or 1: 5.

Label your jars and date them, and then let them steep in a cool, dark, dry place.

After it has steeped for several weeks, line a fine-mesh strainer with a layer or two of muslin or cheesecloth, and then hold that over your bowl or measuring cup. Pour the tincture over the cloth so that it strains well, pressing gently on the herbs to squeeze out the liquid. Now, you’ll use the funnel to decant the tincture into your little glass bottles (preferably the kind with droppers), filling them close to the top. Label each bottle with the herb used, as well as the date decanted, and then store them away from direct sunlight.

14 GENERAL INTEREST 04 -17 May 2016 IN P R I N T , O N A I R O N L IN E

ONE of these 1960’s three-wheeled micro machines fetched an astounding $176,000 when it sold at

auction in Florida at the weekend – more than 60,000 times its original value.

With just 26 other original P50s – the smallest production car of all time - remaining in existence, it means 25 others are currently in ownership of pocket-sized cars with a wallet-busting value.

One of just 47 original cars to make it off the production line at Peel’s Isle of Man factory, this ultra-rare 1964 version sold at an RM Sotheby’s Florida event on Saturday in what was deemed a ‘hotly contested’ bidfest.

Raising the equivalent of around £122,000, it cost the winning bidder almost the same as a brand-spanking new Porsche 911 Turbo.

But with just 26 known to be in existence today, the new owner now has their hands on a vehicle that’s infinitely more exclusive than the German sportscar.

And it’s not just the availability of the Peel P50 that’s titchy: at just 134cm long and 99cm wide it’s the most minuscule of all mass-production motors on record.

Even the wheel count is on the small side with three in total measuring 4.1 inches wrapped in donut-size tyres.

All the power generated by the two-stroke 49cc moped engine is sent to the single rear wheel, though thankfully the horsepower output is a more pony like at

a meagre 4.5hp that’s capable of a fairly pedestrian 38mph.

With a moulded fiberglass cabin enclosing a single beach-chair-like seat for one with no additional passenger or luggage space, it’s not like the moped engine has much weight shift.

In fact, the heaviest thing about the P50 will be the driver – at just 59kg it tips the scales at the same weight as an average washing machine.

That’s probably a good thing, because the three-speed manual transmission

has no reverse gear, meaning you have to use a grab handle at the back to lift the car up and spin it round in tight spaces - the owner will need to park it somewhere secure to prevent thieves picking it up and running away with it.

But while it might not be able to go

backwards its value has certainly gone skywards. Priced at £199 in 1964, the P50 has soared 61,207 times in value in half a century.

Speaking after the sale, RM Sotheby’s Amy Christie said the car caused quite a scene when it appeared in front of the onlooking audience.

‘It was the final lot of the day and drove onto the stage to great applause from the audience,’ she said.

‘It eventually sold for a remarkable $176,000 against a pre-sale estimate of between $75,000 and $100,000.

‘This represents a world record price for a Peel P50 sold at auction.’

MARLON BRANDO rode one, as did James Dean. Steve McQueen famously jumped across the wire on a Triumph in the prisoner-of-war epic “The Great Escape”. Together, they helped to make the British-built motorbike the coolest on the road in the 1960s, by which time it was a bestseller in its range (over 500cc) in America as well as in Britain. But success bred complacency, and by the mid-1970s the company, together with most of the rest of Britain’s motorcycle industry, was on its knees, unable to compete with more reliable, technically more advanced and often cheaper Japanese imports. After several disastrous mergers and bail-outs, Triumph was moribund, no longer cool but more of a byword for oil leaks and trade-union militancy.

This, unfortunately, is the story of much of British manufacturing. Entire sectors failed to keep up with the competition, and collapsed in the 1970s and 1980s. The steel industry has staggered on, a shadow of its former self, but it seems set on a relentlessly downward trajectory: this week saw over a thousand new job losses. Despite lots

of investment, steel has never managed adequately to reinvent itself.

Triumph, however, has. Indeed, it announced recently that it sold a record 55,000 bikes in 2015. It is thus a rare example of a successful industrial salvage operation.

Triumph was saved from the scrap-heap in 1983 by a property developer, John Bloor. He bought the rights to the marque for £150,000. Instead of trying to plough on with the old ways, he took several years out to study the Japanese production lines that had humbled the British.

