Life Cycle of a ButterflyPixie 2


Introduction

Open Pixie.

Click the Start menu button.

Choose All Programs, choose the Tech4Learning folder, choose the Pixie 2 folder, andselect Pixie 2.

Pixie will open.

You will see a blank picture.

Open an Activity

You can use Activities to learn about common classroom topics.

Click the Open button on the toolbar.

You will see the Open Picture dialog.



Click the Activities button in the list on the left.

You will see the Activities folders.



Double-click the Templates folder to open it. You must be connected to the Internet touse this template.

You will see the templates.



Click the 4 Cycle activity.

Click the Open button.

You will see the 4-stage cycle template.



Add Stickers to a Picture

You can add clip art stickers to your picture.

Click the Stickers tab in the panel on the right.

You will see the Stickers library.



Use the scrollbar to find the Life Cycles folder.

Click the folder icon in the lower right corner of the Life Cycles folder to open it.

You will see the Folders in the Life Cycles category.

Click the folder icon on the Life Cycles - Insect folder to open it.

You will see stickers of insects at different life cycle stages.

Click the green arrow on the Butterfly Adult sticker to add it to the picture.

You will see the sticker in the middle of your picture.



Move a Sticker

You can move a sticker.

Move the cursor over the middle of the adult butterfly sticker.

The cursor will change to four arrows.



Click and drag the sticker to box at the top.

Practice with Stickers



You can add more stickers to a picture.

The next stage in the life cycle of a butterfly is eggs.

Click the green arrow on the Butterfly Eggs sticker to add it to the picture.

Move the mouse over the middle of the sticker.


Click the drag the sticker to box on the right.

The next stage in the life cycle of a butterfly is larva, or caterpillar.

Click the green arrow on the Butterfly Larva sticker to add it to the picture.





Click the drag the sticker to box on the bottom.

The next stage in the life cycle of a butterfly is pupa, or cocoon.

Click the green arrow on the Butterfly Pupa 1 sticker to add it to the picture.





Click the drag the sticker to box on the left.

Resize a Sticker

You can resize a sticker.

Move the cursor over one of the green handles on the corner of the Butterfly Pupa 1sticker.

You will see the cursor change to two arrows.

Click and drag to resize the sticker.

Drag away toward the middle of the sticker to make it smaller.

Click the picture away from the sticker to deselect it.



Add a Text Object

You can add text to a picture.

Click the Text tool on the tool palette.

You will see a text object in the middle of the picture.



Double-click in the middle of the text object.

You will see a blinking cursor.

Type your name.

You will see your name in the text object.

Click the picture away from your text object.



Move and Resize a Text Object

You can resize and move a text box just like a sticker.

Move the cursor over the middle of your name.

You will see a dotted box around the text object.

Click the mouse button one time.

You will see green handles around the text object.



Move the cursor over the bottom right handle.

It will change to two arrows.

Click and drag so that you can see your entire name on one line.

Let go of the mouse button.

Move the cursor over the middle of the text box.




Click and drag the box next to the word Name at the top.

Click the picture away from the text box.



Save

You can save this Pixie file.

Click the Save button on the toolbar.

You will see the Save Picture As dialog.



Click the expand arrow next to the Save As field.

You will see more navigation options.



Click the Desktop button on the left to move to the Desktop.

You will see the files on your Desktop.

Click the New Folder button at the bottom of the dialog.

You will see a New Folder dialog.

Type: Butterflies

You will see this name in the field.



Click the OK button.

The Save Picture As dialog will show this folder as the saving location.



Click the Save As field.

Use the Delete and Backspace keys on the keyboard to delete the current name of thefile.

Type: Life Cycle

Click the Save button.

Open a Photo

You can open and work with digital photographs.

Click the Open button on the toolbar.

You will see the Open Picture dialog.

Click the Photos button in the list on the left.



You will see the folders in the Photos category.

Click the folder icon on the Insects folder to open it.

You will see the photos in the Insect folder.



Click the Monarch Butterflies photograph to select it.

Click the Open Image button at the bottom of the dialog.

You will see the monarch butterflies picture open in Pixie.

