Notes from the EditorSummer is now in full swing and the kids will be back in school before
we know it. In the midst of our busy summer schedule with family,
picnics and vacations, lets continue to support those who are still
putting their lives together after the devastating tornados back in April.
It will certainly take months and years in some cases to return to any
sense of normalcy but it will happen one day at a time as a community.
As the summer days continue to get hot, so do the real estate deals that
are available. Now is a great time to buy a home at a great price and get
settled in before the Fall. There have been many price reductions over
the past few weeks, so you may find that the dream home you thought
was out of reach may indeed be right in your price range. Visit our web
site at www.lifeandhomes.com to get all the details on any homes for sale you see in our publication and
many more on-line.
Thank you for support of our advertisers and enjoy a safe and memorable summer.

home Sweet homeThe longer someone has owned a home, the more likely that person is to trumpet the financial wisdom of homeownership, according to a recent Pew Research poll. Among homeowners who have been in their current home since 1979 or earlier, 56% strongly agree that homeownership is the best long-term investment a person can make. This share falls to 43% among those who bought their current home between 1980 and 1999; to 36% among those who bought their home between 2000 and 2006; and to 31% among those who have owned since 2007 or later.
The highest level of buyer’s remorse was among homeowners who purchased their current home during the great run-up in prices, from 2000 to 2006. Some 30% of these homeowners say that, if they had it to do all over again, they would not buy their current home, compared with 19% of those who purchased their current home before 2000; and 24% of those who purchased their current home in 2007 or later. create A Stylish Outdoor Space on A BudgetIf your patio furniture, barbecue grill or favorite outdoor planter was left outside this winter, it probably took a beating. But think twice before you relegate your favorite lounge chair or lawn ornaments to the landfill. It’s easy to transform them and make them look better than new. All you need is a little imagination and a few cans of spray paint.
create “designer” furniture. designer patio sets, lawn chairs and other outdoor furniture can cost hundreds, even thousands of dollars. But it’s easy and inexpensive to give the furniture you already own a face lift that mimics the look of trendy designer furniture with a few coats of spray paint.
create a durable designer look that sparkles in the sun with rust-oleum Stops rust Textured metallic in Galaxy, a textured black with flecks of silver. The texture adds depth, elegance and unmatched protection to any project. or create a rich oil rubbed Bronze finish, while protecting your furniture from the elements, with rust-oleum universal spray paint. choose an unexpected color, like Painter’s Touch 2X Satin eden. you can also transform garage sale bargains, flea market finds or used furniture you find on sites like craigsList or Freecycle with spray paint to get a designer look without the designer price tag.
revive an old barbecue grill. If your grill was buried under three feet of snow, it could probably use a little TLc. Why not revive it with a spray paint specifically formulated for high heat applications? rust-oleum high heat ultra resists heat up to 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit so it’s great for grills, fire pits and wood-burning stoves. Plus, it’s available in traditional black, as well as stylish colors and finishes such as brown and aged copper, so your barbecue grill will look better than new.
Accessories can get a second life, too. No need to toss planters, lawn ornaments or other outdoor accessories because their finish has been weather damaged. Spray paint can give them a second life. Try spray painting planters with rust-oleum Stops rust for a rooftop garden or patio in a variety of vegetable colors-Sunrise red for tomatoes, hunter Green for lettuce or green peppers, different shades of green for herbs. The possibilities to add a splash of color-or a little sophistication - to a patio, rooftop or backyard are endless.

newsShortscleaning Grease Stains on concreteGrease stains on driveways and garage floors detract from a home's appeal.
Although you can purchase commercial cleaners to tackle the job, common household items will do the job just as well. Spread cat litter on the grease and walk on it to grind it into the stain. Sweep up the litter and pour a fresh cola beverage until it wets the stained area thoroughly. Immediately work the cola into the stain using a stiff broom. do not let the cola dry. When the cola stops fizzing, rinse the area with water. mix 1 cup of liquid chlorine bleach and 1 cup of powdered laundry detergent in one gallon of very hot water. carefully pour over any remaining gray stain to lighten it up.