“We learned a lot,” says Nick Bloor, the developer’s son, who is now boss of Triumph. When the first new model was launched in 1990, it combined the styling that made Triumph’s name with better engineering and reliability, partly the result of using Japanese machinery.

A new factory was built at Hinckley, in Leicestershire, and a couple more in Thailand, where most components are made as well as some complete models. The company has stuck to its core market of making bigger and touring bikes, and has accordingly carved out a global niche. America is, once again, its biggest customer, helped by the enthusiasm

of a new generation of Hollywood stars such as Tom Cruise. About 90% of the 114,000 bikes sold in Britain each year are still imported, but Triumph has built up a 16% share of the more valuable big-bike market.

Steve Kenward, head of the Motorcycle Industry

Association, argues that Triumph has used its name cleverly. Classic photos of Brando and McQueen adorn the walls of its Hinckley factory. For a younger generation, the mud-spattered bike that David Beckham used to slither through the Brazilian jungle in 2014 stands in reception. Similarly, “styling cues” on the bikes, such as the distinctive shape of their exhaust pipes, are a reminder of Triumph’s heritage. Yet the company has also responded to new trends and markets, says Mr Kenward, epitomised by the new “adventure-tourism” of Mr Beckham.

Others are trying a similar trick. Ariel, founded by the man who invented the modern spoked wheel in 1874, was another best-selling motorcycle firm in the 1950s before virtually disappearing. Simon Saunders bought the name in 1999, and today produces about 70 bikes a year, mainly to order, allying the lustre of the brand to high-performance engines. His market is “niche of niche”, he jokes. But, like Triumph, at least he’s still in business.

2016 HUSQVARNA CLASSIC MID-ILLOVO MTB CHALLENGE REPORTS INCREASED ENTRIES

THE 2016 Husqvarna Classic Mid-Illovo MTB Challenge & Trail Run was a resounding success

with an increase in entries over 2015, the introduction of the exciting 60km Husqvarna Classic MTB X-treme and plenty of healthy family fun on a sunny KZN winter’s day.

Race organisers, sponsors Husqvarna, Gwahumbe Game & Spa and iNsingizi Game and Spa, again delivered an event that drew plenty of praise for its fast track, challenging terrain, spectacular vistas, well-manned water tables and excellent markings and marshalling.

Last Sunday’s events included the 60km Husqvarna Classic MTB X-treme, the 40km Husqvarna Classic, the 18km Gwahumbe Game & Spa Fun Ride, 5km and 10km Kids Rides and the iNsingizi 18km Trail Run and 9km trail runs.

Race organiser, Shanon MacKenzie, noted that it was not only the die-hard mountain bikers who enjoyed the event. “The beauty of the Husqvarna Classic Mid-Illovo

MTB Challenge & Trail Run is that it is not exclusively for professional sportsmen and women. It has something for everyone, especially for those who love the outdoors and the beautiful scenery of KwaZulu-Natal. This year, we had even more families participating and lots of people stopped to take selfies en route.”

This 2016 Husqvarna Classic Mid-Illovo MTB Challenge & Trail Run took place two weeks before Sani2C, giving mountain bikers a perfect pre-Sani training opportunity.

The Husqvarna Classic Mid-Illovo MTB Challenge has more than earned its place as part of the prestigious Quattro ROAG Series which was created to develop the sport in KwaZulu-Natal. ROAG received a thumbs up from participants for ensuring that registration was a smooth and easy process for riders.

Caitlin Canton, ROAG events manager, said that adding the 60km attracted serious riders eager to get points for the prestigious ROAG Series.

“On a busy sporting weekend with the Tour D’Urban on the same day, the entries were excellent. This popular race is well organised and the atmosphere made for a great race,” she said.

First man home in the inaugural 60km Husqvarna Classic MTB X-treme which drew 200 entries, was Derrin Smith in a time of 2:28:44. He was followed by Matthew Wilkinson (02:28:45) and Leeroy Emslie (02:33:10).

First place amongst the ladies went to Jeannie Dreyer in 02:50:09, followed by Chriestie-Liegh Hearder in 03:06:13 and Natalie Bergstrom in 03:09:41.

The Husqvarna Classic Mid-Illovo MTB Challenge & Trail Run is a community event and all proceeds are used for the upliftment of the Mid-Illovo community.
