Life in La Plata County Though set far from the bright lights of the big city, La Plata County enjoys contemporary amenities and a rich cultural history, as well as the cohesiveness and caring spirit traditional in rural communities. The county is considered “tri-ethnic,” embracing Native American, Latino and Anglo cultures. With Southern Ute Tribal lands stretching across a portion of the county, residents and visitors have the opportunity to participate in annual celebrations and festivals. With names such as Rio de las Animas, Escalante Crossing and Santa Rita Park, the region’s Hispanic heritage is well-documented, and the culture is celebrated with the arts and during annual festivals such as Fiesta Days and Cinco de Mayo. Fort Lewis College lends a spirit of progressiveness and youth to the fabric of the region, as student involvement and enthusiasm is woven throughout the community. On campus, the growing arts facilities host the acoustically perfect Community Concert Hall, the world renowned Center for Southwest Studies and the Arts Center, which showcases local as well as national artists. From locally roasted coffee beans and award-winning hand-crafted beer, to gourmet foods and farm-fresh produce, cheeses and meats, great food is a given in La Plata County. Unique dining establishments rival those of the big city. In season, the bustling farmers market is not only a source for fresh, natural and organic foods, but a community reunion as well. Durango’s historic downtown offers a “locals” experience to visitors, with independent retailers creating unique shopping and social opportunities. Durango embraces a growing arts community, showcasing the fine artists and photographers who have captured the essence of the region in their mediums. Music festivals of all types offer something for nearly everyone; from Music in the Mountains to the grassroots Bluegrass Meltdown, the hills are indeed alive with the sounds of music. Athletic endeavors are a natural part of the lifestyle, including downhill skiing and boarding activities at Purgatory, and the event that launched Durango’s reputation as a cycling mecca: The Iron Horse Bicycle Classic. The Snowdown winter festivities, Durango Independent Film Festival, and even Bayfield’s Sheep Festival are just a sampling of the activities that add sparks to life in La Plata County.

The Climate La Plata County’s climate is considered ideal thanks to moderate temperatures and beautiful seasons. In summer, temperatures seldom climb above the high eighties and spring is characterized by afternoon showers, which bathe the land and stimulate verdant growth. Fall brings the promise of “Indian Summer” and clear, dry, cool days - perfect for enjoying the outdoors. Winters are generally mild, sunny and dry with seldom a day of temperatures even close to zero.

The Geography Located at 6,512 feet, Durango, Colorado, captures the best of the Rockies. The rugged and picturesque San Juan and La Plata Mountains form a breathtaking contrast to the crystal clear blue sky. The air is clean and fresh, as are the rivers - Animas, Florida, La Plata, and Los Piños - that have cut through the canyons and carved valleys in the vast mesas. Though the region enjoys plentiful snowfall, which blankets the ski slopes of Purgatory, the sun truly does shine nearly 300 days a year.

N estled in Southwestern Colorado, Durango is ideal for getting away from the major cities, while still able to access the necessities. Durango is situated near the “Four Corners,” the only spot in the United States where four states meet. The city of Durango is easily accessible by several highways and is not restricted by mountain passes to the west, south, and east. Durango is surrounded by the San Juan National Forest, which creates a backyard of more than 2 million acres of pine forests, aspen groves, lakes, streams, and spectacular views. The city itself takes up 4.37 square miles, while La Plata County is spread across 1700 square miles.

Population La Plata County has experienced steady population growth. In recent decades, much of the growth has occurred in the unincorporated areas of the county, though effort is now being made to retain “open space.” Actual population growth has varied since the turn of the last century, tied primarily to the region’s economies of mining and oil & gas production. Since the early 1960’s, however, the growth of tourism and other non-seasonal industries has prompted stabilized growth. Between 2000 and 2010, La Plata County averaged 1.24% annual growth. Durango proper grew an average of 1.44%, with Bayfield experiencing a 6.88% growth. Ignacio’s population has declined slightly, but with the economic strength of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe and increased enterprises, a return to growth is likely.

The 1978 charter was revised to encourage involvement from the citizenry, the authors adhering to the philosophy that when citizens actively participate in government, protection of the public interest is best insured.

The Durango/La Plata County airport, located 15 miles southeast of the City of Durango and accessed via State Hwy 172, is a publicly-owned commercial service and general aviation facility, operated jointly by the City of Durango and La Plata County. The 9,200 foot primary runway is lit and equipped with navigational aids, and can handle the majority of commercial-sized aircraft. Currently, United Express offers non-stop service to Denver. American Airlines offers a non-stop flight to Dallas/Fort Worth and Phoenix. Business and recreational travelers also enjoy private aircraft and charter service at Durango/La Plata with on-site, fixed-based operators. For additional information, visit www.flydurango.com.

Durango is served by motor carriers and delivery services from all geographic areas in the United States. Major markets in the Southwest and West coast areas enjoy closer, more convenient transport from Durango than from Denver and more amenable winter weather. Atlas Van Lines, RAC Transport, Airborne Express, UPS, FedEx and Kangaroo Express all have local offices.

The city of Durango offers a variety of options for public transportation through Durango Transit – or the “T” – which operates a variety of small buses and trolleys within the Durango municipal limits, including service to Downtown, Fort Lewis College, Mercy Regional Medical Center, west, and south Durango, and all buses are equipped with bike racks. The city also operates an on-demand transportation service for the elderly and disabled and offers a trolley service available along Main Avenue. Road Runner Transit is a service of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe, operated by the Southern Ute Community Action Program, and based in Ignacio. Currently, there are 3 daily round-trips from Ignacio and Bayfield to Durango and Ignacio to Aztec. For additional information call (970) 563-4545 or visit www.sucap.org.
