Second Great Awakening In 1790 only 5% of Americans were officially
affiliated with a Church. Begins in Kentucky and Tennessee in the 1790s Characterized by:
Itinerant preachers: rode a circuit of rural areas with no churches
Revivals Focus on personal salvation
Everyone in equal before God Perfectionism and millennialism
Focused on the perfection of society
Slavery Most slaves worked as field hands
Others worked as artisans or domestic servants
Overseer kept the slaves in line Usually hired help
The South was one of the richest areas in the world Most of that wealth from slaves