Get Rid Of Household HazardsMake safety a priority in your home when you clean. Here are tips to help:
Living Room/Dining Room• Secure all bookcases, shelving and heavy furniture. Place heavier items on lower shelves and in bottom drawers.
• many houseplants are poisonous and pots are heavy, so keep them out of reach of little hands.
• use plug protectors for all unused wall outlets.
Bathroom• To prevent bathwater scalds, set the thermostat of your hot water heater no higher than 120 degrees F. It takes just three seconds for a child to sustain a third degree burn at 140 degrees F.
• Always request child-resistant packaging for medicine, but go a step further by making sure medicine cabinets are locked at all times. even items that may seem harmless can be dangerous to a child.
Kitchen• Keep sharp knives and other utensils well out of reach and make sure that knife blades are pointing down when placed in a dishwasher’s cutlery basket.
• When cooking, always use the back burners, turn pot handles toward the back of the stove and keep hot foods and liquids away from young children.
• And make sure microwaves are out of reach of children as well; the vast majority of microwave burns among children are serious scald burns.
Bedroom• make sure cribs are properly assembled and meet current safety standards, and that crib mattresses fit snugly.
• According to the u.S. consumer Product Safety commission, infants and young children can die from accidentally strangling in window cords. The Window covering Safety council reminds parents and caregivers of potential window-cord dangers and urges them to make the right choice and use only cordless window products in homes with young children. owners and renters should replace all corded window coverings made before 2001 with today’s safer products. Visit www.windowcoverings.org for a free retrofit kit or call (800) 506-4636. (NAPSI)

Using High-Tech Communication(NAPSI)—There’s good news for older adults who want to learn more about e-mailing, using social media and text messaging. There’s a resource that can help introduce them to these technologies.
A new brochure—“Staying connected: Technology options for older Adults”—is available from the eldercare Locator. It is designed to help older adults learn about new methods for staying connected with family and friends. The brochure includes tips on using these communication tools, getting started as well as privacy and safety information.
The Internet, cell phones and other new technologies enable people of all ages to communicate more quickly than ever before. While younger people are often seen as the “experts” with these new tools, many older adults utilize e-mail, social media and cell phones to communicate as well.
To receive a free copy of the brochure, call the eldercare Locator at (800) 677-1116. A copy of the brochure can also be downloaded from the resources section of www.eldercare.gov.

Updating a Deck?Trends and Tips for Great resultsWhen it comes to home improvements that add value and enjoyment to your home, it's hard to top the power of a great deck. In fact, a deck can return nearly 73 percent of your initial investment when you sell your home, according to Remodeling Magazine's 2010 Cost vs. Value Report.
If this is your year to add a deck - or spruce up an existing one - here are some helpful tips from the home improvement experts at Lowe's:
Repairing and upgrading an existing deck
If your home already has a deck, start the summer season by making sure it's in good condition. check for damaged boards and replace them with the appropriate decking material. Tighten fasteners or replace them if they won't tighten. Tap down and set protruding nails or replace them with deck screws. check for splinters on surfaces, especially along handrails and steps, and smooth with sandpaper.
A fresh coat of deck stain will brighten the deck's appearance and keep it looking new longer by repelling water, resisting mildew and preventing fading in high-traffic areas. you can cut the project time in half by using a product like express deck wood stain by cabot, which allows you to clean and stain in a single day without waiting for the deck to dry. The product, available exclusively at Lowe's, comes in a semi-transparent stain and can be tinted to any color or selected from the pre-mixed, grab-and-go oak brown.
once your cleaning and staining tasks are done, you can add updates to your existing deck by swapping out railings or adding decorative metal post caps or post cap lights. or you can give your deck a little extra privacy
with lattice. Adding lattice is an easy and versatile way to provide beauty, privacy and dimension without blocking cooling breezes or boxing in space.
Building a new deck
Building a deck costs about $15 per square foot, on average - around $4,000 for a 16- by-20-foot deck. Treated lumber is still the material of choice for most homeowners. Standard treated decking is economical and offers a limited warranty against rot and decay. you can also upgrade to treated wood designed to stand up to severe weather like Topchoice Severe Weather Treated decking.
composite or PVc decking are other options. durable and ecofriendly, these alternative materials mimic the look of wood and are low maintenance. Although composite brands like choicedek and Trex cost more, the only maintenance required is regular cleaning. composite won't split, splinter, crack or mold.
deck trends and tips
Whether you're building a new deck or upgrading an existing one, here are some of the hot trends to consider incorporating into your design:
* Bigger is better when it comes to decks. decks create more living space and are an extension of the home, so larger decks with
multiple levels give you more space for living and entertaining. Built-ins for seating and storage are also popular additions to larger decks.
* Natural elements: Water features, such as a fountain, add to the relaxation of a deck and help mask the sounds of street traffic.
* railings: decks have railings for safety's sake, but that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice beauty for function. railings are becoming a more important visual statement, with decorative balusters, posts and spindles, post caps and lighting.
* outdoor room decor: extend the look and feel of your home all the way outside - don't keep it confined to the walls of your home. Add accessories like outdoor rugs, lighting, pillows, container plants and new patio furni-ture to your outdoor space.
No matter what your deck project, planning and budgeting before you start can help your efforts run smoothly. Lowes.com offers a free deck designer tool and real-time lumber pricing.
Whether your choose traditional treated lumber or composite materials, create a trendy multi-level outdoor paradise or keep it simple, a deck can expand your outdoor living space, enhance your enjoyment of your home and create great value when the time comes to sell your home. (ArA)