Add an Oil Paint Effect

You can add effects to your picture. Effects change how a picture looks.

Click the Choose button in the Effects area of the Options panel.

You will see a field of effects.

Click and drag the scrollbar to find the Oil Paint effect.



Click the Oil Paint effect to select it.

Click the Edit button below the Effects field.

You will see the Oil Paint dialog.



Click and drag the Amount slider so that it is in the middle of the bar.


You will see an Effect dialog as the effect is applied.

You will see the picture of the monarch butterflies change to look like an oil painting.



Add a Cool Edge

You can add a fancy edge to your picture.

Click and drag the scrollbar for the Effects field back to the top of the effects.

Click the Cool Edge effect.



Click the Edit button below the Effects field.

You will see the Cool Edge dialog.

Use the scrollbar to see the edge options.

Click the edge you want to add to the picture.

Click the edge you want to add to this picture in the field on the right.




You will see the edge on the picture.



Save



You are already at the Butterflies folder.

You will see the name Monarch Butterflies in the Save As field.



This will be the name for the file.


Make a New Picture

Click the New button on the toolbar.



You will see a new blank picture.

You can use the paint tools to paint a picture.

You will paint a picture of a butterfly.

Use the Shape Tool

You can use the Shape tool to paint a line on your picture.

Click the Shape tool on the tool palette.

You will see the shape options on the Options panel.

Click the line in the Shapes field.



Click and drag the Width slider so that it is in the middle of the bar.

Click black on the color palette.

Move the cursor near the middle of the picture.



Click and drag straight down to draw a vertical line.




This will be the body of the butterfly.

Use the Paint Brush Tool

You can use the Paint Brush tool to paint freehand. You can turn on mirroring to drawsymmetrically.

Click the Paint Brush tool on the tool palette.



You will see the brush options in the editing panel.

Click the flat, or 2-dimensional, round Brush option.

Click and drag the Size slider so that it is between the flat and 3-dimensional options.

Click the Mirror check box.

Use the pull-down menu to choose 2.



Make sure the Direction button for vertical is selected.

Move the cursor over the butterfly body near the top.



Click and drag to draw the outline of wing on the right.

You will see the left wing paint at the same time.


Click the Undo button on the toolbar if you want to try again.

Use the Paint Bucket Tool



You can use the Paint Bucket tool to fill solid areas on a picture.

Click the Paint Bucket tool on the tool palette.

Move the cursor over the color palette. It will change to an eyedropper.

Find a blue color to use for the sky.

Click the pull-down menu on the Options panel to choose Solid if you do not see it.

Click the solid color option on the editing panel.



Move the cursor to the space outside of the butterfly on your picture.



Click the mouse button.

The area will fill with blue.

Fill an Area with a Pattern

You can fill an area with a pattern.

Use the pull-down menu on the Options panel to choose Patterns.



Click the red and orange pattern.

Move the cursor to the middle of one of the wings.



Click the mouse button.

The wing will fill with this pattern.



Click the cursor in each of the wing areas to fill them all with color.



Add and Format Text

You can add and format text on a picture.

Click the Text tool on the tool palette.

You will see a text box in the middle of the picture.



Type: My Butterfly

You will see this text in the box.

Click the picture away from the text box.

Click back on the text box.



Click and drag the text box to the top left corner of the picture.

Move the cursor over the handle in the lower right corner.

Click and drag so that the text box stretches across the picture.

You will see text formatting options on the Options panel.

Click the Font pull-down menu and choose a new font.



You will see the font change.

Click and drag the Size slider to make the text larger.

You will see the size change.

Click the center button in the Alignment area.

Click the picture away from the text.



Save



Type: My Butterfly



You will see this name in the Save As field.


Run a Slide Show

You can run a slide show of the images you have created.

Click the Share button on the toolbar.



You will see a storyboard of your pictures.

Click the Show button in the Options panel.



You will see the show options in the Options panel.

Click the Start button.



You will see a slide show of your images.

When the slide show is done, you will return to Pixie.

Go to the File menu and choose Exit.

Pixie will close.