This book has two major themes that intertwine throughout its pages. First, it deals with the often hidden area of sexual brokenness that men grapple with, and the redemption found through the grace of God. This captivating book also explores three portraits of identity that Christians experience including: The false masks we wear that hinder us from engaging in true fellowship with one another. Next it exposes and dismantles the work of Satan who seeks to steal our identity and birthright as children of God. Finally, it chronicles the amazing inheritance we all have as children of God, and how to live out this inheritance through a life hallmarked by grace and balanced servanthood. This book will genuinely change your life and is a must read for those who want a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ!
Lee Grady, Editor In Chief of Charisma Magazine, says, “I believe Jon Potter’s book can start a revolution—a revolution of honesty. It is time for all of us to come out of hiding. And I believe this signifi cant book will help you make the journey toward true healing.”
Jon is a sought after evangelist, conference speaker, and minister. He graduated from Lee university in 1989 where he earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology. After Lee, Jon attended the University of Georgia where he completed a master’s degree in education with an emphasis in counseling in 1991. He spent eleven years in corporate America. This tenure ended when he accepted the call to full-time ministry in 2001. Jon and his wife, Lisa, have been married for 20 years, have three children, and reside in Birmingham, Alabama. 8 We bring people and homes together.
Since caulk is placed in moisture-rich areas, it can provide an ideal environment for mold and mildew to accumulate and grow. mold can cause health issues, including allergic reactions, according to the environmental Protection Agency.
Protecting the home from the initial growth or reoccurrence of mold and mildew on caulk depends on whether the right caulk is used. That's because not all mold protection in caulk is equal. making sure you use a caulk that addresses the whole problem - fungus and bacteria - can help provide you with an effective, lasting defense.
Ge silicone caulks, such as Ge Silicone II Kitchen & Bath and K/B Supreme, because of the level and type of biocide, pack the dual punch of stopping fungus and bacteria growth. The five- to 10-year mold-free product protection that Ge silicone caulk offers is among the longest protection on the market today. And, each is permanently waterproof.
"homeowners need to look for a caulk that has the right type of biocide and one that is permanently impervious to water, helping to ensure that moisture - essential for mold to grow - is unable to leak or collect behind tiles, walls, tubs, showers or sinks," says curtis Niles, National Association of home Inspectors.
If you do decide that it's time to replace your caulk, it's important to do the job right to ensure lasting mold protection.
here are a few caulking tips:
* Find the right caulk. Look for 100 percent silicone: it's permanently waterproof and will never shrink, crack or deteriorate over time. Avoid using acrylic caulk, which can shrink or crack over time. Water can seep through gaps left by cracked caulk. Those leaks can lead to water damage and mold growth. For added protection, choose a caulk with five or 10 year mold-free product protection. If you plan on painting over your caulk, choose a permanently waterproof and paintable caulk like Groov by Ge.
* clean the surface. remove old caulk, dirt, and loose particles with a caulk-removing tool and wipe clean with a cloth. Never caulk over old caulk. use a razor blade first to remove the old caulk. By removing the old caulk you can also strip off any mold or mildew that may have formed.
* Prepare the tube and seal. cut the nozzle to a size that matches the area that needs to be caulked; close to the tip for a smaller area and further down for a larger area. Pierce the inner seal with a stiff wire or other similar object. Insert cartridge into caulking gun. Squeeze with even,
consistent pressure to control the rate at which the caulk leaves the tube as you pull the gun toward you.
* Smooth the bead. use your finger or a wet caulk-smoothing tool within two to five minutes of application.
* Store the tube and clean. Squeeze the caulk until it's barely coming out of the tube. replace the cap, or use a nail in the tube opening. Wipe hands with a dry cloth before washing with soap and water. To clean the area around the caulk, use mineral spirits for silicone caulk or Groov.
For more information on caulking products and project advice, visit www.gesealants.com. (ArA)
Fight Allergens Lurking in Kitchens and Baths
While it's easy to blame seasonal pollen, it may be what's lurking on the caulk in your bathrooms or kitchens that is causing your family to sniffle and sneeze.
